Detecting Subtle Brain Injury In College Students, Bryant Steury Jan 2019

Detecting Subtle Brain Injury In College Students, Bryant Steury

Theses and Dissertations

Clinicians at University Counseling Centers (or UCCs) are at the epicenter of a unique demographic in that they may encounter individuals from diverse backgrounds in every sense of the term. In addition to the “traditional” college student, they may also provide clinical care to student-athletes and current or returning military personnel. One injury that impacts every demographic grouping a counselor will treat is head trauma. Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) have become a subject of increasing interest among clinicians with an emphasis on proper diagnosis and post-concussive care. Literature was extensively reviewed, as were related and empirically established interventions. A mindfulness and meaning-focused half-day workshop was then created. Additionally, a manual was developed to help licensed mental health professionals who work with veterans implement …

First-Generation College Students' Family Role Transitions In College: A Psychoeducational Support Group, Kimia Poosti Jan 2019

First-Generation College Students' Family Role Transitions In College: A Psychoeducational Support Group, Kimia Poosti

Theses and Dissertations

The college student population continues to grow diverse in many ways, including the evolving cohorts of first-generation college students (FGCS). These students, whose student generational status is defined by having parents who have not enrolled in post-secondary education, enter college with a different background than their peers who have parents familiar with the college experience. This difference accounts for some challenges regularly faced by FGCS, including sensed tension within their family system and overall distress as they transition from their home-oriented to school-oriented roles. This student population lacks resources that aid understanding and management of new challenges within the family …

A Manualized Parent Psychoeducation And Nutrition Program And Its Impact On A Sense Of Community: A Pilot Study, Nahaal Binazir

Theses and Dissertations

Parenthood is an experience that is both joyful and anxiety provoking. Amidst a number of pressures, new parents may encounter depressed feelings, consistent anxious thoughts or various other stressors. These factors can also lead to the development of poor nutritional habits, which further exacerbate psychological symptoms and can create a destructive cycle in their lifestyles. Research indicates that one’s sense of community (or conversely social isolation) can further impact parental experiences - which include one’s sense of competence, affect directed towards their children and their overall satisfaction. In considering this, a quantitative and partially qualitative pilot study was conducted to …

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this dissertation was to synthesize information from the empirical literature, psychology professional organizations and other relevant sources into a graduate-level curriculum for education in professional advocacy for psychology. Remarkably low involvement by psychologists in advocacy is theorized to be due to a lack of training, awareness and professional values related to advocacy. This dissertation proposes that graduate school education is an optimal and effective …

Development Of A Preliminary Scale Of Counterproductive Experiences In Supervision: Attitudes Of Interns, Carey Sherilyn Incledon

Clinical supervision is now recognized as a distinct professional competency in the field of psychology (APA, 2015). It is a primary method for training new clinicians, providing quality assurance, and ensuring client welfare (Falender & Shafranske, 2004). However, even within the most well-intentioned supervision, counterproductive experiences (CEs) are known to sometimes occur. These can significantly interfere with the supervisory process and often result in a strained supervisory alliance, interfere with clinical training, contribute to a negative training experience, and decrease a supervisor’s ability to monitor client welfare and supervisee’s ethical behavior. The purpose of this study is to identify what emotions underlie demanding behavior in both men and women during marital demand-withdraw conflict interactions. Six …

Theses and Dissertations

Middle Eastern individuals represent a heterogeneous group comprised of different nationalities, languages, and religious identifications.
