Discovering Shadows In Hyperbolic Space, Lauren Vowinkel
Discovering Shadows In Hyperbolic Space, Lauren Vowinkel
Academic Festival
Hyperbolic geometry is a type of non-Euclidean geometry that contradicts the fifth axiom of Euclid’s Elements. We will discuss why this axiom was controversial and how hyperbolic space differs from Euclidean space in terms of shadows. The speed of how fast a person walks in terms of their shadow can be calculated using similar triangles or solved as a linear function in Euclidean space. For this type of problem, how fast the shadow is moving in Euclidean space yields a finite number. However, in hyperbolic space, the solution may not be finite.

Student athletes are often subjected to a great deal of pressure as they try to carefully balance academic studies with sporting commitments. The transition from high school to college is a stressful time for any student; however, student athletes are confronted with a comparably unique stress as they are expected to succeed in both academic and sport settings with little time for adjustment. To ease this transition for these young adults, college campuses should implement mental health resources that are specifically catered to student athletes. These resources can be used to specifically help student-athletes manage the unique pressures and stress …

The mind and body are closely connected. Although the amount of research is limited involving this topic, exercise science is advancing rapidly, and a clearer connection is beginning to become apparent. Until the 1960s, exercise science as a field was largely unprecedented. Does psychology have a bigger influence on clinical outcomes than we think? Are there interactions between the physiology of recovery and the thought process? Should physical therapists be required to have some sort of degree or education in psychology to provide the most holistic care? The answers to these questions remain in the air, but with the research …

The Physical And Mental Effects Of Video Gaming On An Individual’S Well-Being, Laura Regan

With video gaming consoles becoming commonplace in homes, parents, scientists, and the media question whether or not gaming is causing adverse effects on adolescents' physical and mental health. With the media repeatedly claiming that video gaming is linked to increased violence and aggression in adolescents, society wonders whether or not these games should be restricted. Despite the media's claims, no scientific study has demonstrated that a link between video gaming and violence exists, and research shows that the use of video games during childhood does not increase the likelihood of one developing aggressive behavior or violent actions. Video gaming can …
