A Preliminary Analysis Of Health Lifestyles Between International Students And American Students At Western Kentucky University, Mei Zhu

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this research was to assess the lifestyle of international students at Western Kentucky University (WKU) and to compare the lifestyles of international and American students and subgroups of international students. The Lifestyle Questionnaire (LSQ), was a 26-item personal health lifestyle test, which had six sections (nutrition, exercise, smoking, alcohol and drugs, safety, and stress). The test-retest reliability of LSQ was evaluated by Pearson Correlation Coefficient (r) and was .89. During October and November 1997, 55 international students and 64 American students at WKU finished the LSQ. Significant differences were found between the American student group and the …

Determinants Of Use Of Health Care By Black Males, Bennie Shobe

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this research was to find the differences in the use of medical care between black males and white males and between young black males and older black males. A combination of the conflict perspective, formal-rationality, sick roles, and social learning perspective was used to understand what black males think about using medical care. Secondary analysis was performed on data from the 1992 National Health Interview Survey. ANOVA, t tests, correlation analyses, and multiple regressions were performed to determine the differences in the use of medical care and what factors influenced visiting a doctor. Results indicate no difference …

Neoliberalism And Nafta: A Case Study Of The Coffee Commodity System And Huatusco, Veracruz, Mexico, Chad Gesser Jul 1997

Neoliberalism And Nafta: A Case Study Of The Coffee Commodity System And Huatusco, Veracruz, Mexico, Chad Gesser

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In the Western Hemisphere global capitalism and regional trading blocks have become more pronounced with the passing of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). I examine the impacts of the neoliberal changes prior to and after the implementation of NAFTA in the community of Huatusco, Veracruz, Mexico. World-systems analysis is the theoretical outline. The global commodity chains approach is used to examine the coffee commodity system that links the United States and Mexico. This thesis includes qualitative and quantitative data that were developed from fieldwork research in Mexico and in the community. The qualitative data suggest that the impacts …

Health Risk Behaviors In Rural Adolescents At Two High Schools Located In One Kentucky County, Melinda Hann Jun 1997

Health Risk Behaviors In Rural Adolescents At Two High Schools Located In One Kentucky County, Melinda Hann

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Many adolescents throughout the United States practice health risk behaviors that place them at risk for serious health problems. Despite the high incidence of reported adolescent health risk behaviors, no reports have been published to document the current risk to rural adolescents in individual counties of Kentucky. The purpose of this retrospective descriptive study was to identify the health risk behaviors of rural adolescents from two high schools in one county in Kentucky and to compare the two schools to determine if the health risk behaviors of these students were the same or different. The study was accomplished through analysis …

Development Of Methods For The Determination Of Major And Minor Elements And Hydrocarbon Residues In Solid Combustion Products, Xiaoliu Chi May 1997

Development Of Methods For The Determination Of Major And Minor Elements And Hydrocarbon Residues In Solid Combustion Products, Xiaoliu Chi

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Methods for the determination of inorganic constituents in coal fly ash by glow discharge spectrometry (GDS) and for the extraction of the organic compounds from coal and ash by supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) at temperatures below 150°C are reviewed. The inorganic elements studied included Al, Ca, C, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, P, S, Si and Ti. The organic compounds were measured by weight loss of the sample. The goal of this research was to find easier and faster ways to measure the concentration of inorganic elements in coal ash and to measure extractability of the coal itself, to make coal …

The Effects Of Hydrilla Infestation On Selected Wintering Waterfowl: Santee Copper Lake System, South Carolina, William Davis May 1997

The Effects Of Hydrilla Infestation On Selected Wintering Waterfowl: Santee Copper Lake System, South Carolina, William Davis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Hydrilla is an exotic aquatic weed that was introduced into Florida in the 1950's. Since that time it has spread rapidly from lake to lake throughout the southeast and beyond. The Santee Cooper lake system in eastern South Carolina was infested with the weed in the early 1980's. Since that time lake managers have sought ways to eliminate the aquatic plant and have succeeded to a great extent through the use of sterile grass carp as a biological control agent. This paper, however, contains evidence to support the view that hydrilla is actually a beneficial habitat for many species on …

Evaluation Of Continuous Flow Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Waste, Stephanie Rivard May 1997

Evaluation Of Continuous Flow Constructed Wetlands Treating Swine Waste, Stephanie Rivard

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The ability for wetlands to purify contaminated water is not a new concept. Natural wetlands have been cleansing water within our environment for ages. After studying the process of natural wetlands the same concept was applied to municipal waste. It is the success of constructed wetlands treating municipal waste that created the new idea for the application of a wetland system to treat wastewater from livestock facilities. Through proper design and management, constructed wetlands may be useful for reducing the nutrient concentration of waste (Rieck el al., 1996). Taking into consideration the higher nutrient loads of livestock waste, the same …

College Students And Drug Use: A Further Analysis Of Peer Cluster Theory, Christopher Rose May 1997

College Students And Drug Use: A Further Analysis Of Peer Cluster Theory, Christopher Rose

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The purpose of this study was to test the premise of peer cluster theory which suggests that individual drug use is primarily the result of psychosocial characteristics that influence one's peer associations which, in turn, directly influences individual drug use. Using the results of a 1996 drug and alcohol survey of 1312 Western Kentucky University college students, path analysis was used to measure the influence of seven of Beauvais and Oetting's (1986) psychosocial characteristics (sex, religious importance, parental attitudes about the use of alcohol, family use of alcohol and/or drugs, success in school, age of first use, and peer associations) …

A Study Of Combustion Profiles Of Co-Fired Coal/Biomass/Limestone Samples In A Fluidized Bed Combustor, Beverly Campbell May 1997

A Study Of Combustion Profiles Of Co-Fired Coal/Biomass/Limestone Samples In A Fluidized Bed Combustor, Beverly Campbell

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Concerns over declining landfill space and a renewed interest in waste-toenergy technologies have increased the possibilities of co-firing different types of fuels in atmospheric fluidized bed combustion systems. The laboratory sized atmospheric fluidized bed combustor (AFBC) at Western Kentucky University was designed to serve as a highly flexible research and development facility to gain operating experience, evaluate combustion performance, and estimate the effect of flue gas emissions on the atmosphere. The operating conditions for the AFBC system are similar to those used at the TVA 160-MW AFBC Pilot Plant located near Paducah, Kentucky. AFBC systems are ideal for co-firing because …

"Indignities, Wrongs, And Outrages": The Home Front In Kentucky During The Civil War, Scott Lucas May 1997

"Indignities, Wrongs, And Outrages": The Home Front In Kentucky During The Civil War, Scott Lucas

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

In the 1920s historians such as James Harvey Robinson and Arthur Schlesinger, Sr., attempted to examine historical topics using new methodology. Writing "New Social History," they endeavored to emphasize society, culture, and the common people rather than great men and strictly political events. Since the 1980s historians have exhibited new interest in the importance of social history. "Indignities, Wrongs, and Outrages: The Homefront In Kentucky During The Civil War" attempts to apply the methods of the "new social historians" to the era of the American Civil War, centering on the homefront by examining in detail its impact on the everyday …

"Does Your Faith In God And Country Need A Boost?" Reflections Of Idealism And Identity And The Art Of Bill John Roth, Steven Warrick May 1997

"Does Your Faith In God And Country Need A Boost?" Reflections Of Idealism And Identity And The Art Of Bill John Roth, Steven Warrick

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The life and art of Bill John Roth offer a paradox to the study of folklore and folk art. The personal and public nature of Bill's art is exemplified through his mural Geographic Hieroglyphics In God's Own Handwriting. On the surface the art and artist are seemingly detached from the community, but upon closer investigation this is not the case. I have explored the notion of "outsider" art, the problems associated with artistic interpretation and the difficulties of labelling artists according to academic and elitist standards. Thus the contextual background of the artist and community are important aspects of this …
