The aim of this study was to determine if adjacent structures with similar radiodensity and variable scan settings (field of view and voxel size) significantly impact the ability to accurately identify the tooth socket facial lamina dura, facial bone surface, facial bone margin, as well as the facial bone thickness measurement. Materials & Methods: CBCT scans …

Acceptability And Preferences For Empirically-Supported Psychological Treatments, Amanda Gorlick Sep 2015

Acceptability And Preferences For Empirically-Supported Psychological Treatments, Amanda Gorlick

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Over the past decade, mental health has been moving in the direction of empirically-supported treatments. Currently, there are many empirically-supported treatment modalities that have been shown to be efficacious for various psychological disorders, specifically mood and anxiety disorders. However, the face-to-face treatment literature reflects low levels of treatment access and participation. Approximately half of participants with clinically-significant levels of depression received some treatment, evidence-based or not (Kessler et al., 2007). Even for participants who are able to successfully access services, engagement with treatment is often low, and dropout rates are high. There is some evidence that participants’ preferences for treatment …

Dietary Intake And Bio-Activation Of Nitrite And Nitrate In Newborn Infants, Jesica Ann Jones Sep 2015

Dietary Intake And Bio-Activation Of Nitrite And Nitrate In Newborn Infants, Jesica Ann Jones

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Nitrate and nitrite are commonly thought of as inert end products of nitric oxide (NO) oxidation, possibly carcinogenic food additives, or well-water contaminants. However, recent studies have shown that nitrate and nitrite play an important role in cardiovascular and gastrointestinal homeostasis through conversion back into NO via a physiological system involving enterosalivary recirculation, bacterial nitrate reductases, and enzyme-catalyzed or acidic reduction of nitrite to NO. The diet is a key source of nitrate in adults; however, infants ingest significantly less nitrate due to low concentrations in breast milk. In the mouth, bacteria convert nitrate to nitrite, which has gastro-protective effects. …

Prostate Cancer Screening Intention Among Black Men: A Multivariate Analysis, Crystal Renee Clarke Sep 2015

Prostate Cancer Screening Intention Among Black Men: A Multivariate Analysis, Crystal Renee Clarke

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of death among Black men, and widespread lack of screening contributes to the mortality burden. The purpose of this present study was to evaluate the effect of relationship intimacy with individual intent to screen using the digital rectal examination (DRE) among Black men. The human ecological theory of human development was a good fit for this present study, as individual health status and population health disparities are embedded in larger historical, geographic, socio-cultural, economic, and political contexts. The ecological framework allows researchers to attempt to identify the influences of all these factors. …

Nondysphoric Depressive Symptoms And Cognitive Abilities In Healthy Older Adults, Clint H. Norseth Sep 2015

Nondysphoric Depressive Symptoms And Cognitive Abilities In Healthy Older Adults, Clint H. Norseth

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Research has shown that depression is associated with poorer cognitive performance and cognitive decline. Cognitive functions such as processing speed, language ability, memory, and executive functions have been found to be affected in older adults with depression. However, there is limited research focused on the effects of minimal or mild depressive symptoms in older adults who do not meet criteria for a depressive disorder. Older adults are more likely than any other population to endorse depressive symptoms in the absence of typical dysphoric symptoms that would qualify an individual for a depressive disorder. Understanding the effects of nondysphoric depressive symptoms …

Do Clergy In Hidalgo County, Texas Serve As A Bridge Or Barrier To Mental Health Services?, John C. Park Sep 2015

Do Clergy In Hidalgo County, Texas Serve As A Bridge Or Barrier To Mental Health Services?, John C. Park

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Clergy play the role of frontline mental health (MH) workers for many Americans (Ellison et al., 2006; Wang et al., 2005; Winet, Majors, & Stewart, 1979). There is insufficient information in regards to what the clergy believe about MH and how they respond to MH related concerns. What we know indicates that clergy are not sufficiently equipped or trained to respond adequately to people suffering from issues of MH. Using face to face interview process, 301 clergy members of the faith based organizations (FBO) in Hidalgo County, Texas (HCT) were interviewed. Key findings suggest that the clergy engage in significant …

Recreational Diving And Hawksbill Sea Turtles (Eretmochelys Imbricata) In A Marine Protected Area, Christian Hayes Sep 2015

Recreational Diving And Hawksbill Sea Turtles (Eretmochelys Imbricata) In A Marine Protected Area, Christian Hayes

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Recreational diving is a form of ecotourism that is traditionally viewed as an ecologically sustainable activity prompting increased awareness for the marine environment. Recent studies, however, indicate that recreational diving may cause unintended behavioral changes in marine macrofauna. Few studies, however, have specifically investigated the effects of recreational diving on sea turtles. I conducted in-water observations and turtle sightings surveys from June 9 to August 21, 2014, in Roatán, Honduras, to determine if differences in dive site use and diver behavior alter the behavior of critically endangered hawksbill sea turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) in a marine protected area (MPA). I found …

Clinical Essentials For Obesity, Ryan Garry Montanari Sep 2015

Clinical Essentials For Obesity, Ryan Garry Montanari

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In order for health psychologists to be prepared to address obesity, foundational information on obesity is required. Psychologists have the potential to assist with lifestyle and behavioral modifications, especially when weight problems are tied to mental health conditions. Furthermore, clinicians can focus on triggers for unhealthy choices, in addition to unhealthy beliefs about eating and weight. The purpose of this research project is to provide health psychologists with essential information on the scope, associated risks, and evidence-based interventions for obesity so that they will be better prepared to deliver effective treatments.

Palmitic Acid Activation Of Dendritic Cells: Implications For Type 2 Diabetes, Dequina Angelina Nicholas Sep 2015

Palmitic Acid Activation Of Dendritic Cells: Implications For Type 2 Diabetes, Dequina Angelina Nicholas

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Infiltration of immune cells into visceral adipose tissue is observed in type 2 diabetes development. Monocytes are recruited to obese visceral adipose tissue in large numbers and retain the ability to differentiate into dendritic cells, important antigen presenting cells in the immune system. Differentiation of monocytes into dendritic cells likely accounts for the increased number of dendritic cells observed in the adipose tissue of type 2 diabetic patients. We have demonstrated this differentiation process is regulated in part by a major reduction of linker histone proteins. In adipose tissue, dendritic cells are exposed to high levels of saturated fatty acids. …

Indicators Of Ambiguous Loss In Families With Traumatic Brain Injured Members, Mynda Ohs Sep 2015

Indicators Of Ambiguous Loss In Families With Traumatic Brain Injured Members, Mynda Ohs

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

People who have encountered medical traumas can experience significant changes in their lives. As a result, the family members become caregivers and experience increased stress and ambiguous losses (AL). These losses are often unacknowledged even by the family and cause significant distress. It is important that the family acknowledge these losses and allow themselves time to grieve and adapt to the changes in their lives. While it is widely known that caregivers experience this stress, and programs exist to help support these families, there is less known about the effectiveness of these programs. This study has been designed to explore …

Treatment Manual For Improving Self-Esteem, Body Image, And Interpersonal Effectiveness Of Female Juvenile Offenders, Victoria Liao Sep 2015

Treatment Manual For Improving Self-Esteem, Body Image, And Interpersonal Effectiveness Of Female Juvenile Offenders, Victoria Liao

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Few interventions have been established for female juvenile offenders, despite the unique psychological problems reported in this population. This is an important issue requiring greater attention, as there has been an increase in the total amount of incarcerated female youth. Additionally, the trajectory leading to delinquent behaviors and incarceration among females is distinct from that of males. Given the need for interventions targeting female juvenile offenders, a treatment manual was developed to improve self-esteem, body image, and interpersonal effectiveness in this population using principles of dialectical behavioral therapy.

An Attribution-Emotion Approach To Political Conflict, Daniel Joel Northington Sep 2015

An Attribution-Emotion Approach To Political Conflict, Daniel Joel Northington

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The current political system in the United States is marked by extreme levels of partisan hostility and polarization, which has not only resulted in a dysfunctional congress, but also increasing conflict between partisan groups in the general electorate. While political scientists have offered various explanations for this phenomenon, social-psychological theories provide opportunities for empirical investigation of psychological explanatory factors. This study applied Betancourt’s attribution-emotion model of conflict and violence to the ultimate attribution error in order to develop a contemporary and comprehensive understanding of the psychological factors relevant to partisan-based intergroup relations. Five hundred sixty-four participants from various demographic backgrounds …

The Dynamics Of Human And Rattlesnake Conflict In Southern California, Aaron Grant Corbit Aug 2015

The Dynamics Of Human And Rattlesnake Conflict In Southern California, Aaron Grant Corbit

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Human-rattlesnake conflict occurs when rattlesnakes are discovered in human-dominated areas and are deemed to pose an unacceptable risk to humans because of their venomous bite. In this dissertation, I investigated the nature of this conflict from the perspectives of both the behavioral and survival risks posed to rattlesnakes and the medical risks posed to humans. In the first of three studies, I investigated the effects of short- and long-distance translocation (SDT and LDT) of nuisance wildlife as a way of mitigating conflict between humans and naturally occurring Red Diamond Rattlesnakes (Crotalus ruber) near residential development in southern California. Snake activity …

Psychological Services For Pediatric Victims Of Non Accidental Trauma, Robyn Finckbone Jun 2015

Psychological Services For Pediatric Victims Of Non Accidental Trauma, Robyn Finckbone

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Child abuse is a significant problem within our society. In 2010, there were approximately 1,560 fatalities as a result of child abuse; 17.6% of those deaths were the direct result of physical abuse and 80% occurred in children under the age of 4. There is a dearth of research examining severe physical abuse among children and, as a result, the demographics of this population are unclear as are the psychological referrals and services provided to these children. The aims of the current study are to identify the demographic characteristics of child victims of non-accidental trauma (NAT, i.e. physical abuse) as …

Long-Term Hypoxia Alters Ovine Fetal Adrenal Enos And Cortisol Biosynthesis, Elizabeth Anne Newby Jun 2015

Long-Term Hypoxia Alters Ovine Fetal Adrenal Enos And Cortisol Biosynthesis, Elizabeth Anne Newby

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Maintaining normal levels of cortisol in response to chronic stress, while retaining the ability to respond to acute stress, is important for ensuring normal fetal growth and development. Long-term hypoxia (LTH) causes adaptations in the fetal hypothalamopituitary- adrenal (HPA) axis that maintain basal cortisol levels but enhance production in response to a secondary stress. Nitric oxide (NO), produced by endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) in the adrenal cortex, plays a significant role in regulating cortisol production in the LTH fetus. The production of NO is regulated by eNOS activity which can be altered via phosphorylation through key signaling pathways. In …

Effect Of A Simulation Course On Medication Administration Safety Of Malaysian Nursing Student, Noraidah L. Guntalib Jun 2015

Effect Of A Simulation Course On Medication Administration Safety Of Malaysian Nursing Student, Noraidah L. Guntalib

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Improving safety during medication administration has been a goal of today’s healthcare environment. The complexity of both medication use and the medication management process, especially in the in-patient setting, creates a significant risk for hospitalized clients. Medication administration errors have harmed millions of people and cost millions of dollars worldwide, including Malaysia. Patient safety is dependent on nurses (including student nurses), who must consistently demonstrate behaviour fundamental to the safe administration of medication. Therefore, nursing education must provide teaching and foster learning in students to prepare them to be a safe nurse. Literature has shown that deficiencies of knowledge and …

Cultural Beliefs And Self-Efficacy In Diet Adherence Among Type 2 Diabetics, Sonika Kravann Ung Jun 2015

Cultural Beliefs And Self-Efficacy In Diet Adherence Among Type 2 Diabetics, Sonika Kravann Ung

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) is a global epidemic that disproportionately affects socioeconomic and ethnic minority populations (International Diabetes Federation, 2013). Mapuches, the largest Native American population in Chile, shifted from the lowest incidence of T2D to equal rates in comparison to mainstream Chileans within a decade (King & Rewers, 1991; Perez-Bravo et al., 2001). This may be due to economic growth and rapid nutritional shifts (Yu & Zinman, 2007). Previous research has identified the importance of cultural beliefs in explaining health behavior (Betancourt, Flynn, & Ormseth, 2011). This study, guided by Betancourt’s Integrative Model for Culture, Psychological Factors and Behavior …

Hospice Care In Malaysia: Knowledge, Attitude And Time Of Discussion, Shanthi Ellen Solomon Jun 2015

Hospice Care In Malaysia: Knowledge, Attitude And Time Of Discussion, Shanthi Ellen Solomon

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Despite available and adequate hospice care resources, fewer terminally ill patients in Malaysia use hospice care services than one might reasonably expect. It is reported that only around 10% of patients who die of terminal illness in Malaysia, die in hospice care (Devaraj, 2003). The projected number of individuals that should receive palliative care in Malaysia is 17 to 27% (Connor & Sepulveda Bermedo, 2014). In order to study why hospice care is not accessed as expected, nurses and doctors in Penang and Sabah completed a survey measuring knowledge of current hospice practices, attitude toward caring for the dying, personal …

MANOVA test revealed similar adjustment status for civilians and former recruited youth twelve years after the end of the civil war. …

Human Olfactory Perception: A Literature Review, Catherine Jameson Lee Kelly Jun 2015

Human Olfactory Perception: A Literature Review, Catherine Jameson Lee Kelly

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

There has been wide debate about the degree to which humans are impacted by olfaction. Despite former assumptions that we are dominantly visual/auditory creatures, recent studies suggest that humans are more highly macrosmatic than originally thought. Humans have demonstrated behavioral, physiological, cognitive and affective responses to olfactory stimuli even when the stimuli were perceived unconsciously. The mechanism by which humans perceive these signals is unclear; there is much debate as to whether the vomeronasal organ is functional in humans. Regardless of the mechanism of perception, it is clear olfaction is psychologically impactful for humans. The following literature review summarizes research …
