Coming Of Age In Covid-19: An Ethnographic Study On The University Of Vermont Community, Miranda Whitley Miller

UVM College of Arts and Sciences College Honors Theses

This project examines how undergraduate students and administration at one particular institution, the University of Vermont, experienced, responded to, and understood the social effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. As one of the first U.S. colleges to go into lockdown during March 2020, and a primary medical center of the state of Vermont, the University of Vermont played a unique role in the still-unfolding pandemic. This autoethnographic study explored students’ and administrators’ experiences and reflections on how the first three years of Covid-19 affected everyday life, documenting both how these years continue to shape social interactions and power relations on campus, …

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presented a unique opportunity to study the effects of increased screen time on student mental health. Honors students were an ideal group to study due to perfectionism, academic achievement, and educational aspirations. Emerging research suggests that increased screen time increases anxiety, but never had there been such a marked increase in screen time. Purpose: The aim of this pilot study was to observe the relationships between anxiety, screen time, and physical activity in Honors students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: A REDCap survey, consisting of the GAD-7 measure of anxiety, screen time questionnaire, …

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

This study compares self-reported levels of sex- and romantic relationship-related distress, along with self-concept scores and perceived effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, in American college students before (Time 1) and after (Time 2) the onset of COVID-19 restrictions in the United States. It was hypothesized that participants would experience higher levels of distress and more negative self-concepts during Time 2 than during Time 1. Participants included 146 college students aged 18 to 23 years old from various schools, mainly the University of Vermont. Participants were given an online questionnaire asking questions about their current romantic and sexual beliefs and behaviors …

The Effect Of The Covid-19 Pandemic On Body Weight In The U.S.A., Lindsay Williams

UVM Patrick Leahy Honors College Senior Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a global health and economic crisis with some unforeseen consequences such as the rise in obesity. This thesis will provide a quantitative assessment of the effect of the pandemic on food consumption and body weight in the United States. I will extend the Ramsey (1928) Cass (1965) Koopmans (1965) economic growth model to include the Schofield (1985) equation which connects food consumption and body weight over time. I present theoretical results and run simulations of the model to describe the evolution of food consumption and body weight in the United States as a result …

Rubenstein School Leadership for Sustainability Project Publications

The Covid 19 pandemic has led to significant changes within the theatre industry. During this time, many of my colleagues and I committed to a process of assessing and attending to some of the harmful practices that have permeated our systems and the culture of our venues. This capstone project emerged from this process and focused on the questions: What harm and healing is currently happening in our community? How might we honor the wisdom that is emerging to support liberation, healing, and deepened accountability practices? Throughout this project I engaged with a suite of methods that focused on my …

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, with most skin cancer deaths attributed to malignant melanoma. Early detection and recognition of melanoma through full body skin exam screenings and biopsies is critical to identify early-stage melanoma and decrease progression to metastasis. The COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic led to a significant disruption in the volume and format of routine dermatologic outpatient care. In Vermont, the pandemic caused two months of a near hospital-wide shut down at the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) and a prolonged period of reduced clinic appointments beginning in March 2020. Telemedicine …
