Experimental Study And Theoretical Modelling Of Ultrasonic Wave Propagation In Resistance Spot Welds., Andriy M. Chertov

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The theoretical and experimental study of resistance spot weld quality has a long history. Since the invention of the method manufacturers are concerned about the means of quality assurance of the joints. One of the most promising current techniques of quality inspection is the real time ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation. In such a system the acoustic signals are sent through the spot weld during welding and then analyzed to predict the size of the future joint. In spite of its purely industrial application and seemingly easy setup the problem involves several complicated mechanisms to be described using a physical-mathematical approach. This …

A Correlational Study Of Emotional Intelligence And Aggression In Adolescents., Andrew William. Johnston Jan 2003

A Correlational Study Of Emotional Intelligence And Aggression In Adolescents., Andrew William. Johnston

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between adolescent emotional intelligence and adolescent aggression was investigated. Seventy one 7th and 8th grade students participated in the study. The students ranged in age from 11 to 14 years. All subjects completed the Baron Emotional Quotient Inventory: Youth Version (Baron EQ-i:YV) as a measure of emotional intelligence. They also completed an Aggression Questionnaire (Buss & Perry, 1992, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 63, 452--459). Pearson product-moment correlations were examined indicating an overall significant negative correlation between Emotional Intelligence and Aggression (r = -.693, p < .001). Stepwise multiple regression analysis was used to further investigate relationships between components of Aggression and Emotional Intelligence. Analysis indicated that Stress Management (beta = -.736, p < .001) and Intrapersonal (beta = -.268, p < .001) measures were significant predictors of Physical Aggression. A second stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that Anger (beta = .591, p < .001) and Hostility (beta = .292, p < .05) were also significant predictors of Physical Aggression. A one-way analysis of variance indicated significant gender differences with males scoring higher on Physical Aggression (p < .001) and Total Aggression (p < .01) and females scoring higher on Emotional Intelligence (p < .05). A Heuristic For Wdm Path Protection., Min. Hou Jan 2003

A Heuristic For Wdm Path Protection., Min. Hou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Optical fibers and Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) are being researched as well as commercially deployed as technologies that can satisfy the bandwidth requirements of the Internet today and the foreseeable future. Since optical resources are expensive, we need to develop network design mechanisms, which can achieve an efficient utilization of network resources in a reasonable computational time. In WDM networks, the failure of a single fiber link may cause very large data loss if the traffic is not rerouted quickly. Therefore, the survivability of optical connections has become a very important issue for WDM network design. In this thesis, we …

Ultrasonic Propagation Across A Thin Layer Between Two Bulk Media: Theory, Computer Simulation And Experiment., Jeffrey. Sadler Jan 2003

Ultrasonic Propagation Across A Thin Layer Between Two Bulk Media: Theory, Computer Simulation And Experiment., Jeffrey. Sadler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes the changes in the reflected and transmitted acoustic waves due to the addition of a thin layer (thickness much less than an acoustic wavelength) between two half-spaces of material. The restriction of the thin layer allows one to combine perturbation methods with the standard fully bonded boundary conditions at each interface and derive a set of equations where one no longer is concerned with the acoustic waves internal to the thin layer. This approach allows one to further examine the cases of a nonlinear thin layer, an anisotropic thin layer, and a thin layer with combined anisotropy …

Vision-Guided Multiple Planar Object Recognition And Tracking., Shahed. Shahir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In order to minimize the cost for any improvement or changes in manufacturing products, a flexible manufacturing system is necessary. To do so, robots should be empowered with equipment like vision sensors, which can work as human eyes for robots. A tracking vision sensor consists of a CCD camera, data acquisition, preprocessing, recognition and tracking modules. In this thesis, a design methodology for invariant recognition-based object tracking is proposed, which can potentially be used for implementation of either vision sensors or tracking vision sensors. The performance of Invariant Recognition-based object tracking to a large extent depends on the object recognition …

Walking The Contested Terrain: An Exploration Of The Lifer Identity Post-Release And Its Role In Reintegration., Catherine Lynn. Brooke Jan 2003

Walking The Contested Terrain: An Exploration Of The Lifer Identity Post-Release And Its Role In Reintegration., Catherine Lynn. Brooke

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to explore the identity of life-sentenced inmates ('lifers') after they are released from prison and the impact of identity on reintegration. This research is based on the literature that argues that inmates develop a convict identity while in prison. Few studies, however, follow these convicts after they are released; thus, little is known about the fate of the convict identity. Based on role exit theory and role transition literature, it was expected that lifers would be required to shed their identity as lifers and assume a straight identity for successful reintegration. Seven lifers were …

Chemical, Biochemical, And Cellular Aspects Of S-Nitrosothiols., Shirin. Akhter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nitric oxide is involved in many physiological processes including vascular control, immune responses and neurotransmission under physiological conditions. Many functions of NO are triggered by the formation of its metabolite, S-nitrosothiol. S-nitrosothiols play an important role in the delivery, storage and transport of NO. In addition, they regulate the activity of a variety of proteins and enzymes. The first part of my study is focused on studying the regulatory role of S-nitrosothiol. In this study, S-nitrosothiols including S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) have been demonstrated to regulate the activity of a key protein in plasma, fibrinogen, without chemically modifying it. GSNO and a …

Correctness Of Distributed Systems With Middleware., Hanmei. Cui Jan 2003

Correctness Of Distributed Systems With Middleware., Hanmei. Cui

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Here we present a formal verification technique for the correctness of the design models of the component-based distributed applications where the inter-process communications are realized via general middleware layers. We give a suitable extension of UML statechart diagrams. With this extension, the components and the communications among them in a middleware-based distributed application can be clearly expressed, and the software developers can actually view the middleware as a black box. We assume that the abstract behavior of the distributed application is given in such notations using any UML tool capable of saving the design in the standard XMI format. Two …

Depth Recovery Using A Plenoptic Camera., Mohamed. Amtoun Jan 2003

Depth Recovery Using A Plenoptic Camera., Mohamed. Amtoun

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Depth recovery is a central problem in Computer Vision. Stereopsis is one of the most extensively investigated techniques amidst the approaches addressing it. Though sufficiently accurate, stereopsis is highly dependent on the success of point correspondence, an ill-posed problem that is known to suffer from a number of underlying difficulties. Single-lens stereo systems emerged recently as an effective means to thwart some of the problems of correspondence. The plenoptic camera in particular, has a special image formation geometry that claims to resolve the correspondence ambiguities and simplify depth recovery. However, to our knowledge, prior to this work, no study has …

Design Of Iir Filters With Canonical Signed-Digit (Csd) Coefficients Using Genetic Algorithms., Li. Liang Jan 2003

Design Of Iir Filters With Canonical Signed-Digit (Csd) Coefficients Using Genetic Algorithms., Li. Liang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, an optimization method is used in the design of 1-D IIR digital filters, doubly complementary filter pairs and 2-D IIR digital filters. This method uses genetic algorithm (GA) to minimize the mean square error between the desired and the designed filter responses in order to calculate the coefficients of the filter's transfer function. The 1-D IIR filters are designed using cascade structure, and constraints are imposed on the coefficients of the denominator polynomials to ensure stability. In the one-dimensional case, the method is also used to design doubly complementary filter pairs, in which case two filters that …

A Bloom-Filter Strategy For Response Time Reduction In Distributed Query Processing., Wanxin Gao Jan 2003

A Bloom-Filter Strategy For Response Time Reduction In Distributed Query Processing., Wanxin Gao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In distributed database systems, query optimization is to find strategies attempt to minimize the amount of data transmitted over the network. Optimization algorithms have an important impact on the performance of distributed query processing. Since optimal query processing in distributed database systems has been shown to be NP-Hard [WC96], heuristics are applied to find a cost-effective and efficient (but suboptimal) processing strategy. Many query optimization strategies have been proposed to minimize either the total cost or the response time. The approaches in distributed query processing have mainly focused on the use of joins, semijoins, and filters. In this thesis, we …
