Object Representation And The Rorschach: Investigation Of A Continuum Of Object Relations Impairment Across A Broad Spectrum Of Psychopathology., Gary Raymond. Keleher Jan 1983

Object Representation And The Rorschach: Investigation Of A Continuum Of Object Relations Impairment Across A Broad Spectrum Of Psychopathology., Gary Raymond. Keleher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the quality or maturity of Rorschach object representation in nonpatient controls (N = 20) and in hospitalized neurotic (N = 24), borderline (N = 26), and schizophrenic (N = 26) patients. Inclusion of these groups was based on the prediction, from object relations theory, of a relationship between severity of psychopathology and object representation impairment. Dependent measures were two object representation scales developed by Krohn and Mayman (1974) and Blatt, Brenneis, Schimek, and Glick (1976). Cross-validation of discharge diagnosis by an independent diagnostician, based on patients' clinical case summaries, was the selection criterion for psychiatric subjects. Following …

Children's Perceptions Of The Elderly: An Attributional Analysis., M. Elizabeth. Mcdermott Jan 1983

Children's Perceptions Of The Elderly: An Attributional Analysis., M. Elizabeth. Mcdermott

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not children's attributions would vary as a function of the age of the target person about whom the attribution was being made. Sixteen children, 8 boys and 8 girls, from each of grades 1, 4, 7, and 10 were interviewed. Each child was shown 8 photographs, half of which portrayed elderly individuals, and half of which portrayed young individuals. A behavioural description accompanied each photograph. Following the presentation of each photograph, each child was asked an open-ended question which was designed to elicit his/her spontaneous explanations for the behaviour. Responses …

Defensiveness In Dream Recall In Response To A Provocative Day Residue., Sheila Anne. Clyne-Jackson Jan 1982

Defensiveness In Dream Recall In Response To A Provocative Day Residue., Sheila Anne. Clyne-Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effect on dreams of either a neutral day residue, or a day residue which is evocative of psychosexual conflict. Sixty male subjects divided into two groups--frequent dream recallers and infrequent dream recallers--were exposed to one of the following stimuli: (a) a neutral picture, (b) a picture which is strongly evocative of psychosexual conflict, or (c) a picture which is similar to picture "b" but which has been modified in an effort to make it less evocative. Subjects were asked to free associate to the picture and their free associations were …

Social Network Characteristics, Social Support, And Compliance To A Chronic Hemodialysis Regimen., Peter L. Burgher Jan 1982

Social Network Characteristics, Social Support, And Compliance To A Chronic Hemodialysis Regimen., Peter L. Burgher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nonadherence to hemodialysis fluid restrictions is a particularly difficult and dangerous problem for chronic dialysis patients. Review of noncompliance studies suggests that enmeshment in a stable supportive family and peer network is predictive of improved compliance. The network model and mapping techniques, used to study how people adapt to different life stresses, provides a useful means to evaluate the relationship between support network characteristics and dialysis compliance. Forty chronic hemodialysis patients were recruited from three metropolitan dialysis units in southeastern Michigan. Noncompliance was defined as 3-month mean interdialysis weight gains one standard deviation above the population mean. Twenty noncompliant patients …

A Validation Study Of A Picture-Preference Test Of Thought Disorder., Nina. Apanasiewicz Jan 1982

A Validation Study Of A Picture-Preference Test Of Thought Disorder., Nina. Apanasiewicz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recent writers (Johnston & Holzman, 1979; Rudzinski & Auld, 1980) have pointed out that most of the currently available measures of thought disorder are unsatisfactory for the following reasons: They measure only a limited range of thinking disturbances, and they are unduly influenced by factors irrelevant to thought disorder. In order to overcome these inadequacies, Rudzinski (1979) developed the Picture-Preference Test (PPT) of Thought Disorder. Initial research on the validity of the test was encouraging and thus prompted the present cross-validation study. Two versions of the PPT thought-disorder scale were used in the present study: the regular 31-item scale, and …

A Study Of The Effect Of Death Confrontation On Death Concern Variables., Frederick Ivan. Meek Jan 1982

A Study Of The Effect Of Death Confrontation On Death Concern Variables., Frederick Ivan. Meek

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purposes of the present study were: (1) to determine relationships between psychometric death concern variables, (2) to determine if the use of a personal death fantasy exercise would significantly reduce death anxiety, (3) to ascertain the experimental effect of fantasy process variables, and, (4) to describe relationships with avoidance-confrontation continuum. Templer's (1970) Death Anxiety Scale, Ray and Najman's (1974) Death Acceptance, Thauberger's (1974) Avoidance of the Ontological Confrontation of death, and Morgan's (1975) Vivia, Death Transcendence and Meditative Awareness subtests were administered pre-, immediately following, and two weeks after subjects engaged in two visually imagined fantasy experiences. Experimental Treatment …

Personality Dimensions Of Learning Disabled Children: Age And Subtype Differences., John Douglas. Strang Jan 1981

Personality Dimensions Of Learning Disabled Children: Age And Subtype Differences., John Douglas. Strang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation includes two separate studies. Study 1 was designed to evaluate the significance of age for the personality adjustment of learning disabled children. Three rather heterogeneous groups of learning disabled children (n = 20) who differed in chronological age, were matched for WISC Full Scale IQ, degree of academic impairment in at least one subject area, educational-cultural milieu, and sex. One group was comprised of 8-year-old learning disabled children. Ten-year-old learning disabled children were contained in a second group. A third group included 12-year-old learning disabled children. The PIC (Personality Inventory for Children) profiles of these three groups of …

Sex Of The Therapist: An Exploration Of Competence Attributions As A Function Of Therapist's Gender., Cheryl Loughner-Gillin Jan 1981

Sex Of The Therapist: An Exploration Of Competence Attributions As A Function Of Therapist's Gender., Cheryl Loughner-Gillin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study was undertaken to explore the impact of therapist's gender upon competence attributions made by clients regarding the therapist. No predictions were made. Subjects were actual psychotherapy clients at one Windsor and one Detroit out-patient clinic, who were presented with a psychotherapy transcript labeled as conducted by a male or a female therapist, and then requested to fill out a short questionnaire rating the transcript therapist along a range of competency characteristics. Besides the label of the transcript, three other classification variables were employed: subject's sex, sex of the subject's actual therapist at the clinic, and whether or …

Menstrual-Cycle Distress: A Study Of Its Relation To Feminine Identity And Sexual Inhibition., Ornella. Piccolo Jan 1981

Menstrual-Cycle Distress: A Study Of Its Relation To Feminine Identity And Sexual Inhibition., Ornella. Piccolo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Some psychodynamic authors (Deutsch, 1944; Menninger, 1939; Rheingold, 1964; Thompson, 1964a) and Bardwick (1971), writing on the psychology of women, have proposed that symptoms of the menstrual cycle, such as dysmenorrhea and premenstrual tension, express a disturbed feminine identity, a repudiation of femininity, and sexual inhibition. The scanty and often methodologically inadequate research reported to date has yielded contradictory results. In this study the relationship between menstrual-cycle distress, on the one hand, and feminine identity and sexual inhibition, on the other hand, was investigated among 156 first-year university women. In the first session the subjects wrote stories to pictures eliciting …

A Comparison Of Mentally Retarded Children To Normal Children And Of Disabled Readers To Normal Readers: An Evaluation Of A Similar Sequence Hypothesis And A Deficit Hypothesis., Lois Ann. Dobson Jan 1981

A Comparison Of Mentally Retarded Children To Normal Children And Of Disabled Readers To Normal Readers: An Evaluation Of A Similar Sequence Hypothesis And A Deficit Hypothesis., Lois Ann. Dobson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to evaluate a similar sequence and a deficit hypothesis by comparing mentally retarded children to normal children, and disabled readers to normal readers. A total of 167 male children were compared on 16 dependent measures. Thirty-three normal children (age 7-8) were compared to 23 young mentally retarded children (mean age = 10.7), and 15 old mentally retarded children (mean age = 12.5). Twenty-four normal readers (age 7-8) were compared to four groups of disabled readers (ages 9-10, 10-11, 11-12, and 12-13, each group, n = 24). The normal and mentally retarded children were equated on mental …

The State Of The Bereaved Ego--An Examination Of Conjugal Bereavement In Light Of Bibring's Hypothesized Mechanism Of Depression., Dennis Patrick. Sugrue Jan 1981

The State Of The Bereaved Ego--An Examination Of Conjugal Bereavement In Light Of Bibring's Hypothesized Mechanism Of Depression., Dennis Patrick. Sugrue

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The author proposed that Edward Bibring's egoanalytical hypotheses on the mechanism of depression may serve as a useful model for understanding the dynamics of bereavement. Bibring's position suggests that both bereaved and depressed persons experience a fall in self-esteem in response to the experience of helplessness in achieving narcissistic aspirations. It was predicted that persons who gave evidence of dependency concerns, negative attitudes towards a lost love-object, or an unresolved oedipal conflict would be especially prone to experience a fall in self-esteem. Mfft Reaction Time And Reading Performance Of Elementary School Children., Lucia Marie. Mandziuk Jan 1981

Mfft Reaction Time And Reading Performance Of Elementary School Children., Lucia Marie. Mandziuk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present investigation examined whether children categorized as fast responders on a visual discrimination task, the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT; Kagan, Rosman, Day, Albert, & Phillips, 1964), show significant differences in various aspects of reading performance (i.e., speed, comprehension, accuracy, self-corrections) from children categorized as slow responders. Hypotheses were formulated from the research of Bakker (1973). Twenty male and twenty female children were selected from regular grades two, four, and six if their mean reaction time on the MFFT fell either above or below .5 S.D. of the means contained in the MFFT normative data (Salkind, 1978). Reading performance …

Psychological Androgyny And Attitudes Toward Feminism In Relation To The Perception Of Dominance And Sexuality., Gerald P. Smith Jan 1981

Psychological Androgyny And Attitudes Toward Feminism In Relation To The Perception Of Dominance And Sexuality., Gerald P. Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study contrasted two measures of psychological androgyny, the Bem Sex-Role Inventory and the Personal Attributes Questionnaire, in terms of experimental subjects' bipolar ratings of four gestures (pointing, touching, standing over, and invading another's personal space). This perceptual task partially replicated a study conducted by N. Henley in 1977 dealing with the communication (through nonverbal behavior) of power differences between the sexes. This study examined whether an individual's classification on either androgyny measure was related to the latter's submissiveness-dominance and asexuality-sexuality ratings of photographic slides depicting members of a dyad enacting various combinations of the gestures targeted for study …

The Effects Of Cultural And Individual Supports On Personality Variables Among Children Of Holocaust Survivors In Israel And North America., Morrie M. Kleinplatz Jan 1980

The Effects Of Cultural And Individual Supports On Personality Variables Among Children Of Holocaust Survivors In Israel And North America., Morrie M. Kleinplatz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The recent literature on children of holocaust survivors has focused increasingly on the "normal", well-functioning members of that population. The realization that serious pathology is not an inescapable consequence of growing up in a survivor family has resulted in an interest in determining the circumstances which contribute to a healthy adaptation on the part of the offspring of survivor families. The present study was designed to explore this issue from two points of view: (1) the influence of cultural supports which contribute to healthy functioning; and (2) the influences of individual supports which facilitate healthy adaptations. A group of 16 …

The Effects Of Problem-Solving Ability And Task Difficulty On The Pupil Response During Cognitive Tasks Employing "Continuous" Stimuli., Alex S. Weinberger Jan 1980

The Effects Of Problem-Solving Ability And Task Difficulty On The Pupil Response During Cognitive Tasks Employing "Continuous" Stimuli., Alex S. Weinberger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Numerous investigators employing a variety of tasks have found that the pupil of the eye can serve as an index of cognitive effort or processing. Specifically, it has been demonstrated that during cognitive task the pupil dilates in response to stimulus presentation and returns to baseline immediately following solution or task termination. Moreover the increase in pupil size during information processing periods has been found to be positively related to the difficulty level of the task employed. Thus more difficult tasks evoke larger pupillary dilation during processing periods. The consistency of findings in this area has led reviewers to comment …
