Attachment Style And Perceived Stress In College Students, Jason Dorin
Attachment Style And Perceived Stress In College Students, Jason Dorin
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact that attachment (as measured by an adult attachment measure) has on a college student's perceived stress levels. A sample of seven hundred and twenty-seven college students ranging from 18 to 30 years (N=727; 73.2% female, 26.8% male; 46.8% Hispanic/Latino, 18.2% Asian/Pacific Islander, 13.3% Caucasian, 7.4% other/mixed, 5.0% Middle Eastern, 4.5% African American/Black, 4.5% Armenian, and 0.3% Native American) completed two self-report questionnaires assessing attachment styles (ECR-S) and perceived stress levels (PSS). Analyses revealed a statistically significant relationship between an adult's level of secure attachment and level of perceived stress. The …
Trainee Therapist Responses To The Discussion Of Trauma In Therapy, Courtney Bancroft
Trainee Therapist Responses To The Discussion Of Trauma In Therapy, Courtney Bancroft
Theses and Dissertations
Responses to disclosures/discussions of trauma can have lasting impacts on survivors who choose to share their experiences and historically have been categorized as positive, negative, and/or neutral responses with corresponding effects on the survivor. Literature recommends the use of tenets and techniques reminiscent of therapeutic common factors (e.g., listening skills, empathy, support, validation, creating a safe environment and strong therapeutic alliance) when responding to trauma. However, existing research focuses on reactions to survivors' disclosures outside of therapy and there is little research focusing on therapists' responses. Specifically, there are no studies that investigate how therapists or trainees are actually responding …

A Guide For Mental Health Practitioners Working With Collective Trauma Victims From Latin America: An Experiential Approach, Melissa Cordero
Theses and Dissertations
A resource guide for mental health practitioners working with Latino victims of collective trauma was developed based on a review of the literature. The development of the resource was also informed by two structured interviews with experts in the field of collective trauma within the Latino population. Review of the literature and structured interviews were used to develop culturally sensitive treatment approaches for victims of collective trauma from Latin America. The resource guide offers clinicians culturally adapted interventions, including PTSD measures, a table to identify culture bound syndromes, PTSD psychoeducation handouts (provided in Spanish and English), relaxation skills (e.g. breathing …
The Construct Of Self Within A Multicultural Context: A Critical Analysis, Amy Kim
The Construct Of Self Within A Multicultural Context: A Critical Analysis, Amy Kim
Theses and Dissertations
This critical analysis of the literature explores the construct of self from indigenous perspectives to increase cultural responsiveness in psychological theory, research, and practice. Mainstream psychology addresses various aspects of self, including self-esteem, authentic self, self-actualization, and true self (Elliott & Coker, 2008; Kernis, 2003; Kernis & Goldman, 2006; Maslow, 1964; Rogers, 1961), without defining self or what it means to be a human being. Theories of self are essentially theories of what it means to be a human being (Logan, 1986). Despite the breadth of interest, research, and theory in self, there is a pervasive omission of clear and …
Developing A Model For Understanding Mindfulness As A Potential Intervention For Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Steven I. Rudoy
Developing A Model For Understanding Mindfulness As A Potential Intervention For Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Steven I. Rudoy
Theses and Dissertations
The paucity of effective alternative or augmentative treatments available for OCD coupled with the emerging potential of mindfulness-based treatments indicate that exploring the potential utility of such interventions for the OCD population is a useful area of inquiry. In addition, although more general examinations of the mechanisms by which mindfulness contributes to positive change have been conducted, those mechanisms of action have never been theoretically linked with the mechanisms of action believed to underlie the mental processes in OCD. The current study will include a critical analysis of the existing literature covering the cognitive and biological bases for understanding the …
The Use Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy To Address Shame In Binge Eating Disorder, Lauren Harb
The Use Of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy To Address Shame In Binge Eating Disorder, Lauren Harb
Theses and Dissertations
To date, research on Binge Eating Disorder is limited compared to studies on other eating disorders, including Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa. Given that Binge Eating Disorder recently became an independent diagnosis in the DSM-5, has significant medical implications, and commonly involves psychiatric comorbidity, it is worthwhile to explore contributing factors and evidence-based treatment for the disorder. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is an evidence-based treatment for Binge Eating Disorder, and most experts agree that while it yields positive treatment results, there is room for improvement in treatment. Shame is an important contributing factor in the development and maintenance of Binge Eating …
Student Therapists' Use Of Self-Disclosure With Clients Who Have Experienced Trauma, Krista Kircanski
Student Therapists' Use Of Self-Disclosure With Clients Who Have Experienced Trauma, Krista Kircanski
Theses and Dissertations
Therapist self-disclosure is a controversial topic in that it has been historically and widely debated in past research and literature across theoretical orientations. Much of the existing self-disclosure research focuses on the effects that therapist self-disclosure has on the therapeutic relationship, using varied methodology in its definition and measurement of how, when, and in what context therapist self-disclosure is utilized. There are also very few studies that investigate frequency rates of therapist self-disclosure; of those that do exist, results are mixed. Additionally, there is little to no research on how self-disclosure is used by student therapists, in actual psychotherapy sessions, …

Religious Coping And Perceived Stress In Emerging Adults, Gila Frank
Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of this study were to: (1) examine the use of religious/spiritual coping by emerging adults coping with perceived life stressors; (2) assess the relationship between positive and negative forms of religious coping, and overall religious/spiritual coping with perceived stress; and (3) identify the specific religious/spiritual coping behaviors used by emerging adults when in times of perceived stress. The study analyzed self-report data collected from 715 emerging adults from a diverse undergraduate public university in California. Frequency analysis indicated that emerging adults commonly use prayer for self and others, count their blessings, and try not to sin when under …
Self-Concept And Recovery : The Effects Of Stigma On Survivors Of Sex Trafficking, Pamela Alquitran Counts
Self-Concept And Recovery : The Effects Of Stigma On Survivors Of Sex Trafficking, Pamela Alquitran Counts
Theses and Dissertations
Survivors of sex trafficking often face complex and complicated situations upon exiting. Stigmatization is a barrier that challenges efforts to heal and rebuild relationships. This study aimed to identify how survivors of trafficking understand the stigma from their families and communities, and how this experience of stigma affects their overall sense of self-concept and belief in their ability to cope and overcome their predicament. Results from interviews with six survivors of trafficking indicate that survivors carry multiple layers of stigma that are worsened by the addition of stigma associated with being trafficked for prostitution. Negative evaluations about the woman maintain …
Development Of A Preliminary Scale Of Counterproductive Experiences In Supervision : Attitudes Of Clinical Psychology Doctoral Students, Nina Grayson
Theses and Dissertations
Clinical supervision is pivotal to the assurance of client welfare and in the development of clinical competency in the supervisee. In the process of guiding the professional and clinical development of supervisees, the supervisor monitors the provision of ethical and appropriate psychological care in order to promote the most successful clinical outcome for the client (Falender & Shafrankske, 2004). However, there may be events or experiences that can lead to negative outcomes. Any event or experience that hinders the supervisee's exercise and development of clinical competence, potentially endangers the welfare of the client, and contributes to a poor experience of …
Psychological Care For Type 1 Diabetic Adolescents: Designing A New Model Of Integrated Care, Stephanie R. Young
Psychological Care For Type 1 Diabetic Adolescents: Designing A New Model Of Integrated Care, Stephanie R. Young
Theses and Dissertations
Diabetes mellitus is among the most common chronic diseases in children and adolescents, affecting approximately 1 in 400 children. Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) requires a complex and arduous daily management regimen. The disease can present dramatic changes in daily life, placing a significant psychological burden on the child. Behavioral and psychological factors can significantly influence the course and progression of T1DM. These interactions are bidirectional--metabolic and biological fluctuations produce alterations in emotions and behaviors, and psychological functioning predicts glycemic control and other medical outcomes. A particularly high-risk group within the T1DM patient population is adolescents. Given the critical biological, …
The Multidimensional Wellbeing Assessment: Preliminary Validation In An Iranian Sample, Nicole Moshfegh
The Multidimensional Wellbeing Assessment: Preliminary Validation In An Iranian Sample, Nicole Moshfegh
Theses and Dissertations
Although nations with a dominant worldview of individualism are a minority in the world as a whole, most psychological models are generated based on research conducted in these countries. Existing models and measures of well-being tend to have an individualistic, Western cultural bias, making it difficult to assess the well-being of those whose dominant worldview is more consistent with collectivism. Due to the absence of an existing cross-culturally relevant measure of well-being, the Multidimensional Well-Being Assessment (MWA) was developed. As attention to Middle Eastern populations has not typically received much consideration in psychological literature, this study aimed to inform researchers …
The Assessment Of Alcohol Use Disorders Among Homeless Men In Residential Treatment, Stacy L. Pike
The Assessment Of Alcohol Use Disorders Among Homeless Men In Residential Treatment, Stacy L. Pike
Theses and Dissertations
Homelessness continues as a grim reality that has devastating effects upon individuals and families from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Alcohol abuse is one of the most common problems reported by homeless individuals in the U.S. Additionally, research has consistently demonstrated a significant relationship between homelessness and mental disorders such as depression. Given the rates of alcohol abuse among homeless persons, it is important that clinicians providing mental health services to the homeless have reliable, valid methods for assessing substance abuse. The main focus of this archival study was to examine the usefulness of the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) …
Ethnic Differences In Delusional Content In Schizophrenia: A Comparative Analysis Of Delusional Symptoms In Individuals Of White European Descent And Latino Descent, Jessica A. Valluzzi
Ethnic Differences In Delusional Content In Schizophrenia: A Comparative Analysis Of Delusional Symptoms In Individuals Of White European Descent And Latino Descent, Jessica A. Valluzzi
Theses and Dissertations
Although the phenomenon of psychosis in schizophrenia has been extensively studied, limited attention has been paid to the relationship of ethnicity/culture and the form and quality of psychotic symptoms. It is widely assumed that culture significantly influences the phenomenology of mental illness. Psychotic experiences, such as delusions and hallucinations, are likely no exception. There is a relatively small body of literature on cross-cultural differences in delusional symptoms that has yielded mixed findings. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the literature by examining potential differences in delusional symptoms among 2 cultural groups of schizophrenia patients: individuals of Latino …

The Psychometric Utility Of The Drug Abuse Screening Test Among Treatment-Seeking, Homeless Men, Brittany N. Winters
The Psychometric Utility Of The Drug Abuse Screening Test Among Treatment-Seeking, Homeless Men, Brittany N. Winters
Theses and Dissertations
Homelessness in the United States is recognized as a grave societal problem with longstanding and pervasive implications. A substantial body of research has shown that substance use disorders occur at higher rates among homeless adults than among housed persons. Mental disorders, particularly depressive disorders, are also known to occur at substantially higher rates among the homeless. Given the prevalence of these conditions, it is important that clinicians working with homeless adults have access to reliable and valid assessment tools. The purpose of this study was to examine the usefulness of the Drug Abuse Screening Test-20 (DAST-20) in a sample of …
