The major limiting factor in kidney clinical transplantation is the shortage of transplantable organs. The current inability to distinguish viability from non-viability on a prospective basis represents a major obstacle in any attempt to expand organ donor criteria. Consequently, a way to measure and monitor a relevant analyte to assess kidney viability is needed. For the first time, the initial development and characterization of a metabolic microsensor to assess kidney viability is presented. The rate of glucose consumption appears to serve as an indicator of kidney metabolism that may distinguish reversible from irreversible kidney damage. The proposed MetaSense (Metabolic Sensor) …

Although a body of research exists examining the influence of citizen disrespect on police decision making and use of force, that research is limited in its capacity to appropriately conceptualize citizen disrespect. In fact, little is known about the verbal and nonverbal behaviors that for officers signify disrespect - in the United States and abroad. Utilizing survey data from officers in a mid-sized city police department in the United States and the London Metropolitan Police, this research seeks to understand the breadth of behaviors that officers find disrespectful, to discover how often officers perceive that they are experiencing disrespectful citizens, …

The present study assessed the acceptability of both the IQ-achievement discrepancy approach and the Response-to-Intervention (RTI) approach to LD classification among teachers, school psychologists, and school administrators. Relationships between each of these variables and perceived origins of learning difficulties among these professionals were also assessed. RTI received more favorable acceptability ratings when compared with the IQ-achievement approach, and more weight was attributed to instructional influences than either biological or environmental influences across all three groups, although significant between-group differences were noted. Biologically and instructionally-based explanations of learning difficulties were significant predictors of IQ-achievement acceptability, but in opposite directions. In contrast, …

The evolution of the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) into the Magnetic Force Microscope (MFM) and Magnetic Resonance Force Microscope (MRFM) has had a substantial impact on the characterization of nanoscale phenomena. Detection of 10-17 Newtons per root Hertz has occurred with use of an ultra-sensitive cantilever along with optical interferometry methods within these geometries. The sensitivity of these platforms is dependent on the characteristics of the cantilever, where increased length and a low Young's modulus increase the force sensitivity (meters/Newtons). Using IC fabrication techniques, the realization of generating cantilevers with this sensitivity is feasible, but stress compensation layers are required …

The primary goal of this study was to examine cognitive and dispositional factors that may influence self-regulated motivation from the perspective of Social Cognitive Theory (SCT: Bandura, 1986, 1989, 2002). In particular, this study examined the potential moderating effects of regulatory focus (Higgins, 1997) and counterfactual thought (Roese, 1994) on the feedback - goal revision relationship. In a sample of 297 college students, the results showed that feedback, whether based on a standard of performance or self-set goals was a strong predictor of goal level set by participants. Conflicts between work and family domains have been found to negatively affect physical and psychological wellbeing. In studies with European Americans, the relationship between work-family conflict and psychological distress appears to be comparable across gender; however, research with Latinos has found that women experienced significantly more work-family conflict than men. The majority of the work-family literature has focused on work variables that contribute to or reduce work-family conflict and distress; thus, the beneficial aspects of family have been largely ignored. Increased health concerns due to the emission of gases linked to the production of tropospheric ozone by petroleum based fuel burning engines has resulted in the codification of more stringent emissions regulations domestically. Emissions regulations on commercial jetliners are one of the areas to be met with stricter standards. Currently there is not a sensing technology that can detect the emissions gases in the exhaust stream of a jet turbine engine with lower detection limits that meet these standards.

In radiographic imaging the contrast can be enhanced with the use of monochromatic radiation compared to conventional broadband source. Monochromatic beam radiation can be produced with conventional sources by diffraction off of flat monochromator crystals, but this produces a low monochromatic intensity for imaging.

This present work consists of multifrequency Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) studies of the model compounds by performing EPR experiments on Vanadyl acetylacetonate [VO(acac)2] and Vanadyl meso-tetraphenylporphin [VO(TPP)] at different frequencies (3GHz, 9.9GHz, 23.8GHz, 34GHz and 95GHz) in motional narrowing regime and at 9.9 GHz in rigid limit regime. Additional experiments were performed on PD-Tempone (Perdeuterated 2, 2, 6, 6-Tetramethyl-4-piperidone N-Oxide) spin labels in Cyclodextrins and glycerol/water mixtures at 9.3GHz from the rigid limit to the motional narrowing regime.

Economic liberalization in 1991 marked a significant turning point for India since its independence in 1947. After decades of slow growth, the economy suddenly took off at a steady and fast pace after 1991. We investigate the factors that propelled India's long-term economic growth and short-run economic cycles pre and post 1991. Using a multi-sector dynamic general equilibrium model specifically tailored for transition economies, we find that service sector productivity, coupled with a structural shift in the economy, have been the drivers of the recent spate of growth in India. At certain axial moments in history new religious worldviews emerge to replace prior perspectives that are no longer adequate or persuasive. A new worldview opens new possibilities for the human religious quest for meaning, being, and salvation. A fundamental conviction underlying this dissertation is that we are living in a "post-mortem age" - that is, an era defined by profound challenges to the centuries-long dominant religious worldview, culminating in the twentieth century experience of the "death of God." Let $(X,\mathcal{B},m,\tau)$ be a dynamical system with $(X,\mathcal{B},m)$ a probability space and $\tau$ a measurable, invertible, measure preserving transformation. The present thesis deals with the almost everywhere convergence in $\mbox{L}^1(X)$ of a sequence of operators of weighted averages. Almost everywhere convergence follows once we obtain an appropriate maximal estimate and once we provide a dense class where convergence holds almost everywhere. The weights are convolution products of members of a sequence of probability measures $\{\nu_i\}$ on $\mathbb{Z}$. In the last section, we also prove a variation inequality for this type of sequence operators.

This study explores the advocacy patterns of over 200 nonprofit human service providers active in both anti-violence and anti-poverty service arenas. A mailed survey to organizations associated with three statewide advocacy organizations in New York State examined the organizational factors associated with three advocacy activities: case advocacy, public policy education, and legislative issue advocacy. Using empowerment theory, predictors that captured the degree of ethnic diversity of an organization's staff and board, and whether or not consumers served on the staff or board, and whether having social workers as advocates were examined along with other control variables to explain the conditions …

My dissertation, Translating the Transatlantic: West African Literary Approaches to African American Identity, takes a literary-historical approach to the question of Anglophone West African conceptions of African American identity, an often overlooked topic. It represents an important intervention in the fields of African diaspora and African literary studies, both of which continue to suffer from a US-centric view of Africa, and supplements work done in postcolonial theory and cultural studies to include West African conceptions of cultural translation. Purpose and Background: The current study examines the link between beliefs and experiences around domestic violence and religion, seeking to understand more about the ways in which Jews understand and experience domestic violence, while also looking to examine the context of these results in terms of religious comparison. The literature shows a preliminary connection between religion and domestic violence, in that victims have utilized their faith and faith communities as coping resources, but have also reported negative experiences within their religious communities. It is widely accepted that IgM provides the first line of defense against during microbial infection prior to the generation of high-affinity, isotype-switched antibodies, which is the hallmark of long-lived lived immunity and immunological memory. The overall objective of these studies was to address the role of IgM in the generation and maintenance of protective immunity during intracellular bacterial infection. We have identified a population of CD11clo plasmablasts that were responsible for nearly all of the antigen-specific IgM production in the spleen. Obesity is a major health crisis in the United States, with approximately two-thirds of the population qualifying as overweight and, of those, almost one half qualifying as obese (CDC, 2007). While there are a myriad of causes of obesity, a great deal of evidence shows that many individuals, and particularly women, eat as a coping response to stress (e.g., Greeno & Wing, 1994). The nucleocapsid (NC) protein NCp7 of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1(HIV 1) is a small basic protein with two zinc finger motifs. NCp7 has key roles in virus replication and structure, which rely on its interactions with nucleic acids. We investigated the interaction of NCp7 with Transactivation Response Element (TAR) DNA which is critical for minus strand transfer during the HIV 1 reverse transcription. The EPR spin probe nitroxide was used as the reporter. Four serotypes of Cryptococcus are responsible for most human and animal infections. C. gattii , serotype B and C, are the primary the causative agent of cryptococcosis in immune competent individuals whilst, C. neoformans var. neoformans serotype D, and C. neoformans var. grubii serotype A are most prevalent in immunocompromised hosts world-wide. C. gattii is recognized as a species distinct from C. neoformans based on differences in clinical manifestations, morphology, biological characteristics, and environmental niche. For several decades historians have struggled with the dynamics of cross-cultural contact and the creation of perceptions of the "other". Detailed studies of the European image of the Islamicate world during the pre-modern period rarely analyze why and how these representations were formed. Through the analysis of Jesuit missionary correspondences made during the first half of the seventeenth century, this study aims to articulate the variables that impacted the development of Jesuit attitudes toward the people and environment of Greater Syria.
