Production Activity And Performers At The Metropolitan Theatre, Grand Forks, North Dakota 1898 - 1911, Dawn D. Drake

Theses and Dissertations

This study documents and analyzes the production activity and the quality of the celebrity performers appearing at the Metropolitan Theatre in Grand Forks, North Dakota, during the years of 1898 to 1911. The production activity at the theatre is categorized into seven groups of production: legitimate drama, Shakespeare/'classics, melodramas, minstrels, opera/musicals, vaudeville/burlesque and special productions. The quality of performers is judged by their relative status in American theatre history. Both of these elements were, during this period, heavily influenced by the Theatrical Syndicate.

Research for this study includes searching newspaper advertisements and publicity for the productions found in The Grand …

Validation Of The Victim Empathy Scale: A Measure Of Emotional Empathy For Victims Of Violent Crime, Martine M. Mizwa Dec 1993

Validation Of The Victim Empathy Scale: A Measure Of Emotional Empathy For Victims Of Violent Crime, Martine M. Mizwa

Theses and Dissertations

Much effort on the part of researchers from all social science disciplines has gone into studying the effect of crime on its victims, their treatment by the criminal justice system, and others who routinely come into contact with them. This research has shown a need for improved treatment of crime victims by service providers and other helpers. Because empathy plays such an important role in mediating an individual's response to another's victimization, reliable methods to evaluate and foster empathy are needed. Increased empathy for victims on the part of police officers, prosecutors, health care providers, friends and family, could help …

A Controlled Comparison Of Aerobic Exercise And Behavioral Treatment For Recurrent Tension Headache, Marty Paul Witucki Dec 1993

A Controlled Comparison Of Aerobic Exercise And Behavioral Treatment For Recurrent Tension Headache, Marty Paul Witucki

Theses and Dissertations

Tension headache is a widespread problem, with an estimated lifetime prevalence rate of 69% for males and 88% for females. Empirical evidence supports the clinical observation that daily stress is a powerful precipitant of tension headaches. Research also supports the contention that tension headache sufferers tend to appraise and cope with daily stressors in ways which exacerbate or prolong this stress. Because aerobic exercise (EX) has been implicated as a useful stress relieving agent, this study examined the use of aerobic exercise as a treatment for tension headache. A comparison treatment consisting of progressive relaxation, stress management, and biofeedback (PR), …

Orbital Applications Of Electrodynamic Propulsion, Troy Irwin Dec 1993

Orbital Applications Of Electrodynamic Propulsion, Troy Irwin

Theses and Dissertations

Electrodynamic propulsion (EDP) uses forces resulting from electric currents in conductors as a spacecraft travels through a magnetic field. A vehicle-independent expression for the specific power required for any maneuver is derived and used to assess EDP feasibility. Analytical expressions for the accelerations and combined current-conductor vector required to change the orbital plane or the argument of perigee are developed based on Lagranges planetary equations. Solutions to the forced Clohessy-Wiltshire equations are developed to study iii-plane rendezvous. Results show EDP can change inclination or right ascension of the ascending mode at approximately 0.4 degrees/day with current spacecraft specific power technology. …

A Physics-Based Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor Model For Integrated Circuit Simulation, James A. Fellows Dec 1993

A Physics-Based Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor Model For Integrated Circuit Simulation, James A. Fellows

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research effort was to derive a physics-based dc model for a Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor HBT. The dc model was then linearized to arrive at a small-signal model that accurately predicts the devices electrical behavior at microwave frequencies. This new model offers features not found in previous analytical or physics-based HBT models such as consideration of a cylindrical emitter-base geometry and is direct implementation into SPICE Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis. The device model parameters were determined from a knowledge of the device material, geometry, and fabrication process. The model was then developed by using semiconductor …

Shielded Coil Electrodynamic Propulsion (Scep). A Feasibility Study, Richard J. R. Ladouceur Dec 1993

Shielded Coil Electrodynamic Propulsion (Scep). A Feasibility Study, Richard J. R. Ladouceur

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated Shielded Coil Electrodynamic Propulsion SCEP. The use of the earths magnetic field as a propulsion source has been previously investigated. It was found that a significant amount of power and long conductors were required. A more compact propulsion concept which requires significantly less power is proposed. This concept relies on the feasibility of significantly reducing the magnetic force induced by the earths magnetic field on selected segments of a coil. An experiment design to support the theoretical findings was conducted. The experiment results support the theoretical model.

The Development And Use Of An Evaluation Mechanism For The Assessment Of Software Configuration Management Tools, Wayne M. Descheneau, Neil W. Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the development of a mechanism for use in the evaluation of Software Configuration Management SCM tools. An examination of applicable DoD standards identified the SCM requirements that could be levied on a development contractor, and a literature search revealed the functionality common to various automated tools. These two sets of information were organized into a matrix, and for each requirement that was met, the intersection on the matrix of the requirement and each functionality used to meet that requirement was checked. In addition to the matrix, the mechanism consisted of general information about a given tool and …

Interrogatives In Yanomám, Richard A. Thiele Dec 1993

Interrogatives In Yanomám, Richard A. Thiele

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a general linguistic description of yes-no and information questions in Yanomám (a member of the Yanomami language family of Brazil and Venezuela) in the descriptive/typological tradition, including morphosyntax and semantics, appropriate responses, certain discourse-pragmatic conditions of their use (such as bias and focus), and intonation patterns.

Some things in the Yanomám language that are typologically unusual are an information question system that utilizes just one interrogative word, interaction of temporal-evidential particles with questions, and the occurrence of hortative constructions in questions.

My sources of information include the limited published works and articles on the language, previously unpublished …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present investigation was to add to our understanding of the relationship between therapist-client value similarity and the quality of the therapeutic alliance. The study examined whether therapist-subject congruence on the achievement dimension of the Mental Health Values Questionnaire was predictive of some of the variables shown to contribute to positive therapeutic alliance, such as (1) subjects’ perceptions of a prospective therapist, and (2) subjects’ willingness to disclose sensitive information to a prospective therapist.

Subjects were assigned to a high-achievement or low- achievement group based on the their scores on the achievement dimension of the Mental Health …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Gender And Specificity Of Information On Diagnosis, Scott W. Sumerall Dec 1993

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Gender And Specificity Of Information On Diagnosis, Scott W. Sumerall

Theses and Dissertations

Results of studies investigating the possible presence of bias in psychotherapy are equivocal. Past studies have not taken into consideration the amount of information provided to clinicians and therefore have varied this dependent variable unsystematically from study to study. The current study explored the effects of the gender of the psychologist, gender of the client, and level of information provided upon which to base decisions on diagnostic and treatment decisions. Three cases varying gender of the client and the amount of information given were mailed to 814 psychologists listed in the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Respondents …

Mere Babes In The Woods: Teaching And Learning In The Native American Classroom, Scott Lyons Dec 1993

Mere Babes In The Woods: Teaching And Learning In The Native American Classroom, Scott Lyons

Theses and Dissertations

There has been a good deal of talk about "'multicultural education" in the past few years; at the center of these discussions are issues of ethics, politics, and values. What does it mean to be "multicultural"? How does one's culture figure into pedagogical situations—as a teacher? as a student? How should these complex social and historical backgrounds be utilized at the university? Finally, what are the cultural costs of a university education for students, especially those students from historically oppressed cultural backgrounds?

This study specifically examines the situation of Native American students in the university writing classroom. Drawing upon many …

Porter James Mccumber : Evolution Of A Senator, Amy Kathleen Rieger Dec 1993

Porter James Mccumber : Evolution Of A Senator, Amy Kathleen Rieger

Theses and Dissertations

Virtually nothing has been written about the early life and career of Porter James McCumber, who served North Dakota in the United States Senate from 1899-1922. Contributing to the lack of written material about the man is the fact that there are very few sources available concerning his social and political life. He left no official papers, and therefore no clear record of his life. The purpose of this thesis, then, is to illuminate the life and times of McCumber, with a special emphasis on his career in North Dakota through his election to the Senate in 1899. I will …

The Great Tone Split And Central Karen, William G. Kauffman Dec 1993

The Great Tone Split And Central Karen, William G. Kauffman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a comparative reconstruction of the tones and initial consonants of Proto-Central Karen based on the languages Eastern Kayah, Western Kayah, Geba, and Padaung. Other Karen languages are referred to but not studied to the same detail.

The study focuses on the great tone split that affected nearly all the languages of Southeast Asia, including Central Karen. I show that an understanding of the great tone split is crucial if one is to discover the phonological characteristics of Proto-Central Karen syllable-initial consonants.

In agreement with Haudricourt's (1946) analysis of Proto-Karen, I conclude that Proto-Central Karen had three proto-tones …

A Non-Homogeneous, Spatio-Temporal, Wavelet Multiresolution Analysis And Its Application To The Analysis Of Motion, Thomas J. Burns Dec 1993

A Non-Homogeneous, Spatio-Temporal, Wavelet Multiresolution Analysis And Its Application To The Analysis Of Motion, Thomas J. Burns

Theses and Dissertations

This research presents a multiresolution wavelet analysis tool for analyzing motion in time sequential imagery. A theoretical framework is developed for constructing an L2R wavelet multiresolution analysis from three non-identical spatial and temporal L2R wavelet multiresolution analyses. This framework provides the flexibility to tailor the spatio-temporal frequency characteristics of the three dimensional wavelet filter to match the frequency behavior of the analyzed signal. An unconventional, discrete multiresolution wavelet decomposition algorithm is developed which yields a rich set of independent spatio-temporally oriented frequency channels for analyzing, the size and speed characteristics of moving objects. Unlike conventional wavelet decomposition methods, this algorithm …

Spectroscopic And Vibrational Energy Transfer Studies In Molecular Bromine, Courtney D. Holmberg Dec 1993

Spectroscopic And Vibrational Energy Transfer Studies In Molecular Bromine, Courtney D. Holmberg

Theses and Dissertations

Vibrational transfer and electronic quenching in the lower vibrational levels (v' < 3) of the B3π(0u+) state of 79Br2 were investigated using spectrally resolved, temporally resolved laser induced fluorescence techniques. Spectrally resolved emissions from collisionally populated Br2(B) vibrational levels were observed for Br2 and rare gas collision partners. Vibrational transfer was efficient in the non-predissociative vibrational levels and was adequately described by the Montroll-Shuler model for harmonic oscillators. A single fundamental rate coefficient for vibrational transfer from v' = 1 to v' = 0, kv(1,0), characterizes vibrational relaxation. For Br2, the …

Binaural Room Simulation, Brian A. Smith Dec 1993

Binaural Room Simulation, Brian A. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Research in binaural and spatial hearing is of particular interest to the Air Force. Applications in cockpit communication, target recognition, and aircraft navigation are being explored. This thesis examines human auditory localization cues and develops a mathematical model for the transfer function of a sound signal traveling from an isotropic point source through a rectangular room to both ears of a listener. Using this model as a guide, non-head coupled binaural sound signals are generated in a binaural room simulation. Reflection and attenuation cues included in the computer generated signals are varied in order to determine which cues enhance the …

Modal Control Of A Satellite In An Unstable Periodic Orbit About The Earth-Sun Interior Lagrange Point, Douglas J. Hopper Dec 1993

Modal Control Of A Satellite In An Unstable Periodic Orbit About The Earth-Sun Interior Lagrange Point, Douglas J. Hopper

Theses and Dissertations

A periodic halo orbit which exists about the interior Lagrange point for the Earth-sun system was decomposed using Floquet theory into modal variables, which are dynamically decoupled subspaces for the six degree of freedom system. Modal control consisted of evaluating the diverging mode and maneuvering to counteract its divergence. In the unperturbed system, this was successful. Control costs were low, and the significance is that the controller did nothing to suppress modes that were oscillatory or converging. The effect of the moons motion allowed the scheme to operate with reasonable control costs, but the effect of eccentricity caused divergence in …

An Approximate Solution For The Spinup Dynamics Of Near Axisymmetric Axial Gyrostats Using The Method Of Multiple Scales, Stewart J. Kowall Dec 1993

An Approximate Solution For The Spinup Dynamics Of Near Axisymmetric Axial Gyrostats Using The Method Of Multiple Scales, Stewart J. Kowall

Theses and Dissertations

Approximate solutions for the spinup of a near axisymmetric gyrostat are derived using the straightforward expansion method and the method of multiple scales. Two method of multiple scale solutions are presented. The first is derived using cartesian coordinates while the second is derived using cylindrical coordinates. The multiple scales solutions are compared to numerically integrated results for oblate and prolate configurations. A comparison for flat spin recovery is also accomplished. Excellent results are obtained for oblate configurations. Trajectory separatrix crossings hindered the results for prolate configurations and flat spin recoveries.

Modeling Of A Large Undamped Space Structure Using Time Domain Techniques, Anthony R. Nash Dec 1993

Modeling Of A Large Undamped Space Structure Using Time Domain Techniques, Anthony R. Nash

Theses and Dissertations

The first phase of this project was the selection of accurate time domain state space modeling techniques by comparing the models generated by various methods, against a known system. The techniques selected were the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm and the Backward Least Squares method. These modeling techniques were applied to the vibration data from the PACOSS dynamic test article. The resulting model transfer function was then compared to the frequency response function of the actual system, and was found to be an accurate match for the system poles, but not for the system zeros. Large Space structures, Dynamic Control, System Mode …

The Modal Solution To The Moon's Orbit Using Canonical Floquet Perturbation Theory, Kurt A. Vogel Dec 1993

The Modal Solution To The Moon's Orbit Using Canonical Floquet Perturbation Theory, Kurt A. Vogel

Theses and Dissertations

Using the restricted three body problem, the equations of motion EOM and Hamiltonian are computed for the moons orbit in physical variables. A periodic orbit is found in the vicinity of the moons orbit, and classical Floquet theory is applied to the periodic orbit to give stability information and the complete solution to the equations of variation. Floquet theory also supplies a transformation from physical variables to modal variables. This transformation to modal variables is made canonical by constraining the initial transformation matrix to be symplectic. Actual lunar data is used to calculate the modes for the real moons orbit. …

Static Fracture Behavior Of A Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperatures, David M. Agins Dec 1993

Static Fracture Behavior Of A Ceramic Matrix Composite At Elevated Temperatures, David M. Agins

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated systematically the damage initiation damage progression, and failure modes of a ceramic matrix composite, Nicalon/CAS, when loaded in tension at elevated temperatures in the presence of air. A cross-ply lay-up, [0/90]2s, was studied. The primary means of analysis were stress-strain data taken during monotonic and incremental load tests and crack density assessments. Testing was conducted at room temperature 700°C, and 850°C. The stress-strain response was consistent for monotonic and incremental loading, except for a decrease in failure load at the elevated temperatures. Initial damage progression was also consistent, but the damage leading to failure and …

Evaluation Of A Concentration Probe For Application In A Supersonic Flow Field, John S. Alsup

Theses and Dissertations

Aspirating, concentration probes are used to measure binary gas concentrations in a supersonic flow. In the past, a tank discharge method has been used to calibrate concentration probes. An alternate calibration method has been developed and tested on a probe in a steady, subsonic/sonic flow. This study evaluated the calibration and performance of a concentration probe in a steady, supersonic flow over a range of mixture ratios of air and helium. The results of this study and a comparison of the two calibration methods are presented.
