Plankton biomass, material fluxes, e.g. 14C uptake, and specific growth rates are related quantities. In the course of comparing various methods of measuring these properties in September 1982 off Oahu, Hawaii, we found specific growth rates of 1–2·d−1. Such rates approach the maximum expected values observed in laboratory cultures.

Trajectories Of An Atomic Electron In A Magnetic Field, John B. Delos, Stephen Knudson, D. W. Noid
Trajectories Of An Atomic Electron In A Magnetic Field, John B. Delos, Stephen Knudson, D. W. Noid
Arts & Sciences Articles
Classical trajectories of an atomic electron in a magnetic field are calculated for various values of the field strength B. Qualitative properties of these trajectories are examined. With use of a scaling law, it is shown that the equations of motion can be written in a form such that they depend upon only one parameter, which may be regarded as a reduced angular momentum (proportional to LzB13). For small values of this parameter there is an "elliptical regime" in which the trajectory may be regarded as a Kepler ellipse with orbital parameters that evolve slowly in time. For large values …

Feasibility Of Commercial Fishing Operations In The Mid-Atlantic Continental Slope, Philip W. Cahill, P. Ronald Grulich, James A. Colvocoresses
Feasibility Of Commercial Fishing Operations In The Mid-Atlantic Continental Slope, Philip W. Cahill, P. Ronald Grulich, James A. Colvocoresses
Reports
The objective of the project was to test the feasibility of conducting commercial trawling operations in the slope waters ( 100 fm-300 fm) adjacent to the traditional fishing areas on the continental shelf in the Mid-Atlantic Bight. This was to be accomplished by developing a fishing strategy that would be structured around existing information on stock abundance, type and location and implementing the fishing strategy by procuring a lease on a commercial fishing vessel that would be suitable for slope trawling. The implementation of fishery operations would be the primary goal of the project and every effort would be made …

Summary Report On The Calibration Of The Water Quality Models Of The Chesapeake Bay System, H. S. Chen, Paul V. Hyer, Y. Unkulvasapaul, Bruce Neilson
Reports
The intended use of the water quality model was to predict the levels of important water quality parameters. in particular the dissolved oxygen levels and the algal populations. for alternative sets of nutrient loadings. The goals of the present modelling study were to apply appropriate models to the Chesapeake Bay system. to adjust the models so that they accurately simulated conditions in the prototype and to use those models to predict conditions under a number of nutrient loading scenarios. This report provides a summary of the work done to satisfy the first two of those three objectives.
Construction Of A Multidimensional Potential Energy Surface From An Energy Spectrum, Robert Leonard Waterland, John B. Delos
Construction Of A Multidimensional Potential Energy Surface From An Energy Spectrum, Robert Leonard Waterland, John B. Delos
Arts & Sciences Articles
A method for the systematic construction of a multidimensional potential energy surface from an energy spectrum is presented. We show that if the Hamiltonian and the energy spectrum satisfy certain conditions then there is an inversion technique which gives a potential energy function from the spectrum. The method proceeds via a sequence of canonical transformations and leads to a potential energy which is symmetric in all its variables. We test the procedure for one‐ and two‐dimensional examples and show that it gives reasonable results. However, the method does not give a unique result and we discuss two types of nonuniqueness …

Electron Detachment In Negative-Ion Collisions. I. Time-Dependent Theory And Models For A Propagator, T. S. Wang, John B. Delos
Arts & Sciences Articles
A theory of electron detachment in slow collisions of negative ions with atoms is developed. The theory is based on assumptions that are similar to, but more general than, the assumptions made in earlier papers: The motion of the nuclei is described semiclassically, the electronic wave function is expanded in a partially diabatic basis that includes a discrete state and a continuum, and certain couplings are assumed to be small. With such assumptions the Schrödinger equation is reduced to a nondenumerably infinite set of coupled differential equations, and then to a single integro-differential equation (an equation with "memory"). It is …
