Supervisory Control Of Machine Tool Feed Drives., Rami Shahin Jan 2004

Supervisory Control Of Machine Tool Feed Drives., Rami Shahin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

While motion control of machine tool feed drives is the targeted application. The goal of this study is to explore the relative performance potentials of supervisory control systems against the classical servo control systems; Reconfiguration aspects at the control level are the scope of this study. One of the most essential nonlinear problems faced during modeling and control stages of the CNC machining systems is called backlash. Reversal of motion for each moving axis can lead to that area of disengagement where backlash occurs due to inherently unavoidable clearance between linkages of the machine tool feed drive system. Due to …

Supramolecular Complexes Containing Pyridine N-Oxides., Dennis J. Hoffart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the first section, the coordination chemistry of a new, divergent, N,O ligand was investigated. Several metal complexes of 4,4 '-bipyridine N-monoxide, 2a, were characterised by X-ray crystallography, including CuI, Cu II, PdII, CdII, HgII, and EuIII. The observed non-covalent interactions and coordinative preferences of 2a were contrasted with those of 4,4' -bipyridine and 4,4'-bipyridine N,N '-dioxide. Each of the compounds has a unique molecular topology that can be applied to the generation of ordered, pre-designed solids. Examples of this methodology are given with respect to the CuI, Cu II, and HgII metal complexes. Chapter three is concerned with the …

Transient Local Scour By Submerged Three-Dimensional Wall Jets: Effect Of Tailwater Depth, Md. Abdullah Al Faruque

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study deals with scour caused by three-dimensional wall jets issuing from a square cross-section nozzle onto a non-cohesive sand bed. Experiments were conducted using two different nozzles and three tailwater depths. Velocity measurements were conducted using a one component laser Doppler anemometer. The densimetric Froude number was maintained below ten, while the jet expansion ratio was held greater than ten. The results indicate that the densimetric Froude number, tailwater depth and grain size to nozzle size ratio, all have an influence on the extent of scour caused by three-dimensional jets. However, each parameter has a dominant influence under …

Teachers' Interfaculty Mentorship Efforts: T.I.M.E. A Study Evaluating The Effects Of A Formal Mentoring Program On First-Year At-Risk Students, G. Salinitri

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a unique formal mentoring program at a midsized comprehensive university in Ontario. The retention rates, grade point averages (GPA) and number of courses completed by the students who participated (experimental group) were higher than the retention rates, grade point averages, and number of courses completed by the control group consisting of an equal number of first-time, full-time, credit-seeking students with programs of study and similar exiting secondary school averages (i.e., <75%). Results from surveys conducted to measure self-concept and satisfaction were not found to be significantly related to mentoring. However, the results of mentor effectiveness and evaluation suggested program satisfaction and effectiveness. Interviews were also conducted and analyzed using qualitative research methods to enrich the empirical findings. Using an explanatory approach the qualitative analysis linked the program to the theoretical foundations of the study. Findings from this study illustrate the importance of institutions investing in human capital (e.g., at risk students) through a mutually beneficial mentoring program like T.I.M.E., a practicum course designed for preservice teachers to prepare them as mentors for their students. There was clear empirical evidence that this formal mentoring program is effective with respect to achievement (GPA), failure rates and retention. Also, the qualitative data provided an enriched understanding of the effectiveness of the program to both mentee and mentor. Finally, these data clearly showed that the program could be linked to various configurations of Social Capital Theory as the executive control mechanism tying together the Theory of Involvement, the Theory of Departure and the Theory of Social Learning, with the Theory of Involvement taking the lead as the most compelling link to the success of mentoring. Tests Of Homogeneity Of Several Location And Scale Populations, And Analysis Of Paired Count Data With Zero-Inflation And Over-Dispersion., Xing Jiang Jan 2004

Tests Of Homogeneity Of Several Location And Scale Populations, And Analysis Of Paired Count Data With Zero-Inflation And Over-Dispersion., Xing Jiang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis consists of two parts, referred as Part I and Part II. Part I. Testing homogeneity of several location-scale populations. The widely used method for testing homogeneity of several normal populations is to test the equality of means based on the assumption that the variances among different groups are same. But in practice, we often get data which are different not only in means but also in variances. Singh (1986) tests the homogeneity of several normal populations simultaneously regarding commonality of means and variances based on a method by Fisher (1950). However, this problem arises not only in normal …

"Warriors Of The Working-Day" Class In Shakespeare's Second Historical Trilogy, Richard Brooke Morrill Jan 2004

"Warriors Of The Working-Day" Class In Shakespeare's Second Historical Trilogy, Richard Brooke Morrill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In Shakespeare's historical plays, we find the traditional and politically "top-heavy" historic events of monarchs, aristocrats and patriarchs, of national and international politics and of wars, civil and foreign. This is the type of practice that E.P. Thompson was challenging when he coined the polemic phrase "history from below." It is necessary, Thompson says, to rethink historiography as a means of creating national identity because of its inherent lack of sociopolitical objectivity, particularly with respect to class. "It is one of the peculiarities of the English," he writes, "that the history of the 'common people' has always been something other …

Behavior Of Pile-Supported Integral Abutments At Bridge Sites With Shallow Bedrock, John Gordon Delano Jan 2004

Behavior Of Pile-Supported Integral Abutments At Bridge Sites With Shallow Bedrock, John Gordon Delano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The advantages of constructing bridges with integral abutments are recognized by transportation agencies worldwide. However, pile supported integral abutments are limited to locations where the depth of overburden can provide fixed support conditions. In Maine, there are often cases where the depth to bedrock prohibits integral abutment bridges from being used. The goal of this research is to determine the feasibility of constructing integral abutments in conditions that cannot provide the fixed support conditions that are traditionally assumed. A finite element model was created that incorporates realistic constitutive and surface interaction models. These models allow for a good prediction of …

Estimation Of Standardized Mortality Ratio In Geographic Epidemiology, Anna Kettermann Jan 2004

Estimation Of Standardized Mortality Ratio In Geographic Epidemiology, Anna Kettermann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The analysis of geographic variation of disease and its representation on a map form an important topic of research in epidemiology and in public health in general. Identification of spatial heterogeneity of relative risk using morbidity and mortality data is required. The usual technique of disease atlas generation consists of data collection (observed number of disease cases). These data are collected during a continuous period of time (5 to 10 years). The second aspect of atlas creation relates to the analysis of these data. A traditional measure of the spatial variation is usually taken as a ratio of the number …
