Latitudinal Biogeographic Structuring In The Globally Distributed Moss Ceratodon Purpureus, Elisabeth Machteld Biersma, Peter Convey, Rhys Wyber, Sharon A. Robinson, Mark P. Dowton, Bart Van De Vijver, Katrin Linse, Howard Griffiths, Jennifer A. Jackson

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: Part B

Biogeographic patterns of globally widespread species are expected to reflect regional structure, as well as connectivity caused by occasional long-distance dispersal. We assessed the level and drivers of population structure, connectivity, and timescales of population isolation in one of the most widespread and ruderal plants in the world — the common moss Ceratodon purpureus. We applied phylogenetic, population genetic, and molecular dating analyses to a global (n = 147) sampling data set, using three chloroplast loci and one nuclear locus. The plastid data revealed several distinct and geographically structured lineages, with connectivity patterns associated with worldwide, latitudinal “bands.” These imply …

An Iot- Based Decision Support Tool For Improving The Performance Of Smart Grids Connected With Distributed Energy Sources And Electric Vehicles, Md Rabiul Islam, Haiyan Lu, M J. Hossain, Li Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part B

vThe growing penetration of distributed energy sources (DES), such as photovoltaic (PV) solar power, battery energy systems and electric vehicles (EVs) into low voltage distribution networks is creating serious challenges for distribution network operators. Uncertain nature of these DES and EV charging is a key factor to cause unbalance, which degrade network performance in terms of energy loss, voltage unbalance, and voltage profile of the distribution network, etc. Some methods were proposed to mitigate such negative impact of these uncertain DES and EV charging from both centralized and decentralized approaches by controlling charging or discharging power of EVs. However, these …

Capillary-Induced Ge Uniformly Distributed In N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes With Enhanced Li-Storage Performance, Haipeng Guo, Boyang Ruan, Lili Liu, Lei Zhang, Zhanliang Tao, Shulei Chou, Jiazhao Wang, Hua-Kun Liu Jan 2017

Capillary-Induced Ge Uniformly Distributed In N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes With Enhanced Li-Storage Performance, Haipeng Guo, Boyang Ruan, Lili Liu, Lei Zhang, Zhanliang Tao, Shulei Chou, Jiazhao Wang, Hua-Kun Liu

Australian Institute for Innovative Materials - Papers

Germanium (Ge) is a prospective anode material for lithium-ion batteries, as it possesses large theoretical capacity, outstanding lithium-ion diffusivity, and excellent electrical conductivity. Ge suffers from drastic capacity decay and poor rate performance, however, owing to its low electrical conductivity and huge volume expansion during cycling processes. Herein, a novel strategy has been developed to synthesize a Ge at N-doped carbon nanotubes (Ge at N-CNTs) composite with Ge nanoparticles uniformly distributed in the N-CNTs by using capillary action. This unique structure could effectively buffer large volume expansion. When evaluated as an anode material, the Ge at N-CNTs demonstrate enhanced cycling …

A Distributed User-Centered Approach For Control In Ambient Robotic, Nicolas R. Verstaevel, Christine Regis, Marie-Pierre Gleizes, Fabrice Robert

SMART Infrastructure Facility - Papers

Designing a controller to supervise an ambient application is a complex task. Any change in the system composition or end-users needs involves re-performing the whole design process. Giving to each device the ability to self-adapt to both end-users and system dynamic is then an interesting challenge. This article contributes to this challenge by proposing an approach named Extreme Sensitive Robotic where the design is not guided by finality but by the functionalities provided. One functionality is then seen as an autonomous system, which can self-adapt to what it perceives from its environment (including human activity). We present ALEX, the first …

Optimizing Distributed Generation Parameters Through Economic Feasibility Assessment, Kashem M. Muttaqi, An D. T Le, Jamshid Aghaei, Esmaeil Mahboubi-Moghaddam, Michael Negnevitsky, Gerard Ledwich

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

To meet the fast growth of electricity demand, the traditional network solution tends to expand existing substations, build more new substations, and build transmission lines. Distributed Generation (DG) is posed as an alternative method for the network providers not only to accommodate the load increase and relieve network overload, but also to offer other additional technical and economic benefits. This paper addresses the issue of DG planning and has proposed a technique for optimizing the DG size and location to minimize the overall investment and operational cost of the system. The proposed optimization methodology assesses the compatibility of different generation …

A Distributed Broadcast Algorithm For Duty-Cycled Networks With Physical Interference Model, Dianbo Zhao, Kwan-Wu Chin Jan 2015

A Distributed Broadcast Algorithm For Duty-Cycled Networks With Physical Interference Model, Dianbo Zhao, Kwan-Wu Chin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Broadcast is a fundamental operation in multi-hop wireless networks. Given a source node with a message to broadcast, the objective is to propagate the message to all nodes in an interferencefree manner while incurring minimum latency. This problem, called Minimum-Latency Broadcast Scheduling (MLBS), has been studied extensively in wireless networks whereby nodes remain on all times and has been shown to be NP-hard. However, only a few studies have addressed this problem in the context of duty-cycled wireless networks, which unfortunately, remains NP-hard. In these networks, nodes do not wake up simultaneously, and hence, not all neighbors of a transmitting …

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Increasing demand of electrical energy has leaded to utilization of more and more Distributed generation (DG) sources in distribution systems. Since the locations and capacities of the DG sources connected to the distribution system profoundly impact on reducing system loss and improving system reliability, so placement and sizing indication of DGs is the most substantial process in distribution systems. By adding the reliability objective to this problem, it becomes more complicated than before and it needs to be solved with an accurate algorithm. To this reason, to solve the proposed problem a new approach based on the mixture of two …

Dc-Link Fault Current Limiter-Based Fault Ride-Through Scheme For Inverter-Based Distributed Generation, Amin Jalilian, Mehrdad Tarafdar Hagh, Mehdi Abapour, Kashem M. Muttaqi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Owing to increasing the penetration level of the inverter-based distributed generations (IBDGs) in power systems, their fault ride-through (FRT) capability has become one of the essential issues of new grid codes. This study proposes a novel DC-link fault current limiter (DLFCL)-based FRT scheme to improve the FRT capability in IBDG units. The DLFCL module has almost no effect on normal operation of IBDG. When a short-circuit fault occurs in power system, the DLFCL module effectively limits the inverter output current and protects its switching devices. The employed DLFCL does not need any control, measurement and gate driving system. Also, it …

On Transformation Of Query Scheduling Strategies In Distributed And Heterogeneous Database Systems, Janusz R. Getta, - Handoko

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This work considers a problem of optimal query processing in heterogeneous and distributed database systems. A global query sub- mitted at a local site is decomposed into a number of queries processed at the remote sites. The partial results returned by the queries are in- tegrated at a local site. The paper addresses a problem of an optimal scheduling of queries that minimizes time spend on data integration of the partial results into the final answer. A global data model defined in this work provides a unified view of the heterogeneous data structures located at the remote sites and a …

Alleviation Of Neutral-To-Ground Potential Rise Under Unbalanced Allocation Of Rooftop Pv Using Distributed Energy Storage, Md Jan E Alam, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Danny Sutanto Jan 2015

Alleviation Of Neutral-To-Ground Potential Rise Under Unbalanced Allocation Of Rooftop Pv Using Distributed Energy Storage, Md Jan E Alam, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Danny Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A high penetration of one-phase rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) units with unbalanced allocation can create considerable neutral current and neutral potential rise in low voltage (LV) four-wire multigrounded distribution networks, even with balanced loads. Because of the limitations of traditional strategies to mitigate the combined effect of load and PV unbalance, this paper proposes the use of distributed energy storage to reduce the neutral current and neutral potential under a high penetration of unbalanced rooftop solar PV allocation. A power-balancing algorithm based on charge/discharge control is developed to continuously adjust the power exchange with the grid to mitigate the neutral …

Identity-Based Secure Distributed Data Storage Schemes, Jinguang Han, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu Jan 2014

Identity-Based Secure Distributed Data Storage Schemes, Jinguang Han, Willy Susilo, Yi Mu

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Secure distributed data storage can shift the burden of maintaining a large number of files from the owner to proxy servers. Proxy servers can convert encrypted files for the owner to encrypted files for the receiver without the necessity of knowing the content of the original files. In practice, the original files will be removed by the owner for the sake of space efficiency. Hence, the issues on confidentiality and integrity of the outsourced data must be addressed carefully. In this paper, we propose two identity-based secure distributed data storage (IBSDDS) schemes. Our schemes can capture the following properties: (1) …

Balancing Energy In The Smart Grid Using Distributed Value Function (Dvf), Hassan Shirzeh, Fazel Naghdy, Philip Ciufo, Montserrat Ros

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

As the penetration of renewable energy resources increases in distribution networks, so does the need to manage these resources in an effective manner. Since these resources are installed to displace carbon-based generation and to provide an income stream to the resource owner, it is important that both installation objectives (as a minimum) can be met. With all of these renewable energy resources available, the opportunity also exists to assist with the energy management of this resource-rich distribution network. However, the renewable energy resources do not produce power in a deterministic manner. The available production depends on the time of day …

Over-Voltage Mitigation Within Distribution Networks With A High Renewable Distributed Generation Penetration, Joel Kennedy, Philip Ciufo, Ashish Agalgaonkar Jan 2014

Over-Voltage Mitigation Within Distribution Networks With A High Renewable Distributed Generation Penetration, Joel Kennedy, Philip Ciufo, Ashish Agalgaonkar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The rapid growth of grid-connected distributed generation has increased the likelihood of over-voltage occurrences in distribution networks. In recent times, much research has taken place in order to develop a control strategy to mitigate the voltage rise problem. However, most of the published strategies require re-tuning when additional resources are connected, or have a strong dependence on network parameters, such as fault level. This paper proposes a novel over-voltage mitigation scheme that has many advantages not observed in literature. Firstly, the control scheme can integrate with an existing feeder in a plug-and-play fashion. No prior analysis is necessary to configure …

A Novel Distributed Algorithm For Complete Targets Coverage In Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks, Changlin Yang, Kwan-Wu Chin Jan 2014

A Novel Distributed Algorithm For Complete Targets Coverage In Energy Harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks, Changlin Yang, Kwan-Wu Chin

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A fundamental problem in energy harvesting Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is to maximize coverage, whereby the goal is to capture events of interest that occur in one or more target areas. To this end, this paper addresses the problem of maximizing network lifetime whilst ensuring all targets are monitored continuously by at least one sensor node. Specifically, we will address the Distributed Maximum Lifetime Coverage with Energy Harvesting (DMLC-EH) problem. The objective is to determine a distributed algorithm that allows sensor nodes to form a minimal set cover using local information whilst minimizing missed recharging opportunities. We propose an eligibility …

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

Purpose - Interdisciplinary approaches to climate change teaching are well justified and arise from the complexity of climate change challenges and the integrated problem-solving responses they demand. These approaches require academic teachers to collaborate across disciplines. Yet, the fragmentation typical of universities impedes collaborative teaching practice. This paper aims to report on the outcomes of a distributed leadership project in four Australian universities aimed at enhancing interdisciplinary climate change teaching. Design/methodology/approach - Communities of teaching practice were established at four Australian universities with participants drawn from a wide range of disciplines. The establishment and operation of these communities relied on …

Fault Approximation Tool For Grid-Connected Inverter-Interfaced Distributed Generators, Joel Kennedy, Philip Ciufo, Ashish Agalgaonkar Jan 2014

Fault Approximation Tool For Grid-Connected Inverter-Interfaced Distributed Generators, Joel Kennedy, Philip Ciufo, Ashish Agalgaonkar

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A novel fault approximation tool (FAT) is presented for use in distribution networks with a high penetration of inverter-interfaced distributed generation. The FAT does not rely on balanced operation nor an absolute reference point for voltage calculations, both of which are required for Newton-Raphson load flow calculations. Simulations show that the FAT provides an accurate representation of the transient and steady-state fault response for unbalanced faults when juxtaposed with a detailed small-signal model. The `sub-transient' response of the inverter-interfaced distributed generation is omitted to remove data considered extraneous from the perspective of distribution line protection analysis. The FAT is not …

A Novel Tuning Method For Advanced Line Drop Compensator And Its Application To Response Coordination Of Distributed Generation With Voltage Regulating Devices, Kashem M. Muttaqi, An D. T Le, Michael Negnevitsky, Gerard Ledwich Jan 2014

A Novel Tuning Method For Advanced Line Drop Compensator And Its Application To Response Coordination Of Distributed Generation With Voltage Regulating Devices, Kashem M. Muttaqi, An D. T Le, Michael Negnevitsky, Gerard Ledwich

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Nowadays, integration of small-scale electricity generators, known as Distributed Generation (DG), into distribution networks has become increasingly popular. This tendency together with the falling price of DG units has a great potential in giving the DG a better chance to participate in voltage regulation process, in parallel with other regulating devices already available in the distribution systems. The voltage control issue turns out to be a very challenging problem for distribution engineers, since existing control coordination schemes need to be reconsidered to take into account the DG operation. In this paper, a control coordination approach is proposed, which is able …

An Approach For Assessing The Effectiveness Of Multiple-Feature-Based Svm Method For Islanding Detection Of Distributed Generation, Mollah R. Alam, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum Jan 2014

An Approach For Assessing The Effectiveness Of Multiple-Feature-Based Svm Method For Islanding Detection Of Distributed Generation, Mollah R. Alam, Kashem M. Muttaqi, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Islanding detection is a critical protection issue, as conventional protection schemes such as vector surge (VS) and rate of change of frequency relays do not guarantee islanding detection for all network conditions. Integration of multiple distributed generation (DG) units of different sizes and technologies into distribution grids makes this issue even more critical. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the effectiveness of a new method for islanding detection in DG networks. The proposed method, which is based on multiple features and support vector machine (SVM) classification, has the potential to overcome the limitations of conventional protection schemes. The multifeature-based …

A Distributed Maximal Link Scheduler For Multi Tx/Rx Wireless Mesh Networks, He Wang, Kwan-Wu Chin, Raad Raad, Sieteng Soh

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Recently, researchers have developed Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) where each router is capable of performing multiple transmissions or receptions concurrently; aka Multi Tx-Rx (MTR) WMNs. Consequently, each node is able to transmit (Tx) or receive (Rx) to/from its neighbors simultaneously. A fundamental problem in such WMNs is to derive a transmission schedule with minimal superframe length to maximize network capacity and minimize end-to-end delays. Unfortunately, deriving a minimal superframe length is equivalent to solving the NP-complete, MAX-CUT problem. To this end, there are a number of centralized schedulers, but only but only one distributed scheduler, called JazzyMAC. Henceforth, in this …

Security Analysis Of A Distributed Reprogramming Protocol For Wireless Sensor Networks, Yong Yu, Jianbing Ni, Ying Sun

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Reprogramming for wireless sensor networks is essential to upload new code or to alter the functionality of existing code. To overcome the weakness of the centralized approach of the traditional solutions, He et al. proposed the notion of distributed reprogramming where multiple authorized network users are able to reprogram sensor nodes without involving the base station. They also gave a novel distributed reprogramming protocol called SDRP by using identity-based signature, and provided a comprehensive security analysis for their protocol. In this letter, unfortunately, we demonstrate that SDRP is insecure as the protocol fails to satisfy the property of authenticity and …

Capacity Deferral Credit Evaluation Of Renewable Distributed Generation, M A. Abdullah, K M. Muttaqi, A P. Agalgaonkar, D Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Renewable distributed generation (DG) units can aid in distribution network planning and can be utilized in distribution expansion planning. In order to support the development of distributed renewable resources in the distribution network and to make these resources competitive in the energy market, a well justified credit scheme needs to be devised. In this paper, an analytical method has been developed to estimate the capacity deferral credit of renewable DGs that can be claimed from distribution system operators (DSOs) due to the deferral of conventional distribution network expansion options. The distribution network adequacy has been assessed using the combined multistate …

Security Analysis Of A Single Sign-On Mechanism For Distributed Computer Networks, Guilin Wang, Jiangshan Yu, Qi Xie Jan 2013

Security Analysis Of A Single Sign-On Mechanism For Distributed Computer Networks, Guilin Wang, Jiangshan Yu, Qi Xie

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Single sign-on (SSO) is a new authentication mechanism that enables a legal user with a single credential to be authenticated by multiple service providers in a distributed computer network. Recently, Chang and Lee proposed a new SSO scheme and claimed its security by providing well-organized security arguments. In this paper, however, we demonstrative that their scheme is actually insecure as it fails to meet credential privacy and soundness of authentication. Specifically, we present two impersonation attacks. The first attack allows a malicious service provider, who has successfully communicated with a legal user twice, to recover the user's credential and then …

Mitigation Of Rooftop Solar Pv Impacts And Evening Peak Support By Managing Available Capacity Of Distributed Energy Storage Systems, Md Jan-E- Alam, Kashem Muttaqi, Darmawan Soetanto Jan 2013

Mitigation Of Rooftop Solar Pv Impacts And Evening Peak Support By Managing Available Capacity Of Distributed Energy Storage Systems, Md Jan-E- Alam, Kashem Muttaqi, Darmawan Soetanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A high penetration of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) resources into low-voltage (LV) distribution networks creates reverse power-flow and voltage-rise problems. This generally occurs when the generation from PV resources substantially exceeds the load demand during high insolation period. This paper has investigated the solar PV impacts and developed a mitigation strategy by an effective use of distributed energy storage systems integrated with solar PV units in LV networks. The storage is used to consume surplus solar PV power locally during PV peak, and the stored energy is utilized in the evening for the peak-load support. A charging/discharging control strategy is …

Distributed Energy Storage For Mitigation Of Voltage-Rise Impact Caused By Rooftop Solar Pv, M J. E Alam, K M. Muttaqi, Darmawan Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A high penetration of solar photovoltaic (PV) resources into distribution networks may create voltage rise problem when the generation from PV resources substantially exceeds the load demand. To reduce the voltage rise, the excess amount of power from the solar PV units needs to be reduced. In this paper, distributed storage systems are proposed for the mitigation of voltage rise problem. The surplus energy from the solar PV is used to charge the distributed storage units during midday, when the power from the solar PV would be typically higher than the load level. This stored energy is then used to …

Robust Distributed Privacy-Preserving Secure Aggregation In Vehicular Communication, Bo Qin, Qianhong Wu, Josep Domingo-Ferrer, Willy Susilo

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), formed by computers embedded in vehicles and the traffic infrastructure, are expected to develop in the near future to improve traffic safety and efficiency. To this end, VANETs should be designed to be resistant against various abuses and attacks. In this paper, we first review the existing proposals to provide security, privacy, and data aggregation in vehicle-to-vehicle communication. We then address the fundamental issue of achieving these conflicting properties in a unified solution, having observed that separate efforts cannot fulfill the VANET design objectives. A set of new mechanisms are suggested for efficiently managing identities …

A Multi-Agent Solution To Distribution System Management By Considering Distributed Generators, Fenghui Ren, Minjie Zhang, Darmawan Sutanto Jan 2012

A Multi-Agent Solution To Distribution System Management By Considering Distributed Generators, Fenghui Ren, Minjie Zhang, Darmawan Sutanto

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

A traditional distribution network carries electricity from a central power resource to consumers, and the power dispatch is controlled centrally. Distributed generators (DGs) emerge as an alternative power resource to distribution networks at a smaller and distributed scale, which will bring benefits such as reduced voltage drop and loss. However, because most of high penetration DGs are not utility owned and characterized by high degree of uncertainty such as solar and wind, the distribution network may perform differently from the conventionally expected behaviors. How to dynamically and efficiently manage the power dispatch in a distribution network to balance the supply …

An application started by a user at a central site isdecomposed into several data processing tasks to be independently processed at the remote sites. The objective of this work is to find a method for optimization of task processing schedules at acentral site. We define an abstract model of data and a system …

Support-Based Distributed Optimisation: An Approach To Radiotherapy Patient Scheduling, Graham Billiau, Chee-Fon Chang, Andrew Alexis Miller, Aditya K. Ghose Jan 2010

Support-Based Distributed Optimisation: An Approach To Radiotherapy Patient Scheduling, Graham Billiau, Chee-Fon Chang, Andrew Alexis Miller, Aditya K. Ghose

Faculty of Informatics - Papers (Archive)

In the health system inefficiency leads to poor use of scarce expensive resources. Lengthy patient treatment waiting time can result from inefficiency in scheduling. The use of state-of-the art multi-agent and distributed computing technologies can provide a solution to address this problem. However, distributed optimisation in such a multi-agent setting poses an important challenge that requires protocols to enable agents to optimise shared objectives without necessarily revealing all of their private constraints. In this study we show that if the problem is expressed as a Dynamic Distributed Constraint Optimisation Problem a powerful algorithm such as SBDO can be deployed to …

Scoping A Distributed Leadership Matrix For Higher Education, Sandra Jones, Ann Applebee, Marina Harvey, Geraldine E. Lefoe Jan 2010

Scoping A Distributed Leadership Matrix For Higher Education, Sandra Jones, Ann Applebee, Marina Harvey, Geraldine E. Lefoe

Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) - Papers

While there has been significant research into the theory and practice of distributed leadership in the school system, there has been less research into its applicability into higher education. This is somewhat surprising given the pressure on universities to reshape their governance models to accommodate a more competitive business environment as education becomes an important contributor to national economies. It is also interesting that, despite resistance from academics to the more ‘enterprise-based’ approach to shaping university leadership, there has not been a focus on a distributed leadership model that appears to accommodate the need for the autonomy that underpins academic …
