An Exploratory Study Of Adolescents' Communicative A Ttitudes, Perceptions Of Behavior, And Life Change Events As Potential Factors In Development Of Essential Hypertension, Susan Heath Falvo

Student Work

In the past 50 years, social scientists and medical researchers have explored many aspects of human behavior and the psyche which appeared related to various physical disorders. This endeavor evolved into a discipline known as "psychosomatic medicine." Methodologies and perspectives within this discipline have varied widely over the years and many studies have yielded Inconclusive findings (Lipowski, 1977; Lazarus, 1980). However, a review of the psychosomatic literature reveals a t least one common dimension: the nature of one's face-to-face transactions is vitally linked to one's physical well-being.

One medical researcher who described the relationship between human Interaction and physiological processes …

"Theophilus North", James W. Eisenhardt Dec 1983

"Theophilus North", James W. Eisenhardt

Student Work

I was born an identical twin, and the twin only lived a few hours, but he would have been called Theophilus; so, this is my other self. The framework is the same as mine, but he's a very different fellow from me; so, it's how my life might have been had I been born that other fellow. It's first autobiography and then fiction, but I don't know of any other work where the author was imagining himself as his anti-self. I'm dutiful, I’m conscientious, I’m school masterish, but Theophilus is a helluva fella. A liar but a very good man--and …

The subjects were eighty-three two- and five-year old children who participated in immediate recall memory tasks for toys, pictures in a story and nonstory context, and ingredients used in making graham cracker cookies. These children were tested in their own homes. Long term memory for toys and ingredients was also assessed at one week. Parents were asked to record children's spontaneous comments in a scripted diary for the week following the experimenter's visit. At the end of the week, a photograph of the experimenter and child, which had …

The Development Of A Personnel Policy Handbook For Certified And Classified Employees In The School District Of Ralston, Richard J. Bonham Aug 1983

The Development Of A Personnel Policy Handbook For Certified And Classified Employees In The School District Of Ralston, Richard J. Bonham

Student Work

The legal authority to provide a system of public education rests with the state; thus, the state constitution and legislative statutes authorizing school districts are sources of that district's power. It is, however, left to the voters of the local school district to elect the citizens who will govern the schools and determine policy within the parameters established by constitutional and legislative provisions. As an agency of the state, one of the school board's most important jobs is to see that the state's education laws and the rules and regulations of the state are implemented in the school district.

Employer's Financial Aid To Employees For Education: Are Some Educational Barriers Removed?, Jerome L. Greenberg Aug 1983

Employer's Financial Aid To Employees For Education: Are Some Educational Barriers Removed?, Jerome L. Greenberg

Student Work

"The aim of adult education, as I see it, is to inspire grown-ups to be something more than they are now and to do their work better than they do it. Its beginning is wherever one finds oneself. It ends only when ambition ceases to function. At its best, it leads to constantly increasing richness of life, better appreciation of what life offers, great satisfaction in the use of mind and body, and better understanding of the rights and duties of one's fellowman." (James E. Russell, 1978) The purpose of this field project was to assess the problems faced by …

Faulkner's Satyrikon And Tragic Vision: "Absalom, Absalom!" And "The Sound And The Fury", Patrick H. Brennan Aug 1983

Faulkner's Satyrikon And Tragic Vision: "Absalom, Absalom!" And "The Sound And The Fury", Patrick H. Brennan

Student Work

Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury and Absalom, Absalom!, having escaped the pejorative category of “regional literature” by virtue of their technical excellence, occupy estimable positions in the main body of twentieth-century American literature. Part of the widespread interest they arouse is owing to the hold that the Old South has over the American public at large. As the precipitator of the American Civil War and as the repository of the aristocratic way of life that in its way mirrored the feudal societies of Europe, the Old South has given rise to a body of legend that is steeped in …

Reproduction And Morphology Of Two Annual Taxa Of Sporobolus (Poaceae)., Elvera W. Skokan Aug 1983

Reproduction And Morphology Of Two Annual Taxa Of Sporobolus (Poaceae)., Elvera W. Skokan

Student Work

Morphology and reproduction were studied in two annual taxa of Sporobolus (Poaceae) at eight locations in eastern Nebraska. Estimated percent cleistogamy was 93.2% in S. neglectus and 83.8% in S. vaginiflorus in specimens collected throughout the 1982 growing season. Anthers of cleistogamous florets were smaller in size and lower in number than anthers of chasmogamous florets. Pollen-ovule ratios were significantly lower in cleistogamous than in chasmogamous florets and cleistogamous florets showed precocious development. Agamospermous reproduction may also be present in the taxa. The lack of intermediate forms between the two taxa in the locations studied may be attributable to the …

Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors Jul 1983

Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in muscular strength/endurance between prepubescent and adult males. Specifically, gains via free weights along with girths, weight, skeletal widths, skinfolds, and somatotype changes were compared between the two groups before and after an eight week weight training program. Both groups contained both control and training subjects in order to determine changes attributable to training. Differences between the mean gains in performance, after adjusting for inital differences, were analyzed to shed some light on effects of puberty.

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Intensive Clinical Instruction In Spelling Strategies On The Decoding Skills Of Reading Disabled Students, Deirdre Breathnach Jul 1983

An Investigation Of The Effect Of Intensive Clinical Instruction In Spelling Strategies On The Decoding Skills Of Reading Disabled Students, Deirdre Breathnach

Student Work

There appears to be a general agreement among educators that a close relationship exists between the skill of reading and the skill of spelling. Since both reading and spelling serve as major components of communication, parallels exist between factors necessary for success in spelling and reading (Chall, 1967; Wallace and Larsen, 1979). After observing methods employed by students in spelling unfamiliar words, Kottmeyer (1959) concluded that skills used in decoding words in reading are also used in attempts to spell correctly.

Problems Of The Multidisciplinary Team, Gladys H. Rumbaugh Jul 1983

Problems Of The Multidisciplinary Team, Gladys H. Rumbaugh

Student Work

A review of literature on multidisciplinary teams indicates problems in the teams' functioning center around four questions: (a) Who collects what information for the decision-making process? (b) Is that information based on nonbiased, technically adequate data? (c) Is there active participation by all members in the decision-making process? and, (d) Is there consensus among the team members as to classification, placement, and program planning? In the present paper focus is directed upon question (b). This study assessed the degree of redundancy between the General Reading Comprehension Core of the Test of Reading Comprehension: A Method for Assessing the Understanding of …

The Utilization Of Industry Developed Management Training Programs To Enhance The In-Service Training Of School Administrators, Carl F. Jeanetta

Student Work

Management development programs in business, government, military, and educational organizations comprise a major industry in the United States today. These programs vary significantly among organizations in terms of commitment, program content, and format. However, the reasons for conducting management development programs are similar among all organizations: (1) to prepare managers to assu,e greater responsibilty in the organization; (2) to help managers cope with internal and external pressures associated with their job; (3) to explain existing organizational operating procedures, goals, etc., and changed thereto; (4) to supplement the formal education of managers by providing training not received in colleges in universities; …

Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors Jul 1983

Comparison Of Responses To Weight Training In Prepubescent And Adult Males, Margaret M. Sailors

Student Work

The effect of overload training on adults has been considered for thousands of years. Centuries before Christ, Milo of Crotona carried a calf on his back daily until the animal was full-grown, resulting in one of the earliest accounts of the overload principle (Bergan & Scoles, 1979). Results of overload training on adults have been well documented (Tanner, 1952; Hellebrandt & Houtz, 1958; Berger,1962a; 1962b; Rasch & Pierson, 1963; Berger & Hardage, 1967; Stull & Clark, 1970; Leighton, Holmes, Benson, Wooten & Schmerer, 1967; Wilmore, 1975; Gettman, Ward & Hager, 1982). However, how overload affects children and adolescents is barely …

Vegetational Changes Under Isolated Juniperus Virginiana In An Eastern Nebraska Bluestem Prairie., Janet L. Gehring

Student Work

Changes in species composition of a Bluestem prairie were evaluated under isolated, 10-22 year old Juniperus virginiana (Eastern Red Cedar) in eastern Nebraska. Percent canopy cover was measured in full-canopy, canopy-edge, and open-canopy plots which were located along transects oriented to the cardinal compass directions. A total of 53 species were recorded. Andropogon scoparius and A. gerardii dominated open-canopy and canopy-edge plots; Poa pratensis and A. scoparius dominated full-canopy plots. Canopy cover of most prairie species decreased under full canopy but Poa pratensis and Carex spp. increased. There was a positive correlation between tree size and both the decrease of …

Use Of Radio To Provide Models And Reinforcers In Behavior Therapy: Increasing Compliant Behavior In Retarded Children, Richard Warner May 1983

Use Of Radio To Provide Models And Reinforcers In Behavior Therapy: Increasing Compliant Behavior In Retarded Children, Richard Warner

Student Work

Our age is an electronic one; electronic gadgetry has proliferated in the home, and modern media devices, especially radio and television with their continuous barrage of information and programming have been long taken for granted. Children learn much from radio and television, acquiring a variety of information from these electronic sources which is reflected in their dress, speech and musical preferences (Haney & Ullmer, 1975; Potter, 1978a Reeves & Miller, 1978). Indeed a great deal of controversy has become associated with determining what sorts of things children have been learning from media (e.g. Lefrancois, 1973). It is estimated young children …

Differences In Social Perceptions Between American And West African Students: Implication For Social Work Education, Adeze C. Uhiara

Student Work

The United States has become a world market for education especially for international students from the third world countries. In view of this, it has become necessary to examine the participation of these young internationals in American education which is primarily designed to meet the needs of the American people. This study used four hypotheses to test whether there is a significant difference in social values and perceptions between American students currently studying in an American university, West African students studying in American universities, and West Africans who had previously studied in American universities and have returned home. It was …

Pilot Implementation Of The Nebraska Reading Retrieval System At Norman Rockwell Elementary School, Bernard Vanis Apr 1983

Pilot Implementation Of The Nebraska Reading Retrieval System At Norman Rockwell Elementary School, Bernard Vanis

Student Work

There is a variety of different reading systems in use in the elementary schools today. The most commonly found systems are often organized into a basal reading series which many schools use as their major source of reading instruction. However, no matter how complete a basal series is, it can't be the answer for all of the students all of the time. To incorporate this area of weakness or needed review, teachers often use supplemental materials from a variety of sources. Some of the problems with gathering supplemental material are that of time to search, money to acquire, space to …

Evaluation Of The Avoha Title I Preschool, Dennis L. Johnson Mar 1983

Evaluation Of The Avoha Title I Preschool, Dennis L. Johnson

Student Work

Funding for programs in local schools is being cut by all levels of government. Local schools are being told they have to get by on less money and to get more out of each dollar spent. School districts can become only so efficient, therefore, the question as to which programs will have to be eliminated must be answered. Apparently this situation will continue for some time, and studies must be done to determine which programs help the most children, along with the degree to which they are helping those children. In other words, which programs are really helping students develop …

Factors Facilitating Or Impeding The Initial Placement Of Women Graduates In Educational Administration., Eleanor Renee Anderson-Jackson

Student Work

American women have a gift of time which no other group of women in the history of the world have had, The average life-span is approaching 80 years compared to 47 years at the turn of the century (Osborn, 1977). Industrial research and technology have eliminated much of the drudgery in the home. Now, anxiety of preparing for additional years and hours without the 'benefit of structure, while attempting to satisfy one's own needs and the needs of many others, produces a "challenging uncom fortableness" among women today. This phenomenon is often interpreted as abnormal behavior, eliciting such comments as, …

Identifying Important Phonological Features In The Expressive Use Of Signs By A Non-Oral Mentally Retarded-Emotionally Disturbed Child., Mary Wunder Lopez

Student Work

This study investigated the phonology of a sign system when it was used to train expressive vocabulary development in a mentally retarded-emotionally disturbed child. The study specifically dealt with the salience of movement and number of hands involved in the construction of a sign. For the subject in the study, two-handed signs involving movement were the most readily learned. Further comparison among the categories observed indicated that the parameter of movement appeared to be an important factor in expressive learning of while the number of hands involved was less important. Recent studies show that ease of acquisition may be influenced …
