Criteria For Presidential Performance Reviews In Higher Education Institutions In Virginia, Claudia Hudak Clark
Criteria For Presidential Performance Reviews In Higher Education Institutions In Virginia, Claudia Hudak Clark
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The purpose of this study was to investigate current practices by which Virginia college and university boards assess their president. of prime importance to this study was the degree to which criteria used to conduct presidential performance appraisal reflect accepted standards for personnel evaluation in higher education institutions. This study utilized a mixed design. Completed surveys received from 26 Virginia college and university board chairs (67 percent of the 39 schools targeted) were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis Test analyses. Twenty presidents from this sample's institutions were then interviewed to further explain and interpret how the variables …
The Effect Of Seagrass Habitat Fragmentation On Juvenile Blue Crab Survival, Kevin Hovel
The Effect Of Seagrass Habitat Fragmentation On Juvenile Blue Crab Survival, Kevin Hovel
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Habitat fragmentation leads to small, isolated habitat patches in which ecological processes may differ substantially from those in larger, continuous habitats. Seagrass is a structurally complex but fragmented subtidal habitat that serves as a refuge from predation for juveniles of the blue crab, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun. I compared the effects of eelgrass ( Zostera marina L.) patch size and shoot density on juvenile blue crab survival both before (June) and after (September) shoot defoliation and cownose ray disturbance changed eelgrass habitat, and used artificial seagrass to determine the influence of eelgrass patch size on juvenile blue crab survival in the …
Sensory Development In Settlement-Stage Larvae Of Caribbean Labrids And Scarids: A Comparative Study With Implications For Ecomorphology And Life History Strategies, Monica R. Lara
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The sensory capabilities of settlement-stage fishes are unknown but this information is necessary to studies of larval settlement and recruitment. The morphology of the cephalic lateral line, eye and external olfactory organ of thirteen species of settlement-stage Caribbean labroids was described. Scanning electron images of the cephalic lateral line neuromasts, lateral line canals and olfactory epithelia and histological studies of the retinae and morphological measurements of visual acuity were used to assess the level of sensory development attained at settlement. The sensory capabilities of settlement-stage fishes are discussed in relation to the possible cues settlement-stage fishes may be using to …
Distribution, Swimming Physiology, And Swimming Mechanics Of Brief Squid Lolliguncula Brevis, Ian K. Bartol
Distribution, Swimming Physiology, And Swimming Mechanics Of Brief Squid Lolliguncula Brevis, Ian K. Bartol
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Squids are thought to have physiological and locomotive deficiencies that put them at a competitive disadvantage to fishes and exclude them from inshore, highly variable environments that are rich in nektonic fauna. However, brief squid Lolliguncula brevis may be a notable exception. Trawl surveys revealed that L. brevis, particularly juveniles <6 cm dorsal mantle length (DML), are abundant in the Chesapeake Bay, especially when salinity and water temperature are high, and tolerate a wide range of physical conditions relative to other cephalopods. L. brevis is also different from other cephalopods examined previously because its pattern of oxygen consumption as a function of velocity was found to be parabolic and thus similar to aerial flight, and its swimming costs were competitive with ecologically equivalent fishes. Power-speed curves derived from video footage of swimming squid and hydrodynamic force calculations also were parabolic in shape, with high costs both at low and high speeds because of power requirements for lift generation and overcoming drag, respectively. L. brevis employed various behaviors to increase swimming efficiency and compensate for negative buoyancy, such as swimming in various orientations (e.g., arms-first and tail-first), altering angles of attack of the mantle, arms, and funnel, and using fin activity. Fin motion, which could not be characterized exclusively as drag- or lift-based propulsion, was used over 50--95% of the sustained speed range and provided as much as 78% of the vertical and 55% of the horizontal thrust. Small squid (<3.0 cm DML) used different swimming strategies than larger squid possibly to maximize the benefits of toroidal induction, and aerobic efficiency curves indicated that squid 3--5 cm. DML are most efficient. Brief squid also may take advantage of unsteady phenomena, such as attached vortices, for added lift and thrust. Furthermore, an electromyographic study revealed that L. brevis uses different circular muscle layers for various speeds and like fish has muscular "gears", suggesting that there is specialization and efficient use of locomotive muscle in some cephalopods. Therefore, the presumption that squids are inescapably constrained by a second-rate propulsive system and physiological deficiencies is not applicable to L. brevis.
Sediment Dispersal And Sequence Development Along A Tectonically Active Margin: Late Quaternary Evolution Of The Ganges-Brahmaputra River Delta, Steven Lee Goodbred Jr.
Sediment Dispersal And Sequence Development Along A Tectonically Active Margin: Late Quaternary Evolution Of The Ganges-Brahmaputra River Delta, Steven Lee Goodbred Jr.
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Situated in the Bengal Basin, the Ganges-Brahmaputra river delta comprises one of the largest fluviodeltaic systems in the world, comprising ∼ 100,000 km2 of floodplain and delta plain and a 40,000 km2 subaqueous delta on the shelf. Sediment load of the Ganges-Brahmaputra river is 109 t/yr, and seasonal flooding may inundate >70% of the delta during large events. Active tectonic processes have resulted in both uplift and subsidence in this structurally complex region. These general characteristics suggest that the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta represents a heretofore undescribed delta end-member, forming along a high-yield, high-energy, tectonically active margin. to investigate this view, stratigraphic, …

Fashionable Dis-Ease: Promoting Health And Leisure At Saratoga Springs, New York And The Virginia Springs, 1790-1860, Thomas A. Chambers
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Throughout the early years of the American republic and the first half of the nineteenth century, people journeyed from across the nation and Europe to the bubbling mineral springs of upstate New York and western Virginia in search of a medical cure and pleasant company. Promoters lauded the springs for their restorative powers, fashionable clientele, and picturesque scenery. These dubious attributes combined with the profit motive to create one of the earliest and most successful components of the American tourism and leisure industry. Marketing and producing the mineral waters, as well as the spa experience itself, involved innovation, business acumen, …
One Loop Corrections To A Hadronic Model With Vector Mesons, Gary Marcel Prezeau
One Loop Corrections To A Hadronic Model With Vector Mesons, Gary Marcel Prezeau
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The linear sigma model and its extension, Quantum Hadro-dynamics 3 (QHD-III) are discussed. QHD-III is a gauge-invariant model of the strong interaction based on the linear sigma model, which is made locally invariant under SU(2)L x SU(2)R. Parity conservation is imposed. The gauge bosons rho and a1 are made massive via a Higgs mechanism as in the standard model. The low-energy symmetries of QCD, the ability to evaluate corrections coming from meson loops and the derivation of unambiguous conserved currents is used to motivate QHD-III. A renormalized pipi scattering amplitude to 1-loop using Feynman diagrams in the linear sigma-model is …

Geochemistry Of Small Mountainous Rivers Of Papua New Guinea: Local Observations And Global Implications, Megan B. Raymond
Geochemistry Of Small Mountainous Rivers Of Papua New Guinea: Local Observations And Global Implications, Megan B. Raymond
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Small, wet mountainous rivers (runoff > 0.63 m yr" 1 , headwater elevation> 1000 m, basin area < 10,000 km2 ) contribute a disproportionate amount of sediment to the global ocean due to their steep high topography, erosive substrate, and often high precipitation. Scattered data have suggested a slight, but statistically insignificant, inverse relationship between total dissolved solid (TDS) yield (T km-2 yr-1 ) and basin area, but small to very small rivers (basin areas< 10,000 km2 ) have been poorly documented. To fill this data gap, as well as to elucidate possible links between weathering and basin hydrology, nine small wet mountainous rivers, basin areas 22 km2-2300 km2 , were sampled in late May 1997 in northeastern Papua New Guinea. TDS concentrations ranged from 75 to 148 mg L-1 , with no correlation to watershed area. The dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) values were low, with a mean DOC value of 135 f.Lmol L-1 ; POC values were lower, averaging 3lf.Lmol L- 1 • TDS data, combined with large wet mountainous river TDS data, demonstrate a significant inverse relationship between TDS yield and basin area. As a result, small wet mountainous rivers contribute a disproportionate amount of TDS, and have the highest TDS yields of any class of river. This observation is attributed to the high runoff of the sampled rivers (-2m yr-1 ), in addition to high rates of chemical weathering, which is facilitated by the erosive substrate and high rates of organic matter remineralization.
Correlates Of The Joint Attention Disturbance In Autism, Linda Sue Bourdon
Correlates Of The Joint Attention Disturbance In Autism, Linda Sue Bourdon
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Deficits in joint attention, imitation, and pretense are believed to contribute to subsequent difficulty in the development of a theory of mind in children with autism (Baron-Cohen, 1991; Mundy, 1995). Joint attention and other early social skills of children with autism (34 male, 4 female; ages 4 to 18 years) were correlated with measures of nonverbal cognitive ability (Leiter International Performance Scale), receptive and expressive language skills (Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised and Expressive One-Word Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised), and the severity of autism (Childhood Autism Rating Scale) to gain a better understanding of these developmental relationships. Joint attention and other early …
Fine-Scale Strata Formation In Biologically And Physically Dominated Estuarine Systems Within The Lower Chesapeake And York River Subestuary, Timothy M. Dellapenna
Fine-Scale Strata Formation In Biologically And Physically Dominated Estuarine Systems Within The Lower Chesapeake And York River Subestuary, Timothy M. Dellapenna
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
To investigate the relationship between biological and physical mixing in forming strata, the lower mainstem of Chesapeake Bay has been contrasted with the York River Subestuary. By using radioisotope profiles from sediment cores, comparisons are made in terms of depth and rate of sediment mixing, deposition and accretion. Within the lower Chesapeake Bay two sites were selected as biologically dominated, both are located within the bay stem plains and are characterized by muddy sand and an abundance of large, deep-dwelling organisms. X-radiographs indicate complete biological reworking of sediments. 210Pb profiles reveal low sediment accretion rates within the mainstem sites ( …

Bacterial Dynamics And Community Structure In The York River Estuary, Gary Edward Schultz Jr
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
Bacterial community dynamics were investigated over seasonal and basin scales within the York River, VA, estuary. Various parameters characterizing bacterioplankton dynamics were measured weekly at a single station (March 1996 through May 1997) and monthly at six stations (June 1996 through May 1997) spanning the entire salinity gradient (0 - ca. 20 psu over 60 km). Bacterial abundance and production were found to be high throughout the estuary. Bacterial abundance ranged from 4.4 x 108 to 1.3 x 1010 cells-liter-1Incorporation of 3H-thymidine ranged from 10 to 863 pmol-liter-1-hr-1 while 3H-leucine incorporation rates ranged from 25 to 1963 pmol-liter -1-hr-1. Aspects Of The Biology Of Sea Turtles In The Mid-Atlantic Bight, William C. Coles
Aspects Of The Biology Of Sea Turtles In The Mid-Atlantic Bight, William C. Coles
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
I present here an investigation of several aspects of the biology of sea turtles in the mid-Atlantic Bight. During 19 years of data collection, included in this study, strandings have increased for all species of sea turtles in Virginia. Most sea turtle strandings occurred during the spring when juvenile turtles migrate into the Bay (Kemp's ridleys had a second significant stranding peak, during fall migration) along the Southern Bay and Virginia Beach Oceanfront. Sea turtles utilize the Chesapeake Bay as a feeding area when the water temperature approaches 20??C, and they leave after the water temperature drops below 20??C. Although …
Nitrate Reduction At The Groundwater - Salt Marsh Interface, Craig -1967 Tobias
Nitrate Reduction At The Groundwater - Salt Marsh Interface, Craig -1967 Tobias
Dissertations, Theses, and Masters Projects
The influence of groundwater discharge on the hydrology and biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen in a fringing intertidal wetland was studied by characterizing groundwater discharge, determining N-cycling rates in cores, and examining nitrate reduction in situ using 15N enrichment and natural gradient tracer techniques. Groundwater discharge was estimated by three independent methods: Darcy's Law, a water/salt mass balance, and a subsurface tracer test. Seasonal patterns of discharge predicted by Darcy's Law and the mass balance were similar. Discharge maxima and minima occurred in April and September, respectively. The water/salt mass balance provided the more reasonable estimate of groundwater flux at high …
