Feasibility Of Commercial Fishing Operations In The Mid-Atlantic Continental Slope, Philip W. Cahill, P. Ronald Grulich, James A. Colvocoresses May 1984

Feasibility Of Commercial Fishing Operations In The Mid-Atlantic Continental Slope, Philip W. Cahill, P. Ronald Grulich, James A. Colvocoresses

Reports

The objective of the project was to test the feasibility of conducting commercial trawling operations in the slope waters ( 100 fm-300 fm) adjacent to the traditional fishing areas on the continental shelf in the Mid-Atlantic Bight. This was to be accomplished by developing a fishing strategy that would be structured around existing information on stock abundance, type and location and implementing the fishing strategy by procuring a lease on a commercial fishing vessel that would be suitable for slope trawling. The implementation of fishery operations would be the primary goal of the project and every effort would be made …

Summary Report On The Calibration Of The Water Quality Models Of The Chesapeake Bay System, H. S. Chen, Paul V. Hyer, Y. Unkulvasapaul, Bruce Neilson Mar 1984

Summary Report On The Calibration Of The Water Quality Models Of The Chesapeake Bay System, H. S. Chen, Paul V. Hyer, Y. Unkulvasapaul, Bruce Neilson

Reports

The intended use of the water quality model was to predict the levels of important water quality parameters. in particular the dissolved oxygen levels and the algal populations. for alternative sets of nutrient loadings. The goals of the present modelling study were to apply appropriate models to the Chesapeake Bay system. to adjust the models so that they accurately simulated conditions in the prototype and to use those models to predict conditions under a number of nutrient loading scenarios. This report provides a summary of the work done to satisfy the first two of those three objectives.

Vegetative Erosion Control Project : Final Report, C. Scott Hardaway Jr., George Thomas, Andrew W. Zacherle, B. Keith Fowler

Reports

The Vegetative Erosion Control (VEC) project is a four-year study with coordinated efforts by the Virginia Soil and Water Conservation Commmission (VS&WCC) through their Shoreline Erosion Advisory Service (SEAS), the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) and the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS). Initial funding was appropriated in 1980 following the recommendation of the Coastal Erosion Abatement Commission and contracted out to the SCS and VIMS by the VS&WCC, the lead agency. (...)

The purpose of the VEC project is to supplement previous research with detailed site analysis of the early stages of marsh development and to more precisely define the …

Striped Bass Research, Virginia - Completion Report 1984, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science Jan 1984

Striped Bass Research, Virginia - Completion Report 1984, Virginia Institute Of Marine Science

Reports

The research reported herein is directly in response to priorities established in the "Action Plan" of the Emergency Striped Bass Study (the Chafee Amendment (PL 96-118) of the Anadromous Fish Conservation Act (PL 89-304)). The Amendment was the result of a decline in striped bass landings along the Atlantic Coast that began in the mid-1970's. The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) had previously conducted a juvenile striped bass seining program from 1967 through 1973 which was discontinued at that point due to a loss of funding. The program was reinstated in 1980 with funding from the National Marine Fisheries …

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1983 Annual Summary, James Whitcomb Jan 1984

Oyster Spatfall In Virginia Rivers: 1983 Annual Summary, James Whitcomb

Reports

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) conducts weekly surveys from June through early October to obtain oyster spatfall information. Spat counts are made on oyster shells strung on wire and suspended from stakes on public and private beds. The number of spat on shells are counted each week of ~:he spawning season to determine the potential of a particular area for receiving a strike and to predict the most likely period tile strikes will occur. A moderate or heavy strike on shellstrings usually indicates a significant strike on exposed bottom clutch. This is especially true for clutch planted a …

Hydrodynamic Aspects Of Shark Scales, William G. Raschi, John A. Musick Jan 1984

Hydrodynamic Aspects Of Shark Scales, William G. Raschi, John A. Musick

Reports

The energetics of fish locomotion depends on a balance between thrust and drag. The interest stimulated by "Gray's Paradox", that is the seeming lack of sufficient power to overcome many of the estimated values of drag, has resulted in the delineation of a number of potential drag reducing mechanisms (Webb, 1975). Of particular interest is a variety of structural mechanisms, such as scombroid scale corselets (Walters, 1962) and scale ctenii (Burdak, 1969; Bone, 1972), which increase surface roughness and thereby alter boundary layer characteristics. Elasmobranch placoid scales, or dermal denticles, may perform such a function. Bone and Howarth (1966) have …

A Study Of Long-Term Environmental Fluctuations In The Chesapeake Bay Region, Reidar S. Leinebo, David A. Evans

Reports

A time series of monthly mean values of temperature measurements (1952-1981) for Gloucester Point, Virginia, U.S.A. and Vardo In Northern Norway are described and the results of an eigenfunction analysis are presented. Seasonal, year-to-year and long term changes of salinlty measurements (1960-1977) for Gloucester Point and monthly mean stream-flow values (1951-1982) are also described. Commerclal Catch data from Virginia for menhaden, bluefish and Atlantic croaker shows reasonable correlation with cllmatlc changes.

The time around 1965 was a cold period with high sallnlty and low streamflow. The same period was also cold In Northern Norway (Europe). Around 1974 was a period …

Mortality And Behavior Of Sea Turtles In The Chesapeake Bay : Summary Report For 1979 Through 1983, John A. Musick, Richard A. Byles, Ruthellen Klinger, Sarah A. Bellmund

Reports

Research on the populations of juvenile sea turtles utilize the Chesapeake Bay as a summer foraging area has been pursued by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) since 1979. The largest part of the funding for our studies has come from National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) in the form of· student fellowship grants with recent substantial contributions also by the Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries Commission and VIMS. This report is a summary of studies carried out through 1983. It consists of sections analyzing telemetry, conventional tagging, mortalities, fishing conflicts, population description and abundance.

Trace Organic Analyses Of Effluent Waters From A Model Slurry Pipeline Carrying Appalachian Bituminous Coal : Final Report, P. O. Defur, W. G. Macintyre Jan 1984

Trace Organic Analyses Of Effluent Waters From A Model Slurry Pipeline Carrying Appalachian Bituminous Coal : Final Report, P. O. Defur, W. G. Macintyre

Reports

Effluent waters from a model coal slurry pipeline have been analyzed for trace dissolved organic compounds. The model pipeline was operated under conditions simulating those proposed for a slurry pipeline from the region of Bristol to Hampton Roads, Virginia. Acidic, neutral and basic organic compounds in the separated waters were determined. Concentrations of individual compounds detected were generally less than 0.5 ppb and never exceeded 6 ppb. Adsorption experiments using coal slurry sorbents indicate that coal particles act as sorbing surfaces under coal slurry pipeline transport conditions.
