Initial Experiences Gained And Initiatives Employed In The Teaching Of Java Programming In The Institute Of Technology Tallaght, Eamonn Hyland, Gary Clynch
Conference Papers
This paper describes recent experiences gained and initiatives employed in the teaching of Java programming to first and second year students in the Institute of Technology Tallaght from September 2000 to March 2002. It outlines some elearning, technological and pedagogical initiatives that were undertaken within the department and the resultant preliminary outcomes. The outcomes have been determined after detailed analysis of the results of a survey which was commissioned to determine the effectiveness of the initiatives and also to identify those parts of the Java language which were causing students particular difficulty. The students surveyed are currently completing their fourth …
An Efficient Procedure For Viscous Propeller Flow Field Calculations, Fergal Boyle
An Efficient Procedure For Viscous Propeller Flow Field Calculations, Fergal Boyle
Conference Papers
An efficient procedure has been developed for the computation of the three-dimensional, compressible, viscous flow field around a general propeller geometry with the inflow at zero angles of incidence and yaw. The solution procedure combines a recently developed Reynolds-Averaged-Navier-Stokes equations solver with a commercially available grid generator designed specifically for turbomachinery configurations. Preliminary results from the calculation of laminar and turbulent incompressible flow over a flat plate demonstrate that the flow solver is capable of capturing boundary-layer behaviour accurately. Results from the prediction of the transonic flow over a two-bladed propeller geometry show that the procedure is accurate and efficient …
Evaporative Cooling Availability In Water Based Sensible Cooling Systems, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Evaporative Cooling Availability In Water Based Sensible Cooling Systems, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Conference Papers
Recent developments have prompted a review of evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of cooling modern deep plan buildings. Prominent among these developments is the success of high temperature sensible cooling systems, such as chilled ceilings, which require a supply of cooling water at 14 to 18°C. Crucial to the success of evaporative cooling technology, as a significant means of cooling in modern applications, is the ability to generate cooling water, in an indirect circuit, at a temperature which closely approaches the ambient adiabatic saturation temperature or wet bulb temperature. Recent research in this area has shown that it …

Energy Reduction By Enhanced Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings In Martime Climates, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Energy Reduction By Enhanced Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings In Martime Climates, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Conference Papers
Direct cooling of buildings by water evaporation has traditionally been seen as appropriate, only, in dry and arid climates, which experience high levels of wet bulb temperature depression. The technique has generally not been applied in maritime climates where low levels of wet bulb temperature depression are frequently found. However, recent developments in enhancing heat and mass transfer in cooling towers, together with the success of high temperature sensible cooling systems, such as chilled ceiling panels and beams, have prompted a review of the evaporative cooling technique as an effective and low energy means of cooling modern deep plan buildings, …

The Design And Performance Of An Evaporative Cooling Test Rig For A Maritime Climate, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Conference Papers
Recent developments have prompted a review of the use of cooling tower based evaporative cooling technology as an effective means of cooling modern buildings. Prominent among these developments is the success of high temperature cooling systems such as radiant ceiling panels and chilled beams. At present, however, there is little published literature which gives a quantitative, in depth analysis of the performance or energy efficiency of cooling towers, used in maritime climates, in conjunction with heat exchangers and run at low approach and low wet bulb temperatures throughout the free cooling season. This lack of knowledge has meant that many …

Development Of An Amperometric Biosensor For Lactate., Brian Lillis, Catherine M. Grogan, Helen Berney, Bill Lane
Development Of An Amperometric Biosensor For Lactate., Brian Lillis, Catherine M. Grogan, Helen Berney, Bill Lane
Conference Papers
A gold enzyme electrode for lactate, fabricated on silicon has been developed. Standard silicon processing and micromachining techniques have been applied to the fabrication of three sensor types.
Two planar types and a containment sensor are presented. The enzyme lactate oxidase (LOX) was immobilised in a suitable matrix and placed on a planar gold electrode or in a gold coated, KOH etched silicon cavity. Activity and stability of the enzyme LOX was assessed in a modified BSA gel and two sol gel matrices. The enzyme has shown above average stability of three months, stored dry, when immobilised in a sol …

Using Xml To Network Distributed Analytical Instruments: Back To The Future?, Benjamin Jung, Damon Berry, Jane Grimson
Using Xml To Network Distributed Analytical Instruments: Back To The Future?, Benjamin Jung, Damon Berry, Jane Grimson
Conference Papers
There has been a paradigm shift in medical informatics standards in recent years from the message-oriented approach to a more distributed systems approach. However, despite all the early promise of distributed applications, they haven't been widely adopted in the health domain for various reasons. As a result, despite an increasing need for a standardised distributed solution for analytical laboratory instruments, many implementers of instrument interfaces are still using proprietary serial interfaces which do not support distribution. The emergence of the eXtended Markup Language (XML) specification in 1998 revived the fortunes of the messaged oriented methodology. This paper presents a partial …

A New Archaeoastronomical Investigation Of The Irish Axial-Stone Circles, Frank T. Prendergast, Clive L. Ruggles
Conference Papers
This paper presents the preliminary results of a project undertaken in 1994 to investigate the astronomical potential of the axial-stone circles (ASCs) of seven or more stones in Counties Cork and Kerry, south-west Ireland. This group of sites is of particular interest in that the monuments in the group bear a striking resemblance to the recumbent stone circles (RSCs) of Aberdeenshire, eastern Scotland, which appear to exhibit a strong pattern of alignment in relation to prominent hilltop summits and the rising and setting position of the moon. The first indications from the Irish data are that similar patterns of alignment …
