The Sexual Media: The Role Of Individual Differences, Anthony Francis Bogaert Jan 1993

The Sexual Media: The Role Of Individual Differences, Anthony Francis Bogaert

Digitized Theses

In two studies, an individual difference approach to understanding sexual media effects was pursued. In Study I, personality (e.g., intelligence, aggression) and individual difference (e.g., prior sexual experience) factors were assessed in a sample of undergraduate males. These males also indicated their preference for various forms of sexual media, including sexual stimuli with aggressive and nonaggressive content. As expected, individual differences were predictive of preferences for different sexual stimuli, with, for example, males lower in intelligence and higher in aggression preferring aggressive sexual stimuli. In Study II, similar personality constructs and individual differences, together with salivary testosterone (T), were assessed …

Mean Likelihood Estimation And Time Series Analysis, Joseph Gilles Quenneville Jan 1993

Mean Likelihood Estimation And Time Series Analysis, Joseph Gilles Quenneville

Digitized Theses

In this thesis, I develop mean likelihood estimation (MeLE) and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) for the parameters of a fractionally differenced autoregressive moving average (FARMA) model and its integrated form (IFARMA).;In chapter 1, I study the sampling distribution theory of MeLE by embedding the estimation problem into a Bayesian model.;In chapter 2, I apply MeLE and MLE to the estimation of the moving average parameter of a MA(1) model. The main result is that the MeLE has a smaller mean square error than the MLE when the moving average parameter is sufficiently inside the parameter space. I also demonstrate that …

The Response Of An Hyperpure Germanium Detector To Ionizing Radiation, Shao Ying Tong Jan 1993

The Response Of An Hyperpure Germanium Detector To Ionizing Radiation, Shao Ying Tong

Such devices may also be used to explore the energy deposition process in semiconductors.;The detailed response of an HPGe detector ({dollar}\sim{dollar}1 cm{dollar}\sp3{dollar} hyperpure Ge with an ion-implanted front contact) to ionizing radiation has been studied with regard to the radiation ionization energy ratio, {dollar}\varepsilon\sb{lcub}\rm ion{rcub}{dollar}/{dollar}\varepsilon\sb0{dollar}, using radioactive {dollar}\alpha{dollar} and {dollar}\gamma{dollar} sources and accelerated ion beams ({dollar}\sp1{dollar}H, {dollar}\sp{lcub}3,4{rcub}{dollar}He, {dollar}\sp7{dollar}Li). The data span the energy range of a few hundred keV to a few MeV. Effects of temperature and bias …

Electrical Strengthening Of Clays By Dielectrophoresis, (Julie) Qiulin Shang Jan 1993

Electrical Strengthening Of Clays By Dielectrophoresis, (Julie) Qiulin Shang

Digitized Theses

Dielectrophoresis, the action of a strong, non-uniform electric field on particles, is potentially a new technique for soil improvement. The principles and technical implementation of dielectrophoretic strengthening of natural clays were investigated in this study. The research included two aspects: the theory of dielectrophoresis in clay-water-electrolyte systems and the experiments of dielectrophoretic treatment on natural clays.;The dielectrophoretic force imposed on a clay-water-electrolyte system is determined by the configuration of the non-uniform electric field and the effective polarizability. The direction of the dielectrophoretic force is governed by the effective polarizability that is in turn controlled by the permittivity and conductivity of …

Flow In Tubes Of Non-Circular Cross-Sections, Raushan Ara Quadir Jan 1993

Flow In Tubes Of Non-Circular Cross-Sections, Raushan Ara Quadir

Digitized Theses

In this thesis steady, laminar, viscous, incompressible flow in tubes of non-circular cross sections is investigated. The specific aims of the investigation are (a) to look at the problems of both developing flow and fully developed flow, (b) to consider non-circular cross sections in a more systematic manner than has been done in the past, and (c) to develop a relatively simple finite element technique for producing accurate numerical solutions of flow in tubes of fairly arbitrary cross sections.;Fully developed flow in tubes is governed by a Poisson type equation for the mainstream velocity. Both analytical and numerical solutions are …

Fabrication Of Indium Phosphide Misfet, Raymund Wai-Man Kwok Jan 1993

Fabrication Of Indium Phosphide Misfet, Raymund Wai-Man Kwok

Digitized Theses

The presence of excessive energy states in the bandgap of III-V semiconductor surfaces is commonly found and has considerably hindered the development of III-V semiconductor technology. Although InP metal-insulator-semiconductor field effect transistors (MISFETs) are attractive switching and driving elements for the InP-based optoelectronic devices which have been widely used for communication applications, interface states of the dielectric/InP structure are known to cause surface Fermi level pinning and drain current drifting, a fact which causes the MISFETs to be unacceptable for any practical usage. In this study, we used a wide range of surface and interface analytical techniques to investigate a …

Response Statistics Of Shell Structures With Geometrical And Material Nonlinearities, Meilan Liu Jan 1993

Response Statistics Of Shell Structures With Geometrical And Material Nonlinearities, Meilan Liu

Digitized Theses

The investigation in this thesis is concerned with response statistics of shell structures with geometrical and material nonlinearities under stationary and non-stationary Gaussian random excitations.;A series of hybrid strain based three node flat triangular shell elements is developed for linear and nonlinear shell structural analyses. In the former the Hellinger-Reissner variational principle is employed. The elements are obtained by combining a triangular bending element and a plane stress element, and incorporating the drilling degrees-of-freedom. For the nonlinear analysis the updated Lagrangian formulation and the incremental Hellinger-Reissner variational principle are applied, with incremental displacements and strains being the independently assumed fields. …

Multiple Maltreatment, Attribution Of Blame, And Adjustment Among Adolescents, Robin A. Mcgee Jan 1993

Multiple Maltreatment, Attribution Of Blame, And Adjustment Among Adolescents, Robin A. Mcgee

Digitized Theses

The present study had two purposes. First, it examined the combined and unique contribution of five maltreatment types to variance in adolescent adjustment (i.e., physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, neglect and exposure to family violence). In accordance with contemporary social learning theory (social cognitive theory), it was hypothesized that aggressive forms of maltreatment would predict externalizing problems, particularly for boys, whereas nonaggressive maltreatment would predict internalizing problems. Second, the study examined the predictive utility of blame attributions for maltreatment. Integrating the writings of several theorists regarding blame attribution, it was predicted that self-blame would mediate or moderate internalizing problems, …

A Role For Metallothionein In Human Monocytes, Martha E. Leibbrandt Jan 1993

A Role For Metallothionein In Human Monocytes, Martha E. Leibbrandt

Digitized Theses

The metal-binding protein metallothionein (MT) confers resistance to the toxic effects of metals. A role in metal homeostasis and protection against toxic free radicals has been suggested, but no physiological function has been established. The ability of human monocytes to be activated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) provided a model to investigate the effect of zinc on both cellular activation ({dollar}\rm H\sb2O\sb2{dollar} production, indicating the respiratory burst) and MT expression. In freshly-isolated primary human monocytes and a human monocytic cell line (THP-1), LPS induced activation and MT expression: LPS did not induce MT expression in human melanoma cells. Co-treatment of THP-1 cells …

Unsteady Rotational Shear Flow Of Power Law Fluids, Jean-Paul Pascal Jan 1993

Unsteady Rotational Shear Flow Of Power Law Fluids, Jean-Paul Pascal

Digitized Theses

In this thesis we have investigated unsteady circular Couette flow for Non-Newtonian fluids of power law behaviour. We considered two specific problems: (1) A solid cylinder rotating in a power law fluid of infinite extent and (2) A power law fluid filling the gap between two concentric rotating cylinders.;Due to the nonlinearity of Non-Newtonian constitutive equations, velocity disturbances from a rotating cylinder propagate through the fluid with finite speed. The existence of this moving velocity disturbance front was observed in the analytic similarity solutions and numerical solutions. For the problem with one cylinder two numerical methods were used to determine …

Hsp 72 In Rat Skeletal Muscle: Fibre Type Differences And Effect Of Exercise, Marius Locke Jan 1993

Hsp 72 In Rat Skeletal Muscle: Fibre Type Differences And Effect Of Exercise, Marius Locke

Digitized Theses

Western blot analyses of SDS-PAGE separated proteins from various hindlimb muscles from non-exercised control animals probed with an HSP 72 monoclonal antibody, demonstrated the constitutive expression of HSP 72 in rat muscles comprised primarily of Type I muscle fibres (soleus), but not in muscles comprised primarily of Type IIB/X fibres (white gastrocnemius-WG). In muscles of mixed fibre type, (plantaris and red gastrocnemius-RG) HSP 72 content was proportional to the percentage of Type I fibres.;Immunolocalization of HSP 72 in cross-sections from the soleus muscle demonstrated that both Type I and Type IIA fibres expressed HSP 72, but Type I fibres expressed …

Can A Local Government Ensure That Development Within Its Conurbation Area Is Financially Beneficial To Its Ratepayer?, Gabriel P. Dekel Jan 1993

Can A Local Government Ensure That Development Within Its Conurbation Area Is Financially Beneficial To Its Ratepayer?, Gabriel P. Dekel

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to show that unchecked local development policies do not necessarily secure financial benefits to the local ratepayer and that they can pose a threat to the long-term well-being of communities. Yet local policy-makers are often unaware of this or unwilling to accept it. The theoretical review tries to explain the divorce between policy analysis and political behaviour. It shows how local government is constrained by political structures and processes which often result in an indiscriminate and costly approach to development policies as well as a deficient practice of fiscal impact analysis. An empirical study …

Outsourcing Core Skills Into Non-Equity Alliance Networks, Kerry Mclellan Jan 1993

Outsourcing Core Skills Into Non-Equity Alliance Networks, Kerry Mclellan

Digitized Theses

Firms are outsourcing functions previously considered core competitive competencies. For example, many U.S. banks have contracted out their Information Technology (IT) functions. These relationships have taken the form of non-equity alliances. The thesis investigated: Why would firms outsource a core skill? Was this a sound strategic decision or one primarily motivated by immediate economic gain? Does this decision lead to the creation of sustainable competitive advantage and greater economic rents, or does it ultimately signal a surrendering of strategic sovereignty? In essence, does the accepted theory of competitive behaviour in bi-lateral market relationships apply to these non-equity alliances and the …

Comparative Studies Of The Effects Of Menogaril And Adriamycin On Cell Morphology And Membrane Function Of Parental And Multidrug Resistant Cells, Stewart E. Daly Jan 1993

Comparative Studies Of The Effects Of Menogaril And Adriamycin On Cell Morphology And Membrane Function Of Parental And Multidrug Resistant Cells, Stewart E. Daly

Digitized Theses

This project was initiated to obtain a better understanding of the cellular mode of action of the anthracycline drug menogaril. Comparative experiments demonstrated that menogaril was as cytotoxic as adriamycin against parental AUX B1 Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO), however, multidrug resistant (MDR) CH{dollar}\sp{lcub}\rm R{rcub}{dollar}C5 CHO cells, which are characterized by the overexpression of P-glycoprotein relative to the parental cells, were less resistant to menogaril. When parental and MDR cells were exposed to equitoxic concentrations of both drugs, menogaril accumulated to a higher level, however, both drugs accumulated to a significantly higher level in the MDR cells. Immediately after exposure …

Host And Viral Determinants Influencing The Pathogenesis Of Coronavirus-Induced Neurological Disease In Rodents, John M. Pasick Jan 1993

Host And Viral Determinants Influencing The Pathogenesis Of Coronavirus-Induced Neurological Disease In Rodents, John M. Pasick

Digitized Theses

Host and viral determinants influencing the outcome of coronavirus JHM infections of the CNS of rodents were investigated using intact animals and primary neural cell cultures. Two problems pertinent to the process of pathogenesis were addressed. The first was concerned with elucidating host factors responsible for controlling the age dependent nature for induction of the demyelinating form of disease in suckling rats. In the second, the basis of the relative resistance exhibited by inbred SJL/J mice to JHMV was examined in relation to both host and viral determinants.;Using primary, dissociated neural cultures from perinatal rats, several interesting aspects of host …

Ph Optimization Of Nucleophilic Reactions And Mechanisms Of Reactions Of Sulfonyl Chlorides, Joe Ying Lam Jan 1993

Ph Optimization Of Nucleophilic Reactions And Mechanisms Of Reactions Of Sulfonyl Chlorides, Joe Ying Lam

Digitized Theses

This thesis consists of four chapters all involving the chemistry of sulfonyl chlorides in water.;Chapter 1 describes the mechanisms of the reactions of alkanesulfonyl chlorides with water with and without added nucleophiles. Evidence is provided that the hydrolysis of alkanesulfonyl chlorides proceeds (a) at low pH, by S{dollar}\sb{lcub}\rm N{rcub}{dollar}2-S attack of water, (b) at intermediate pH, by rate determining attack of hydroxide anion to form sulfene which is then trapped by water, and (c) at high pH, by way of sulfene both formed and trapped by hydroxide anion. Among the following pathways observed in the reaction of alkanesulfonyl chlorides with …

Community Change And Residents' Perceptions Of Industrial Driven Impacts On A Small Town: A Study In Methodology, Catherine Ann Hooey Jan 1993

Community Change And Residents' Perceptions Of Industrial Driven Impacts On A Small Town: A Study In Methodology, Catherine Ann Hooey

Digitized Theses

This dissertation examines the perceptions of the effects of community change by residents in a small town. Industries are more frequently locating in smaller communities. The research presented here explores how residents of a small town perceive the effects of selected types of change, including the introduction of a large industry, on their community and their personal lives. A set of methodologies is assessed with regards to its utility in this type of investigation. The role of group membership, social interaction, personal characteristics and the location of an enumeration area (a grouping of households) relative to an event are measured …

Visual Interactive Linear Programming: The Concept, An Example And An Empirical Assessment Of Its Value In Supporting Managerial Decision-Making, Arshad Ahmad Taseen Jan 1993

Visual Interactive Linear Programming: The Concept, An Example And An Empirical Assessment Of Its Value In Supporting Managerial Decision-Making, Arshad Ahmad Taseen

Digitized Theses

Decision support systems (DSS) and visual interactive (VI) modelling emerged during the 1970s at roughly the same time (Sprague and Watson, 1989), (Belton, 1991). Both ideas seem to have been driven more by advances in computer technology and increasing management demands than any theory. There are both similarities and differences between them. DSS often use some visual and interactive features (see Turban and Carlson, 1989), but seldom refer to them in terms of a VI model. On the other hand, a VI model is almost always built to support decision-making, and is often referred to as a DSS. Both have …

Fertility And Economic Growth, Jie Zhang Jan 1993

Fertility And Economic Growth, Jie Zhang

Digitized Theses

The thesis comprises three chapters which model fertility and economic growth simultaneously in overlapping generations frameworks.;Chapter 1 focuses on the relation between fertility and wage rates and examines the effects on fertility and growth of subsidies for education and for the cost of rearing children by assuming that agents care about the consumption and number of children. Without education, this model reconciles two conflicting results about the relationship between fertility and wage rates: while Malthus and others predict a positive relation, Barro and Becker find a negative relation. With education, the positive relation between fertility and wage rates can no …

What Is Normal Among The A-Type Stars?, Grant Michael Hill Jan 1993

What Is Normal Among The A-Type Stars?, Grant Michael Hill

Digitized Theses

Abundances of 15 elements have been determined for 16 early A-type stars, 14 of which are classified as normal. Abundances have been determined for Sirius, a hot Am star, and {dollar}\lambda{dollar} Boo, the prototypical member of its class. These stars range in vsini from 6 to 114 km s{dollar}\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}.{dollar} Spectrum synthesis has been used to determine the abundances. It is shown to be reliable and capable of application to even broader lined stars. Despite the fact that most of the stars studied are classified as normal, they exhibit a considerable range of abundances. The abundances of most elements scale (at …

N-Aralkylated Derivatives Of 1-Aminobenzotriazole: Isozyme-Selective Mechanism-Based Inhibitors Of Guinea Pig Cytochrome P-450, Kimberley Janine Woodcroft

Digitized Theses

1-Aminobenzotriazole (ABT) and its N-benzyl (BBT), N-{dollar}\alpha{dollar}-methylbenzyl ({dollar}\alpha{dollar}MB), and N-{dollar}\alpha{dollar}-ethylbenzyl ({dollar}\alpha{dollar}EB) derivatives were compared for their potency and isozyme-selectivity for mechanism-based inactivation of guinea pig hepatic and pulmonary cytochrome P450 (P450) in vitro, through the use of isozyme selective substrates for the guinea pig orthologs of rabbit P450 2B4, 1A1, and 4B1 (P450 2Bx, 1A1, 4Bx, respectively). {dollar}\alpha{dollar}MB, {dollar}\alpha{dollar}EB, and to a lesser extent, BBT, selectively inactivated P450 2Bx in pulmonary microsomes from untreated or {dollar}\beta{dollar}-naphthoflavone ({dollar}\beta{dollar}NF)-induced, and hepatic microsomes from phenobarbital (PB)-induced, guinea pigs. P450 loss caused by ABT paralleled the inhibition of enzyme activity in hepatic and pulmonary …

Mobile Robot Perception In Unknown And Unstructured Dynamic Voxel Environments, Yuefeng Zhang Jan 1993

Mobile Robot Perception In Unknown And Unstructured Dynamic Voxel Environments, Yuefeng Zhang

Digitized Theses

The Occupancy Grid Method is a probabilistic spatial modelling technique. In this method, the space to be navigated is subdivided into a grid of cells. Associated with each cell is a probability that indicates the likelihood that that cell is occupied. This method was developed for handling a world where the robot was the only moving object. Thus, it lacks the ability to predict the location of moving objects over time.;In my thesis, an Extended Occupancy Grid Method is presented. The extension handles objects moving at constant velocity. In this method, a four-dimensional location-velocity space is subdivided into cells. Each …

Neuroanatomical And Neurochemical Organization Of Compartments In The Basal Ganglia Of The Rat, Nagalingam Rajakumar Jan 1993

Neuroanatomical And Neurochemical Organization Of Compartments In The Basal Ganglia Of The Rat, Nagalingam Rajakumar

Digitized Theses

The structural and neurochemical organization of the basal ganglia of the rat was investigated with highly sensitive modern anterograde and retrograde tracing methods in combination with immunocytochemical identification of intrinsic neuronal substances with the optical and laser-confocal microscope to address the fundamental organization of these centers as an integrated system.;Based on the present results and other evidence, a functional model of the basal ganglia is proposed: The corticostriatal inputs activate a large population of striatal neurons. Among these, appropriate neurons are 'selected' within each functional domain by the dopaminergic, cholinergic, and GABAergic recurrent collateral inputs. The same corticostriatal input simultaneously …

Dynamical Symmetry Breaking And Electroweak Processes, Nicholas Christopher Hill Jan 1993

Dynamical Symmetry Breaking And Electroweak Processes, Nicholas Christopher Hill

Digitized Theses

The on-mass-shell renormalization prescription of electroweak theory is extended to account for shifts in the mass-shell. These shifts arise from dynamical contributions generated by the nonperturbative content of the vacuum to the quark self-energies. Upper limits for the value of the dimension-3 fermion-antifermion condensate are found by considering its contribution to the u-d mass difference and the strangeness-changing nonleptonic decays of the kaon. Dynamical generation of fermion masses under chiral gauge interactions is also examined by considering the coupling of light fermions to a heavy fermion-antifermion condensate.

Regulation Of Gene Expression Of Surfactant-Associated Proteins In Developing Rabbit Lung, Jiejing Xu Jan 1993

Regulation Of Gene Expression Of Surfactant-Associated Proteins In Developing Rabbit Lung, Jiejing Xu

Digitized Theses

Pulmonary surfactant replacement therapy and antenatal glucocorticoid administration are the two treatment strategies used for Respiratory Distress Syndrome. Because of the important roles surfactant-associated proteins play in surfactant function, understanding the mechanisms involved in regulation of the genes encoding for the proteins in fetal development or upon glucocorticoid treatment is therefore of paramount importance in the overall design of an effective treatment regimen. We attempted in this project to investigate the developmental and glucocorticoid regulation of three surfactant proteins, SP-A, SP-B and SP-C, using the rabbit as a model. The mRNA levels for these three proteins were examined in developing …

A Numerical Investigation Into The Behaviour Of Reinforced Soil Walls, See Keung Ho Jan 1993

A Numerical Investigation Into The Behaviour Of Reinforced Soil Walls, See Keung Ho

Digitized Theses

A review of the available data from the literature relating to the performance of reinforced soil walls indicates that there are some significant deviations between field observations and the assumptions considered in current analytical and design methods. Furthermore, there are inconsistencies evident in the interpretation of the data obtained from instrumented cases relating to the stresses in the reinforced soil, the force in the reinforcement and the state of stress within the reinforced soil mass.;A comparison of the results from twelve current analytical and design methods with the performance of four reinforced soil walls case histories suggests that these methods …

Late Wisconsinan And Holocene Sedimentation Of Silverhope Valley, British Columbia, James Rodney Goff Jan 1993

Late Wisconsinan And Holocene Sedimentation Of Silverhope Valley, British Columbia, James Rodney Goff

Digitized Theses

Sixty-eight bedrock and sediment exposures, six lake bottom cores, and twenty-six bulk samples of river gravels were studied by various stratigraphic methods including: radiocarbon and caesium dating, tephrochronology and lithofacies analysis to interpret late Wisconsinan and Holocene deposits in the Silverhope Creek drainage basin.;Late Wisconsinan evidence suggests that during the downwasting and retreat of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet between approximately 11 500 and 11 000 years BP, there was one minor readvance and two smaller standstill/oscillations. During deglaciation a dead ice-dammed lake formed in front of the retreating ice mass. Partial lake drainage occurred initially by catastrophic flooding through dead …
