The Aloha+ Challenge Dashboard 2.0 project explores an inclusive, decolonizing approach to advance sustainability in Hawaiʻi through the value of data and communications to inspire action. Master's Project: Tending To Joy, Karen Leu

Rubenstein School Leadership for Sustainability Project Publications

If we dare to hope for the thriving of humans and all of life, then joy must hold a solid place in our imagination. The purpose of this project was to breathe joy into my own life and into the world around me. Following a literature review, I carried out three mini-projects – creating crowd-sourced collages out of what brings people joy, sending daily text messages with quotes about joy, and providing cookies to groups working on social change efforts. The projects succeeded in spreading delight, raising spirits, and inspiring reflection. The journey towards cultivating joy in my own life …

This project explored the role that relationship with and within a place can play in fostering environmental and community ethics at Riverstone International School in Boise, Idaho. Riverstone International School is an organization recognized for its academic achievement and outdoor program, however, recent events and dialogues have indicated that it does not necessarily always outwardly or inwardly embody right environmental or social relationships. This project focused primarily on two groups, with different, but ultimately convergent objectives: 1) teachers remembering stories associated with the place and, 2) students reimagining what environmental stewardship could look like. Each of these processes provided an …

When I awakened to the reality of my White privilege I began a transformative learning journey which implicates my personal life, professional work, and leadership practice. This project deepened and integrated my understanding of Whiteness, power, privilege, and systemic oppression. By learning the ways I perpetuate white supremacy, I create personal agency for changing such patterns, embodying leadership which builds a more equitable and justice-centered future. This personal inquiry utilized emergent strategy, relationship-building, and critical reflection to generate deep and integrated learning.

Master's Project: A Journey Toward Energy Justice, Alayna Howard

Rubenstein School Leadership for Sustainability Project Publications

This project examines a non-profit organization focused on sustainable energy solutions and their efforts to make energy more affordable. Drawing on the concept of energy justice, which has been called a “new cross-cutting social science research agenda, which seeks to apply justice principles to energy policy, energy production and systems, and energy consumption” (Jenkins, McCauley, Heffron, Stephan, & Rehner, 2016), I explore the alignment between the organization's mission statement "to enhance the economic, environmental, and societal benefits of clean and efficient energy use for all people" and its manifestation in operations and decision-making. I provide recommendations and resources that integrates …
