Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) is the first major study in the United Kingdom to focus specifically on the effectiveness of early years education. The large-scale, longitudinal study follows the progress and development of 4,000 children in various types of at home and pre-school settings. It explores the characteristics of different kinds of early years settings and their influences on children's early development and their later progress. It is now reporting at age 16. Dr. Melhuish's work explores the effects of student variables (gender, EAL status), family (parental SES, qualifications, home learning etc.) and neighbourhood characteristics on student's secondary …

Effective Teaching And Motivation: Application Of Self-Determination Theory, Dana J. Perlman

Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)

Developing quality and effective future teachers is a cornerstone of all teacher-education programs. An area of inquiry that has been identified as influential within the teacher development process is the concept of motivation. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine if there were differences between elements of effective teaching based on preservice teachers (PTs) motivation toward teaching. 68 (Male=44; Female=24) undergraduate Physical and Health Education PTs were recruited within this study. PT data were collected on their motivation toward teaching and elements of effective teaching. Results indicated that motivation was associated with elements of effective teaching.

A Novel Cost Effective Method For Vehicle Tire-Road Friction Coefficient Estimation, Boyuan Li, Haiping Du, Weihua Li Jan 2013

A Novel Cost Effective Method For Vehicle Tire-Road Friction Coefficient Estimation, Boyuan Li, Haiping Du, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

The tire-road friction coefficient is critical to vehicle longitudinal, lateral and roll dynamics and control because tire is the only contact part between the vehicle body and the road. However, direct measurement of tire-road friction coefficient is impossible in practice. This paper presents a novel cost effective method for vehicle tire-road friction coefficient estimation. This method only needs the measurements of the wheel angular velocity, the traction/brake torque and the longitudinal acceleration, which are all available from the commonly installed sensors in ordinary passenger vehicles, and can be used to estimate the individual tire-road friction coefficient. There are three steps …

A Secure And Effective Anonymous User Authentication Scheme For Roaming Service In Global Mobility Networks, Fentong Wen, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang Jan 2013

A Secure And Effective Anonymous User Authentication Scheme For Roaming Service In Global Mobility Networks, Fentong Wen, Willy Susilo, Guomin Yang

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

In global mobility networks, anonymous user authentication is an essential task for enabling roaming service. In a recent paper, Jiang et al. proposed a smart card based anonymous user authentication scheme for roaming service in global mobility networks. This scheme can protect user privacy and is believed to have many abilities to resist a range of network attacks, even if the secret information stored in the smart card is compromised. In this paper, we analyze the security of Jiang et al.'s scheme, and show that the scheme is in fact insecure against the stolen-verifier attack and replay attack. Then, we …

An Evaluation Of Ferrihydrite- And Metsorb™-Dgt Techniques For Measuring Oxyanion Species (As, Se, V, P): Effective Capacity, Competition And Diffusion Coefficients, Helen L. Price, Peter R. Teasdale, Dianne F. Jolley Jan 2013

An Evaluation Of Ferrihydrite- And Metsorb™-Dgt Techniques For Measuring Oxyanion Species (As, Se, V, P): Effective Capacity, Competition And Diffusion Coefficients, Helen L. Price, Peter R. Teasdale, Dianne F. Jolley

Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health - Papers: part A

tThis study investigated several knowledge gaps with respect to the diffusive gradients in thin films(DGT) technique for measurement of oxyanions (As(III), As(V), Se(IV), Se(VI), PO43−, and V(V)) usingthe ferrihydrite and MetsorbTMbinding layers. Elution efficiencies for each binding layer were higherwith 1:20 dilutions, as analytical interferences for ICP-MS were minimised. Diffusion coefficients mea-sured by diffusion cell and by DGT time-series experiments were found to agree well and generallyagreed with previously reported values, although a range of diffusion coefficients have been reportedfor inorganic As and Se species. The relative binding affinity for both ferrihydrite and MetsorbTMwasPO43−≈ As(V) > V(V) ≈ As(III) > Se(IV) ≫ …

An Effective Methodology To Solve Inverse Kinematics Of Electroactive Polymer Actuators Modelled As Active And Soft Robotic Structures, Rahim Mutlu, Gursel Alici, Weihua Li Jan 2013

An Effective Methodology To Solve Inverse Kinematics Of Electroactive Polymer Actuators Modelled As Active And Soft Robotic Structures, Rahim Mutlu, Gursel Alici, Weihua Li

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Electroactive polymers (EAPs) generate highly non-linear deflections when they are used as actuators, which are known as artificial muscles. Though several modelling methods have been proposed before to understand their mechanical, chemical, electrical behaviours or 'electro-chemo-mechanical' behaviour, estimating the whole shape deflection of the EAP actuators has not been studied yet. Therefore, we report on (i) an effective methodology to estimate these actuators' whole shape deflection by employing a soft robotic actuator/manipulator approach and (ii) an angle optimization method, which we call AngleOPT, to accurately solve the EAP actuators' inverse kinematic problem. Laminated polypyrrole (PPy) EAP actuators are employed to …

You Never Know What Question You Are Going To Answer: Creating Effective Tension For Effective Learning Using Business Case Studies, Palli Mulla K A Chandrakumara, Ananda Wickramasinghe Jan 2013

You Never Know What Question You Are Going To Answer: Creating Effective Tension For Effective Learning Using Business Case Studies, Palli Mulla K A Chandrakumara, Ananda Wickramasinghe

Sydney Business School - Papers

Case studies in business management have been used as an effective approach and tool for enhancing students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills by providing opportunities for student to apply appropriate theories, concepts and models for real world issues faced by organisations. Despite the popularity of the case study approach in business and management education, it is self evident that the effective use of case studies to achieve above mentioned benefits is challenging and problematic mainly because case studies are misused and abused in different ways, including just adopting a popular method, just asking students to read and answer the questions, …

When Users Are Professionals: Effective User Participation For Information System Assimilation: A Multilevel Model, Kathy Ning Shen, Mohamed Khalifa, Ahmad Almulla Jan 2013

When Users Are Professionals: Effective User Participation For Information System Assimilation: A Multilevel Model, Kathy Ning Shen, Mohamed Khalifa, Ahmad Almulla

University of Wollongong in Dubai - Papers

Prior research on the role of user participation in system development has yielded inconsistent results. One of reasons might be attributed to the various users and research in this field needs to take into consideration of the characteristics of users themselves. Users' professional background has been documented as one of major reasons for resistance. However, very little research has investigated how to resolve such resistance. Our study makes a significant step forward to understand and empirically validate the contingencies of business professional users' participation. With an exploratory case study, we identify three important contingencies that determine the effectiveness of professional …

Hpv Vaccination Programs Have Not Been Shown To Be Cost-Effective In Countries With Comprehensive Pap Screening And Surgery, Roslyn Judith Wilyman Jan 2013

Hpv Vaccination Programs Have Not Been Shown To Be Cost-Effective In Countries With Comprehensive Pap Screening And Surgery, Roslyn Judith Wilyman

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

Pap screening combined with loop electrosurgical excision procedures (LEEP) is almost 100% effective in preventing cervical cancer mortality yet many countries with these procedures have now implemented broad HPV vaccination programs. HPV vaccines have not been demonstrated to be more effective or safer than Pap screening in the prevention of cervical cancer and Pap screening will still be required even in vaccinated women. The HPV vaccine costs Au$450 per person and it does not protect against ~30% of cancer. This investigation analyses the cost-effectiveness of using the HPV vaccine in countries where Pap screening and surgical procedures have already reduced …

Effective Crisis Governance, Brian Martin Jan 2013

Effective Crisis Governance, Brian Martin

Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts - Papers (Archive)

When a crisis develops, what sort of governance—what sort of system for running society—is most resilient? Does centralized control give the best prospect of survival? Or is something more decentralized needed?

Possible political sources of crisis include military invasion, internal coups, political paralysis, major corruption, and revolutionary change. Wars in the past century triggered changes in governance in countries such as Germany, Japan, and Cambodia. Coups affected dozens of countries, from Chile to Greece. Revolutions transformed Russia, China, and Iran.

At least as significant are changes enabled by belief systems. The spread of neoliberalism—based on belief in unfettered markets—has transformed …
