The role of microstructure in susceptibility to hydrogen uptake and property degradation is being evaluated using a number of high strength pipeline steels. To do so, a cellular automaton (CA) model has been used to examine the effect of grain size, as a first step in assessing the influence of microstructure. The simulation results of hydrogen diffusion into microstructures with different grain sizes are presented.

Yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi) are angled throughout their global distribution and released in large numbers under the unsubstantiatedassumption of few impacts. The validity of this supposition was tested for southeastern Australian stocks. In all, 54 fishwere angled and released into cages with 36 controls and monitored for 5 d. Of the angled fish, 15% died, mostly as a consequenceof gill-hooking and the associated physiological and mechanical damage. A biotelemetry experiment was then performed to determineif cutting the line on gill-hooked fish could improve their post-release fate. The scholarly coaching literature has advanced considerably in the past decade. However, a review of the existing knowledge base suggests that coaching practice and research remains relatively uninformed by relevant psychological theory. In this paper it will be argued that Self-Determination Theory (SDT; Deci & Ryan, 1985) presents as a useful theoretical framework for coaching as it can help understand coaching practice at both macro and micro levels. The anchorage capacity of fully grouted bolts has been studied for many years, however the bolt rib profile and its effect on bolt shear resistance is poorly understood. A new development in calculating load transfer capacity between two rib profiles of varying geometries is discussed. The derived mathematical equations presented calculate the stress distribution adjacent to the fully grouted bolt and bolt pull out force needed to fail the resin. This study presents a high spatial resolution dosimetry system for quality assurance of I-125 eye plaques. The system is based on a silicon pixelated detector and is capable of deriving 3D dose distributions. A simple design was implemented, incorporating a movable eye plaque in a small water phantom above the silicon Medipix2 detector. It is designed for obtaining 2D dose distributions at different depths in water, for subsequent 3D dose mapping. We investigate the Australian methane budget from 2005-2008 using the GEOS-Chem 3D chemistry transport model, focusing on the relative contribution of emissions from different sectors and the influence of long-range transport. To evaluate the model, we use in situ surface measurements of methane, methane dry air column average (XCH 4) from ground-based Fourier transform spectrometers (FTSs), and train-borne surface concentration measurements from an in situ FTS along the north-south continental transect. The treatment of highly saline aqueous solutions using direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) was evaluated in this study. Experiments were conducted using a flat sheet polytetrafluoroethylene membrane with nominal pore size of 0.22 µm. Seawater, reverse osmosis (RO) concentrate collected from a wastewater reclamation plant, and a synthetic solution containing 2,000 mg/L of CaSO4 were selected as the representative saline solutions. A gradual decline in permeate flux was observed at the beginning of the experiments when the seawater and RO concentrate solutions were treated using the DCMD process, most likely due to initial organic fouling and scaling. Background: A research team from Monash University and Peninsula Health, Victoria is undertaking a trial of digital pen and paper technology for clinical pathway management. Digital pen and paper allows for the capture of images of handwritten documents using an embedded camera in the pen which is matched with special patterns of dots on the paper. Susceptibility of Asian megadeltas to climate change, including sea-level rise, is investigated using GIS. The Indus, Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna, Irrawaddy, Chao Phraya, Mekong, Red, Pearl, Changjiang, and Huanghe deltas began to form around 6000 years ago and have prograded since. The surface topography of active and abandoned delta plains is examined using digital terrain models derived from Shuttle Radar Topography Mission data and channel morphology is investigated using radar imagery. After delta plains are abandoned they become increasingly dominated by tidal processes. Population density is estimated using gridded world population data but highly variable local microtopography and uncertainty regarding future climate changes …

The bake-hardening (BH) behavior of TRansformation Induced Plasticity (TRIP) and Dual-Phase (DP) steels after intercritical annealing (IA) has been studied using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and three dimensional atom probe tomography. It was found for the DP steel that carbon can segregate to dislocations in the ferrite plastic deformation zones where there is a high dislocation density around the “as-quenched” martensite. The carbon pinning of these dislocations, in turn, increases the yield strength after aging. It was shown that bake-hardening also leads to rearrangement of carbon in the martensite leading to the formation of rod-like low temperature carbides in …

A comprehensive investigation of electrocoagulation using sacrificial titanium (Ti) electrodes in wastewater was carried out. The effects of specific process variables, such as initial pH, mixing, current density, initial organic loading, and ionic/electrolyte strength were first optimized to produce recyclable Ti-based sludge. The sludge was incinerated at 600 °C to produce functional TiO2 photocatalyst. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that TiO2 produced at optimum electrocoagulation conditions was mostly anatase structure. A Software Defined Radio test bed using the Gnu Radio project was installed on Unix computers and modified so that estimates of the channel state coefficients were taken for a Multiple Input Multiple output (MIMO) system to take advantage of space time transmission at a frequency of 2.4GHz. We describe a technique that permits broad-band, field-dependent ferromagnetic and electron paramagnetic resonance absorption measurements that is applicable to thin films and patterned micro-/nanostructured arrays and is based on a wire-wound meanderline approach. Yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) film was synthesized by a metal-organic deposition (MOD) process with fluorine-free Y and Cu precursor. The precursor solution with Sm addition enabled further improvement of the thickness and uniformity of precursor films. The calcination and firing processes were studied, and the precursor film was successfully converted to dense and uniform YBCO film on LaAlO3 (LAO) substrate after annealing in a wet Ar and O2 atmosphere. We investigated on microstructure and superconducting properties of high-density MgB2superconductors synthesized by a heat-treatment method combining a short period of sintering at 1100°C with a following annealing at a low temperature. The two-step sintering method was found to achieve a coexistence of a high density and broadened XRD full width at half maximum (FWHM) of MgB2 peak in the samples. The onset of diamagnetism at 5 T was approximately 2 K higher than those of the samples heat-treated by single-step sintering at high or low temperatures. The sports industry is an important one; it is estimated to be the 11th largest industry in the United States. Within this industry, individual sports, at both the amateur and professional levels, compete for talented players, supporters, government funding, and sponsorship dollars. In this paper we examine the barriers to using ICT of secondary mathematics teachers in the classroom. The sample contained 114 mathematics teachers from public secondary schools in New South Wales (Australia). The instrument used in this study was a survey questionnaire mailed to secondary schools in the New South Wales Department of Education and Training. The questionnaire design is a closed-response with five open-ended questions. Results of the study showed that lack of access to computer labs is the number one barrier to using ICT in the classroom.
