Paleomagnetism Of Mississippi Valley-Type Ores And Their Paleozoic Host Rocks In Eastern North America, Hairu Pan

Digitized Theses

In this research, paleomagnetic methods are used to study the magnetization characteristics of both ores and host rocks of several major Mississippi Valley-type (MVT) districts, to date their genesis, and thereby to provide paleomagnetic constraints for models of their genesis. In this thesis, research on three major MVT deposits and on a red bed unit has been undertaken. All four of the study areas are situated in or adjacent to the Ouachita-Appalachian orogenic belt in Paleozoic strata.;The Gays River MVT lead-zinc deposit in Nova Scotia is hosted in the Mississippian Windsor Group. A coeval regional hydrothermal event in the area, …

Surface Modifications Of Silicon Induced By Low Energy Reactive Ion Bombardment, Wayne Harold Chang Jan 1993

Surface Modifications Of Silicon Induced By Low Energy Reactive Ion Bombardment, Wayne Harold Chang

Digitized Theses

The effects of low energy reactive ion bombardment of semiconducting silicon material have been investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The residual surface damage induced by a conventional fluorocarbon plasma reactive ion etching of silicon consisted of a uniform fluorocarbon deposited film approximately 4nm in thickness which covered a silicon compound reaction layer. This reaction layer was comprised of silicon oxides, carbide and fluorosilyl species distributed in depth to approximately 2nm. The removal of the residuel surface damage was accomplished by an ozone oxidation plus a wet oxide chemical etching step processing and monitored by surface charge spectroscopy. This residual surface …

Dynamics Of Morbidity And Mortality In Africa And Implications For Health Care Planning, Sulaiman Maladoh Bah Jan 1993

Dynamics Of Morbidity And Mortality In Africa And Implications For Health Care Planning, Sulaiman Maladoh Bah

Digitized Theses

The dissertation aims to tie together the empirical, theoretical and policy oriented aspects dealing with the dynamics of morbidity and mortality in Africa. On the theoretical aspect, scholars are arguing that the epidemiologic transition theory which provided the framework for understanding African mortality in the past, is actually part of a broader health transition theory which also includes a health care transition. In this theory, the overemphasis on biomedical interventions is down-played. To understand African mortality, it is argued, we have to consider the social and cultural determinants. Also we have to consider morbidity and its relationship to mortality. This …

Cyclic Adenosine 3',5'-Monophosphate And Prostaglandin E(2) During Decidualization In The Rat, Gayle M. Yee Jan 1993

Cyclic Adenosine 3',5'-Monophosphate And Prostaglandin E(2) During Decidualization In The Rat, Gayle M. Yee

Digitized Theses

Prostaglandin E{dollar}\sb2{dollar} (PGE{dollar}\sb2{dollar}) is an important mediator of implantation and decidualization during pregnancy. However, its mechanism of action in the uterus is unclear. Endometrial alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity increases during decidualization in many species and provides a marker for assessment of cellular aspects of decidualization. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between PGE{dollar}\sb2{dollar} and cyclic adenosine 3{dollar}\sp\prime{dollar},5{dollar}\sp\prime{dollar}-monophosphate (cAMP) during decidualization in the rat. In ovariectomized rats treated with estrogen and progesterone to sensitize the uteri for decidualization, intrauterine infusion of indomethacin, an inhibitor of endogenous PG synthesis, inhibited the increase in endometrial ALP activity, which occurred …

Financing Patterns, Resource Scarcity, And New Venture Performance, Robert George Blunden

Digitized Theses

This research extends understanding of the determinants of new venture performance by focusing on two previously unexamined factors: financing patterns and resource scarcity. It was designed to examine the relationship between financing patterns and new venture performance and, in particular, to determine if milestone-based, incremental financing patterns, which are becoming more common, are associated with higher new venture performance than other financing patterns. It also examined the relationship between resource scarcity and new venture performance.;Data were collected on forty-one independent new ventures through the venture capitalists who financed them. The researcher reviewed the venture capitalists' files to evaluate the venture, …

Segregation And Oxidation Studies Of Aluminum-Lithium And Aluminum-Magnesium Alloys, Frank Joseph Esposto Jan 1993

Segregation And Oxidation Studies Of Aluminum-Lithium And Aluminum-Magnesium Alloys, Frank Joseph Esposto

Digitized Theses

Auger electron spectroscopy, work function measurements, low energy electron diffraction, nuclear reaction analysis, dynamic/static secondary ion mass spectrometry, thermal desorption spectroscopy, and synchrotron radiation-photoemission spectroscopy have been used to investigate the segregation and oxidation of (111) oriented Al-6.5(at.%)Li and (110) oriented Al-1.45(at%)Mg single crystal binary alloys. The resulting Li and Mg equilibrium surface concentrations are found to be 0.16 and 0.47 respectively. For both alloys, the increase in surface concentration was associated with a decrease in {dollar}\Delta\phi{dollar}. {dollar}\surd 3\rm x\surd 3R30\sp\circ{dollar} and c(2x2) superlattices were observed at the equilibrium surface concentrations for the Al-Li and Al-Mg alloys respectively. This is …

Hsp 72 In Rat Skeletal Muscle: Fibre Type Differences And Effect Of Exercise, Marius Locke Jan 1993

Hsp 72 In Rat Skeletal Muscle: Fibre Type Differences And Effect Of Exercise, Marius Locke

Digitized Theses

Western blot analyses of SDS-PAGE separated proteins from various hindlimb muscles from non-exercised control animals probed with an HSP 72 monoclonal antibody, demonstrated the constitutive expression of HSP 72 in rat muscles comprised primarily of Type I muscle fibres (soleus), but not in muscles comprised primarily of Type IIB/X fibres (white gastrocnemius-WG). In muscles of mixed fibre type, (plantaris and red gastrocnemius-RG) HSP 72 content was proportional to the percentage of Type I fibres.;Immunolocalization of HSP 72 in cross-sections from the soleus muscle demonstrated that both Type I and Type IIA fibres expressed HSP 72, but Type I fibres expressed …

Can A Local Government Ensure That Development Within Its Conurbation Area Is Financially Beneficial To Its Ratepayer?, Gabriel P. Dekel Jan 1993

Can A Local Government Ensure That Development Within Its Conurbation Area Is Financially Beneficial To Its Ratepayer?, Gabriel P. Dekel

Digitized Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to show that unchecked local development policies do not necessarily secure financial benefits to the local ratepayer and that they can pose a threat to the long-term well-being of communities. Yet local policy-makers are often unaware of this or unwilling to accept it. The theoretical review tries to explain the divorce between policy analysis and political behaviour. It shows how local government is constrained by political structures and processes which often result in an indiscriminate and costly approach to development policies as well as a deficient practice of fiscal impact analysis. An empirical study …

Suburban Land Constraints And Intraurban Income Distribution, Timothy J. Bailey Jan 1993

Suburban Land Constraints And Intraurban Income Distribution, Timothy J. Bailey

Digitized Theses

This dissertation examines the effect of space restrictions on the intraurban distribution of socioeconomic groups. It proposes that the centripetal income shifts evident in North American cities with suburban containment can be explained in part within the context of traditional neoclassical theory. A model is introduced to predict the residential location pattern in a metropolitan center when suburban land consumption constraints and a polycentric urban form are incorporated into the Alonso budget equation (Alonso, 1964). In this model two things happen to higher socioeconomic groups with a fixing of the size of new lots; the accessibility variable rises in relative …

Outsourcing Core Skills Into Non-Equity Alliance Networks, Kerry Mclellan Jan 1993

Outsourcing Core Skills Into Non-Equity Alliance Networks, Kerry Mclellan

Digitized Theses

Firms are outsourcing functions previously considered core competitive competencies. For example, many U.S. banks have contracted out their Information Technology (IT) functions. These relationships have taken the form of non-equity alliances. The thesis investigated: Why would firms outsource a core skill? Was this a sound strategic decision or one primarily motivated by immediate economic gain? Does this decision lead to the creation of sustainable competitive advantage and greater economic rents, or does it ultimately signal a surrendering of strategic sovereignty? In essence, does the accepted theory of competitive behaviour in bi-lateral market relationships apply to these non-equity alliances and the …

Picture-Word Differences In Memory Comparisons Involving Colour, Deborah Joan Stuart Jan 1993

Picture-Word Differences In Memory Comparisons Involving Colour, Deborah Joan Stuart

Digitized Theses

Picture-word differences in mental comparisons involving object colour were investigated. On each trial of Experiment 1, a colour was tachistoscopically presented beside either an uncoloured line drawing of an object or the object's name. Subjects indicated whether or not the colour differed from the object's real-life colour. The categorical structure of colour concepts was operationalized by using normative data so that the presented colours best exemplified basic and boundary (e.g., greenish blue) colour terms and were either from the same colour name category as the real-life colour of the object or from a different category. Also, perceptual distance between the …

Digitized Theses

Aluminosilicate mineral assemblages, with more than 30% Al{dollar}\sb2{dollar}O{dollar}\sb3{dollar} and less than 2% CaO+Na{dollar}\sb2{dollar}O+K{dollar}\sb2{dollar}O, occur on the western flank of the Cargo Muchacho Mountains, southeastern California. The aluminosilicate mineral assemblages are shallow-dipping tabular zones locally more than 100 m in total thickness. From bottom to top, they are: (a) the Feldspar Zone, with quartz-oligoclase-K-feldspar-biotite-epidote-magnetite, (b) the Muscovite Zone, with quartz-muscovite-biotite-magnetite-tourmaline-apatite, and (c) the Kyanite Zone, with quartz-kyanite-muscovite-magnetite-rutile-tourmaline-apatite (with or without andalusite, pyrophyllite, staurolite, lazulite, and specularite) occur in the Kyanite Zone.;The host rocks are find grained quartzofeldspathic gneiss of the Tumco Formation, and Jurassic intrusive rocks. The latter are 173 Ma …

Characterization Of Invariant Membrane Proteins Of Trypanosoma (Duttonella) Vivax, Barbara Anne Burleigh Jan 1993

Characterization Of Invariant Membrane Proteins Of Trypanosoma (Duttonella) Vivax, Barbara Anne Burleigh

Digitized Theses

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), raised against whole, fixed, uncoated, culture forms of Trypanosoma (Duttonella) vivax, were used to identify two invariant membrane proteins of this protozoan parasite. Since non-variant membrane proteins of the cell surface, flagellar pocket and endocytic pathway are potential targets for the control of trypanosomiasis of livestock by immunization, the identification and characterization of invariant membrane proteins is a necessary preliminary step.;A 65 kDA invariant membrane glycoprotein (gp65), identified using mAb 4E1, was the main focus of this study. Immunolocalization studies using the monoclonal antibody (mAb 4E1) for immunofluorescence staining and immunoelectron microscopy, demonstrated that the 65 kDa …

Submicron Correlations Of Receptor-Positions On Cell Surfaces, Paul St-Pierre Jan 1993

Submicron Correlations Of Receptor-Positions On Cell Surfaces, Paul St-Pierre

Digitized Theses

Scanning fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (S-FOS) is introduced as a technique to measure the distribution of receptors on cell surfaces. The receptors are made observable by the binding of a specific ligand that is fluorescently labeled. This technique is based on fluctuation analysis through direct calculation of correlation functions. It uses a confocal microscope configuration to obtain fluorescence records as a function of laser beam position on the surface of cells. The fluorescence records present fluctuations that have a characteristic persistence length equal to the laser beam width. The calculated correlation function decays as the laser beam intensity profile which is …

The Molecular Characterization Of Human Monoclonal Antiplatelet Autoantibodies, Gregory Andrew Denomme Jan 1993

The Molecular Characterization Of Human Monoclonal Antiplatelet Autoantibodies, Gregory Andrew Denomme

Digitized Theses

Autoimmune thrombocytopenia occurs in a number of clinical settings including idiopathic or autoimmune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and the lupus anticoagulant (LAC) syndrome. The etiology of the disease, the scope of the autoantigens targeted, and the epitopes involved in autoimmune thrombocytopenia are largely unknown. ITP has the hallmark of the presence of 'pathogenic' autoantibodies targeting platelet glycoproteins (GP) IIb/IIIa and GP Ib/IX. Associated with the thrombocytopenia in the LAC syndrome is the presence of anti-phospholipid antibodies (approximately 95% of cases). The detection of autoantibodies to a variety of self antigens in non-autoimmune individuals prompted this study to …

Geochemistry And Mineralogy Of The Igarape Bahia Lateritic Gold Deposit, Carajas, Brazil, Weisheng Zang Jan 1993

Geochemistry And Mineralogy Of The Igarape Bahia Lateritic Gold Deposit, Carajas, Brazil, Weisheng Zang

Digitized Theses

One of the most fascinating problems in economic geology is to understand the behaviour of surface ore deposits under conditions of intense tropical weathering. The Igarape Bahia lateritic gold deposit in the Carajas region of the Amazon has developed on a primary Cu(Au) mineralization zone hosted by chlorite schists which are hydrothermally altered basalts, pyroclastic and clastic sedimentary rocks in an Archean rift basin. From country rock towards the mineralization zone, both Fe/(Mg + Fe) ratio in chlorite and Ca/Na ratio in inclusion fluids increase, suggesting that the primary Cu(Au) mineralization was formed from the convection of high salinity fluids. …

Models For Steady State Flow Past A Cylinder, Sergio J. D'Alessio Jan 1993

Models For Steady State Flow Past A Cylinder, Sergio J. D'Alessio

Digitized Theses

Three steady state models for determining the flow of a viscous incompressible Newtonian isothermal fluid past a two-dimensional cylindrical object are proposed. These models offer numerical methods of solving the governing Navier-Stokes equations as well as a mathematical understanding of the nature of the flow.;In the first model, the behaviour of the vorticity is patterned for both large and small distances by expressing the vorticity as {dollar}\zeta\ =\ \Phi\rm e\sp{lcub}\rm F{rcub}{dollar} with F chosen to accommodate both boundary-layer and wake theory. The resulting equations are then solved by finite differences and by the method of Dennis and Chang (1970).;The second …

Ph Optimization Of Nucleophilic Reactions And Mechanisms Of Reactions Of Sulfonyl Chlorides, Joe Ying Lam Jan 1993

Ph Optimization Of Nucleophilic Reactions And Mechanisms Of Reactions Of Sulfonyl Chlorides, Joe Ying Lam

Digitized Theses

This thesis consists of four chapters all involving the chemistry of sulfonyl chlorides in water.;Chapter 1 describes the mechanisms of the reactions of alkanesulfonyl chlorides with water with and without added nucleophiles. Evidence is provided that the hydrolysis of alkanesulfonyl chlorides proceeds (a) at low pH, by S{dollar}\sb{lcub}\rm N{rcub}{dollar}2-S attack of water, (b) at intermediate pH, by rate determining attack of hydroxide anion to form sulfene which is then trapped by water, and (c) at high pH, by way of sulfene both formed and trapped by hydroxide anion. Among the following pathways observed in the reaction of alkanesulfonyl chlorides with …

Genomic Characterization Of Steroid Hormone-Binding Globulins, D Alan Underhill Jan 1993

Genomic Characterization Of Steroid Hormone-Binding Globulins, D Alan Underhill

Digitized Theses

Sex-hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and corticosteroid binding globulin (CBG) are the major plasma transport proteins for sex-steroids and glucocorticoids, respectively, and may impact directly upon steroid hormone bioavailability to target cells. Androgen binding protein (ABP) is closely related to SHBG and is believed to maintain an androgenic environment for sperm maturation. The isolation of SHBG-related cDNAs from human testis and a corresponding transcription unit indicates that SHBG and ABP are encoded by the same gene. In addition, the SHBG/ABP gene gives rise to two novel testicular transcripts through a process of alternative splicing. The putative proteins encoded by these transcripts …

Radical Possibilities: Literature In The English Revolution, 1640-1660, Brian Leonard Patton Jan 1993

Radical Possibilities: Literature In The English Revolution, 1640-1660, Brian Leonard Patton

Digitized Theses

This dissertation explores the circulation of radical social and political ideas in the literature of the 1640-1660 Revolution, when England's most fundamental institutions, from the monarchy to the patriarchal family, appeared in danger of annihilation. For students of literature, the period is so rich that its relative neglect seems remarkable. A lapse in government control over the nation's printing presses resulted in a veritable explosion of books, pamphlets and broadsides, and a literature that offers an unprecedented diversity of views and voices. Surveying a wide range of texts, from the familiar to the lesser-known, my study draws upon insights gleaned …

Unemployment Cycles: Aggregate Disturbances And Sectoral Shifts, Jing Lu Jan 1993

Unemployment Cycles: Aggregate Disturbances And Sectoral Shifts, Jing Lu

Digitized Theses

This thesis consists of three essays, all of which examine the relative importance of aggregate disturbances and sectoral shifts in the explanation of unemployment cycles.;Chapter 1 of the thesis uses a search-theoretical framework to analyze a multi-sector economy in which labor productivity is subject to aggregate and sectoral shocks. After a critical review of the existing literature in this area and questioning the previous methods of shock decomposition into aggregate disturbance and sectoral shift components, this paper develops a new method for partitioning the effects of these two shocks on unemployment. It is argued that the mean and the dispersion …

The Formation Of Massive Stars: A 30 Mo Case Study, Martin Beech Jan 1993

The Formation Of Massive Stars: A 30 Mo Case Study, Martin Beech

Digitized Theses

I have used a generalized Naur and Osterbrock (1953) criterion to investigate the manner in which a convective core develops. Stars more massive than {dollar}\sim{dollar}30 Mo can develop convective cores before the onset of central hydrogen burning. It is estimated that stars more massive than {dollar}\sim{dollar}95 Mo will have a convective core throughout the whole of their pre-main sequence phase.;Pre-main sequence evolution has been calculated under the accretion paradigm: beginning with a collapsed core, mass is accreted until a final stellar mass is reached. The calculations begin with a one solar mass core.;The initial 1 Mo model was fully convective …

Isolation And Characterization Of A Genetic Locus Involved In Growth And Pathogenicity On Tomato Plants By Pseudomonas Syringae Pv Tomato, Dennis Paul Jackson Jan 1993

Isolation And Characterization Of A Genetic Locus Involved In Growth And Pathogenicity On Tomato Plants By Pseudomonas Syringae Pv Tomato, Dennis Paul Jackson

Digitized Theses

Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato is the causal agent of bacterial speck on tomato. An essential feature of this organism, in the pathogenic process, is its ability to enter the intercellular spaces of its host and use the available plant substrates for growth. Tomato leaves contain quantities of carbon energy in the form of carboxylates. A Tn5 mutant, DC3481, cannot utilize carboxylates as a source of carbon energy for growth (CA{dollar}\sp-{dollar}) and is nonpathogenic (Path{dollar}\sp-{dollar}) on tomato. The focus of this thesis was to utilize DC3481 to isolate and characterize P. syringae pv. tomato DNA sequences involved with growth and pathogenicity …

Mobile Robot Perception In Unknown And Unstructured Dynamic Voxel Environments, Yuefeng Zhang Jan 1993

Mobile Robot Perception In Unknown And Unstructured Dynamic Voxel Environments, Yuefeng Zhang

Digitized Theses

The Occupancy Grid Method is a probabilistic spatial modelling technique. In this method, the space to be navigated is subdivided into a grid of cells. Associated with each cell is a probability that indicates the likelihood that that cell is occupied. This method was developed for handling a world where the robot was the only moving object. Thus, it lacks the ability to predict the location of moving objects over time.;In my thesis, an Extended Occupancy Grid Method is presented. The extension handles objects moving at constant velocity. In this method, a four-dimensional location-velocity space is subdivided into cells. Each …

The Response Of An Hyperpure Germanium Detector To Ionizing Radiation, Shao Ying Tong Jan 1993

The Response Of An Hyperpure Germanium Detector To Ionizing Radiation, Shao Ying Tong

Digitized Theses

A basic understanding of the response of semiconductor detectors to ionizing radiation is important for their proper usage and their further development. Such devices may also be used to explore the energy deposition process in semiconductors.;The detailed response of an HPGe detector ({dollar}\sim{dollar}1 cm{dollar}\sp3{dollar} hyperpure Ge with an ion-implanted front contact) to ionizing radiation has been studied with regard to the radiation ionization energy ratio, {dollar}\varepsilon\sb{lcub}\rm ion{rcub}{dollar}/{dollar}\varepsilon\sb0{dollar}, using radioactive {dollar}\alpha{dollar} and {dollar}\gamma{dollar} sources and accelerated ion beams ({dollar}\sp1{dollar}H, {dollar}\sp{lcub}3,4{rcub}{dollar}He, {dollar}\sp7{dollar}Li). The data span the energy range of a few hundred keV to a few MeV. Effects of temperature and bias …

Radiotracers For The Angiotensin System, Vincenzo Quiquero Jan 1993

Radiotracers For The Angiotensin System, Vincenzo Quiquero

Digitized Theses

Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), a dipeptidyl carboxypeptidase, is one of the enzyme components of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. ACE is responsible for the production of angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor, and for the inactivation of the potent vasodepressor peptide bradykinin. The enzyme is a vascular endothelial component of many tissues (i.e. lungs, kidney, preoptic region of brain) and has been shown to be localized on the lumenal surface of the vascular endothelium. Diseases involving granuloma (i.e. sarcoidosis, silicosis, asbestosis) are known to change the distribution of ACE and to cause hypertension. A radiolabelled pharmaceutical which binds with ACE could permit the …

Electrical Strengthening Of Clays By Dielectrophoresis, (Julie) Qiulin Shang Jan 1993

Electrical Strengthening Of Clays By Dielectrophoresis, (Julie) Qiulin Shang

Digitized Theses

Dielectrophoresis, the action of a strong, non-uniform electric field on particles, is potentially a new technique for soil improvement. The principles and technical implementation of dielectrophoretic strengthening of natural clays were investigated in this study. The research included two aspects: the theory of dielectrophoresis in clay-water-electrolyte systems and the experiments of dielectrophoretic treatment on natural clays.;The dielectrophoretic force imposed on a clay-water-electrolyte system is determined by the configuration of the non-uniform electric field and the effective polarizability. The direction of the dielectrophoretic force is governed by the effective polarizability that is in turn controlled by the permittivity and conductivity of …

Pseudomonas syringae causes freezing of supercooled water at temperatures close to 0{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C. In this study, the growth kinetics and ice nucleation activity (INA) of the bacterium P. syringae cit 7 were investigated under a variety of culture conditions as well as in batch and continuous bioreactors. The "drop freezing assay" technique used for measurement of INA was first investigated and the effect of several variables on this assay was examined. When P. syringae cit 7 was cultured aerobically in a medium consisting of sucrose, peptone, K{dollar}\sb2{dollar}HPO{dollar}\sb4{dollar}, KH{dollar}\sb2{dollar}PO{dollar}\sb4{dollar}, and MgSO{dollar}\sb4\cdot{dollar}7H{dollar}\sb2{dollar}O (pH 7.0) at 25{dollar}\sp\circ{dollar}C for 48 h, the highest INA was …

The Effect Of Buyer-Seller Relationships On The Buyer's Evaluation And Choice, David William Large Jan 1993

The Effect Of Buyer-Seller Relationships On The Buyer's Evaluation And Choice, David William Large

Digitized Theses

Sellers of technology-based capital equipment are often required to participate in a competitive bidding process prior to the buyer's final evaluation and choice. Factors such as the competing sellers' relative prices and relative functional benefits are certainly important to the buyer. However, the relative quality of the competing sellers' buyer-seller (B-S) relationships, both before and during the bidding process, may also play an important role. Therefore, the management problem addressed by this dissertation, stated from the seller's perspective, is how to manage B-S relationships to favourably affect the buyer's choice in competitive bid situations.;A research model comprising eight constructs and …
