Adhd Symptoms And Inattentional Blindness In An Undergraduate Sample, Katherine Rose Matchett Jan 2023

Adhd Symptoms And Inattentional Blindness In An Undergraduate Sample, Katherine Rose Matchett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The relationship between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and the phenomenon of inattentional blindness has received little empirical attention, with only a single published study on the topic. The purpose of the present study was to investigate individual differences in ADHD symptom severity in a non-clinical, undergraduate sample as they relate to susceptibility to inattentional blindness. Because research conducted in an individual differences framework requires the use of reliable measurement instruments, the present study also set out to develop and pilot a task that could induce inattentional blindness repeatedly and reliably in the same participants. The results showed that a) the measure …

A Hybrid Hypothesis For Understanding The Relation Between Adhd Symptoms, Facebook Use, And Social Distress And Loneliness, Shanna Deasley Oct 2020

A Hybrid Hypothesis For Understanding The Relation Between Adhd Symptoms, Facebook Use, And Social Distress And Loneliness, Shanna Deasley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Emerging research has explored how ADHD is related to Facebook and social media use. This study explored whether a hybrid hypothesis of the social compensation and cross-situational continuity hypotheses would explain potential inconsistencies in the Facebook usage of people with higher levels of ADHD symptoms. Specifically, the hybrid hypothesis proposed that people with social deficits have social motivations for using Facebook; however, they may not benefit from online interactions due to enacting the same problematic social behaviors that they do in offline settings. This study compared 87 young adults with different levels of ADHD symptoms on their Facebook usage patterns, …

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Play-Based Full-Day Kindergarten: Educator Perceptions, Erica Miklas Jul 2020

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder And Play-Based Full-Day Kindergarten: Educator Perceptions, Erica Miklas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ADHD is one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders, and the numbers only continue to rise. Early identification is an effective way to reduce the number and severity of behaviours that children may show in elementary school; therefore, Ontario’s play-based Full-Day Kindergarten (FDK) program offers the ideal opportunity to intervene with strategies that will set the child up for social, emotional, and academic success. In conducting this study, the researcher presents and interprets educators’ perceptions of the FDK program and the role the FDK program plays in fostering the parent-educator relationship. Using an Ecological Systems Theory lens, semi-structured interviews were …

The Development Of A Scale To Detect Feigned Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) In Adults, Sanya Sagar Oct 2017

The Development Of A Scale To Detect Feigned Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd) In Adults, Sanya Sagar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by a pattern of attentional deficits, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity that tends to persist into adulthood for a subset of the individuals affected. In an attempt to address the high base rate of feigned ADHD in university settings (estimates ranging from 25 to 50% of those assessed), the objective of the present study was to develop and validate the Hyperactivity/Inattention Trait Scale (HITS), specifically designed to differentiate between feigned and genuine adult ADHD. The HITS was administered online to a sample of undergraduate students, along with several performance validity tests, aimed at detecting …

The Variations Of Facebook Usage And Social Well-Being In Emerging Adults With Symptoms Of Adhd, Shanna Deasley Jan 2016

The Variations Of Facebook Usage And Social Well-Being In Emerging Adults With Symptoms Of Adhd, Shanna Deasley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The popularity of Facebook as an extension to the social lives of emerging adults has led to research examining how individuals with social impairments use the site. Social challenges are often experienced by individuals with ADHD; therefore, the present study examined the patterns of Facebook use for emerging adults with varying levels of ADHD symptoms. A total of 241 emerging adults completed online questionnaires about their level of ADHD symptoms, as well as Facebook use patterns. Higher ADHD symptoms were found to be related to using the active and communication features of Facebook, having companionship motivations, and having more responsive …

Parentification, Coping, And Distress In Siblings Of Individuals With And Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Aranda Christine Wingsiong Oct 2015

Parentification, Coping, And Distress In Siblings Of Individuals With And Without Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (Adhd), Aranda Christine Wingsiong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Parentification refers to the intergenerational role-reversal within a family wherein a child is assigned the adult caregiving role. Typically-developing siblings of individuals with developmental disabilities often experience increased caregiving responsibilities compared to their peers (Cuskelly & Gunn, 2003) and face unique challenges within their sibling relationship (Petalas et al., 2009), which may place them at a greater risk for parentification. The purpose of the current study was to compare parentification experiences, coping strategies, and social and behavioural adjustment between 30 siblings (age 17 to 25 years) of individuals with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and 179 siblings of individuals without disabilities. Contrary …

Eye Tracking As A Behavioural Measure Of Impulsivity, Abirami R. Kandasamy Oct 2015

Eye Tracking As A Behavioural Measure Of Impulsivity, Abirami R. Kandasamy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Computerized testing provides insight into behaviours difficult to measure in traditional paper-pencil testing, such as impulsivity. Eye-tracking was recorded during the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, Fourth Edition digital stimulus book administration and output (saccadic speed, pupillary dilation, fixation duration, and reaction time) was used to predict impulsivity, as measured by the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale - Eleventh Edition. Demographic factors including ADHD diagnosis, age, gender, handedness, and SES were considered. Participants were 64 undergraduate students (50 women) at a medium-sized, ethnically diverse, university in southwestern Ontario. Hierarchical regressions showed greater impulsivity predicted lower PPVT-IV Standard Scores. Slower reaction-time and smaller pupil …

An Examination Of Fine Motor Control In Children With Adhd, Vilija M. Petrauskas Jan 2014

An Examination Of Fine Motor Control In Children With Adhd, Vilija M. Petrauskas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity impulsivity, or both. Although fine motor difficulties are frequently found in children diagnosed with ADHD, often they are not identified and are undertreated. The present study examined fine motor control in children with ADHD in several ways, including through the use of digitizing technology, and compared it to that of control children. Thirty-eight children with ADHD and 28 control children in grades four through eight were administered a measure of handwriting (Test of Handwriting Skills - Revised; THS-R), a pattern completion task (Repeated Patterns Test; RPT), …

The Automaticity And Mean Stylus Pressure Profile Of Handwriting In Adults With Adhd, Marc Demers Jan 2014

The Automaticity And Mean Stylus Pressure Profile Of Handwriting In Adults With Adhd, Marc Demers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

ADHD is a neurobiological disorder typically developed and diagnosed in childhood (Faraone et al., 2003). Impaired motor function is commonly observed in individuals with ADHD, but often overlooked (Brossard-Racine et al. 2011; Meyer and Sagvolden, 2006). Deficits in movement accuracy and increased movement variability can have a profound impact on fine motor skills, such as handwriting (Adi-Japha et al., 2007). The purpose of this study was to determine if automaticity during a handwriting task is impaired in adults with ADHD. The results of this study indicated that adults with ADHD do not have reduced automaticity in their handwriting, but do …
