The Juggling Act Female Administrators Perform Between Their Professional And Nonprofessional Lives, Betsy Taylor Roesch
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine how full-time female college administrators juggle the responsibilities in their professional lives with those of their nonprofessional lives.;A total of thirty female administrators were selected from both private and public four-year institutions in eastern Virginia. Snowball sampling was used to identify the women who met the criteria of the study. The women were all full-time college administrators who had at least one child still living at home and at least one living parent. They were all members of the "sandwich generation". One-third of the women were African American.;Information on each woman was …

The Role Of Microbial Food Webs In Benthic-Pelagic Coupling In Freshwater And Marine Ecosystems, Adele J. Pile
The Role Of Microbial Food Webs In Benthic-Pelagic Coupling In Freshwater And Marine Ecosystems, Adele J. Pile
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
A majority of carbon in freshwater and marine ecosystems is in the form of ultraplankton, heterotrophic and autotrophic plankton &<&5 &\mu&m including heterotrophic bacteria, Prochlorococcus, cyanobacteria, and autotrophic eucaryotes. However, ultraplankton and subsequently microbial food webs have yet to be incorporated into models of benthic-pelagic coupling despite the preponderance of macroinvertebrates with the capacity to feed on ultraplankton. I have examined the role of microbial food webs in benthic-pelagic coupling in three ecosystems: Lake Baikal, Siberia, Russia; Gulf of Maine, Northwest Atlantic Ocean; and Conch Reef, Florida Keys, USA. Using sponges as a model organism and in situ measurements, I have quantified (1) suspension feeding on ultraplankton and (2) release of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and phosphorus (DIP) resulting in direct evidence that benthic macroinvertebrates do occupy the level of primary consumer within the microbial food web. Dual-beam flow cytometry was employed to quantified sponge suspension feeding on five types of ultraplankton: heterotrophic bacteria, Synechococcus-type cyanobacteria, autotrophic picoplankton &<&3 &\mu&m, autotrophic eucaryotes 3-10 &\mu&m, and in marine ecosystems Prochlorococcus. Grazing by the freshwater sponges Baikalospongia intermedia and B. bacilliferia and the boreal marine sponge, Mycale lingua, was unselective for all types of ultraplankton with efficiencies ranging from 63-99%. This is the first time that grazing on Synechococcus-type cyanobacteria and Prochlorococcus by macroinvertebrates has been quantified in freshwater and marine ecosystems. Conversely, the coral reef sponges Ircinia felix and I. strobilina release significant amounts of DIN and DIP as a result of grazing on procaryotic plankton. Using a general model for organism-mediated fluxes, it is conservatively estimated that through active suspension feeding sponges in Lake Baikal retain 1.97 g C day&\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}& m&\sp{lcub}-2{rcub}& and M. lingua retains 29 mg C day&\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}& m&\sp{lcub}-2{rcub}& while at Conch Reef sponges released 204 &\mu&mol DIN day&\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}& m&\sp{lcub}-2{rcub}& and 48 &\mu&mol DIP day&\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}& m&\sp{lcub}-2{rcub}&. A majority of the carbon retained at all three locations was from procaryotic cell types suggesting that ultraplankton are an important overlooked component of benthic-pelagic coupling.

A Study Of The Effect Of Interactive Language In The Stimulation Of Cognitive Functioning For Students With Learning Disabilities, Kathleen Ricards Hopkins
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Much can be gained by applying knowledge and insight gleaned from the field of neuropsychology to the field of education. Diagnosis and treatment of learning disabilities (LD) could be enhanced through an increased understanding of neurolinguistic functioning. The present study examined the effect of five instructional techniques aimed at stimulating the cognitive functioning of students with diagnosed learning disabilities. The defining characteristic of each of the five techniques is the use of interactive dialogue to stimulate oral language production leading to greater cognitive efficiency. Evidence is presented for the need for interhemispheric collaboration in complex linguistic tasks such as reading, …

Reproductive Biology Of Spanish Mackerel, Scomberomorus Maculatus, In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Cynthia L. Cooksey
Reproductive Biology Of Spanish Mackerel, Scomberomorus Maculatus, In The Lower Chesapeake Bay, Cynthia L. Cooksey
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Spanish mackerel were purchased from commercial fisheries in the Chesapeake Bay in the period 1993-1994 and processed for biological data to describe reproductive biology. Spanish mackerel are multiple spawners with asynchronous oocyte development and indeterminate fecundity. They spawn in the Chesapeake Bay area from June through August, June being the peak spawning month. Individuals, however, vary greatly in when they begin and end spawning. The presence of Gravid and Running Ripe females indicates spawning inside the Chesapeake Bay, and the capture of small juveniles suggests the region may be used as a nursery grounds. Sex ratios vary greatly, females generally …

The Comparison Of Student Engagement Rates During Classroom Discourse, Cooperative Learning, And Lecture Methods Of Instruction In Secondary Schools, Wendy Meadors Geiger
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine the degree to which cooperative learning affects the active participation or engagement of students in the classroom. Previous research has found that students were more engaged during lecture and classroom discourse methods of instruction (anderson & Scott, 1978). This study attempted to determine whether the instructional strategy of cooperative learning affected this result.;The sample for this study was selected from the students of two English and two social studies teachers for each instructional method (cooperative learning, lecture, and classroom discourse). Videotapes were made of each teacher's class for analysis. Each class had …
Transport In Chaotic Systems, Xian Zhu Tang
Transport In Chaotic Systems, Xian Zhu Tang
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
This dissertation addresses the general problem of transport in chaotic systems. Typical fluid problem of the kind is the advection and diffusion of a passive scalar. The magnetic field evolution in a chaotic conducting media is an example of the chaotic transport of a vector field. In kinetic theory, the collisional relaxation of a distribution function in phase space is also an advection-diffusion problem, but in a higher dimensional space.;In a chaotic flow neighboring points tend to separate exponentially in time, exp({dollar}\omega t{dollar}) with {dollar}\omega{dollar} the Liapunov exponent. The characteristic parameter for the transport of a scalar in a chaotic …

Labor At Home: The Domestic World Of Workers At The Du Pont Powder Mills, 1802-1902, Margaret M. Mulrooney
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
While the history of the du Pont family and Du Pont Company have been well-documented, little is known about the everyday lives of the Irish Catholic immigrants who lived and worked at the home plant near Wilmington, Delaware. to correct this oversight, "Labor at Home" explores every aspect of the powder workers' domestic world--from religious beliefs, family structure, gender relations, and ethnic ties, to houses, furnishings, and yards--and uses this data to support new conclusions about cultural identity and class affiliation. as early as the 1820s, for example, powder mill families began to convey their increasing affiliation with bourgeois American …

A Grammar-Based Technique For Genetic Search And Optimization, Clayton Matthew Johnson
A Grammar-Based Technique For Genetic Search And Optimization, Clayton Matthew Johnson
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The genetic algorithm (GA) is a robust search technique which has been theoretically and empirically proven to provide efficient search for a variety of problems. Due largely to the semantic and expressive limitations of adopting a bitstring representation, however, the traditional GA has not found wide acceptance in the Artificial Intelligence community. In addition, binary chromosones can unevenly weight genetic search, reduce the effectiveness of recombination operators, make it difficult to solve problems whose solution schemata are of high order and defining length, and hinder new schema discovery in cases where chromosome-wide changes are required.;The research presented in this dissertation …

Faculty Moonlighting: An Exploratory Study Of The Motivation For Seeking Outside Employment And Its Relationship To The Effectiveness Of Community College Faculty, Joanna Davis Hanks
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Full-time community college faculty moonlight to a much greater extent than does the general workforce. The number of faculty who work second jobs outside of their full-time teaching contract can be projected to exceed 40 percent with a strong possibility that more than half have employment outside of their primary faculty jobs. Chief community college administrators do not believe--or are not willing to admit--that their full-time faculty are so engaged in outside employment.;When faced with years of the same teaching assignments, heavy teaching and advising workloads but limited opportunities and resources for professional growth and renewal, veteran community college faculty …
