The purpose of this in vitro agar-diffusion study was to evaluate the effect on the antimicrobial efficacy of Hoshino's triple antibiotic paste when 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate is substituted for the traditional propylene glycol and macrogol ointment carrier solution. Ciprofloxacin (200 mg), metronidazole (500 mg), and minocycline (100 mg), were mixed with either chlorhexidine or a 1:1 combination of propylene glycol and macrogol ointment. Seven microorganisms, including: E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, E. faecalis, S. sanguis, F. nucleatum, and C. albicans, were incubated and plated onto triplicate blood agar plates. This in vitro study investigates the effect of cannula design on the amount of apically extruded sodium hypochlorite during non surgical root canal therapy. Ten human, extracted, single canal teeth were decoronated and instrumented and randomly assigned to two different treatment groups BO (blown out apices) and NBO (non-blown out apices). Three different cannula designs (Max-i-Probe, Pro-Rinse, Monoject) were compared in respect to the amount of extruded root canal irrigant yielded beyond the root apex. Fifty-two rectangular specimens were fabricated from high impact denture acrylic resin (Lucitone 199). Forty specimens contain 2.00 mm height Locator attachment titanium denture caps with black processing males, 12 specimens did not include the denture cap. Objectives. To evaluate the correction obtained from the Forsus Fatigue Resistant (FRD) device and orthodontic appliances compared to an untreated control group. Methods. Twenty four patients were treated with the Forsus FRD and fixed orthodontic appliances and were compared to twenty two untreated control patients who were matched in age, sex and craniofacial morphology. Lateral Cephalograms were taken before treatment (T1) and after Forsus FRD and removal of orthodontic appliances (T2). Results. Statistically significant differences were found for 12 of the 29 variables measured. To evaluate changes to the WALA Ridge when subjected to orthodontic treatment using customized WALA Ridge archwires and preformed archwires, and ascertain trends within the United States amongst practicing orthodontists regarding arch form selection. The difficulty with three-dimensional analyses remains with the myriad of data that is possible to derive from a volume. The goal of this study is to report 3D changes in the temporomandibular joint in a reliable and quantifiable way. The approach included plotting specific referents on the mandibular condyle and tracking them in magnitude (mm) and direction (°) on a reference plane after superimposing the cone beams three-dimensionally on the inferior alveolar nerve canal and the lower contour of the third molar tooth germ. Research suggests mood can influence recall of emotionally-relevant information. Yet, despite multiple studies examining the association of anxiety and exaggerated prediction and recall of dental pain, the influence of other moods on prediction and recall of dental pain remains poorly investigated. Further, the potential moderation and mediation effects for dental fear, fear of pain, and mood state have not been properly researched. The present study investigated variables associated with predicted pain (pain expected during the dental procedure) and recalled pain in oral surgery patients. The purpose of this in-vitro study was to compare the influence of the side vent length on flexural fatigue and subsequent failure of three endodontic irrigating needles. Twenty ProRinse Endodontic Irrigation Probes, twenty-three Max-i-Probes, and twenty Vista-Probe Irrigating Tips were used in this study. All three irrigating needles are 30-gauge, have a side-vented port, and are safe-ended. After all side vent lengths were measured and recorded, each needle was subjected to flexing cycles of 30° until flexural fatigue occurred and the instrument permanently failed. Nickel-titanium rotary (NTR) files have been used in endodontic therapy to efficiently clean and shape root canals since the early 1990's. These files are the single most expensive disposable clinical supply used in non-surgical endodontics. Patients with a skeletal Class III malocclusion may have one of the following conditions: midface deficiency and/or mandibular hypertrophy/prognathism. If modification of the skeletal Class III growth pattern is not effectively accomplished at an early age via maxillary protraction, then orthognathic surgery would be required to help correct the skeletal Class III malocclusion. Some of the more serious risks associated with orthognathic surgery include parasthesia, bone and tissue necrosis, and possibly death. The purpose of this study was to compare the dye leakage of an MTA apical barrier after immediate placement, 1 hour, 4 hours, 24 hours, and 1 week of setting time. One hundred twenty single-rooted extracted teeth were accessed and the apical three millimeters resected. The teeth were instrumented with 0.06 tapered Brasseler EndoSequence series rotary instruments to the apex. Recently, there has been a growing number of resin endodontic sealers with multiple studies looking at leakage and very few investigating their solubility. Two analyses using soft tissue landmarks (Arnett's Soft Tissue Cephalometric Analysis, STCA and Andrews' Six Elements Diagnostic System, 6E) were compared for their ability to generate esthetic profiles in lateral repose and smiling. Photographs of 23 subjects were digitally altered to represent the STCA and 6E surgical predictions and presented to panels of professionals and lay people for rating on a visual analog scale (0-50). Professionals and lay people agreed that the 6E simulated profiles were significantly preferred to the Arnett simulated profiles in both smiling and repose. This study compared the density of gutta percha when using cold lateral condensation (CLC) and continuous wave of condensation (CWC) under varying temperature and plugger depths. Seventy acrylic blocks were instrumented. The blocks were weighed and assigned to seven groups. Group 1 was obturated with CLC. The remaining six groups were obturated with CWC. Groups 2-4 were obturated by advancing the plugger to 3 mm short of the working length at 100°C, 200°C, and 300°C, respectively, and then backfilled. In groups 5-7 the plugger was advanced to 5 mm short of working length. The blocks were weighed again after obturation. …

Objectives. LumenIQ's ImageIQ software enhances conventional radiographs by adding 3-D depth. This study evaluated whether a preference exists for ImageIQ format versus conventional radiographs, determined whether ImageIQ format is as sensitive as 2-D radiographs when detecting existing periodontal defects and simulated periodontal defects. Methods. 34 dental practitioners compared 12 radiographic cases with ImagelQ format. A panel of evaluators classified periodontal defects from 2-D radiographs and ImageIQ images. Simulated periodontal defects were radiographed with various radiographic variables altered, converted to ImageIQ 3-D format, and measured to evaluate the ImageIQ format compared to the 2-D control. The in vitro study utilized 90 extracted premolars. The teeth were divided into six groups. In the first three groups brackets were bonded with Concise, Transbond XT, or APC Plus and debonded 30 minutes after bonding. In the second three groups, brackets were bonded with Concise, Transbond XT, or Concise and debonded after thermocycling. The in vivo study consisted of 31 patients and a split arch technique was utilized. Adhesives used were APC Plus and Transbond XT. Perforations occurring during post placement are problematic. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is slow to set. A trial demonstrated that CaCl2 accelerated the set of Portland cement. Forty single-rooted teeth were sectioned, treated with endodontic therapy and post prepared. The first group contained 20 teeth, evaluated at 72 hours. MTA, Portland cement with 10% CaCl2, 15% CaCl2 and zinc phosphate were used as post cements. The second group was evaluated at 28 days. The posts were cemented with either MTA or zinc phosphate. Pain is often associated with teeth that need endodontic therapy. This pain results from inflammation. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs are useful in managing acute post-operative dental pain. NSAIDS specific for only blocking the COX-2 enzyme cause less stomach irritation and bleeding. The purpose of this clinical study was to determine if pre-operative administration of valdecoxib would significantly reduce post-endodontic pain, when compared to ibuprofen. The purpose of this study was to assess the degree to which oral health values affect attendance patterns in a group of West Virginia patients with high dental fear. Participants were selected from 585 patients who presented to an oral diagnosis clinic at the West Virginia University School of Dentistry for either emergency services or to be screened for regular patient status. The relationship between nasal airway resistance and rapid palatal expansion remains controversial. The purpose of this study is to determine the anatomical changes within the nasal cavity following expansion using conventional tomography. Nineteen patients (ages 8--15) were included in the study. Tomograms were taken before expansion, immediately after expansion, and three months later. Areas for the left and right anterior, middle and posterior nasal cavity and total volume were calculated using computer software (AutoCAD LT 2005). Data was analyzed using paired t-tests.
