Evaluating The Effect Of Biochar Soil Amendments On Belonolaimus Longicaudatus Populations Damaging Bermudagrass In South Carolina, Malone Thomason Aug 2023

Evaluating The Effect Of Biochar Soil Amendments On Belonolaimus Longicaudatus Populations Damaging Bermudagrass In South Carolina, Malone Thomason

All Theses

Belonolaimus longicaudatus Rau, (1958) (sting nematode) is a prevalent plant-parasitic nematode found in association with Cynodon spp. (bermudagrass) in South Carolina (Ye et al., 2012). Due to the persistence of the pest, long-term management strategies are necessary. Applications of biochar and compost amendments have reduced nematodes in various crop systems, but research on turfgrass systems is limited. The objectives of the studies were to determine: (1) The effect of topdressing or soil incorporated biochar amendments on sting nematode populations, and (2) The effect of topdressing or soil incorporated amendments on turf quality. A field study was established to examine topdressings …

Development Of Mass Transfer Coefficient Correlations Between Carbon Dioxide And Oxygen For Air-Lift Devices, John Walker Aug 2023

Development Of Mass Transfer Coefficient Correlations Between Carbon Dioxide And Oxygen For Air-Lift Devices, John Walker

All Theses

An experimental method for measurement and determination of carbon dioxide volumetric mass transfer coefficients (kLa) in high pH water was developed. The goal of this research was to develop a relationship between CO2 and O2 volumetric mass transfer coefficients for accurate kLa values in order to meet the needs of carbon capture systems and other industries. Results included dissolved oxygen (DO) and total inorganic carbon (TIC) kLa comparisons, as well as polarographic DO (mg/L) and galvanic DO (mV) kLa correlation. CO2 kLa estimation based on O2 …

Assessing Temperature Differences On A Sample Heated In A Tube Furnace Under Vacuum, Sam A. Muhamed Dec 2018

Assessing Temperature Differences On A Sample Heated In A Tube Furnace Under Vacuum, Sam A. Muhamed

All Theses

Heat treatment is a vital step in various disciplines of research and fabrication. As the level of detail to which materials are scrutinized increase, so does our understanding of their sensitivity to temperature. Many processes rely on precise temperature control so that the end products exhibit properties such as crystallinity, purity and material composition in the desired range. The presence of temperature variations during thermal treatment may vary the quality of the product. In this thesis, the possibility of creating temperature differences on a specimen undergoing thermal treatment in a horizontal tube furnace under vacuum is explored. In a furnace …

Characterizing The Effect Of Suspended Carbon Nanotubes On The Bioavailablility Of Adsorbed Fluoranthene To P. Promelas, Erica N. Linard May 2014

Characterizing The Effect Of Suspended Carbon Nanotubes On The Bioavailablility Of Adsorbed Fluoranthene To P. Promelas, Erica N. Linard

All Theses

The introduction of carbon nanomaterials into the environment has increased exponentially in the last decade, causing environmental as well as health concerns. One concern is the interaction that such nanomaterials have with the biota in the aquatic ecosystem and the direct and indirect toxic effects that may result. Previous research has documented a positive influence of natural organic matter (NOM) on the stability of carbon nanotube (CNTs) suspensions in surface waters. Further, research has quantified the ability of these carbon nanomaterials to adsorb aquatic contaminants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Though both CNTs and PAHs can co-occur in wastewater …
