A Structured Reality, Jeremy Berke Dec 2014

A Structured Reality, Jeremy Berke

Theses

Science has become an arbiter of truth in today's society. For example, think of how people say "It's a scientific fact" to imply that their position is infallible. As such, we should understand what science can tell about the universe. In this thesis I argue that science is telling us about the structure of reality, and that science only illuminates the relations among things, and not the things themselves.

Capturing The Effects Of Public Opinion Polls On Voter Support In The Ny 25th Congressional Election, Heather Knappen Dec 2014

Capturing The Effects Of Public Opinion Polls On Voter Support In The Ny 25th Congressional Election, Heather Knappen

Theses

This thesis explores the relationship between public opinion polls and voter support and asks whether exposure to a public opinion poll creates an unfair advantage for the candidate winning in that poll. The experimental results from this study were used to test the hypothesis that exposure to an opinion poll, with a wide lead for one of two candidates, would cause voter support to increase for the candidate who was leading in the poll (i.e. a bandwagon effect). In 2012, a random sample of 101 registered voters in the NY 25th Congressional District participated in two telephone surveys. In each …

To better understand the effects of various system attributes and to help improve the theory behind lidar sensing of complex surfaces, an …

Progress In Energy Storage Technologies: Models And Methods For Policy Analysis, Schuyler W. Matteson Dec 2014

Progress In Energy Storage Technologies: Models And Methods For Policy Analysis, Schuyler W. Matteson

Theses

Climate change and other sustainability challenges have led to the development of new technologies that increase energy efficiency and reduce the utilization of finite resources. To promote the adoption of technologies with social benefits, governments often enact policies that provide financial incentives at the point of purchase. In their current form, these subsidies have the potential to increase the diffusion of emerging technologies; however, accounting for technological progress can improve program success while decreasing net public investment.

This research develops novel methods using experience curves for the development of more efficient subsidy policies. By providing case studies in the field …

Passivation Of Amorphous Indium-Gallium-Zinc Oxide (Igzo) Thin-Film Transistors, Nathaniel Walsh Dec 2014

Passivation Of Amorphous Indium-Gallium-Zinc Oxide (Igzo) Thin-Film Transistors, Nathaniel Walsh

Theses

Thin-film transistors (TFTs) with channel materials made out of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) and polycrystalline silicon (poly-Si) have been extensively investigated. Amorphous silicon continues to dominate the large-format display technology; however newer technologies demand a higher performance TFT which a-Si:H cannot deliver due to its low electron mobility, µn ~ 1 cm2/V*s. Metal-oxide materials such as Indium-Gallium-Zinc Oxide (IGZO) have demonstrated semiconductor properties, and are candidates to replace a Si:H for TFT backplane technologies.

This work involves the fabrication and characterization of TFTs utilizing a-IGZO deposited by RF sputtering. An overview of the process details and results from recently fabricated …

Aligning Carbon Fibers In Micro-Extruded Composite Ink, Chaitanya G. Mahajan Dec 2014

Aligning Carbon Fibers In Micro-Extruded Composite Ink, Chaitanya G. Mahajan

Theses

Direct write processes include a wide range of additive manufacturing techniques with the ability to fabricate structures directly onto planar and non-planar surfaces. Most additive manufacturing techniques use unreinforced polymers to produce parts. By adding carbon fiber as a reinforcing material, properties such as mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity can be enhanced. Carbon fibers can be long and continuous, or short and discontinuous. The strength of carbon fiber composite parts is greatly increased when the fibers are preferentially aligned. This research focuses on increasing the strength of additively manufactured parts reinforced using discontinuous carbon fibers that have been …

Silicon Doping Profile Measurement Using Terahertz Time Domain Spectroscopy, Chih-Yu Jen Dec 2014

Silicon Doping Profile Measurement Using Terahertz Time Domain Spectroscopy, Chih-Yu Jen

Theses

Doping profiles in silicon greatly determine electrical performances of microelectronic devices and are frequently engineered to manipulate device properties. To support engineering studies afterward, essential information is usually required for physically characterized doping profiles.

Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), spreading resistance profiling (SRP) and electrochemical capacitance voltage (ECV) profiling are mainstream techniques for now to measure doping profiles destructively. SIMS produces a chemical doping profile through the ion sputtering process and owns a better characterization resolution. ECV and SPR, on the other hand, gauge an electrical doping profile from the free carrier detection in microelectronic devices. The major discrepancy between …

How Disgust Affects Romantic Attraction: How Our Moods Affect Our Judgments Of Attractiveness, Nicholas Phelan Dec 2014

How Disgust Affects Romantic Attraction: How Our Moods Affect Our Judgments Of Attractiveness, Nicholas Phelan

Theses

Facial attractiveness is an important part of our initial judgments of people and in our ability to determine their compatibility as a mating partner. Just as mating is evolutionarily important, the emotion disgust is one of the most evolutionarily beneficial emotions as it helps keep us away from poisonous and possibly infectious substances or foods. We instinctively avoid people with facial scars and other facial deformities because these are seen as a sign of illness or generally poor well-being. Facial attraction is one component of how we choose a mate. The current experiment examined whether or not being disgusted created …

Implementation Of Cross-Training For Multi-Shift Worker Allocation, Aditya Gandhi Dec 2014

Implementation Of Cross-Training For Multi-Shift Worker Allocation, Aditya Gandhi

Theses

In workforce allocation, gaps between workers available and workers needed at various operations result in production delays and a loss of profitability for the manufacturer. These gaps can be reduced by overtime assignments of workers from other shifts. However, for a multiple shift planning horizon, a mix of cross-training of workers over different tasks along with overtime assignments may be a good strategy. This work develops an industry-motivated cross-training framework that identifies workers and operations for normal, overtime, and training assignments. A mixed integer programming model that integrates all three assignment tasks is formulated and solved. The production scenario consists …

Temporal Signature Modeling And Analysis, Jiangqin Sun Dec 2014

Temporal Signature Modeling And Analysis, Jiangqin Sun

Theses

A vast amount of digital satellite and aerial images are collected over time, which calls for techniques to extract useful high-level information, such as recognizable events. One part of this thesis proposes a framework for streaming analysis of the time series, which can recognize events without supervision and memorize them by building the temporal contexts. The memorized historical data is then used to predict the future and detect anomalies. A new incremental clustering method is proposed to recognize the event without training. A memorization method of double localization, including relative and absolute localization, is proposed to model the temporal context. …
