Numerical Modeling Of Concrete Masonry Walls Strengthened By Fiber Reinforced Polymers Under Lateral Loads, Mohamed Salama Jul 2006

Numerical Modeling Of Concrete Masonry Walls Strengthened By Fiber Reinforced Polymers Under Lateral Loads, Mohamed Salama

Archived Theses and Dissertations

The use of fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) for the seismic retrofit of masonry walls is on the rise. Design formulae are available to estimate the lateral load capacity of the strengthened walls. However, recent experimental data from tests conducted on full scale concrete masonry walls under cyclic lateral loads have shown that these design capacities have not been reached because of the occurrence of other failure modes not accounted for in the design formulae. The limiting failure mode in all test samples referred to in this work was due to premature compression failure of the masonry units at the wall …

Value Engineering In Academic Buildings In Egypt, Ahmed M El-Adawy Nassef Jun 2006

Value Engineering In Academic Buildings In Egypt, Ahmed M El-Adawy Nassef

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Value engineering is a systematic approach used in various industries and construction industry as well to remove the unnecessary costs without any sacrifice in function, safety or target quality.

This research studies the awareness and implementation of value engineering to the construction of university buildings in Egypt for the huge amow1ts of money spent in these projects. This was done by investigating twenty three fim1s which represents all the various parties involved in the construction of university buildings.

The questionnaire is designed and questions are put to serve the objectives of the research. The data collected in the research questionnaire …

Numerical Modeling Of Infill Rc Walls In Seismic Retrofit Of Rc Frames, Mohamed Mohamed Slah El-Din Darwish Jun 2006

Numerical Modeling Of Infill Rc Walls In Seismic Retrofit Of Rc Frames, Mohamed Mohamed Slah El-Din Darwish

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Columns designed and built according to older standards may be subject to damage due to seismic loading during earthquakes as a result of the lack of shear reinforcement and/or insufficient lap-splice length. An experimental program on the use of ifill RC walls in seismic retrofit of RC frames under cyclic loading was conducted in 2002. The output of this experimental work formed the basis for the validation of a numerical finite element model, in predicting forces and displacements. Subsequently the finite element model was used to perform a parametric analysis on the effects of the thickness, overall reinforcement and concrete …

Lock-Based Cache Coherence Protocol For Chip Multiprocessors, Ihab Ismail Jun 2006

Lock-Based Cache Coherence Protocol For Chip Multiprocessors, Ihab Ismail

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Chip multiprocessor (CMP) is replacing the superscalar processor due to its huge performance gains in terms of processor speed, scalability, power consumption and economical design. Since the CMP consists of multiple processor cores on a single chip usually with share cache resources, process synchronization is an important issue that needs to be dealt with. Synchronization is usually done by the operating system in case of shared memory multiprocessors (SMP). This work studies the effect of performing synchronization by the hardware through its integration with the cache coherence protocol. A novel cache coherence protocol, called Lock-based Cache Coherence Protocol (LCCP) was …

Request Formation By Greek-Cypriot Learners Of English And Native Speakers Of British English: A Cross-Cultural Perspective, Sorayia Fahmy

Archived Theses and Dissertations

In a world where the importance of borders may be declining, knowing what is appropriate behavior for the native speakers of a target language, and being able to apply this “appropriateness”, is of the utmost importance, if learners are to communicate effectively with native speakers (Wolfson, 1983). Second language (L2) cultural values and social relationships, knowing when to talk, what to say, what is conventional in a language, and what is not, how and to what extent to be indirect (Tannen, 1984) are only some of the considerations that learners should acknowledge when performing a speech act in a foreign …

A Comparison Between The West & The East In State Supervised Control Through The Power Of Eminent Domain, Eman Mga Eshmawy

Archived Theses and Dissertations

Eminent domain is a problem that effects both the West and the East. This thesis focuses on blighted homes that are confiscated by government and later used for private if not corporate reasons rather than for public use intentions. The comparison is between the United States and Egypt, and three neighborhoods are discussed from each country separately. The comparison is between two quantitative analyses' between the United States and Egypt showing that this type of eradication of property allows for the authority and power of government to be used negatively towards society. The surveys were collected during approximately a two …
