The relationship between adjunctive behaviour, in the form of schedule-induced drinking, and escape-avoidance behaviour was investigated, using rats as subjects. Escape-avoidance behaviour consisted of vacating the site of intermittent food delivery and then staying away from the food site. Independent groups were run on fixed-time schedules ranging from 30 seconds to 240 seconds. Groups were run either in a small chamber that prevented movement away from the food site or in a large chamber that allowed considerable movement away from the food site. Surface Flashover Studies And Electric Field Computations To Optimize The Design Of Conductor-Solid Insulator Geometry In Vacuum., Arunachalam Sivathanu. Pillai

The surface flashover strength of cylindrical and conical solid insulators has been investigated in ultra-high vacuum (< 10('-8) Torr) using DC, AC (60 Hz) and lightning impulse and a combination of a DC and impulse and a DC and AC. In general the DC and the impulse flashover voltages for a fixed length of the insulator are almost the same (within (+OR-)5%) and the AC flashover voltage is lower than the DC and the impulse. The combined DC (+OR-) 1.2/50 (mu)s impulse flashover voltage of cylindrical and conical solid insulators in vacuum is influenced by the applied DC pre-stress. A DC pre-stress causes an increase in the subsequent flashover values of the AC superimposed on DC. In general the flashover voltage of solid insulators are independent of the pressure in the range 10('-8) to 6 x 10('-3) Torr. The effects of ultra-violet (UV) light on the electrical performance of solid insulator in vacuum has been studied. The UV irradiation on solid insulator-vacuum interface degrades the electrical performance of the insulator. A method for calculating the DC surface flashover voltage of cylindrical insulators based on the assumption that the discharge occurs in a layer of desorbed gases from the insulator surface has been proposed. The effect of surface charge accumulation on the field distribution has been studied by assuming different patterns of surface charge distributions. The results showed that for a heterocharge accumulation the electric field is enhanced at both the cathode and the anode electrode junctions and for a homocharge accumulation the field enhancement is on the surface of the insulator away from the electrode junctions. In the case of a positive charge accumulation throughout the surface of the solid insulator, an enhancement in the field is found at the cathode and a reduction in the field value at the anode. The electric field distribution along the solid insulator-vacuum interface is computed and analyzed for a cylindrical insulator with metal inserts, cylindrical insulator placed in recessed electrodes, cylindrical insulator with convex curved edges, cylindrical insulator with concave curved edges and cylindrical insulator with metal inserts and placed in recessed electrodes. The electrode-insulator geometry which gives the best performance has been suggested.Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Three 4-azidobenzenesulfonates were studied as potential reversible and irreversible inhibitors (photoaffinity labeling reagents) of the human erythrocyte anion exchange system by monitoring their effect on the rate of {('35)S}-sulfate self-exchange at equilibrium. In the dark 4-azido, 2-nitro-4-azido, and 3,5-diiodo-4-azidobenzenesulfonates were reversible inhibitors of sulfate self-exchange with 50% inhibition concentrations (ID(,50) values) of 8.6 (+OR-) 0.46, 0.86 (+OR-) 0.007 and 0.40 (+OR-) 0.004 mM, respectively. If the compounds were first photolyzed at 350 nm and then checked as reversible inhibitors the first two were less potent (ID(,50)'s doubled) while the diiodo compound became a much more potent inhibitor. 4-Deoxy-4-Fluoro-D-Glucose: A Novel Membrane Probe In Pseudomonas Putida., Tony. D'Amore

Glucose grown whole cells of Pseudomonas putida do not oxidize 4-deoxy-4-fluoro-D-glucose (4FG). Instead, an extensive release of fluoride ion occurs in which no defluorinated sugar could be detected. Cytoplasmic membrane vesicles and cell-free extracts from this organism oxidize 4FG to the extent of 1 mol oxygen mol substrate('-1) with retention of the carbon-fluorine bond. The defluorination reaction displays saturation kinetics with an apparent K(,m) of 3.9 mM and an apparent V(,max) of 1 nmol fluoride mg protein('-1) min('-1). The reaction is inhibited in the presence of glucose, gluconate or 2-ketogluconate. Growth of cells on gluconate or 2-ketogluconate does not affect …

Experimental and theoretical investigations were carried out in a pilot plant size, Pease-Anthony Venturi scrubber for liquid to gas ratios ranging between 3 and 14 U.S. Gal of H(,2)O/1000 scf of air and throat gas Velocities of 150, 200 and 250 ft/s in order to obtain fundamental data on: (i) jet penetration lengths; (ii) liquid distribution; (iii) energy losses. Maximum jet centre-line penetrations were measured for nozzle diameters varying from 0.055 to 0.152 inches and correlated according to: (l**/d(,o)) = 0.11 ((rho)(,j) V(,j)/(rho)(,G) V(,g,th)). This study examined the effectiveness of advice for coping with interpersonal conflicts. The focus was on helping with psychological stress and the maintenance of relationships. Recently, advice-giving has been viewed from an attributional framework, a theory emphasizing causality. Brickman et al. (1981), however, suggest the need to consider also the attributions of responsibility for solution. Moreover, strategies focusing on intentions and outcome are quite common but have not been studied systematically within an advice-giving paradigm. This experiment included 320 undergraduate females. The Metabolism Of 3-Deoxy-3-Fluoro-D-Glucose By The Fat Body And Flight Muscle Of Locusta Migratoria., Moses Yawo. Agbanyo

The metabolism of 3-deoxy-3-fluoro-D-glucose (3FG) by flight muscle and fat body homogenates of locusts was investigated by initially examining the extent of oxygen consumption with 3FG as substrate. 3FG was not only found to be metabolised by both homogenates at a much slower rate (compared to glucose), but also inhibited oxygen consumption from glucose. The presence of aldose reductase (EC.1.1.1.21, alditol: NADP('+) 1-oxidoreductase), and sorbitol dehydrogenase EC.1.1.1.14, alditol:NAD('+)5-oxidoreductase) enzymes have been shown to be present in the flight muscle of locusts, with the flight muscle enzymes exhibiting a higher affinity for their respective natural substrates compared to the fat body …
