Adult Victims Of Sexual Abuse And Their Sexuality, June E. Starr May 1993

Adult Victims Of Sexual Abuse And Their Sexuality, June E. Starr

Honors Theses

The differences between adult victims of child sexual abuse and non-abused females were determined by using specific questions taken from Finkelhor's Sexual Victimization questionnaire. The results indicated that the abused group was more likely to have problems with sexual performance, sexual self esteem, and sexual identity, and have more feeling of guilt or shame.

Symmetric Designs, Difference Sets, And A New Way To Look At Macfarland Difference Sets, John Bowen Polhill Jr. Apr 1993

Symmetric Designs, Difference Sets, And A New Way To Look At Macfarland Difference Sets, John Bowen Polhill Jr.

Honors Theses

In this paper, the topics of symmetric designs and difference sets are discussed both separately and in relation to each other. Then an approach to MacFarland Difference Sets using the theory behind homomorphisms from groups into the complex numbers is introduced. This method is contrasted with the method of finding this type of difference set used by E.S. Launder in his book Symmetric Designs: An Algebraic Approach.

Age And Personality Differences In The Choice Of Mnemonic Strategy, Gretchen Witte Apr 1993

Age And Personality Differences In The Choice Of Mnemonic Strategy, Gretchen Witte

Honors Theses

Personality as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator has been shown to change with age. Specifically, older adults become more sensing, while younger adults remain more intuitive on the SN dimension. Memory and the use of mnemonic strategies, or memory aids, changes with age as well. Older adults typically report more problems with their memory, yet use fewer memory strategy aids. If adults learn and use memory aids consistent with intuitive processing in youth, the hypothesized transition to a more sensing modality in old age may cause the use of intuitive strategies to decline. Thus, the finding that older adults …

Topics In Cyclotomic And Quadratic Fields, Pam Mellinger

Honors Theses

This paper introduces cyclotomic and quadratic fields and explores some of their properties and applications to problems in number theory. After some preliminary definitions and theorems, the paper looks at the relationship between quadratic and cyclotomic fields, at Kummer's lemma on units in the pth cyclotomic field, and at the Quadratic Reciprocity Law and its applications to diophantine equations.

Wobbling Gear Drivetrain For Cordless Screwdriver, David K. Kedrowski, Scott P. Slimak Apr 1993

Wobbling Gear Drivetrain For Cordless Screwdriver, David K. Kedrowski, Scott P. Slimak

Honors Theses

Manufacturers of cordless screwdrivers use two planetary gear trains in series to reduce speed and multiply torque from a small electric motor. Alternately, a nutating gear drivetrain has the potential to create comparable speed reductions and torque multiplications. To apply nutating gear theory to a cordless screwdriver drivetrain, a study of spur gears, planetary gear reducers, bevel gears, and the theory of nutation was undertaken. Finally, a nutating design was proposed. The advantages of a nutating gear drivetrain over a conventional planetary gear train include: a decreased number of drivetrain parts, an ability to use lower-strength gear materials, a higher …

The Role Of The Seed Coat In The After-Ripening Process Of American Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana L.), Jason E. Cox Apr 1993

The Role Of The Seed Coat In The After-Ripening Process Of American Pokeweed (Phytolacca Americana L.), Jason E. Cox

Honors Theses

As plants evolve into new forms and shapes, the reproductive structures are often the last to change because of the importance of successful reproductive organs to the survival of the plant's hereditary information. Because of this particular feature, one very common method of determining how advanced a species is evolutionarily is the study of its reproductive cycle (Gifford and Foster, 1989). A few advanced classes, most notably the general class groupings of the Gymnosperms and Angiosperms, have developed seeds as a part of their reproductive cycle. Normally, there are several stages through which the seed must go in order for …

The Dominicans And Franciscans And The Influence On Early Renaissancce Art, Logan R. Helman Apr 1993

The Dominicans And Franciscans And The Influence On Early Renaissancce Art, Logan R. Helman

Honors Theses

The development of the Franciscan and Dominican Orders came from society's need to return to the basics and learn to live with peace and brotherly love. St. Dominic, in his optimistic ridigly governed, preaching and teaching Order and St. Francis with his strict codes and devout poverty started new trends in religion still present today. The art then evolved around these trends causing their popularity to expand to even greater distances and heights. Ironically, these new societies which based themselves on poverty brought about new wealth which could be seen in the churches, monasteries, and monumental paintings built up around …

Japanese Juvenile Justice: An Exploratory Look, Kym Rutherford Jan 1993

Japanese Juvenile Justice: An Exploratory Look, Kym Rutherford

Honors Theses

"Among industrialized nations, Japan has the lowest crime rate and is considered to have one of the best criminal justice systems in the world" (Thorton, 1992, p. 471). If this statement is true, what can the United States learn from Japan about crime reduction? Discussion shall focus on the chosen topic of juvenile justice. Two key questions arise when dealing with the overriding question of what the United States can learn from the Japanese justice system. First, what are the cultural factors that influence juvenile crime behavior in Japan? Second, how do the Japanese respond to their juvenile delinquents?

Voting Rights, Reapportionment, And Majority-Minority Districts, Christy Tosh Jan 1993

Voting Rights, Reapportionment, And Majority-Minority Districts, Christy Tosh

Honors Theses

The challenge is to navigate the untrodden area of reapportionment, in particular majority-minority districts. The Supreme Court has ruled in various reapportionment cases, yet these cases continue to plague the dockets of the United States Supreme Court. The focus of research is to evaluate the new phenomenon of majority-minority districts as it has progressed through constitutional amendments, civil and voting rights acts, and Supreme Court cases, all of which culminate in the 1992 elections. The 1990 Census and reapportionment were the birth of majority-minority districts. In creating these districts, one must look at the most effective percentage breakdowns in each …

The Governorship Of Bob Riley, Brian Stanford Miller Jan 1993

The Governorship Of Bob Riley, Brian Stanford Miller

Honors Theses

Without a backward glance Bob Riley, his wife, Claudia, and their daughter, Megan negotiated the Capitol stairway to the bottom floor, while above them in the House chamber legislators waited for the arrival of the 39th governor of Arkansas. At the bottom of the steps Vaughn Webb, an aide in the Secretary of State's office, presented Riley with an Arkansas state flag that had flown that morning of January 14, 1975, while several admirers applauded from the second floor railing above. Riley then left for Arkadelphia, where he would resume his role as head of the Political Science department at …

The Chopinian Heroine: A Role Model For The Self-Assertion Of Women, Heidi Fite Jan 1993

The Chopinian Heroine: A Role Model For The Self-Assertion Of Women, Heidi Fite

Honors Theses

During the nineteenth century in America, women endured many restraints placed on them by society. These social restraints were often justified in the name of chivalry and the Bible. Fundamentalist religion, with its patriarchal nature and its strict moral code, hampered women's struggle for rights. The religious and social condemnation of divorce forced many women, rather than incurring the chastisement of society by seeking divorce from drunken and worthless husbands, to spend their lives in martyrdom. Most women also resented the limitations the chivalric code imposed on the full development of their minds and personalities. This code of chivalry led …

The Extent Of Multimedia Computer Applications In The Business World, Mei Yee Lim Jan 1993

The Extent Of Multimedia Computer Applications In The Business World, Mei Yee Lim

Honors Theses

The world, or at least I, was all agog when touch screens arrived. My initial contact with touch screens was at a science exhibition in Menara MPPJ, Petaling Jaya, Malaysia in July 1987. That particular exhibit, which encouraged visitors to participate and to experiment with, was a graphic program. Visitors could use their fingers to select the drawing tool or the color they want (which is something like the tools on a MacDraw screen on a Macintosh) and use their fingers to move around the screen to draw anything they want. That added to my fascination with the world of …
