The reactions of Cp$\rm\sb2TiCl\sb2$ with the dithiols, HS(CH$\sb2)\sb{\rm n}$SH (n = 2, 3) in the presence of imidazole proceed with formation of imidazole$\cdot$HCl affording relatively insoluble titanocene dithiolate derivatives 2.1 and 2.2 respectively. Alternatively, 2.2 can be prepared by the reaction of Cp$\rm\sb2TiPh\sb2$ with dithiol. The spectroscopic and analytical data are consistent with the formulation of 2.1 and 2.2 as the bimetallic compounds Cp$\rm\sb2Ti(\mu$-S(CH$\sb2)\sb{\rm n}\rm S)\sb2TiCp\sb2$ (n = 2 2.1, n = 3 2.2). This thesis deals with the design, synthesis and chemistry of four classics potentially binucleatins thioether ligands. Hexadentate macrocycles containing one large central cavity and rigid xylyl groups, as spacing units, comprise the first class of ligand. The coordination chemistry of these ligands with Cu(I), Ag(I) and Pd(II) is presented. The goal of this class of compound is to demonstrate specifically bimetallic coordination to a thioether ligand and subsequent cooperative substrate binding between the centres. The structure of 2,5,8,17,20,23-hexathia- (9.9) -meta-cyclophane, 10, is presented. This work was undertaken to further develop work carried out in this laboratory in recent years on the oxidation of Main Group 3A and 4A elements, and of compounds of these elements in low oxidation states, by focusing on the oxidation of the Main Group 5A and 6A elements phosphorus, tellurium and antimony, and of their low oxidation states compounds. The phosphorus compounds P(O$\rm\sb2C\sb6R)\sb2$Br (R = Cl$\sb4$, Br$\sb4$ or Bu$\rm\sp t\sb2H\sb2$) have been prepared by the reaction of P$\sb4$, Br$\sb2$ and the substituted o-benzoquinone o-O$\sb2$C$\sb6$R.
