Where Have All The Flowers Gone?: A Modular Systems Perspective Of It Infrastructure Design And Productivity, Pratim Datta
Where Have All The Flowers Gone?: A Modular Systems Perspective Of It Infrastructure Design And Productivity, Pratim Datta
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Assessing value of IT infrastructure investments has been both difficult and ambiguous. This research develops and tests a conceptual framework to understand the productivity process. A lagged and recursive framework is used to trace the relationship between IT infrastructure investments, infrastructure design, and organizational productivity along with contingencies of IT management and the environment. A major contribution of this study is the use of the systems perspective to disaggregate the concepts of IT infrastructure and productivity into collectively exhaustive types. Findings reveal that IT investments do not significant affect productivity but do so when used to develop an IT infrastructure …
Staying In Or Getting Out: Social Capital And Occupational Decision-Making Among Louisiana's Croatian Oyster Harvesters, Carl Marie Riden
Staying In Or Getting Out: Social Capital And Occupational Decision-Making Among Louisiana's Croatian Oyster Harvesters, Carl Marie Riden
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Social capital-resources embedded in social structures that can be accessed or mobilized by individuals in pursuit of some goal- is the most prominent in a long line of concepts developed by social scientists who wish to incorporate social and cultural elements into models of economic behavior. The research presented here is a qualitative exploration of social capital, its forms and functions, and its relationship to the occupational decision-making of current and former oyster harvesters in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. Within this close-knit Croatian-American community, oyster harvesting has a long and rich history. As a result, extensive social capital through which individuals …
Analytical Study On Flood Induced Seepage Under River Levees, Senda Ozkan
Analytical Study On Flood Induced Seepage Under River Levees, Senda Ozkan
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A common and potentially dangerous phenomenon associated with flooding is seepage under levees and the formation of sand boils. Seepage flow due to hydrostatic head gradients of floods may cause deformation of pervious layers leading to heave, piping and sand boils. Underseepage may also cause irreversible changes in the characteristics of the porous medium. A series of independent flood events may have cumulative effects on pervious layers causing sand boils to grow. Current underseepage analyses for levees are based on steady-state flow. Transient seepage flow due to rapid changes in river head may contribute to cumulative effects and cause critical …
On Implementing Dynamically Reconfigurable Architectures, Hatem Mahmoud El-Sayed El-Boghdadi
On Implementing Dynamically Reconfigurable Architectures, Hatem Mahmoud El-Sayed El-Boghdadi
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Dynamically reconfigurable architectures have the ability to change their structure at each step of a computation. This dissertation studies various aspects of implementing dynamic reconfiguration, ranging from hardware building blocks and low-level architectures to modeling issues and high-level algorithm design. First we derive conditions under which classes of communication sets can be optimally scheduled on the circuit-switched tree (CST). Then we present a method to configure the CST to perform in constant time all communications scheduled for a step. This results in a constant time implementation of a step of a segmentable bus, a fundamental dynamically reconfigurable structure. We introduce …
Computer Assisted Screening Of Digital Mammogram Images, John Terry Sample
Computer Assisted Screening Of Digital Mammogram Images, John Terry Sample
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The use of computer systems to assist clinicians in digital mammography image screening has advantages over traditional methods. Computer algorithms can enhance the appearance of the images and highlight suspicious areas. Screening provides a more thorough examination of the images. Any computer system that does screening of digital mammograms contains components to address multiple tasks such as: image segmentation, mass lesion detection and classification, and microcalcification detection and classification. This dissertation provides both effective and efficient improvements to existing algorithms, which segment mammogram images and locate mass lesions. In addition, we provide a new algorithm to evaluate and report the …
Equations Of Parametric Surfaces With Base Points Via Syzygies, Haohao Wang
Equations Of Parametric Surfaces With Base Points Via Syzygies, Haohao Wang
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Suppose $S$ is a parametrized surface in complex projective 3-space $mathbf{P}^3$ given as the image of $phi: mathbf{P}^1 imes mathbf{P}^1 o mathbf{P}^3$. The implicitization problem is to compute an implicit equation $F=0$ of $S$ using the parametrization $phi$. An algorithm using syzygies exists for computing $F$ if $phi$ has no base points, i.e. $phi$ is everywhere defined. This work is an extension of this algorithm to the case of a surface with multiple base points of total multiplicity k. We accomplish this in three chapters. In Chapter 2, we develop the concept and properties of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity in biprojective spaces. …

Arm Crank Power And Hyperammonemia In Respones To L-Aspartic Acid Supplementation, William W. Edwards
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
PURPOSE: To examine the effect of L-Aspartic Acid (L-Asp) supplementation on short-term arm-crank power (i.e. W·min-1) and exercise-induced hyperammonemia in two gender-specific investigations. METHODS: The male investigation (MALE) used nine highly-trained intercollegiate water polo players (WP) and nine moderately-trained college students (MOD); the female investigation (FEM) used 18 recreationally-trained college students. All exercised to exhaustion on two occasions following counterbalanced double-blind ingestion of 12.5g x 2 of L-Asp or placebo (P). The warm-up phase began at 25 W·min-1 and increased in 25 W·min-1 stages every 30 seconds (constant 100 rpm). Performance began (i.e. the subjects turned …
Cross-Cultural Construct Validation Of The Learning Transfer System Inventory In Tawian, Hsin-Chih Chen
Cross-Cultural Construct Validation Of The Learning Transfer System Inventory In Tawian, Hsin-Chih Chen
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Human Resource Development has historically made a large contribution to Taiwan's economic growth. Organizations in Taiwan perceive training as one of their top priorities to maintain their competitive advantage. Although many organizations have spent considerable money on training, there has been a lack of a comprehensive, generalizable, psychometrically-sound instrument to investigate transfer of learning in Taiwan. This study cross-culturally validated the constructs of the Learning Transfer System Inventory (LTSI) for use in Taiwan. By doing so, HRD practitioners in Taiwan can benefit by having an instrument to diagnose intervening variables and improve individual performance. The LTSI was translated through a …
Molecular-Dynamics Simulations Of Self-Assembled Monolayers (Sam) On Parallel Computers, Satyavani Vemparala
Molecular-Dynamics Simulations Of Self-Assembled Monolayers (Sam) On Parallel Computers, Satyavani Vemparala
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the properties of self-assembled monolayers, particularly alkanethiols and Poly (ethylene glycol) terminated alkanethiols. These simulations are based on realistic interatomic potentials and require scalable and portable multiresolution algorithms implemented on parallel computers. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of self-assembled alkanethiol monolayer systems have been carried out using an all-atom model involving a million atoms to investigate their structural properties as a function of temperature, lattice spacing and molecular chain-length. Results show that the alkanethiol chains tilt from the surface normal by a collective angle of 25o along next-nearest neighbor direction at 300K. At …
Characteristics Of Fat Free Yogurt As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, Charles August Boeneke
Characteristics Of Fat Free Yogurt As Influenced By The Incorporation Of Folic Acid, Charles August Boeneke
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Folic acid fortification is used in the prevention of neural tube defects such as spina bifida and ancencephaly, heart defects, facial clefts, urinary tract abnormalities, and limb deficiencies. Although yogurt is not a good source of folic acid, fortification could aid in prevention of above mentioned defects. Fortification of yogurt with folic acid may or may not change its physico-chemical characteristics. Fat free sugar free yogurt was manufactured using 0, 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% of the recommended daily allowance of 400 micrograms of folic acid. Treatments included addition of folic acid at these levels before and after pasteurization. Lemon …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Application Of Water-Soluble Chiral Calix[4]Arene Derivatives In Spectroscopy And Capillary Electrokinetic Chromatography, Kim Hamilton
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation is an account of the synthesis, characterization, and application of novel water-soluble chiral calixarenes in spectroscopy and capillary electrophoresis. It is divided into four sections. The first part describes the synthesis and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) characterization of four p-t-butylcalix[4]arenes bearing L-amino acid moieties on their lower rims (CX4-AA). The structure and conformation of the derivatives have been determined using one- and two-dimensional NMR techniques. Proton and carbon-13 spectra show that the derivatives are tetra-substituted and adopt a cone conformation. The preparation and characterization of silica-bonded calixarene stationary phases for capillary electrochromatography is also reported in Chapter 2. …
Developing A Four-Mallet Marimba Technique Featuring The Alternation Of Mallets In Each Hand For Linear Passages And The Application Of This Technique To Transcriptions Of Selected Keyboard Works By J.S. Bach, Thomas Allen Zirkle
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this study is to develop a four-mallet marimba technique that utilizes alternation within each hand on linear passages, then apply this technique to selected keyboard works of J. S. Bach. This paper provides a method of training the hands for this type of alternation and will hypothesize a conception of hand positions as a method of facing the visual/spatial logistics issues of marimba performance. A performance annotation chapter will then apply the alternation sticking, and its resultant positional concepts, to three new transcriptions of J. S. Bach's inventions and a prelude and fugue from his Well-Tempered Clavier …
Gender Differences In Participation Of Physical Activities: A Comprehensive Model Approach, Kay Gordon Daigle
Gender Differences In Participation Of Physical Activities: A Comprehensive Model Approach, Kay Gordon Daigle
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine the interrelationships among gender, perceptions of peer, parent, and teacher support, perceived value and meaningfulness, perceived competence, and the intention to be physically active within a proposed model. Female and male students (N=801) enrolled in a traditional multi-activity physical education class responded to a 52-item questionnaire addressing the constructs in the model. Structural equation modeling, using LISREL, was used to identify the relationships among the constructs. Gender differences emerged in this model through direct paths as well as indirect paths among these variables. Girls were more influenced than boys by their perceptions …
