Developing Laminar Natural Convective Flow In Inclined Square Ducts--A Preliminary Investigation, Michael L. Papple Jan 1988

Developing Laminar Natural Convective Flow In Inclined Square Ducts--A Preliminary Investigation, Michael L. Papple

Digitized Theses

Steady, laminar, developing natural convective flow in vertical and inclined open-ended ducts was studied by the author using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Square ducts were considered. The ducts were isothermal, and heated to a temperature above that of the ambient fluid (air).;This study was unique in two respects; almost no information is available at present on natural convective flow in inclined ducts, and to the best of the authors' knowledge this is the first heat transfer study to employ an interferometer with the test beam traversing the heated model in a direction which was not horizontal.;Test beam averaged Nusselt numbers, and …

Aspects Of Sims Matrix Effects In Aluminum-Gallium - Arsenide, William Harvey Robinson Jan 1988

Aspects Of Sims Matrix Effects In Aluminum-Gallium - Arsenide, William Harvey Robinson

Digitized Theses

In secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) the detected ion count rate must be corrected for differences in matrix when depth profiling semiconductor samples with layered structures of different composition. Few published studies of the matrix effect exist and those that have studied the matrices give widely differing factors. The situation is further complicated by secondary ion molecular interferences which can completely mask the ion signal of interest. These problems are examined in this thesis.;The depth distribution of ion implanted samples of {dollar}\sp{lcub}28{rcub}{dollar}Si and {dollar}\sp{lcub}52{rcub}{dollar}Cr in Al{dollar}\sb{lcub}\rm X{rcub}{dollar}Ga{dollar}\sb{lcub}\rm 1-X{rcub}{dollar}As and X equal to 0, 0.066, 0.21 and 0.40 for energies of …

Operator Regularization, Sanjiv Singh Samant Jan 1988

Operator Regularization, Sanjiv Singh Samant

Digitized Theses

In this thesis, a computational method for perturbative quantum field theory, known as operator regularization, is presented. It is used in conjunction with the Feynman path integral and background field quantization. Green's functions are evaluated using a perturbative expansion due to Schwinger, which employs an expansion of the generating functional in powers of the background field. In contrast to the usual Feynman diagramatic technique, this expansion is made after the evaluation of the path integral. By regulating only the operators occurring in the generating functional, operator regularization does not explicitly break the symmetries of the original lagrangian. No ambiguities arise …

Metabolic Modulation Of Mammalian Dna Excision Repair, Timothy John Schrader Jan 1988

Metabolic Modulation Of Mammalian Dna Excision Repair, Timothy John Schrader

Digitized Theses

The influence of a variety of metabolic factors on DNA excision repair was examined in studies involving measurements of damaged base removal, repair replication, and size of the resulting resynthesized regions or repair patches.;First, ultraviolet light (UVL)- and dimethylsulfate (DMS)-induced excision repair was examined in quiescent and lectin-stimulated bovine lymphocytes. Upon mitogenic stimulation, UVL-induced repair increased by a factor of 2 to 3, and reached this maximum 2 days before the onset of DNA replication. However, DMS-induced repair increased sevenfold in parallel with DNA replication. Repair patch sizes were smaller for DMS-induced damage reflecting patches of 7 nucleotides in quiescent …

Digitized Theses

The chromospherically active G8 dwarf Xi Boo A has been monitored spectroscopically for four observing seasons. A total of 121 high resolution, high signal-to-noise Reticon exposures (representing {dollar}\sim{dollar}300 hours of observing) were obtained at the University of Western Ontario's 1.2 m telescope.;The data were analyzed for variations in the mean line asymmetry, line strength, and line broadening, using a combination of line bisector and Fourier techniques. Systematic variations in all quantities were found, which repeat with a period of 6.43 {dollar}\pm{dollar} 0.01 days. The line broadening variations show no evidence of being magnetic in nature, and there is no evidence …

Generalizations Of The Segal Conjecture, Piotr Mavian Zelewski Jan 1988

Generalizations Of The Segal Conjecture, Piotr Mavian Zelewski

Digitized Theses

The main result of this thesis may be described in the following manner: Let G be a finite group and let {dollar}\pi{dollar} be a compact Lie group. Define A(G,{dollar}\pi{dollar}) to be the free abelian group generated by equivalence classes of subhomomorphisms (G {dollar}\supset{dollar} H {dollar}{lcub}\buildrel\rho\over\longrightarrow{rcub}\ \pi){dollar}. A(G,{dollar}\pi{dollar}) is a module over the Burnside ring A(G). Our main result states that {dollar}\Psi{dollar} is an isomorphism. This generalises Carlsson's proof …

Complexes Of Platinum Containing Sulphide And Diphosphine Ligands, Nasim Hadj-Bagheri Jan 1988

Complexes Of Platinum Containing Sulphide And Diphosphine Ligands, Nasim Hadj-Bagheri

Digitized Theses

This thesis describes the chemistry of some homonuclear and mixed-metal complexes of platinum with sulphide and diphosphine ligands.; (PtPh{dollar}\sb2{dollar}({dollar}\eta\sp1{dollar}-dmpm){dollar}\sb2{dollar}); dmpm = bis(dimethylphosphino)methane, is formed by the facile reaction of a diaryl platinum species with excess ligand. Synthesis of symmetric and asymmetric binuclear platinum complexes is achieved through the bonding of the uncoordinated phosphines to a second platinum centre. Oxidative addition reactions of these dimers are studied.; (Pt{dollar}\sb2{dollar}({dollar}\mu{dollar}-dppm){dollar}\sb3{dollar}); dppm = bis(diphenylphosphine)methane, reacts with carbonyl sulphide to yield (Pt{dollar}\sb2{dollar}({dollar}\mu{dollar}-S)({dollar}\mu{dollar}-dppm)({dollar}\eta\sp1{dollar}-dppm){dollar}\sb2{dollar}). This complex is used as a precursor in construction of trinuclear clusters. Coordination to a third centre can be achieved through the mono-coordinated …

Bibliographic And Text-Linguistic Schemata In The User-Intermediary Interaction, Bryce Laverne Allen Jan 1988

Bibliographic And Text-Linguistic Schemata In The User-Intermediary Interaction, Bryce Laverne Allen

Digitized Theses

Information systems require input from their users in order to perform information retrieval. In many systems, that input is provided by interaction between users and intermediaries. The way users understand and express their information needs may be affected by the cognitive structures (schemata) by which they have organized their knowledge of the search topic, or by the schemata introduced in the questions which intermediaries ask.;The bibliographic and text-linguistic schemata studied in this research are related to two ways of thinking about textual materials. The bibliographic schema leads to an emphasis on elements of bibliographic description: authors, titles, and subject keywords. …

Three Essays In Mechanism Design, Dominique Michel Demougin Jan 1988

Three Essays In Mechanism Design, Dominique Michel Demougin

Digitized Theses

Microeconomic literature has shown an increasing interest in problems with asymmetric information. A general consensus from this section of the literature is that the introduction of an asymmetry in information affects the distribution of wealth between the different agents as well as the overall efficiency of the system. It is also generally thought that a mechanism designer can do better than to average over the information set or, alternatively, that communication has a positive value. The present research shows that these conclusions are very sensitive to changes in the assumptions of the models. The first essay analyzes a principal-agent model …

Foundational Issues In The Representational Theory Of Mind, Mary Frances Egan Jan 1988

Foundational Issues In The Representational Theory Of Mind, Mary Frances Egan

Digitized Theses

The representational theory of mind (RTM) construes propositional attitude tokenings as formal processes defined over semantically interpreted symbol structures. According to the RTM, mental representations have their causal roles in virtue of their syntax.;In the thesis I evaluate the prospects for a theory of mind that (i) individuates mental states by reference to their contents and (ii) construes mental processes as syntactic processes. I examine and criticize a number of recent proposals, notably those of Fodor and Burge, for the individuation of mental states by their contents. I conclude that the arguments, on both sides, that allege to show that …

Applied General Equilibrium Analysis Of Customs Unions And Interregional Labour Mobility, Richard Claude Jones Jan 1988

Applied General Equilibrium Analysis Of Customs Unions And Interregional Labour Mobility, Richard Claude Jones

Digitized Theses

This thesis develops various extensions and applications of applied general equilibrium modelling techniques. Essay I deals with the modelling of labour migration and builds on the regional numerical general equilibrium model of Canada developed by Jones and Whalley (forthcoming). Their limited migration decision rule is extended to involve a comparison of relative utility levels across regions. The major implication for model results is that measured migration responses may be dampened under certain policy simulations; this can result in different conclusions being drawn from simulation exercises.;Essay II considers the application of this model to the study of the Canadian equalization system …

Partial- And General-Equilibrium Evaluations Of The Impact Of Energy Policies In Canada, Gordon Joseph Lenjosek Jan 1988

Partial- And General-Equilibrium Evaluations Of The Impact Of Energy Policies In Canada, Gordon Joseph Lenjosek

Digitized Theses

This dissertation is primarily concerned with evaluating the welfare implications of the National Energy Program (NEP) for Canada in static, partial- and general-equilibrium frameworks. Foreign participation in the Canadian economy is incorporated in analyzing the allocational and distributional effects of these petroleum pricing and fiscal policies.;The international redistribution of crude oil rents as well as efficiency and intranational revenue redistribution effects of both NEP pricing and fiscal policies on the Canadian crude oil market are addressed in partial equilibrium analyses.;A unique and relatively simple approach to general-equilibrium modelling (developed in association with John Whalley) is used to analyze the welfare …

Bid-Ask Spreads: An Examination Of Systematic Behavior Using Intraday Data On Canadian And Us Exchanges, David Carlyle Porter Jan 1988

Bid-Ask Spreads: An Examination Of Systematic Behavior Using Intraday Data On Canadian And Us Exchanges, David Carlyle Porter

Digitized Theses

Recently, many authors have noted anomalies in risk adjusted returns as measured by the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). The majority of these studies are based implicitly or explicitly on two assumptions: (A) there are no systematic cross-sectional or time-series differences in the probability of a trade occurring at the bid or at the ask, and (B) there are no systematic time-series movements in proportional bid-ask spreads.;In this thesis, I test the validity of these two Assumptions by testing four subsets of Assumption A, using LOGIT regressions and a single subset of Assumption B, using a SUR regression. The Canadian …

Asymmetric Information And Union Strike Behavior In Competitive Industries, Glen Alan Stirling Jan 1988

Asymmetric Information And Union Strike Behavior In Competitive Industries, Glen Alan Stirling

Digitized Theses

When firms have private information a union may use a strike to reveal information about the firm. This thesis has asymmetrically-informed agents in a competitive industry in which union and nonunion firms may exist. This environment makes it possible to derive a wide class of predictions concerning union strike behavior. Many of the new predictions arise from the possibility of less than 100% unionization and the implied demand independence results. Also, multiple firm types may exist at any one time in an industry. This leads to a strong result concerning the joint distribution of wages and strikes within an industry, …

Additional observations have also been made of the sharp-lined helium-strong stars HD 58260 and {dollar}\delta{dollar} Ori C. These data, and additional Zeeman analyzer observations, have been used in an attempt to determine the magnetic field geometries and abundance distributions of the program stars. The models have been obtained by use of a line synthesis program …

Dysfunctional Attitudes And Vulnerability To Depression: Implications For Stress Appraisals And Coping, Douglas Bruce Cane Jan 1988

Dysfunctional Attitudes And Vulnerability To Depression: Implications For Stress Appraisals And Coping, Douglas Bruce Cane

Digitized Theses

In recent years a number of models of depression have been developed which provide a theoretical basis for identifying factors that may increase a person's risk for depression. One such model, Beck's cognitive model of depression, hypothesizes that individuals who endorse a large number of dysfunctional attitudes are at risk for depression, and that the interaction of dysfunctional thinking with stressful life events results in depressive symptomatology. Using a measure of daily hassles to assess stress, the present study provided an evaluation of this proposed interaction. In addition, the stress appraisals and coping responses employed by these vulnerable individuals to …

Adult Age Differences In Metacognition: Monitoring And Motivational Beliefs, Patricia Anne Devolder Jan 1988

Adult Age Differences In Metacognition: Monitoring And Motivational Beliefs, Patricia Anne Devolder

Digitized Theses

Older adults perform less well on a variety of cognitive tasks and use efficient strategies less often than do younger adults. Recently, metacognitive processes have been implicated in explanation of these phenomena. For example, the elderly may use strategies less often because they may be less aware of cognitive performance than are younger adults. These hypotheses motivate study of metacognition across the lifespan.;Adult age differences in cognitive monitoring were examined in two studies across a variety of tasks. Recall and recognition tests were administered in both studies. A measure of practical problem-solving was included in the first study, and face-name …

Structure-Function Relationships In The Rna Binding Activities Of Ribosomal Protein S20 Of Escherichia Coli, Brooke Cameron Donly Jan 1988

Structure-Function Relationships In The Rna Binding Activities Of Ribosomal Protein S20 Of Escherichia Coli, Brooke Cameron Donly

Digitized Theses

The ribosomal protein S20 of Escherichia coli is one of only six small subunit proteins capable of binding independently to 16S rRNA. To define the regions of S20 required for binding to 16S rRNA, the binding of S20 and a number of C-terminal deletion mutants to 16S rRNA were measured. Mutant S20s constructed using recombinant DNA technology were synthesized in vitro by coupled transcription-translation and assayed directly. The affinity of S20 produced in vitro for 16S rRNA was found to be 1.2 {dollar}\times{dollar} 10{dollar}\sp7{dollar} M{dollar}\sp{lcub}-1{rcub}{dollar} using a gel filtration assay. Removal of just 6 residues from the C-terminus of the …

The Diffusion Of Cigarette Smoking: An Exploratory Analysis, Roberta Gail Ferrence Jan 1988

The Diffusion Of Cigarette Smoking: An Exploratory Analysis, Roberta Gail Ferrence

Digitized Theses

Rates of cigarette smoking vary considerably by age, sex, social class, geographic area, and period, but current theories of smoking behaviour were not intended to account for many of the major trends. A diffusion model has been used to explain the adoption, spread, and discontinuance of a number of new behaviours and techniques. In this thesis, a number of empirical generalizations developed by Rogers (1982) are tested using several approaches and data sets to determine the "goodness of fit" smoking behaviour with the diffusion model. These include predictions about the nature of the diffusion curve, the characteristics of cigarettes, and …

The Role Of The Subfornical Organ In The Control Of Cardiovascular Function And Fluid Homeostasis, Michael Bentov Gutman Jan 1988

The Role Of The Subfornical Organ In The Control Of Cardiovascular Function And Fluid Homeostasis, Michael Bentov Gutman

Digitized Theses

Increased circulating levels of angiotensin II (ANG II) are known to act at the subfornical organ (SFO) to produce increases in arterial pressure, drinking and secretion of arginine vasopressin (AVP). These studies were done to investigate whether the SFO projections to the nucleus medianus (NM), supraoptic nucleus (SON) and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH) mediate these responses.;Experiments done in urethane anesthetized rats showed that the SFO was the most sensitive area in the region for eliciting cardiovascular responses consisting of short and long latency increases in arterial pressure, when electrically stimulated or microinjected with L-glutamate. Ganglionic blockade abolished the …

Wind And Wave Loads On A Tension Leg Platform: Theory And Experiment, Peter James Vickery Jan 1988

Wind And Wave Loads On A Tension Leg Platform: Theory And Experiment, Peter James Vickery

Digitized Theses

This very low natural frequencies of compliant offshore structures have raised the concern about the significance of the dynamic action of wind in the response of such platforms. In this thesis the effect of wind loads on the response of a Tension Leg Platform is examined in detail.;The study examines the importance of wind loads through the use of two different numerical models and through an experimental study carried out in a wind-wave flume, where a dynamic model of a Tension Leg Platform was subjected to the action of properly scaled random wind and wave loads. The numerical models include …

Effects Of Permanent Dipoles And Static Fields On Molecular Spectra, Mary Ann Kmetic Jan 1988

Effects Of Permanent Dipoles And Static Fields On Molecular Spectra, Mary Ann Kmetic

Digitized Theses

An analytic expression for the absorption spectra of a two-level molecule or atom is derived, within the rotating wave approximation (RWA), which includes the effects of permanent dipole moments and static electric fields. The derivation is for the interaction of the system with a plane-polarized sinusoidal electromagnetic field (EMF) in the semi-classical electric dipole approximation. The RWA resonance profile, and a series of exactly calculated two-level model spectra, are used to investigate some single- and multi-photon spectral effects due to permanent dipoles and static fields, relative to the atomic problem (no permanent dipoles). These effects include the occurrence of even …

Amiodarone Toxicity: Relationships To Cumulative Dose And Serum Drug Concentrations With Preliminary Observations Of Changes In Superoxide Dismutase Activity, Paul Timothy Pollak Jan 1988

Amiodarone Toxicity: Relationships To Cumulative Dose And Serum Drug Concentrations With Preliminary Observations Of Changes In Superoxide Dismutase Activity, Paul Timothy Pollak

Digitized Theses

Amiodarone, a cardiac antiarrhythmic agent, provides greater efficacy, more convenient dosing, and produces fewer acute adverse effects than most other antiarrhythmic agents. Toxic effects do occur during chronic therapy, of which pulmonary fibrosis is the most serious. Relationships between adverse effects, serum drug concentrations and administered dose are not yet well understood. Lamellar inclusions observed in the lung with amiodarone pulmonary toxicity resemble those from damage by superoxide free radicals in paraquat-induced pulmonary fibrosis. Observation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity in patients receiving amiodarone was considered a possible source of preliminary evidence that amiodarone alters free radical metabolism. A liquid …
