The underlying aim of this thesis is to show that small scale NASA aerial photography is a valuable planning tool through which urban planners can extract the accurate land use information necessary to their planning and decision making processes. This aim will be achieved through an examination of the following points: 1. The utility of the aerial photography to urban planners possessing little photo interpretation experience or sophisticated equipment for the extraction of information. 2 The accuracy and suitability of the land use information obtained from the interpretation to the urban planning process. 3. This paper deals with the development of a water quality management strategy for the Big Sioux Basin located in eastern South Dakota. The first step in the development of a strategy is the collection and review of all available literature and data for the basin. From this information a physical description of the basin with regard to location, geology, climate, and hydrology can be made. Also, information on the history, population, economy and development of the basin should be included. Edge Detection And Adjacency Classification In Digital Data Via The Gradient Vector, Michael John Russell

Detection of edges in imagery represented by the matrix of data and classification of the data surrounded by an edge are investigated. An edge detection algorithm is developed and used to locate edges in digitized imagery. An algorithm called the adjacency classifier is developed to classify all groups in adjacent data points that are surrounded by edges. These two algorithms incorporate three important characteristics of the gradient vector: high gradients are inherent at edges, low gradients are inherent at edges, low gradients are inherent within homogeneous objects and gradient vector directions are perpendicular to the edge direction. The Vascular Flora Of Ordway Prairie Mcpherson County, South Dakota, Barry L. Hertz

The vascular vegetation of Ordway Prairie, a preserve maintained by The Nature Conservancy as an example of virgin prairie in McPherson County, South Dakota, was studied to determine its present composition. The sample comprised representatives of each species recognized in each of the 13 square-mile sections within the prairie, collected in 1975 and 1 9 7 6 . Three hundred nine different species, representing 170 genera in 55 plant families were found. One thousand six hundred forty five permanent herbarium specimens, serving as vouchers for their distribution, are now in the herbarium of South Dakota State University .

The present study was undertaken to determine the kinds and numbers of obligate anaerobes possibly present in various frozen and refrigerated commercial convenience foods. Also, known numbers of pathogenic species of obligate anaerobes were added to various convenience foods and stored at refrigeration and freezing temperatures to determine their die-off or loss in viability. The conditions investigated included the effects of different organisms, different foods, different temperatures, and various storage time periods. The results of this investigation demonstrate to food producers as well as consumers that the possibility does exist for the presence of non-sporeforming obligate anaerobes in frozen or …

Yellow leaf spot, caused by Pyrenophora trichostoma (Fr.) Fckl., (Helminthosporium tritici repentis Died.) an ascomycetous fungus of widespread distribution, has played a minor role in the complex of foliar diseases afflicting Triticum species in South Dakota. However, with the introduction of cultural practices that leave large amounts of crop residue in the soil surface, the possibility exists that it may become a serious threat to wheat production in the Northern Great Plains region of the United States. Forest, Miller and Raizen (1963) and Hutcheson and Olson (1967) have conducted two of the only investigations on soil algae in a prairie ecosystem. The present investigation dealt first with identification of genera of algae present in the soil and an evaluation of their numbers. Secondarily a relationship was established between the numbers of algae in the soil (by species) and their environment, by the correlation coefficients. The variation in the environment was then used to predict the occurrence of algae in the soil using stepwise additive multiple regression analysis. The purpose of this study was to determine the number, location, cause, and frequency of occurrence of football injuries that occurred during the1975 season in South Dakota high schools. An assessment of time-loss due to injury and the extent of medical supervision and care was also included. A second problem was to analyze the data and to formulate recommendations for the improvement of injury prevention and treatment programs.

Cloning Of Lilium Longiflorum And Andropogon Gerardii By Tissue Culture Of Leaf And Floral Parts, Nancy E. Stenberg

The Easter lily, L. longiflorum Thunb. Is known not only for its ornamental value, but also for its large chromosomes, making it ideal cytological material. Big bluestem, Andropogon gerardii Vitman, is a South Dakota native grass. It possesses many desirable characteristics and unique adaptations to this region. This research has primarily dealt with the development of methods for cloning the species L. longiflorum and A. gerardii by tissue culture of leaf and/or floral parts. The pattern of plantlet differentiation from the cultures was also histologically studied.
