Culture War: How The Nazi Party Recast Nietzsche, David B. Dennis
Culture War: How The Nazi Party Recast Nietzsche, David B. Dennis
David B. Dennis
High culture played an important political role in Hitler’s Germany. References to music, history, philosophy, and art formed a key part of the Nazi strategy to reverse the symptoms of decline perceived after World War I. Allusions to great creators and their works were used as propaganda to remind the Volk to love and worship their nation. In the words of the French scholar Eric Michaud, author of The Cult of Art in Nazi Germany, the Nazis used culture “to make the genius of the race visible to that race.” And to cap off these images of a great national …

Most work concentrates on publications Nazis targeted at expert audiences, in this case music journals. To think our histories of Nazi music politics are complete without comprehensive analysis of the party daily is premature. One learns from this resource precisely what Nazi propagandists wanted average party members and Germans in general, not just top-level officials and scholars, to think—even about music. Therein, we see how contributors placed a Nazi “spin” on music history and composer’s biographies. …

Initial Experience In Moving Key Academic Department Functions To Social Networking Sites, David Dennis, George K. Thiruvathukal, Konstantin Läufer
David B. Dennis
We discuss our initial experience with the transition from conventional technology to social networking sites and other cloud-backed sites for three core business functions of an academic computer science department at a mid-size private university: course management, research collaboration, and community engagement. We first discuss the social/cultural context that informs our technology choices, as well as the evolution of the technology choices themselves. Then, we identify the targeted department functions and their actors. Next, we describe the past and present technical architectures used to support these functions. We conclude with a discussion of our preliminary experience with this transition and …

History Of Computing, George K. Thiruvathukal, David B. Dennis
David B. Dennis

Advances in this area have often been closely involved in social and political transformations. This course will provide a venue for students to learn about history through the evolution of number systems and arithmetic, calculating and computing machines, and advanced communication technology …
