Early Identification Of Individuals At Risk For Initiating Sexual Assault: Recommendations For College Campuses, Rachel Weller Jan 2018

Early Identification Of Individuals At Risk For Initiating Sexual Assault: Recommendations For College Campuses, Rachel Weller

Theses and Dissertations

It is estimated that 23.1% of female students are raped or sexually assaulted during college (Department of Justice, 2014). As such, universities and colleges have a duty to address and respond to college sexual assault, but despite ongoing research, policy change, and extensive media coverage, the prevalence of sexual violence on campuses remains disturbingly high. This clinical dissertation proposes an enhanced approach to college sexual violence by shifting the focus of research and prevention programming away from the victims and toward the perpetrators. The primary objective of this dissertation was to develop a collection of protocols that may be utilized …

Development Of A Preliminary Scale Of Counterproductive Experiences In Supervision: Attitudes Of Interns, Carey Sherilyn Incledon Jan 2018

Development Of A Preliminary Scale Of Counterproductive Experiences In Supervision: Attitudes Of Interns, Carey Sherilyn Incledon

Theses and Dissertations

Clinical supervision is now recognized as a distinct professional competency in the field of psychology (APA, 2015). It is a primary method for training new clinicians, providing quality assurance, and ensuring client welfare (Falender & Shafranske, 2004). However, even within the most well-intentioned supervision, counterproductive experiences (CEs) are known to sometimes occur. These can significantly interfere with the supervisory process and often result in a strained supervisory alliance, interfere with clinical training, contribute to a negative training experience, and decrease a supervisor’s ability to monitor client welfare and supervisee’s ethical behavior. The purpose of this study was to contribute to …

Altruism In Psychotherapy: Altruistic Acts As An Adjunct To Psychotherapy, Erin Santos Jan 2018

Altruism In Psychotherapy: Altruistic Acts As An Adjunct To Psychotherapy, Erin Santos

Theses and Dissertations

This study will explore the impact of altruism on the mind, brain, and body in order to investigate the potential value of using guided altruistic behavior as an adjunct to attaining the goals of psychotherapy. there is considerable evidence from religious and social practices across cultures, groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, and epidemiological research that point to the positive physical and psychological effects of helping others. This idea was initially stimulated by findings that demonstrated that altruism stimulates brain regions also important to the processes and goals of successful psychotherapy. It is hypothesized that engaging in altruistic behaviors will stimulate emotions, …

Emotional Precipitants Of Withdrawing Behavior In Couple Interactions, Jason Cencirulo Jan 2018

Emotional Precipitants Of Withdrawing Behavior In Couple Interactions, Jason Cencirulo

Theses and Dissertations

The demand-withdraw pattern of communication -- a cyclical pattern of interaction in which criticism and emotional or physical exit predominate -- is common amongst couples in distress and is linked to a number of deleterious health and relational outcomes. Inherent in the pattern are individual and dyadic difficulties regulating emotion that contribute to the process of polarization between demanding and withdrawing parties. While numerous therapeutic modalities target the pattern and attempt to facilitate its reduction through a focus on emotions underlying the pattern, few -- if any -- studies have examined the exact nature and quality of emotions that precipitate …

Meaning-Making, Transcendent Well-Being, And Collective Well-Being Among First, One-And-A-Half, And Second-Generation Immigrants Of Non-European Descent, Jennifer F. Esfandi

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined differences in meaning making and collective and transcendent well-being among first, one-and-a-half, and second generation immigrants to the United States. Given the unique challenges, stressors, and acculturation tasks each generation faces, this study aimed to broaden the scope of current research that often disregards nuances of the immigration experience to contribute to our understanding of generational differences in well-being and meaning making processes. A trend was identified in which first and second-generation immigrants to the United States felt a greater sense of national belonging; whereas one-and-a-half generation immigrants felt less well-being associated with national context. First-generation immigrants …

Exploring The Relationship Between Perceived Social Support And Readiness To Change In Therapy With Trauma Survivors, Mario Souza Jan 2017

Exploring The Relationship Between Perceived Social Support And Readiness To Change In Therapy With Trauma Survivors, Mario Souza

Theses and Dissertations

The Transtheoretical Model of Change (TTM) and its Stages of Change component has become an influential model helping clinicians understand the process of change in various kinds of treatment. Progression through the stages of change is theorized to be determined by several factors, including social support. Perceived social support has also been related to positive outcomes with clients experiencing psychiatric issues. This study was the first to link these concepts together by investigating whether perceived social support, measured by the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS; Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet, & Farley, 1988) was associated with presenting Stage of Change, …

Exploring The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma History And Working Alliance In Psychotherapy, Nina Polyné Jan 2017

Exploring The Relationship Between Childhood Trauma History And Working Alliance In Psychotherapy, Nina Polyné

Theses and Dissertations

Adults who have a history of potentially traumatic events (confrontation with actual or threatened death, serious injury, or a threat to a person’s physical integrity) in childhood may be at risk for a less established and less strong early working alliance, defined as an agreement between therapist and client on therapy goals, tasks and bond. The aim of this dissertation was to examine whether a sample of adult client-participants who presented with a self-reported history of the potentially traumatic events of childhood sexual, physical and/or emotional abuse experiences (referred to as the “childhood trauma only group”) reported differences in regard …

Novice Clinicians And The Experience Of Transcendence In Clinical Training And Supervision, Alberto Luis Ibarra Jan 2017

Novice Clinicians And The Experience Of Transcendence In Clinical Training And Supervision, Alberto Luis Ibarra

A total of fifty-three journal entries describing critical moments during their first-year clinical training and supervision experience were used for this study. Coding categories for transcendence that reflected the quality of “being more” were drawn from existing literature. In descending order of frequency, results from this exploratory study found that transcendence was experienced by these trainees, centered first and predominantly on capacity …

Evaluating Change In Depression And Well-Being In A Multi-Ethnic Sample Receiving Services Through A Community-Based Outreach And Engagement Program, Melanie Ashfar Jan 2017

Evaluating Change In Depression And Well-Being In A Multi-Ethnic Sample Receiving Services Through A Community-Based Outreach And Engagement Program, Melanie Ashfar

Theses and Dissertations

The experience of depression and overall well-being for multi-ethnic individuals is influenced by numerous factors including immigration experience, acculturative stress, English language proficiency, perceived discrimination, and ethnic identity. Multi-ethnic individuals are at a heightened risk for mental health difficulties due to limited access to resources within the community and mental health stigma. Lack of social support and culturally appropriate services magnify this disparity for this population. This study evaluates the impact of the Multi-ethnic Collaborative of Community Agencies (MECCA) Outreach & Engagement (O&E) program, a community-based program that provides culturally-responsive services, support, and resources for marginalized ethnic specific communities. Services …

Investigation Of The Multidimensional Well-Being Assessment (Mwa) In A Sample Of African Americans, Gera Anderson Jan 2017

Investigation Of The Multidimensional Well-Being Assessment (Mwa) In A Sample Of African Americans, Gera Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

Existing models and measures of well-being tend to be based on an individualistic, western worldview. In addition, when cross-cultural comparisons are made, diverse cultural groups within the same national border are typically not examined. The Multidimensional Well-Being Assessment (MWA) was developed because of the absence of a culturally relevant measure to assess the well-being of those whose worldview is more consistent with collectivism. Although much attention has been given to detrimental forces in the lives of African Americans, less consideration has been given to assessing well-being in this population. In this study, a nonrandom sample was used to examine the …

Early Identification Of Individuals At Risk For Psychosis: Recommendations For Colleges And Universities, Sylvia Lizette Lares Jan 2017

Early Identification Of Individuals At Risk For Psychosis: Recommendations For Colleges And Universities, Sylvia Lizette Lares

Theses and Dissertations

Psychotic disorders can instill a tremendous amount of distress on affected individuals (Srihari et al., 2014). Research has established that decreasing the duration of untreated psychosis can yield moderate improvements in the ultimate outcome of persons with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders (Gonçalves, de Rosalmeida Dantas, & Banzato, 2016; Reading & Birchwood, 2005). There exists a plethora of research directed at early identification of individuals at risk for psychosis within community-based settings (e.g., Johannessen et al., 2001; Power et al., 2007; Srihari et al., 2014). However, there have been limited efforts to generalize such endeavors to a college environment in the United States, …
