Promoting Respite For Carers Of People With Dementia: A Case Study Of Social Marketing Effectiveness In Hard To Reach Audiences, Lyn Phillipson, Danika Hall, Keryn M. Johnson, Elizabeth Cridland, Elaine Fielding, Christine Neville, Helen Hasan

Australian Health Services Research Institute

Purpose

This study aims to describe the development and approach of a theory-informed social marketing intervention that aimed to promote respite for carers of people with dementia. Despite a high need for respite, carers of people with dementia are often low users of available respite services. The reasons for this are complex, including knowledge, attitudinal, behavioural and systemic barriers. In the context of an aging population, effective strategies to support respite use by carers of people with dementia are needed.

Design/methodology/approach

Via formative research, the authors gained an in-depth understanding of a hard-to-reach and vulnerable group (carers of people with …

© The Author(s) 2020. We used a pragmatic randomised controlled trial to evaluate a behavioural change strategy targeting carers of chronically hypoxaemic patients using long-term home oxygen therapy. Intervention group carers participated in personalised educational sessions focusing on motivating carers to take actions to assist patients. All patients received usual care. Effectiveness was measured through a composite event of patient survival to hospitalisation, residential care admission or death to 12 months. Secondary outcomes at baseline, 3, 6 and 12 months included carer and patient emotional and physical well-being. No difference between intervention (n = 100) and control (n = 97) …

Efficacy And Cultural Appropriateness Of Psychosocial Interventions For Paediatric Burn Patients And Caregivers: A Systematic Review, H Williams, K Hunter, Kathleen F. Clapham, C Ryder, R Kimble, B Griffin

Australian Health Services Research Institute

Background: Paediatric burns are highly painful and traumatising injuries that are overrepresented among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Paediatric burn patients' pain remains poorly managed by pharmacological interventions, leading to increased anxiety, distress, and trauma in patients and their caregivers. Non-pharmacological psychosocial interventions have been suggested as effective in reducing pain and psychological morbidities among paediatric burn patients and their caregivers; however, their degree of effectiveness and appropriateness for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is unclear. Methods: A non-date restricted systematic review was conducted through four databases. Studies published in English assessing psychosocial interventions on paediatric burn patients' …

Towards An Understanding Of The Burdens Of Medication Management Affecting Older People: The Memorable Realist Synthesis, Ian Maidment, Sally Lawson, Geoff Wong, Andrew Booth, Anne Watson, Hadar Zaman, Judy Mullan, Jane Mckeown, Sylvia Bailey

Australian Health Services Research Institute

BACKGROUND: More older people are living in the community with multiple diagnoses and medications. Managing multiple medications produces issues of unrivalled complexity for those involved. Despite increasing literature on the subject, gaps remain in understanding how, why and for whom complex medication management works, and therefore how best to improve practice and outcomes. MEMORABLE, MEdication Management in Older people: Realist Approaches Based on Literature and Evaluation, aimed to address these gaps. METHODS: MEMORABLE used realism to understand causal paths within medication management. Informed by RAMESES (Realist And Meta-narrative Evidence Synthesis: and Evolving Standards) guidelines, MEMORABLE involved three overlapping work packages: …

© 2020 The development of a new international legally binding instrument for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ agreement) is in the final negotiation phase. Legal recognition of rights of nature is emerging worldwide as a fresh imperative to preserve ecological integrity, safeguard human wellbeing, broaden participation in decision-making, and give a voice to nature – but so far exclusively within national jurisdiction. In this paper, we consider how a Rights of Nature perspective might inform the BBNJ agreement. We examine Rights of Nature laws and identify four characteristics relating to: i) rights; ii) …

Comparison Of Health Literacy Profile Of Patients With End-Stage Kidney Disease On Dialysis Versus Non-Dialysis Chronic Kidney Disease And The Influencing Factors: A Cross-Sectional Study, Karumathil Murali, Judy Mullan, Steven J. Roodenrys, Maureen A. Lonergan Jan 2020

Comparison Of Health Literacy Profile Of Patients With End-Stage Kidney Disease On Dialysis Versus Non-Dialysis Chronic Kidney Disease And The Influencing Factors: A Cross-Sectional Study, Karumathil Murali, Judy Mullan, Steven J. Roodenrys, Maureen A. Lonergan

Australian Health Services Research Institute

Objectives: Lower health literacy (HL) is associated with poor outcomes in patients with kidney disease. Since HL matches the patient's competencies with the complexities of the care package, the level of HL sufficient in earlier stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) may be inadequate for patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) on dialysis. We aimed to analyse the HL profile of patients with ESKD and non-dialysis CKD and examine if there were significant associations with covariates which could be targeted to address HL deficits, thereby improving patient outcomes. Design and setting: Cross-sectional study of patients with CKD and ESKD from …

The Relationship Between Emotion Dysregulation And Postnatal Attachment In Women Admitted To A Mother Baby Unit, Elloise Brake, David Berle, Nicole M. Reilly, Marie-Paule Austin

Australian Health Services Research Institute

Objective: Mothers with insecure attachment styles may have increased difficulty establishing secure attachment with their infant and may experience emotion regulation difficulties in the postpartum period. This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of emotion dysregulation (ED) on the relationship between maternal insecure attachment style and self-reported attachment to infant in women admitted to a mother-baby unit. Methods: At admission, women completed self-report questionnaires measuring attachment style, ED, postnatal attachment and postnatal depression (PND) symptoms. Descriptive statistics, correlations, and mediation analyses (PROCESS macro) were conducted. Results: Insecure maternal attachment style was found to predict postnatal attachment through ED. When …
