At the dedication of South Hall, the focus was on the buildings importance to a Michigan Law legal education and the institution's gratitude for the wxtraordinarily generous donors who made the building possible.

The Honorable Cornelia Kennedy, '47, and The Honorable Margaret Schaeffer, '45, reminisce about their early years as lawyers. Kennedy, '47 has been called the "First Lady of Michigan Judiciary" for being the first woman appointed to the federal bench in Michigan, and just the fourth woman in the nation to be appointed a federal district court judge, 1979. Her sister, Schaeffer, '45, was sworn in as a judge five years later in the 47th Judicial District in Farmington Hills.

The James E. and Sarah A. Degan Professor of Law and director of the Program in Refugee and Asylum Law (PRAL) at Michigan Law, Hathaway is one of a small number of globally regarded refugee law experts. He has helped to develop Michigan Law into a center of scholarship and education in the field.

In Freedom Papers: An Atlantic Odyssey in the Age of Emancipation (Harvard Univesity Press, 2012), Rebecca J. Scott and Jean M. Hébrard trace the stories of the descendants of a woman who came to be called Rosalie, kidnapped in West Africa in the late 18th century and deported as a slave to the French colony of Sanit-Domingue-modern day Haiti.

In Michigan Law's first year, 1859-60, students could choose from a total of 13 courses, including Criminal Law, Easements, Domestic Relations, and Contracts. The Law Department, as it was called then, did not have its own building. Three part-time faculty members taught 90 students who pursued the two-year degree. A college degree was not required for admission.
