A Comparison Of The Effectiveness Of Civilian Conservation Centers And Contract Centers From 1984 To 1988, Robert P. Slaughter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the continuous instability of policy decisions relating to the effectiveness of Civilian Conservation Centers and Contract Centers was a result of measurable differences in performance between the two models. Six hypotheses tested differences between types of centers on six quantitative variables which were: average length of stay, job placement, hourly starting wages, educational gains in reading, math, and General Educational Development (GED). To investigate the problem, 30 Civilian Conservation Centers and 17 comparably sized Contract Centers were selected. Reports from the Department of Labor's Automated Management System provided data for comparison …

Selected demographic variables were also examined. The dimensions of personality investigated were derived from the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator: extroversion, introversion, sensing, intuition, thinking, feeling, judging, and perceiving. The leadership behavior dimensions were the two dimensions of the real and ideal Leadership Behavior Description Questionnaires: consideration and initiating structure. Effectiveness was measured by a 39 item Likert-type instrument based on Tucker's (1981) categorical listing of chairperson …

Preservice Teacher Beliefs Related To Mathematics And Language Arts., David W. Kellenberger Jan 1990

Preservice Teacher Beliefs Related To Mathematics And Language Arts., David W. Kellenberger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study investigated the relationship between preservice teachers' mathematical and language arts learning histories and beliefs about their (1) attribution of students' achievement, (2) self-efficacy as future teachers, and (3) other subject-/topic-related perceptions. The belief most closely linked to the learning history was the self-efficacy as future teachers. The group with a less favourable mathematical learning history and a more favourable language arts learning history believed they were significantly less able to influence students' effort, interest, and achievement in mathematics compared to language arts. In addition, when groups were compared, preservice teachers with a less favourable mathematical learning history believed …

Vocational Bias: Students Entering Nontraditional Careers., Brenda A. Tomini Jan 1990

Vocational Bias: Students Entering Nontraditional Careers., Brenda A. Tomini

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vocational bias can be defined as an implicit assumption that certain careers are more appropriate for one gender than another. Study 1 examined vocational bias from a student's perspective. More specifically, this study addressed the careers to which Canadian undergraduates currently aspire, individuals who influence these choices, students' career confidence, and principally, recent experiences with high school counsellors. In particular, the occupational choices of female students were focused on, especially in the context of previous experience with counsellors. As well, the types of extracurricular activities students participate in were examined. Study 2 examined vocational bias from the perspective of teachers. …

Relationships Among College Students' Self-Related Cognitions And Academic Achievement: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach., Pearl Jean. Szkiba-Day

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined a hypothesized model of the relationships among self-related cognitions and academic achievement in a group of college students. The self-related constructs of interest are: perceptions of academic competence (academic self-concept) defined as evaluations of one's academic competence and degree of importance of achievement-related activities; expectation for future academic performance (expectation) defined as the students' realistic expectation of their grade point average and the degree of commitment to this expectation; perceptions of control over academic outcomes defined as the amount of understanding about the causes of one's successes and failures in school (level of understanding) and the extent …

Sport, Physical Education And The Ideal Girl In Selected Ontario Denominational Schools, 1870-1930., Pauline. Olafson Jan 1990

Sport, Physical Education And The Ideal Girl In Selected Ontario Denominational Schools, 1870-1930., Pauline. Olafson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine how sport and physical activity both helped to create and restrict the "Ideal Girl" at selected Ontario denominational schools between 1870 and 1930. The denominational-boarding school setting was useful for examining the relationship between the sport and physical education of upper-and-middle-class girls and their prescribed role within a patriarchal society as the heads of these schools took great pride in "their girls," and attempted to inculcate values as well as academic and physical achievement. The general conclusions were the same for all dominations: femininity was always an important criterion where girls' sport …

Gender Influences In The Classroom Interaction Of Young Children Using Computers., Cezanne. Nassr-Charlebois

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using videotaped observations collected over one half of an academic year in classes composed of grade one and grade two students, this research examined the cooperative and aggressive interactions of students at the computers. In contrast to previous findings, this research discovered that girls in one class were more physically aggressive than boys, and that there was no association between gender and aggressive interaction at the other. Similarly, there was no association between gender and cooperative interaction at either location. Although some gender related differences have been reported on ask/respond type behavior, this research found that girls and boys asked …

Determination Of The Subtypal Composition Of Several Samples Of Learning-Disabled Children Selected On The Basis Of Wisc Fsiq Iq Level: A Neuropsychological, Multivariate Approach., Gerald T. Mcfadden Jan 1990

Determination Of The Subtypal Composition Of Several Samples Of Learning-Disabled Children Selected On The Basis Of Wisc Fsiq Iq Level: A Neuropsychological, Multivariate Approach., Gerald T. Mcfadden

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

At this point, the research efforts of many investigators of learning disabled children have most often included only those children who could be considered learning disabled after excluding all other possible reasons for their academic difficulties. These studies typically exclude all children who are considered low functioning (i.e., low-IQ), emotionally disturbed, environmentally deprived, brain damaged, and hearing or visually impaired. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the subtypal composition of various samples of learning disabled (LD) children selected on the basis of WISC FSIQ level. The issue of the adequacy of the traditional exclusionary definition of LD …

The Effects Of Self-Esteem Training On Practicing Registered Nurses., Dorothy T. Mcgee Jan 1990

The Effects Of Self-Esteem Training On Practicing Registered Nurses., Dorothy T. Mcgee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nursing staff shortages and the high cost of health care have focused attention on burnout in nurses. High self-esteem is seen as a buffer to prevent burnout and is thought to enhance performance. The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of self-esteem training on practicing registered nurses and to explored the relationship between self-esteem and performance. Concept mapping was used as the teaching strategy. The majority (86%) of the randomly selected sample had both high self-esteem and high quality performance before training. After training 92% had normal healthy levels of self-esteem and performance levels increased significantly. No …

The study examined the impact of social cognitive strategies provided during the program on participants' self-efficacy to choose low fat foods and avoid overeating, behavioural intentions to eat low fat foods, outcome expectations related to healthy life-style practices and social support from friends and family members. The effect of the Be Trim program …

Formal Mentorship Programs: A Means For Retention And Change., Margo. Mcphedran Jan 1990

Formal Mentorship Programs: A Means For Retention And Change., Margo. Mcphedran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reports on the development, the implementation and the evaluation of a formal mentorship program in the Lambton County Board of Education. The program involved a series of in-service sessions for both the mentor and the new teacher. The data showed certain outcomes with the mentored groups. Firstly, the administrators reported a greater level of staff cohesion with the mentored teachers. Secondly, the administrators expressed less need for interactions with the mentored teachers. All areas reflected a shift towards a more positive perception of parental reactions, preservice preparation of the new teacher, stress levels and discipline concerns. In the …

A Study Of The Effects Of Time-Of-Day On Hemispheric Processing In Adults Using Two Dichotic Listening Tasks., Margaret J. Wojtowicz Jan 1990

A Study Of The Effects Of Time-Of-Day On Hemispheric Processing In Adults Using Two Dichotic Listening Tasks., Margaret J. Wojtowicz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sixty-four adults, (32 males and 32 females), were tested on two dichotic listening tasks, consonant-vowels (CVs) and musical melodies, during two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. The study was set up to examine two time-of-day hypotheses: Colquhoun's (1971) hypothesis that performance follows circadian body rhythms and would increase later in the day; and Folkard's (1979) hypothesis that a cognitive shift in processing occurs in the course of the day, such that performance on some tasks would improve while performance on other tasks would deteriorate. Neither Colquhoun's nor Folkard's hypothesis was wholly supported. The only significant …

A Survey Of Race Relations At The University Of Windsor (Ontario)., Roxanne. Baker Jan 1990

A Survey Of Race Relations At The University Of Windsor (Ontario)., Roxanne. Baker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify problems visible minority students were encountering on the University of Windsor campus, and in the community at large. It was argued that the classification of the student (visa or non-visa) would have an impact on whether they encountered unpleasant racial experiences. It was also argued that more racial incidents would occur off campus than on campus. Descriptive statistics revealed that some problems were present on campus and that visible minority students did not have much knowledge about available services on campus. It appears that there has been a lack of communication from …
