Art, Advertising, And Everything Else., Maria Esparza

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

I always wanted to "do" advertising ever since I was five years old. I'd sit in front of the TV on Saturday morning and edit the toy commercials in my head. I wasn't sure what I was doing--but I knew it was better than what was on TV.

Regular education teachers were being asked to educate students who are deaf and hard of hearing with those who have no hearing difficulty.

The Development And Writing Of A Children's Story To Promote An Awareness Of Deaf Culture And American Sign Language, Blaine J. Taylor May 1993

The Development And Writing Of A Children's Story To Promote An Awareness Of Deaf Culture And American Sign Language, Blaine J. Taylor

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Many advocates of the deaf fear that a whole generation of deaf children will be lost emotionally. socially. and educationally. This fear stems from the fact that many children who are deaf are not having their linguistic. sociocultural. and communicative needs met at home or at school (King, 1993). Their needs are not met primarily for three reasons. First. the hearing culture is often inaccessible to them because they do not understand most of the spoken language around them. When children lack the communicative abilities to interact with the hearing culture. they can not be expected to be knowledgeable of …

Analysis Of Cutthroat Flume Discharge Ratings, Liyan Ren May 1993

Analysis Of Cutthroat Flume Discharge Ratings, Liyan Ren

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Sixteeen sets of original laboratory data collected by many investigators for various Cutthroat flume sizes are thoroughly reviewed and organized. Best-fit discharge parameters are obtained by performing the free-flow analysis and the submerged-flow analysis. Then, the transition submergence can be calculated. Afterwards, the unified free-flow and submerged-flow discharge parameters are developed for each flume size in order to generalize the calibrations for Cutthroat flumes. This is a very tedious process requiring a trial-and-error approach. Finally, comparisons are made of the measured laboratory discharges with the predicted discharges for both free flow and submerged flow using both the best-fit and the …

Photo Manipulation And Its Effect On Future Credibility Of Documentary Photojournalism, Douglas M. Lind May 1993

Photo Manipulation And Its Effect On Future Credibility Of Documentary Photojournalism, Douglas M. Lind

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

With today's increased use of computers and computer technology in newspaper photo departments, digitally transmitted and managed images are quickly becoming standard practice. In one sense, this is a tremendous boon for the industry. On the other hand, the electronic age is potentially harmful to the documentary nature of photojournalism. Unlike advertising or fine art photography, documentary photojournalism is a record, a visual witness if you will, of actual events and happenings. People consider such photos as being a view of the facts.

With the new technology comes the ability to change those facts, to create a lie. Therein rests …

Jet Velocity Dissipation And Modelling With Aeration, Stephen J. Schlenker May 1993

Jet Velocity Dissipation And Modelling With Aeration, Stephen J. Schlenker

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The effects of natural aeration and fall height upon velocity dissipation and modelling were studied. Underwater velocities and void ratios (proportion of air volume to total volume) were measured along the jet centerline at various depths in the receiving pool under 1- and 2-inch diameter vertical circular free-falling jets. Maximum air bubble penetration depths were also measured. In the tests, the nozzle velocities were designed so that the two differently sized models would have equivalent Froude numbers for direct comparison of respective underwater parameters. Air entrainment-the natural development of air bubbles within a pool receiving a free-falling jet-causes voids to …

Gregarious Behavior In Large Mammals: Modeling, Methodology, And Application, Thomas L. Morton May 1993

Gregarious Behavior In Large Mammals: Modeling, Methodology, And Application, Thomas L. Morton

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Gregarious behavior of ungulates was considered in four ways. The first concern was W. D. Hamilton's hypothesis that a simple movement rule could reduce predation risk and encourage grouping behavior. Simulations showed little effect of this nearest-neighbor rule on predation risk. Similar, more complicated rules reduced predation risk by up to two thirds.

The second focus was on the accuracy of ground observers in diagramming individual animal locations in small herds of elk. A remotely controlled airplane was used to photograph the herds from above. A substantial distance discrepancy was found between "true" and "observed" animal locations. This discrepancy increased …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Cryptosporidium parvum is a coccidian protozoan that colonizes epithelial cells lining respiratory and digestive tracts of animals and humans. Cryptosporidiosis is a well-recognized zoonotic disease infecting primarily neonates and immunocompromised hosts, including human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients. Clinical disease is manifested as a chronic diarrheal illness that is self-limiting in immunocompetent hosts and prolonged and often life-threatening in hosts with compromised immune systems. The lack of a suitable small animal model for screening anti-cryptosporidial drugs and for examining the pathogenicity and immunobiology of chronic cryptosporidosis was the impetus for this research effort.

The objectives of the present study were three-fold: to …

Can Duration -- Interest Rate Risk -- And Convexity Explain The Fractional Price Change And Market Risk Of Equities?, David L. Cheney

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

In the last two decades, duration analysis has been largely applied to fixed-income securities. However, since rising and falling interest rates have been determined to be a major cause of stock price movements, equity duration has received a great deal of attention.

The duration of an equity is a measure of its interest rate risk. Duration is the sensitivity of the price of an equity with respect to the interest rate. Convexity is the sensitivity of duration with respect to the interest rate.

The analysis revealed that the fractional price change and market risk of equities can be explained by …

A Comparison Of Models To Forecast Annual Average Potato Prices In Utah, Glade R. Erikson May 1993

A Comparison Of Models To Forecast Annual Average Potato Prices In Utah, Glade R. Erikson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Potatoes are a capital-intensive crop. A farmer who is considering expanding his potato acreage must carefully consider revenue requirements to offset the high costs of raising the crop. A method to forecast annual farm potato prices would be useful not only to the farmer, who is considering potato acreage expansion (or contraction), but also to the potato buyers.

Seven forecasting models were considered: (1) a simultaneous equation model (with five equations); (2) a Box-Jenkins type ARIMA model; (3) an exponential smoothing model; (4) a moving-average model; (5) a trend model; (6) an "opposite" model; and (7) a current, or naive, …

Integration Of Short-Run Exchange Rate Dynamics With Long-Run Equilibrium: An Empirical Analysis, Sugata Biswas May 1993

Integration Of Short-Run Exchange Rate Dynamics With Long-Run Equilibrium: An Empirical Analysis, Sugata Biswas

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigates the linkage between long-run and short-run dynamics of exchange rate determination for the German mark/U.S. dollar quarterly rate for the period 1973-1990. Earlier investigations failed to explicitly take into account the possible nonstationarity of the data set they were using. This study continues the work performed in this area by applying modern econometric techniques to empirical tests of the Dornbusch model. In essence, this study revives the monetary model and determines if the empirical analysis using the German/U.S. case derives elements which are compatible with the monetary theory of exchange rate determination.
