Promoting Resilience In Latino/A Youth: An Examination Of Resilience Research And Its Implications For The Developmental Outcomes Of U.S.-Born Latino/A Youth, Darlene R. Moreno

Resilience research has done much to shift attention away from a deficit perspective in mental health theory and practice to a more strength-based approach. Despite often being cited as one of the populations most at risk for negative developmental outcomes, some Latino/a youth demonstrate resilience in the face of adversity. To further expand knowledge and understanding of resilience and protective processes among U.S.-born Latino/a youth, the current study sought to integrate existing findings related to protective factors identified in research associated with parenting as well as other areas of development with those being generated in the field of resilience with …

Addressing Mental Health Needs On College Campuses: Utilizing Recovery Principles That Encourage Hope, Community, Inclusion, Recovery On A Continuum, Peer Support, And Stigma Reduction, Traci M. Bank

Theses and Dissertations

There has been an undeniable upward trend of college students reporting mental health conditions, and university counseling centers unable to solely manage the influx of students requiring services. As such, many higher educational institutes have created and implemented various ways to support these students and encourage help-seeking behaviors. Stigma-reduction and peer support programs appear to be the most widely recognized and developed, however, research indicates that students continue to struggle with psychological distress despite these efforts. The recovery model, which is rooted in treating substance abuse disorders, has shown efficacy in its application towards mental health treatment and has relevance …

Self-Perceived Cognitive Decline, Neuropsychological Functioning, And Depressive Symptoms In Hiv+ Spanish-Speakers, Ahoo Karimian Jan 2016

Self-Perceived Cognitive Decline, Neuropsychological Functioning, And Depressive Symptoms In Hiv+ Spanish-Speakers, Ahoo Karimian

Theses and Dissertations

Within the United States, HIV is a growing epidemic that has important neuropsychological and functional consequences. Early detection and treatment of HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) is associated with better outcomes. In major metropolitan areas such Los Angeles County, HIV disproportionately impacts the Latino community. For those individuals who are primarily Spanish-speakers, there may be limited access to comprehensive neuropsychological assessment in the preferred language. Consequently, self-reports of cognitive functioning are often relied on to help determine the presence of HAND. However, self-reports of cognitive decline may be influenced by factors such as depressed mood, variable motivation, and culture, raising important …

Psychological assessment represents a core competency domain that continues to be uniquely associated with professional psychology. The purpose of this study was to conduct a national, online survey of psychology internship directors to examine their perspectives regarding current practices, emerging trends, and needed changes regarding psychological assessment at the …

The Fragmentation Of Self And Others: The Role Of The Default Mode Network In Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Aldrich Chan

One example is the Default Mode Network (DMN), which is implicated in human beings’ sense of self and ability to connect with others. This qualitative study explored the impact of physical and emotional traumata on the structures and functions of the DMN. The goal was to determine if dysregulation of …

A Clinician's Guide To Working With Female Veterans And Their Children, Deniz (Mustafoglu) Ahmadinia Jan 2016

A Clinician's Guide To Working With Female Veterans And Their Children, Deniz (Mustafoglu) Ahmadinia

Theses and Dissertations

The influx of females into the military in recent years has drawn increasing attention to the impact of extended and often repeated deployments on parent-child attachment. The challenges associated with deployment may be particularly taxing on young children due to their emotional and cognitive immaturity, lack of coping skills and dependence on their caregivers for daily functioning. While children’s reaction to parental deployment varies by age, the longer and more frequently a parent is deployed, the greater the psychological, health and behavioral risk for the child. These adjustments can be complicated when mothers suffer psychological distress related to combat exposure, …

Themes In Therapy With Emerging Adults: A Qualitative Study, Brian Louie Jan 2016

Themes In Therapy With Emerging Adults: A Qualitative Study, Brian Louie

Theses and Dissertations

The path to adulthood has traditionally been marked by demographic transitions, such as graduating from college, attaining employment, becoming married, and having a child. Previous models of development have conceptualized adolescence as a time of identity exploration and consolidation. However, in the US, as well as many other countries, the timeline for attaining the aforementioned markers has been delayed. Additionally, a significant portion of individuals between the ages of 18 to 29, across several counties, report not seeing themselves fully as adults, and ascribing internal changes, such as taking responsibility for one’s actions, as more indicative of adulthood status. Emerging …

Welcome Home: A Manual For The Loved Ones Of Returned Combat Veterans, Corrine Barner Jan 2016

Welcome Home: A Manual For The Loved Ones Of Returned Combat Veterans, Corrine Barner

Theses and Dissertations

Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom are the first long-term wars fought with an all-volunteer army. This has led to fewer available soldiers who are deployed more frequently and for longer periods of time. The impact of these deployments is significant and has been found to increase likelihood for substance abuse, mental health disorders, and concerns in the veteran, or service member’s, social functioning and overall adjustment upon returning to civilian life. There have been significant developments in our understanding of these issues, as well as effective interventions and treatment. However, many veterans still do not seek or …

The Neuroscience Of Fear And Anxiety: A Primer For Clinicians, Lionel Lee Jan 2016

The Neuroscience Of Fear And Anxiety: A Primer For Clinicians, Lionel Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Over the last few decades, research in affective neuroscience has led to considerable insights into the biology of fear and anxiety. For those in the practice of psychotherapy, these advances hold the potential for explaining the evolutionary utility of these emotions and targeting psychotherapeutic interventions to neurobiological correlates when these emotions go awry. The conversation of neuroscience, however, has yet to find a comfortable place in the therapy room. Translational and conceptual disparities owing to the historical split between psychology and neuroscience, continue to present challenges to their integration. The present study seeks to reframe clinicians’ understanding of the biological …

Cyberpal: A Mobile Resource For Cyberbullying, Beverly S. Shieh Jan 2016

Cyberpal: A Mobile Resource For Cyberbullying, Beverly S. Shieh

Theses and Dissertations

Bullying continues to be a global concern in schools and communities, especially in light of its adverse short- and long-term impacts on youth with respect to both psychiatric and physical health (Espelage & Swearer, 2003; Rodkin, Espelage, & Hanish, 2015; Witted & Dupper, 2005). As a result, numerous programs and resources aimed at preventing bullying and intervening with both victims and perpetrators have been developed. An increased use of computer-mediated communications (CMCs) among adolescents (Patchin, 2013) has lead to the emergence of a new form of bullying called cyberbullying, which involves intentional acts of aggression through online or cellular phone …
