A History Of The Big Trees And Avery School Districts, 1881-1940, David E. Gano

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The history of a school district is usually presented as a local history. This type of history is very thorough in naming names, locating sites, and explaining events as they affected the local scene. History does not occur in a vacuum, and often the explanation for certain behaviors or events lies beyond the local phenomena. It is the intention of this study to present the history of the Big Trees and Avery School Districts within a larger context of national forces which were also at work and sometimes, dominated the events. It is hoped that the effort to bring education …

Enteric Infections In Stockton, California : With Special Reference To The Genus Campylobacter, Tom Edward Hathorn

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

During the last two or three years, the three largest hospitals in Stockton (St. Joseph’s, Dameron and San Joaquin General Hospitals) have modified their procedures to include the search for Campylobacter. On the other hand, the incidence of Yersinia in California is unknown, as most clinical laboratories do not specifically culture for it. There have been only a few reports of Yersinia in this state (personal communication of Dennis Ferrero, Director of the San Joaquin County Public Health Laboratory). This study has a threefold purpose: to investigate the incidences of Campylobacter and Yersinia, especially in relation to the incidence of …

A Comparative Study Of The Allium Obtusum Comples, William R. Mortola

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The taxa of the Allium obtusum complex were examined morphologically, chromosomally, and with the use of the scanning electron microscope, Additional field studies included ultraviolet photography, caging experiments, and collection of insect visitors.

Based on the cumulative information gathered during this investigation, of the 7 taxa previously proposed in this complex, 4 are considered to be valid: A. cratericola, A. obtusum, A. tribracteatum, and A. yosemitense, A new variety of A. obtusum, var, robustum is described.

The base chromosome number among all members of the complex is seven, All species are diploid (2n=14), except for one population of A. cratericola …

The Effect Of Emg And Skin Temperature Biofeedback On Essential Hypertension, Michael Harness Jan 1983

The Effect Of Emg And Skin Temperature Biofeedback On Essential Hypertension, Michael Harness

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, behavioral approaches for the treatment of essential hypertension have received considerable research attention. Biofeedback and relaxation training have been the behavioral treatments most often used for lowering high blood pressure. The present study compared the separate use of EMG and skin temperature biofeedback in treating essential hypertension, with a combined approach utilizing both types of feedback. Twenty-one hyper- tensive subjects were randomly assigned to one of the three experimental conditions: (a) EMG biofeedback, (b) skin temperature biofeedback, or (c) both EMG and skin temperature biofeedback. In addition, a control group consisting of patients randomly chosen from a …

The Effects Of L1 And L2 Instruction On The Metalinguistic Awareness Of Spanish-Speaking Children, Rene Merino Jan 1983

The Effects Of L1 And L2 Instruction On The Metalinguistic Awareness Of Spanish-Speaking Children, Rene Merino

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The Problem: While middle class students can succeed in L2 immersion programs, there is growing evidence that language minority students from low socioeconomic backgrounds do better in Ll programs. Jim Cummins' linguistic interdependency hypothesis resolves this apparent paradox by proposing that middle class students enter school with cognitive academic language proficiencies (CALF), which allow them to succeed in language mismatch situations. He claims that CALF is best developed in Ll and that schools should_teach language minority students in their first language. This study attempted to test the validity of Cummins' CALF construct. It also investigated the effects of Ll and …

Analysis Of Clay Minerals, Other Silicate And Nonsilicate Minerals, And The Grading Of Chrysotile Asbestos By Attenuated Total Reflection Infrared Spectrophotometry (With Atlas), Ashraf Muhammad Chaudhry

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

This study of ATR-IR involved taking spectra of various silicate minerals in powder samples, finding similarities and differences in nature, and locating various bands and intensities of absorption bands for identification and classification purposes. This study is limited to 4000-300 cm-1 with major emphasis on absorptions in the 2000-300 cm-1 region.
