Changes In Cadmium And Nickle Adsorption Over Time In A Periodically Submerged Soil, Elly Kirsten Triegel

Doctoral Dissertations

The objective of this study was to measure the rate of change of adsorptive properties of soils and sediments after submergence. Soil samples were collected from a cove which is inundated periodically each year. Samples were collected prior to submergence and analyzed for pH, Eh, organic carbon content, readily available iron and manganese oxides, free iron and manganese oxides , surface area, and the amount of cadmium and nickel adsorbed at pH 4 and the pH of the soil.

The amounts of nickel and cadmium adsorption were then investigated separately, in a 0.1 M NaNO3 solution at the two …

A Feminist Theory Of Poetics, Barbara Alice Templeton Dec 1984

A Feminist Theory Of Poetics, Barbara Alice Templeton

Doctoral Dissertations

Many critics have argued that modern poetry is most comprehensively understood as an expansion rather than a rejection of the romantic tradition. Simply stated, their claim is that the romantic lyric, in which the mode of perceiving rather than the perception itself is the central subject of the poem, remains the dominant form in modern and post-modern poetry. In general, contemporary poetry also presents itself as an act of the mind encountering and evaluating the external world. As a poetic movement influenced by feminist thinking, contemporary women's poetry grounds itself in the romantic tradition while deviating from it in ways …

Effects Of Cooking Method, Fat Level, And Days On Feed On The Objective And Sensory Characteristics Of Restructured Steaks, Carol A. Costello Dec 1984

Effects Of Cooking Method, Fat Level, And Days On Feed On The Objective And Sensory Characteristics Of Restructured Steaks, Carol A. Costello

Doctoral Dissertations

Top rounds from steers fed grain 0, 28, 56, or 84 days were removed and flaked in a Urschel Comitrol containing a plate with 1.9-cm openings. Fat (beef plates approximately 55% fat) from animals fed grain was finely ground. Flaked meat and fat were mixed and formed into 227-g restructured steaks with 15%, 20%, or 25% fat. Steaks were cooked in a microwave oven on a preheated browning dish or broiled in a conventional oven to an internal temperature of 73oC ± 2oC or 73oC, respectively.

Greater cooking losses were exhibited for steaks heated …

The Presence Of Don Quixote In Music, Susan Jane Flynn Dec 1984

The Presence Of Don Quixote In Music, Susan Jane Flynn

Doctoral Dissertations

Many musical works have been based upon Don Quixote de la Mancha, by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. Since the publication of the novel in 1605 (Part I) and 1615 (Part II), composers of all eras have sought to translate the story of the knight-errant into the universal language of music. The genres and the musical interpretations have varied. But the interest in Cervantes' masterpiece as a topic of musical expression has endured through nearly four centuries.

After a brief introduction to the references to music in the novel itself, selected Quixote compositions from each century are discussed in this …

Dynamic Behavior Of Boiling Water Reactors, Jose March-Leuba Dec 1984

Dynamic Behavior Of Boiling Water Reactors, Jose March-Leuba

Doctoral Dissertations

A study of the basic processes involved in boiling water nuclear reactor dynamics is presented. The main emphasis of this research has been placed on the physical interpretation of these processes. It is shown that this type of reactors have two regimes of operation: linear, during normal operation, and nonlinear, if they become unstable due to the thermohydraulic feedback. Both of these regimes are studied using low-order physical models.

The main result obtained from the linear study is the pole-zero configuration of the reactivity-to-power transfer function. It is determined that three zeros and four poles are needed to properly represent …

The Occurrence And Cause Of Midsummer Zooplankton Declines: Cyanobacteria And The Implications For Freshwater Ecology, Nicholas K. Brown Dec 1984

The Occurrence And Cause Of Midsummer Zooplankton Declines: Cyanobacteria And The Implications For Freshwater Ecology, Nicholas K. Brown

Doctoral Dissertations

The current paradigm of lacustrine ecology is that zooplankton communities are structured by the nature am intensity of predation upon them. One corollary to this paradigm is that the observed phenomenon of midsummer zooplankton decline is caused by predation. A second is the hypothesis of "biomanipulation." One aspect of "biomanipulation" proposes that in certain circumstances the removal of predators of zooplankton might result in reduced algal biomass. The assumption of both these corollaries is that aquatic food webs are manipulable from the top. 'The data supporting predation-caused midsummer declines and biomanipulation are examined analytically and theoretically by considering biomass, foraging …

Yield And Selected Chemical And Morphological Responses Of Several Soybean Cultivars To Soil Ph, Nuri H. Al-Mohammadi Dec 1984

Yield And Selected Chemical And Morphological Responses Of Several Soybean Cultivars To Soil Ph, Nuri H. Al-Mohammadi

Doctoral Dissertations

Yield responses of soybeans to soil pH have been difficult to demonstrate on most soils in Tennessee. Yet, liming has consistently been recommended as a practice to maintain productive soils near neutral. A study was conducted with 21 soybean cultivars on a productive West Tennessee soil to evaluate several chemical and morphological characteristics of these cultivars and determine which of the characteristics had any impact on yield.

Twenty-one soybean cultivars belonging to three maturity groups (IV, V, and VI) were planted in three soil pH levels of 5.3, 5.9, and 6.8 in a split-plot arrangement of treatments in a randomized …

Interference And Postemergence Control Of Annual Grasses In Burley And Dark Fire-Cured Tobaccos, Gary K. Palmer

Doctoral Dissertations

Interference studies with annual grasses were conducted in 1982 and 1983 in burley and dark fire-cured tobaccos (Nicotiana tabacum L.) at Greeneville and Springfield, Tennessee, respectively. Treatments consisted of annual grass-free periods of 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks from transplanting and 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks of interference followed by removal of all weeds and maintenance of weed-free conditions. A season long annual grass-free treatment and a season long annual grass-infested treatment served as controls. Annual grass-free periods were established and maintained by hand-hoeing. In 1982, the critical annual grass-free period and critical duration …

The Effects Of Pre- And Post-Transit Potassium Levels, Feedlot Receiving Diets, And Levamisole Injection On Stressed Bull And Steer Calves, Frank K. Brazle Dec 1984

The Effects Of Pre- And Post-Transit Potassium Levels, Feedlot Receiving Diets, And Levamisole Injection On Stressed Bull And Steer Calves, Frank K. Brazle

Doctoral Dissertations

In a March 1983 trial, 125 bulls and 139 steer calves were used to compare bulls castrated at feedlot (FL) arrival (BULLS) with steers, to evaluate feeding supplemental potassium (K) at the order-buyer barn (OBB) for three days before shipment or at FL, to compare a 40% concentrate (CONG) receiving diet with a hay (HAY) diet, and to evaluate the effect of injection with levamisole (LEV) at OBB and FL arrival. Mortality was higher (P<.05) in BULLS (13.2%) than in steers (7.7%) and higher in CONG bulls than in HAY bulls.

Steers gained more (P<.10) (12.1 kg) from purchase to FL-28, had higher (P<.10) antibody titers for Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) at OBB, and greater (P<.10) change in serum lymphocyte blastogenesis from OBB to FL-28 than BULLS. Calves fed a 1.5% K diet at OBB had less shrink during the 24-hour transit than those fed a 1.1% K diet. FL gains of calves fed a 1.1% K and a 1.7% K receiving diet were similar (P>.10).

Calf breed type affected mortality. Mortality of white-faced, feather-necked, red, medium-frame calves (WF) (18.3%) was higher (P<.10) than that of black, medium-frame calves (BL) (2.8%). WF calves required 30% more clinical treatments and had higher temperatures than did BL and large-frame calves. Injection of LEV at OBB or FL reduced mortality 6.6% and increased BVD and IBR antibody titers. Gains during the 28-day receiving period were similar for the GONG and HAY calves but the GONG calves gained more (P<.05) during the subsequent silage period. Mortality tended to be higher in CONC calves (12.3%) than in HAY calves (8.5%).

Effects Of Carnitine On Ethanol-Induced Hepatic Steatosis, Tae Hyong Rhew Aug 1984

Effects Of Carnitine On Ethanol-Induced Hepatic Steatosis, Tae Hyong Rhew

Doctoral Dissertations

The lipotropic and hypolipidemic effects of carnitine and its precursors, namely lysine (Lys) and methionine (Met), was examined in male Sprague-Dawley rats fed ethanol as 36% of the total calories for a duration of 56 days (Experiment I). Ethanol produced significant hepatic steatosis and hypertriglyceridemia as evidenced from elevated concentrations of total lipids, triglycerides, cholesterols, and phospholipids. Supplementation of the ethanol diet with 1.0% D,L-carnitine and 0.5% L-Lys plus 0.2% L-Met significantly reduced ethanol-induced elevation of the various lipid classes with the exception of free fatty acids. The triglyceride contents in liver and plasma were inversely related to the concentrations …

Aspects Of The Genetics Of Bovine Blood Systems : Linkage, Heterosis, Gene Frequency And Association With Production Traits, Johnny E. Copeland Aug 1984

Aspects Of The Genetics Of Bovine Blood Systems : Linkage, Heterosis, Gene Frequency And Association With Production Traits, Johnny E. Copeland

Doctoral Dissertations

Data from two separate beef cattle herds, the University of Tennessee (UT) Plateau Experiment Station Angus herd and the Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) and State University herd at Front Royal, Virginia, containing Angus, Shorthorns, and Herefords, were utilized to investigate some of the genetic aspects of bovine blood systems. Analyses for linkage revealed that genes responsible for blood groups are not located on the sex chromosome. Attempts to find linkage between genes responsible for the F-V and R'-S' blood systems proved inconclusive. Studies of heterozygosity in the UT Angus herd using combinations of double homozygotes and heterozygotes between the F-V …

Unobtrusive Observations Of Cigarette Smoking, Robert Fisher Jun 1984

Unobtrusive Observations Of Cigarette Smoking, Robert Fisher

Doctoral Dissertations

The results of laboratory studies of cigarette smoking are of questionable value if the experimental smoking patterns are not like those of "real world" smoking. For instance, the amount of tar, nicotine and hazardous gases collected by a smoking machine may not reflect the amount smokers are actually exposed to unless the machine is programmed to smoke as do people in ordinary, day-to-day situations. Whether or not this is the case for any given laboratory study is not readily apparent due to a shortage of information on naturally occurring smoking patterns. As a step to remedy this problem, a naturalistic …

Ninety U.S. No. 1, 90 U.S. No. 2 and 60 U.S. No. 3 pigs were purchased in each trial. The No. 1 and No. 2 grades were divided into three body types: type 3–longer, taller pigs; type 2–average for the grade; and type 1–shorter, compact pigs. The U.S. No. 3 grade pigs were divided only into the type 2 and type 1 categories.

The addition of 10% oats to the basal diet increased (P<.05) average daily gain of pigs after 7 days while additions of 10% alfalfa meal resulted in more feed (P<.05) consumed per pound of gain after 21 days on experiment.

The addition of …

Turbot Fillet Sections Cooked By Microwave And Conventional Heating Methods: Objective And Sensory Evaluation, Karen Madeira Mar 1984

Turbot Fillet Sections Cooked By Microwave And Conventional Heating Methods: Objective And Sensory Evaluation, Karen Madeira

Doctoral Dissertations

Energy and time conservation in food preparation is of concern to consumers and the microwave oven is one appliance that has been credited with energy and time savings. Although consumption of fish by consumers has been increasing, little has been reported on the microwave-cooking of fish. Therefore, an investigation was designed to compare the energy requirements of, the effects of heating on, and the acceptability of turbot, an underutilized species of fish, cooked in a microwave oven with that baked conventionally.

The microwave oven cooked the fish significantly faster, required less cooking power and energy, and demonstrated greater relative efficiency …

American Indian And Euro-American Impact Upon Holocene Vegetation In The Lower Little Tennessee River Valley, East Tennessee, Patricia A. Cridlebaugh Mar 1984

American Indian And Euro-American Impact Upon Holocene Vegetation In The Lower Little Tennessee River Valley, East Tennessee, Patricia A. Cridlebaugh

Doctoral Dissertations

Paleoethnobotanical remains recovered from Early Archaic through Historic Overhill Cherokee period archaeological sites in the lower Little Tennessee River Valley in Tennessee document prehistoric people's plant-exploitation patterns. This material provides the basis for establishing a model of prehistoric landscape change. Plant species represented by wood charcoal were assigned to bottomland, upland, and disturbed-upland habitats. Indian exploitation of upland favored species remained consistent through time. A progressively deforested landscape is indicated by diminished exploitation of bottomland-favored plant species in contrast to simultaneous increases in Indian utilization of disturbance-favored early successional taxa such as pine (Pinus spp.), cedar (Juniperus virginiana …

Pentecostal Healing: A Facet Of The Personalistic Health System Of Pakal-Na, A Village In Southern Mexico, Murl Owen Dirksen Mar 1984

Pentecostal Healing: A Facet Of The Personalistic Health System Of Pakal-Na, A Village In Southern Mexico, Murl Owen Dirksen

Doctoral Dissertations

This research investigates the degree to which Pentecostals in Pakal-Na, Chiapas, Mexico, employ personalistic rather than naturalistic disease theory (Foster, 1976) in selecting curing methods, and it compares Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal employment of health resources. In naturalistic disease theory, illness results from impersonal, natural forces (i.e., cold, heat, wind and dampness) which cause an imbalance in natural body states. In personalistic disease theory, illness is caused by supernatural forces. Because of differences in believed sources of illness, these two theories of disease predispose individuals to select different therapies and curers.

For this study, personalistic/naturalistic categories were viewed as a continuum, …

A Comparison Of Alternative Price Forecasting Models For Slaughter Hogs, William Noel Blisard Mar 1984

A Comparison Of Alternative Price Forecasting Models For Slaughter Hogs, William Noel Blisard

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a price forecasting model capable of accurately predicting the price of slaughter hogs one quarter in advance. Both time series and econometric models were hypothesized, estimated, and tested. In an attempt to improve fore casting accuracy, composite models were developed which utilized the price forecasts from both time series and econometric models as inputs. Two types of time series models were estimated. The simplest was an ARIMA model, which assumes current price is related to past price plus a random error term. Also estimated was a transfer function which is similar to …
