Officers' Perceptions And Experiences With Citizen Disrespect : A Cross-National Analysis, William Christopher Pizio Jan 2009

Officers' Perceptions And Experiences With Citizen Disrespect : A Cross-National Analysis, William Christopher Pizio

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Although a body of research exists examining the influence of citizen disrespect on police decision making and use of force, that research is limited in its capacity to appropriately conceptualize citizen disrespect. In fact, little is known about the verbal and nonverbal behaviors that for officers signify disrespect - in the United States and abroad. Utilizing survey data from officers in a mid-sized city police department in the United States and the London Metropolitan Police, this research seeks to understand the breadth of behaviors that officers find disrespectful, to discover how often officers perceive that they are experiencing disrespectful citizens, …

Work-Family Conflict And Psychological Distress In U.S. Latino Mothers And Fathers : The Moderating Effects Of Familismo And Gender, Ingrid Vanessa Rodriguez Jan 2009

Work-Family Conflict And Psychological Distress In U.S. Latino Mothers And Fathers : The Moderating Effects Of Familismo And Gender, Ingrid Vanessa Rodriguez

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Conflicts between work and family domains have been found to negatively affect physical and psychological wellbeing. In studies with European Americans, the relationship between work-family conflict and psychological distress appears to be comparable across gender; however, research with Latinos has found that women experienced significantly more work-family conflict than men. The majority of the work-family literature has focused on work variables that contribute to or reduce work-family conflict and distress; thus, the beneficial aspects of family have been largely ignored. There is some evidence to suggest that a supportive family life could have positive effects on the work domain, thereby …

Doubly Curved Crystal Optics For Monochromatic And Diffraction Enhanced X-Ray Imaging, Santosh Kumar Sahoo Jan 2009

Doubly Curved Crystal Optics For Monochromatic And Diffraction Enhanced X-Ray Imaging, Santosh Kumar Sahoo

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

In radiographic imaging the contrast can be enhanced with the use of monochromatic radiation compared to conventional broadband source. Monochromatic beam radiation can be produced with conventional sources by diffraction off of flat monochromator crystals, but this produces a low monochromatic intensity for imaging.

Toward A New Mystical Poetics Of God In The Post-Mortem Age : From God As The Supreme Being To God As The One-And-Only Being, John Francis O'Neill Jan 2009

Toward A New Mystical Poetics Of God In The Post-Mortem Age : From God As The Supreme Being To God As The One-And-Only Being, John Francis O'Neill

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

At certain axial moments in history new religious worldviews emerge to replace prior perspectives that are no longer adequate or persuasive. A new worldview opens new possibilities for the human religious quest for meaning, being, and salvation. A fundamental conviction underlying this dissertation is that we are living in a "post-mortem age" - that is, an era defined by profound challenges to the centuries-long dominant religious worldview, culminating in the twentieth century experience of the "death of God." While disturbing and disruptive for many, this historical condition can also be seen as a liberating and even providential event, opening the …

Translating The Transatlantic : West African Literary Approaches To African American Identity, Kelly Opal Secovnie Jan 2009

Translating The Transatlantic : West African Literary Approaches To African American Identity, Kelly Opal Secovnie

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

My dissertation, Translating the Transatlantic: West African Literary Approaches to African American Identity, takes a literary-historical approach to the question of Anglophone West African conceptions of African American identity, an often overlooked topic. It represents an important intervention in the fields of African diaspora and African literary studies, both of which continue to suffer from a US-centric view of Africa, and supplements work done in postcolonial theory and cultural studies to include West African conceptions of cultural translation. My project also examines numerous plays by Ghanaian and Nigerian playwrights to understand the ways that African American characters and culture are …

Domestic Violence And Faith Communities : An Exploratory Study Examining Beliefs And Experiences Of Jews, Non-Jews, And Rabbis, Amanda Sisselman Jan 2009

Domestic Violence And Faith Communities : An Exploratory Study Examining Beliefs And Experiences Of Jews, Non-Jews, And Rabbis, Amanda Sisselman

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

Purpose and Background: The current study examines the link between beliefs and experiences around domestic violence and religion, seeking to understand more about the ways in which Jews understand and experience domestic violence, while also looking to examine the context of these results in terms of religious comparison. The literature shows a preliminary connection between religion and domestic violence, in that victims have utilized their faith and faith communities as coping resources, but have also reported negative experiences within their religious communities. The literature only alludes to potential connections between beliefs regarding domestic violence and religion. Existing studies use mainly …

Generation And Maintenance Of Protective Igm Responses During Intracellular Bacterial Infection, Rachael Denise Racine Jan 2009

Generation And Maintenance Of Protective Igm Responses During Intracellular Bacterial Infection, Rachael Denise Racine

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

It is widely accepted that IgM provides the first line of defense against during microbial infection prior to the generation of high-affinity, isotype-switched antibodies, which is the hallmark of long-lived lived immunity and immunological memory. The overall objective of these studies was to address the role of IgM in the generation and maintenance of protective immunity during intracellular bacterial infection. We have identified a population of CD11clo plasmablasts that were responsible for nearly all of the antigen-specific IgM production in the spleen. Moreover, selective depletion of the CD11c-expressing B cells during acute infection resulted in a complete loss in the …
