The focus of this research is on the preparation of a deuterated organic scintillation detector for fast and high energy neutron spectroscopy. The underlying physics of organic scintillation detectors, the process in which a neutron undergoes interaction with the detector material, as well as the readout and data processing procedure is introduced.

For methodology, a comprehensive setup of an EJ301-D deuterated organic scin- tillation detector is detailed. This includes algorithmic development for three distinct purposes. Firstly, it involves the creation of iterative unfolding algorithms, specif- ically the GRAVEL and Maximum Likelihood Expectation-Maximization (MLEM)

A mobile radiological search system (MRSS) is frequently used in nuclear security to interdict illicit nuclear material. One difficulty an MRSS faces is in characterizing its detectors’ background responses, particularly in its neutron counter(s). This difficulty adds complications to identifying the presence of neutron-emitting radiological materials during an operation. Fortunately, previous work has identified a power law relationship between muons registered by the MRSS’s gamma detectors and background neutrons. Robotic milling offers new opportunities for discrete part manufacturing as an alternative to milling using large conventional machine tools. The advantage of industrial robots is their large work volume, configurability, and comparatively low cost. However, robots are significantly less stiff than conventional machine tools, which can lead to poor surface finish, low machining accuracy, and low material removal rates. A hallmark of pubertal development is the rise in gonadal hormone secretions and the subsequent onset of sexual behavior. The size of the somatosensory genital cortex increases in response to both this rise in gonadal steroid hormones and sexual experience. However, whether specific markers of brain plasticity are similarly impacted by gonadal hormones during puberty is not known. Perineuronal nets (PNNs) are specialized extracellular matrix structures that unsheathe neurons as they mature, and their maturation coincides with the closure of sensitive periods across several sensory systems. Glyphosate resistance among weed species has been an increasing problem in crop production over the past two decades. Glyphosate resistant Erigeron canadensis (horseweed) has been found on multiple continents and 20 U.S. states. It appears that the resistance is of non-target type, with mechanisms of action that have yet to be elucidated at the gene level. For the first portion of the study, I focused on reproducing the original indirect organogenesis protocol but discovered biotype variability can influence regeneration success. Many states throughout the Southeast have documented declines in wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) harvest and estimates of recruitment in poult-per-hen ratios. Wild turkey populations are driven by seasonal productivity, so the decline in these parameters may indicate a decline in the overall population. One hypothesis as to why we are seeing a reduction in productivity and a potential population decline is that the spring hunting season is disrupting the reproductive cycle by harvesting too many males before they have had the opportunity to breed, or by harvesting dominant males and disrupting the social hierarchy of the flock. As CMOS process nodes scale to smaller feature sizes, process optimizations are made to achieve improvements in digital circuit performance, such as increasing speed and memory, while decreasing power consumption. Unfortunately for analog design, these optimizations usually come at the expense of poorer transistor performance, such as reduced small signal output resistance and increased channel length modulation. Stable transformation of soybean (Glycine max) is a markedly slow and laborious process. Thus, a tool that enables rapid evaluation of genetic elements in planta is critical to advance complex research and genetic engineering in soybean. To that end, a substantially robust agroinfiltration method was innovated in this work. Agroinfiltration is a technique that leverages Agrobacterium-mediated transient transformation to deliver genetic elements to the cells of whole plant tissues, usually leaves. Around 40% of global energy consumption and 30% of worldwide carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are attributed to buildings. Most of this consumption is dedicated to ensuring thermal comfort. The goal of this research was to develop and field validate retrofit solutions to improve the energy efficiency of buildings. Exterior cladding panels were designed and tested to ensure adequate thermal and structural performance. Past research has made competing claims on whether relying on gut feelings or reasoned analysis leads to better decisions. However, these competing claims may be due to the types of decisions being made. This study investigated the associations between non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), impulsivity, automatic associations with pain, and their combined impact on self-reported capability. The research hypotheses were tested using a sample of 226 participants (182 women, 40 men, and 4 individuals identifying outside the gender binary) recruited from the Department of Psychology participant pool at the University of Tennessee.

An Implicit Association Test (IAT) was employed to measure automatic associations between pain/relief and good/bad. Research suggests that preterm infants struggle to meet developmental milestones in the same way that their full-term counterparts do, especially when it comes to their language development. This thesis examines the place of cows and agriculture in nuclear fallout research at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. The 1945 Trinity atomic bomb test exposed a herd of grazing Hereford cattle in Alamogordo, New Mexico, to radioactive fallout. The U.S. Army shipped this herd to Oak Ridge which led to the establishment of the University of Tennessee-Atomic Energy Commission Agricultural Research Laboratory (UT-AEC). The UT-AEC laboratory studied the Alamogordo herd until 1964 to understand the long-term effects of radiation. This thesis research evaluates the macrobotanical assemblage identified in soil samples from contexts collected throughout the South Pavilion kitchen space (44AB089) at Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello plantation in Charlottesville, Virginia. My primary research objectives strive to establish what types of plant remains are represented in soil samples recovered from three stratigraphically assigned temporal periods in this late eighteenth-century kitchen space.
