Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Electrode materials with battery-like high capacity and capacitorlike rate performance are highly desirable, since they would signifi cantly advance next-generation energy storage technology. [ 1 ] TiO 2 has received increasing attention as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its good reversible capacity and low volume expansion upon lithiation, as well as its low cost and safe lithiation potential. [ 2 ] The low lithium-ion mobility within the crystalline phase TiO 2 , however, together with its poor electrical conductivity, means that only a thin surface layer of the host material is available for Li intercalation at …

In-Arrears Interest Rate Derivatives Under The 3/2 Model, Joanna M. Goard Jan 2015

In-Arrears Interest Rate Derivatives Under The 3/2 Model, Joanna M. Goard

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Lie symmetry methods are used to find a closed form solution for in-arrears swaps under the 3/2 model ( ( ) ) ˆ 3 dr = r A t −α r dt + cr 2dZ . As well, approximate solutions are found for short-tenor inarrears caplets and floorlets under the same interest rate model. Comparisons are made of the approximate option values with those obtained with a computationally-intensive numerical scheme. The approximate pricing is found to be substantially fast easy to implement, while the relative errors with respect to the “true” prices are very small.

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

For practical application, the functional piezoelectric film in microelectromechanical systems should meet the requirement of physical properties, as well as the mechanical properties. In this article, 0.5Ba(Ti0.8Zr0.2)O3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 (0.5BZT-0.5BCT) thin films with varied properties were prepared on (100) Si substrates via a sol-gel technique at different annealing temperatures. The effects of the annealing temperature on the morphology, piezoelectricity, hardness, and elastic modulus were studied. Particular attention was paid to the surface frictional behavior of films, and the changes in the friction force can be radically explained in terms of differences in the hardness/elastic modulus ratio and the residual stress of films. …

On Asymptotic Behaviour And W 2, P Regularity Of Potentials In Optimal Transportation, Jiakun Liu, Neil Trudinger, Xu-Jia Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

© 2014, Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg. In this paper we study local properties of cost and potential functions in optimal transportation. We prove that in a proper normalization process, the cost function is uniformly smooth and converges locally smoothly to a quadratic cost x · y, while the potential function converges to a quadratic function. As applications we obtain the interior W2, p estimates and sharp C1, α estimates for the potentials, which satisfy a Monge–Ampère type equation. The W2, p estimate was previously proved by Caffarelli for the quadratic transport cost and the associated standard Monge–Ampère equation.

Terahertz Spectroscopy Of 2,4-Dinitrotoluene Over A Wide Temperature Range (7−245 K), Lucia Lepodise, Josip Horvat, R A. Lewis

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Previous THz spectroscopy of the TNT explosive precursor, 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), has been restricted to room temperature (apart from one set of data at 11 K). Here, for the first time, we investigate the spectrum as the temperature is systematically varied, from 7 to 245 K. Many new features appear in the spectrum on cooling below room temperature. As well as the five absorption lines observed previously, we observe five additional lines. In addition, a new room-temperature line at 8.52 THz (281 cm−1) is observed. Six of the lines red-shift with temperature and four of them blue-shift. The blue shift is …

Boundary C^{2,\Alpha} Estimates For Monge-Ampere Type Equations, Yong Huang, Feida Jiang, Jiakun Liu Jan 2015

Boundary C^{2,\Alpha} Estimates For Monge-Ampere Type Equations, Yong Huang, Feida Jiang, Jiakun Liu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In this paper, we obtain global second derivative estimates for solutions of the Dirichlet problem of certain Monge-Ampère type equations under some structural conditions, while the inhomogeneous term is only assumed to be Hölder continuous and bounded away from zero and infinity. These estimates correspond to those for the standard Monge-Ampère equation obtained by Trudinger and Wang (2008) and by Savin (2013), and have natural applications in optimal transportation and prescribed Jacobian equations.

Hierarchical Porous Li 2 Mg(Nh)2@C Nanowires With Long Cycle Life Towards Stable Hydrogen Storage, Guanglin Xia, Yingbin Tan, Dan Li, Zaiping Guo, Hua-Kun Liu, Zongwen Liu, Xuebin Yu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The hierarchical porous Li2Mg(NH)2@C nanowires full of micropores, mesopores, and macropores are successfully fabricated via a single-nozzle electrospinning technique combined with in-situ reaction between the precursors, i.e., MgCl2 and LiN3, under physical restriction upon thermal annealing. The explosive decomposition of LiN3 well dispersed in the electrospun nanowires during carbothermal treatment induces a highly porous structure, which provides a favourable way for H2 delivering in and out of Li2Mg(NH)2 nanoparticles simultaneously realized by the space-confinement of the porous carbon coating. As a result, the thus-fabricated Li2Mg(NH)2 …

The crystal volume ratio and compositional dependencies of the hydrostatic charge and voltage coefficients (dh and gh) and hydrostatic figure of merit (FOM) dh x gh were determined, where large FOM value of 3.2 pm2/N with high stability as a function of hydrostatic pressure was achieved for rhombohedral crystal composites. In addition, the stress amplification effects of the face-plate and different epoxy matrixes were investigated, with maximum FOM value being on the order of 92 pm2/N, indicating that 2-2 crystal/epoxy composites are …

Hep-2 Cell Image Classification With Multiple Linear Descriptors, Lingqiao Liu, Lei Wang Jan 2014

Hep-2 Cell Image Classification With Multiple Linear Descriptors, Lingqiao Liu, Lei Wang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The automatic classification of the HEp-2 cell stain patterns from indirect immunofluorescence images has attracted much attention recently. As an image classification problem, it can be well solved by the state-of-the-art bag-of-features (BoF) model as long as a suitable local descriptor is known. Unfortunately, for this special task, we have very limited knowledge of such a descriptor. In this paper, we explore the possibility of automatically learning the descriptor from the image data itself. Specifically, we assume that a local patch can be well described by a set of linear projections performed on its pixel values. Based on this assumption, …

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

The microstructural origin of the exceptionally high piezoelectric response of polycrystalline 0.5Ba(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O3-0.5(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3 is investigated using in situ transmission electron microscopy, in addition to a wide variety of bulk measurements and first-principles calculations. A direct correlation is established relating a domain wall-free state to the ultrahigh piezoelectric d33 coefficient in this BaTiO3-based composition. The results suggest that the unique single-domain state formed during electrical poling is a result of a structural transition from coexistent rhombohedral and tetragonal phases to an orthorhombic phase that has an anomalously low elastic modulus. First-principles calculations indicate that incorporating Ca2+ and Zr4+ into BaTiO3 reduces the …

Propargyl amines 4, where R3 is aryl, undergo 5-exo-dig cyclization reactions under relatively mild conditions (AgNO3, DMF, 60 °C, 1 h) to give 3-amino-2,3-dihydro-2-arylmethylidenebenzofurans 5 (R3 = aryl). In contrast, substrates where R3 is alkyl undergo competing 6-endo-dig and 5-exo-dig cyclization processes. The hydroxymethyl substrate 4 (R3 = CH2OH), however, was smoothly converted to its corresponding 5-exo-dig cyclization product 5, likely due to the assistance of the primary hydroxyl group in the 5-exo-dig cyclization process by silver cation coordination. Under more enforcing conditions (AgNO3, DMF, 100 °C, 18 h), the initially formed products 5 undergo a 1,3-allylic rearrangement to their …
