The Development Of Technological Management Model: A Conceptualization Of Computer Technology In The Workplace, Paul E. Madlock

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purpose of this dissertation was to develop a model that would serve to assist scholars, business professionals, and employees manage the influence of computer technology in the workplace. This study also focused on mandated use environments given the paucity of research in this area. In doing so, Technology Management Model (TMM) was developed. Actor Network Theory (ANT; Callon, 1986; Latour, 1987; Law, 1987) and Social Cognitive Theory (SCT; Bandura, 1986) provided support for the multifactor design of TMM. As a result, TMM was comprised of three latent variables of technological, personal, and organizational factors though to influence the attitudes …

How Do College/University Teacher Misbehaviors Influence Student Cognitive Learning, Academic Self-Efficacy, Motivation, And Curiosity?, Sara R. Banfield

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purpose of this research was to examine the relationship between teacher misbehaviors and a variety of outcome variables, including cognitive learning, motivation, curiosity, and academic self-efficacy. Research has yet to directly address how teacher misbehaviors affect cognitive learning. It is important to assess actual learning as opposed to perceived learning to truly measure how a students' learning is influenced by the negative behaviors. Motivation, curiosity, and academic self-efficacy have been found to have a positive relationship with learning. When misbehaviors were present cognitive learning and motivation were not found to be significantly influenced by misbehaviors. Academic self-efficacy and curiosity …

When Two Become One: Marital Couples' Public Performances And Couple Identity, Carrie D. Kennedy-Lightsey

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Communication researchers know little about marital couples' public performances, or how marital couples communicate as a nonsummative whole when in the presence of important others (e.g., friends, family, co-workers). Two studies were conducted to examine marital couples' public performances from a Communication Theory of Identity (CTI) (Hecht, 1993) framework. In the first study, 153 marital couples completed self-report measures to assess how marital couples' attachment styles and relationship awareness are related to identity gaps during public performances as well as how identity gaps relate to a variety of outcomes including communication satisfaction, feelings of being understood, conversational appropriateness, relationship satisfaction, …

Dialectical Tensions In Stroke Survivor Relationships, Kimberly N. Leezer

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Stroke is an unpredictable and life-altering medical occurrence which causes immediate change in stroke survivors' relationships. Previous communication researchers have focused on the dialectical tensions experienced by stroke survivors themselves. This study sought to discover dialectical tensions experienced by spouses of stroke survivors, how those dialectical tensions compare to those experienced by stroke survivors, and how time affects the dialectical tensions experienced by spouses of stroke survivors. Sixteen spouses of stroke survivors participated in interviews, and five tensions were ultimately discovered: self-preference -- partner-preference, realism -- idealism, freedom constraint, fear -- content, and emotional release -- emotional reservation. Three dialectical …

Results indicate upward mobility had significant positive correlations with the dependent variables except cognitive learning while ambivalent and indifferent orientations had significant negative …

The Development Of A Typology For Interracial Relationships, Juan M. D'Brot May 2006

The Development Of A Typology For Interracial Relationships, Juan M. D'Brot

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

The purpose of this study was to determine whether Foeman and Nance's (1999) model of interracial relationship development could be adapted into a generalizable interracial relationship typology and whether there would be distinct differences in the affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimensions of each stage. Long-table analysis of four focus group interviews confirmed differences among the four stages of Foeman and Nance's model. Further examination of focus group transcripts revealed differences between the affective, cognitive, and behavioral dimension of each stage, but few differences between the affective and cognitive dimensions across stages. Implications for the study of relationship development, limitations, and …

Transactional Distance And Student Motivation: Student Perception Of Teacher Immediacy, Solidarity Toward Peer Students And Student Motivation In Distance Education, Hye Yoon Jung Jan 2006

Transactional Distance And Student Motivation: Student Perception Of Teacher Immediacy, Solidarity Toward Peer Students And Student Motivation In Distance Education, Hye Yoon Jung

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Transactional Distance Theory is conceptually significant in that the core nature of distance in distance education is not a geographical or temporal distance but a psychological or communicational distance between students and their teacher(s), as well as among students. In spite of the conceptual significance of the transactional distance theory, the interrelationships among the construct variables and propositions of the theory are unclear. The majority of studies on transactional distance theory either used the theory solely as a conceptual framework, or proposed the refinement of the theory. Literature review indicated that the theory was found to be invalid and unreliable. …

The purpose of this examination is to determine the role of verbal aggression in Presidential debates. Using six types of verbally aggressive messages, coders examined one Presidential debate from nine Presidential elections to determine the amount of verbal aggression used by each candidate. The findings from this examination indicate that there is a pattern for the use of verbal aggression in Presidential debates. Challengers use significantly more verbal aggression than incumbents while five of the nine elections had the winner using less verbally aggressive messages than the loser. Results of this study support the theory that challengers are forced to …

Gossip As An Interpersonal Communication Phenomenon, Elycia M. Taylor Aug 2005

Gossip As An Interpersonal Communication Phenomenon, Elycia M. Taylor

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Two studies were conducted for the purpose of validating Foster's (2004) Gossip Functions Questionnaire (GFQ) which measures the reasons why people gossip (i.e., the functions of gossip). The GFQ originally consisted of four subscales that measured the functions of gossip: information, entertainment, friendship, and influence. In Study One, an exploratory factor analysis failed to reveal the four subscales Foster originally conceptualized. However, three factors were apparent that seemed to measure three separate functions of gossip: trivial gossip, influential gossip, and behavioral guidance gossip. In Study Two, a confirmatory factor analysis of a second data set failed to validate the 3-factor …
