International Journal of Nuclear Security
The demand for nuclear energy is steadily increasing all over the world. Most nuclear power is used for peaceful applications such as power generation, healthcare, agriculture, food security, industry, and research. One of the primary applications of nuclear energy is the generation of electricity through nuclear power plants based on nuclear reactors. Many developing countries around the world (such as Bangladesh) are moving toward nuclear power plants because they have huge advantages, including low-cost energy, reliable energy sources, zero carbon emissions, and high energy concentration. As a result, the demand for nuclear reactor protection and operational protection of nuclear power …

This short reflective essay captures several transitional thoughts as Movement and Being: The Journal of the Christian Society for Kinesiology, Leisure and Sports Studies transitions the editorship of the journal. The following pages offer an examination of the strengths/assets of the journal as well as a “snapshot” of some of the challenges the journal has faced in the last five years. There are several recommendations offered to continue moving the journal forward. Implementation of these suggestions are contingent upon the incoming editor’s and Board of Directors review and approval. Most important need is to think strategically about the sustainability of …

Establishing An Antiracist Foundation In School Counselor Preparation: A Self Study, Caroline Lopez-Perry, Jacob Olsen, Fedelia Suleiman, Julaina Juarez
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
This article will discuss the findings from a collaborative self-study involving two school counseling faculty, one graduate student, and an alumna of the school counseling program who is now a first-year school counselor. Given the dearth of research exploring EducatorCounselor identity development, the researchers sought to understand how faculty prepare pre-service school counselors to engage in antiracist practices through institutional and andragogical practices and how students experience these practices in developing their EducatorCounselor identity. The findings will provide a framework for antiracist foundations in school counselor preparation and illustrate the practices needed for school counselor educators to actualize antiracist work.
The Evaluation Of A Hip Hop And School Counselor Education Course, Ian P. Levy, James Norris, Lanita Jefferson
The Evaluation Of A Hip Hop And School Counselor Education Course, Ian P. Levy, James Norris, Lanita Jefferson
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
The training of future school counselors to integrate school-based mental health resources has never been as important within a climate where US schools replicate the racial violence and fear we see nationally, at the expense of wellbeing. Fostering multicultural counseling competencies in school counselors are critical for their tackling of the challenges that historically marginalized and culturally diverse individuals, groups, and communities face. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a Hip Hop-based school counselor education course on the development of graduate student’s multicultural competence. Results from qualitative analysis of course assignments indicated that graduate school …

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
School counselor educators train future professionals who will adopt a non-dual educator-counselor identity and deliver direct services to culturally diverse students and other education stakeholders. To capture select school counselor educators’ values and practices, the authors of the current study performed a descriptive phenomenological study using semi-structured interview questions to elicit the experiences of six school counselor educators who received federal funding to increase the diversity and quality of mental health services in public schools. Findings included the following five themes: 1) perspectives of professional identity; 2) equity, social justice, and inclusion; 3) pedagogical strategies in training program; 4) collaboration …
The Agile School Counselor Training Model: Fostering A Nonbinary Professional Identity, Laurie A. Carlson, Lorraine Dekruyf, Diana Gruman
The Agile School Counselor Training Model: Fostering A Nonbinary Professional Identity, Laurie A. Carlson, Lorraine Dekruyf, Diana Gruman
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
The authors offer the Agile School Counselor Training Model as a multidimensional framework that provides counselor educators and school counselors-in-training (SCITs) a visual schema for fostering a non-binary professional school counselor identity. The model covers the full spectrum of work school counselors engage in, ranging from mental health professional to educational professional, as well as a continuum of practice that ranges from a focus on the personal to a focus on the systemic. This article reviews the pendulum swings of school counselor professional identity, introduces the Agile Model, and offers implications for practice for counselor educators and SCITs.

Supporting Clinical Mental Health Counseling Doctoral Supervisors In Supervising School Counselors-In-Training: Challenges And Strategies For Integration, Yu-Hsun Peng, Derron Hilts, Yanhong Liu
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
This conceptual article underscores the critical need for tailored supervision for school counselors-in-training (SCITs), emphasizing challenges arising from differences in training, role ambiguity, and limited understanding of pK-12 educational contexts when overseen by doctoral supervisors with clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) backgrounds. We advocate for enhanced training and support for doctoral students from CMHC backgrounds to more effectively supervise SCITs. Bridging the gap between SCITs and counselor education doctoral training, we emphasize adjustments to supervision training and implications for the supervision of school counselor trainees.

Preparing School Counselors For Culturally Informed Suicide Response, Emily C. Brown, Mary Edwin, Lucy Purgason
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
The purpose of this article is to provide school counselor educators with strategies to effectively prepare school counselors to implement culturally responsive suicide intervention in their roles as educator-counselors. Informed by two theoretical models, The Attitudinal Components of Professional Development (Evans, 2002) and the Cultural Model of Suicide (Chu et al., 2010), the authors share strategies for building self-awareness, teaching about culturally responsive practices, using case studies, and delivering course-specific instruction in multiple classes: ethics, assessment, lifespan development, foundations of school counseling, and clinical courses. The provided strategies help school counselor educators promote reflection, increase knowledge, and enhance skill development …

The Pursuit Of A Combined Educator-Counselor Identity: Gaps And Opportunities In School Counselor Training Scholarship, Ian Levy, Natalie A. Edirmanasinghe, Kara Ieva, Sam Steen
Teaching and Supervision in Counseling
This special issue focuses exclusively on the training of future school counselors to adopt a non-dual and non-hierarchical identity as an EducatorCounselor. It is long documented that the school counselors’ straddling the worlds of education and counseling have led to identity and role confusion. Concerns about school counselors’ identity have persisted amidst changes in the counseling profession and resulted in a notable schism among leaders and professional associations. Building on the Levy and Lemberger-Truelove (2021) proposition that school counselors are EducatorCounselors, or school-building educators who consistently engage in educational tasks while being oriented by counseling, articles within this special issue …

This literature review article aims to examine articles and book chapters published from 2010 to 2023 with a geographic focus on North America that discuss how and why librarians have promoted gold OA to faculty. The literature reviewed suggests that librarians should focus …
Constraint-Based Latent Profile Analysis To Investigate The Physical Activity Market Segments Among Chinese College Students, Jeeyoon Kim
Journal of Applied Sport Management
A segmentation study is conducted via constraint-based latent profile analysis (based on the hierarchical model of leisure constraint), focusing on Chinese college students. Multi-profile analysis further compares key determinants (i.e., constraints/motives) of physical activity intention by profile. Three profiles emerged: ‘body image-conscious physically active’, ‘noncommittal but achievement-driven’, and ‘constrained but motivated by enjoyment/socialization’. Each profile reports distinctive patterns in perceived levels of constraints, motives, and intention. Constraints/motives identified as determinants for intention vary by profile. Compared to North America, China tends to have more college students seeing physical activity as a task than leisure. Profile-specific marketing strategies are suggested.

Salary Disparity And Team Performance: An Empirical Analysis Of The English Premier League, Alexander Traugutt, Jarid Morton
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The English Premier League (EPL) is the top-tier English soccer system, becoming one of the most popular sports leagues in the world. One topic within the EPL that has garnered significant attention is player compensation and roster construction. Given the varied outputs of players and the spending power of each club, the question becomes whether a specific type of pay structure maximizes on-field performance. Thus, this study aimed to understand the effect of intra-team salary disparity on performance. Results indicated that while rosters tend to be organized in a more compressed manner, salary disparity was not a significant predictor of …

SMART Policy Briefs
KEY POINTS
-
In 2022, Tennessee decriminalized fentanyl test strips (FTS) through Public Chapter 764. Thousands have since been distributed by the state and nonprofit coalitions as a key harm reduction strategy. As of the end of 2023, 44 other states and D.C. had also decriminalized FTS.
-
Research indicates that people who use drugs are five times as likely to change their behaviors (including reducing drug use overall) in response to a test result that is positive for fentanyl. People who use methamphetamine are especially likely to change their behaviors.
-
However, the law only applies to “narcotic testing equipment used to …
How Preseason Hope Impacts Fans’ Attendance Intentions And Psychological Well-Being, Hyun-Woo Lee, Seong-Jin Park, Kun Chang, Jun-Phil Uhm
How Preseason Hope Impacts Fans’ Attendance Intentions And Psychological Well-Being, Hyun-Woo Lee, Seong-Jin Park, Kun Chang, Jun-Phil Uhm
Journal of Applied Sport Management
The authors developed a two-factor preseason hope scale and examined the moderation effects of preseason hope and state hope on the chain of effects from team identification and attendance intention to subjective well-being. A moderated–moderated mediation model was tested (n=224). Consequently, attendance intention mediated the relationship between team identification and well-being. The effect of team identification on attendance intention was stronger for those with lower preseason hope and state hope. The effect of attendance intention on well-being was stronger for those with higher preseason hope. Interaction effects by levels of hope were found among the conditional indirect effects.

Chronic Inequities: Environmental & Structural Racism During Covid-19 And Hurricane Laura Disaster Recovery, Tomeka M. Robinson, Sabrina Singh
Chronic Inequities: Environmental & Structural Racism During Covid-19 And Hurricane Laura Disaster Recovery, Tomeka M. Robinson, Sabrina Singh
Critical Disaster Studies
The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the realities of systemic health inequities within the United States. While the virus has severely impacted the entire country, people of color bear the brunt of this pandemic, from surges of COVID-19 cases in their communities to spikes in unemployment rates. Simultaneously, citizens are dealing with the impacts of natural disasters such as hurricanes along the Gulf Coast. The common denominator concerning these two stressors is that they can be exacerbated by institutional racism. This can be seen in the case of a small city in Southwest Louisiana, namely, Lake Charles, which has become a …

Book Review: The Shaming State: How The U.S. Treats Citizens In Need, Steve Matthewman
Critical Disaster Studies
Salman’s book centers two different constituencies, in two different locations, in the 2010s, who have been impacted by two different disasters. The first group are Iraqi refugees who have been resettled in Wayne County, Michigan. Trying to start again over half a world away, they are trapped in the transit lounge of life, never able to move on, never able to properly belong. They found a state in recession, the automobile industry collapsing, the city of Detroit bankrupt. Their particular county had higher unemployment than the state’s average and a poor median income as well. Economically speaking, ‘Michigan fared worse …
Designing Sustainable Systems Using Nature’S Toolbox, Matthew J. Hasenjager
Designing Sustainable Systems Using Nature’S Toolbox, Matthew J. Hasenjager
Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
Supporting the Earth’s human population without destabilizing planetary processes is the central challenge of sustainability science. Key to achieving this goal is designing systems that are robust and resilient to dynamic and unpredictable conditions. Bioinspiration leverages naturally evolved solutions to address such challenges, yet a solution derived from one-to-one correspondence between a natural and artificial challenge can be limited in its broader application. Here we advocate for an approach to nature-inspired design that forgoes mimicking specific solutions in favor of identifying general design features that enable natural systems to function. These features are not specific to any naturally evolved solution …
Flash Floods Climatology And Emergency Management Considerations In The County Warning Area Of The Morristown, Tn, Weather Forecasting Office, Emily Litrakis
Flash Floods Climatology And Emergency Management Considerations In The County Warning Area Of The Morristown, Tn, Weather Forecasting Office, Emily Litrakis
Select or Award-Winning Individual Scholarship
Flash floods typically occur from heavy rainfall events that cause a rapid inundation of land, usually in under 6 hours. The Southeastern United States has unique geographic features that make this region more susceptible to heavy rainfall events and flash floods. In this region, there has also been an increase in temperature which subsequently can lead to higher precipitation rates and sea-level rise. Forecasters at the National Weather Service (NWS) encounter difficulties in predicting flash flood events because of such variability in factors contributing to the occurrence of flash floods. Forecasters work closely with EMs in their County Warning Area …

Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings
We studied the spawning ecology of Alligator Gar, Atractosteus spatula, in the Fourche LaFave River (FLR) of Arkansas to better understand their reproductive ecology and spawning resource requirements. Evidence of spawning was only observed in floodplain tributary habitats, particularly the small, adventitious headwater stream West Fork Mill Creek (WFMC). A mid-May to mid-June spawning season was observed for Alligator Gar in the FLR that corresponded with rising water levels (mostly due to backflooding from the Arkansas River) and increased water temperatures (> 20°C). Direct spawning observations at WFMC were made on 17 June 2007, 15 June 2008, 23 May …
The Long And Winding Road: What Comes Next After Detox, Michelle Pryce, Karen Lasater
The Long And Winding Road: What Comes Next After Detox, Michelle Pryce, Karen Lasater
Graduate Publications and Other Selected Works - Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
BACKGROUND: Detoxification centers are specialized facilities treating patients with substance use disorder (SUD). The detoxification process is a medically managed treatment where substances are slowly weaned from the body. This process lasts approximately 5-7 days. Most patients meet the criteria for SUD upon admission, but do not seek specialized post-discharge treatment, which has been found to increase long-term sobriety.
LOCAL PROBLEM: The site was a 16-bed adult detoxification center located in South Carolina. The operations manager identified there was no standardized discharge educational planning process to support long-term sobriety. This project’s aim was to increase the percentage of …
Attention, Curiosity, And Pleasurable Solitude Within Adventure Games: A Reading Of Realmyst: Masterpiece Edition And Paradise Killer, Hannah J. Trammell
Attention, Curiosity, And Pleasurable Solitude Within Adventure Games: A Reading Of Realmyst: Masterpiece Edition And Paradise Killer, Hannah J. Trammell
Masters Theses
The project examines Paradise Killer and RealMyst: Masterpiece Edition as two games exemplary of the adventure game genre that evoke specific affects uniquely collocated within the genre itself. Previous research from authors like Aubrey Anable and Katherine Isbister has shown that video games make players feel and that what they make players feel is important to study. Like the novel and film before, video games are undergoing a legitimation process as objects worthy of study and cultural critique, and it is necessary to begin parsing how their multimedia existence relates to previous categories of genre and audience response. Using scholarship …

Two Essays On The Economics Of Global Food Demand, Savant Nzayiramya
Masters Theses
This study provides an understanding of global consumption patterns across major spending and food categories using data from the 2017 International Comparison Program (ICP). The first chapter examines the demand for food and non-food items across 162 countries using the Quadratic Almost Ideal Demand System (QUAIDS) to estimate demand for nine spending categories: food, clothing, furnishings, transport, housing, health, recreation, education, and miscellaneous. We calculated expenditure, own-price, cross-price elasticities, and marginal shares across these spending categories and performed a welfare analysis to determine the compensation required to maintain the same utility following inflationary periods. The findings indicate that food is …
Milling Stability Map Identification And Machining Parameter Optimization Using Bayesian Inference, Aaron William Cornelius
Milling Stability Map Identification And Machining Parameter Optimization Using Bayesian Inference, Aaron William Cornelius
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation describes a physics-guided Bayesian learning approach for statistically modelling and optimizing machining processes under a state of uncertainty. This approach uses a series of automatically-selected cutting tests to refine uncertainties about the machining system's dynamics and cutting force and identify higher productivity cutting parameters. The algorithm is evaluated experimentally and compared to the cutting tool manufacturer’s recommendations, both in laboratory conditions and in an industrial setting to optimize the machining process for a large aluminum component. These results show that the proposed Bayesian model can quickly identify both highly-productive machining parameters and accurate information about the underlying system …
Impacts Of Climate Change On Mammalian Species Of Concern Within The Appalachian Ecoregion, Lauren M. Lyon
Impacts Of Climate Change On Mammalian Species Of Concern Within The Appalachian Ecoregion, Lauren M. Lyon
Doctoral Dissertations
Climate change and growth anthropogenic presence is a phenomenon impacting all species globally. Fortunately, with protection of key areas of suitable habitat and climate, we can alleviate the worst of biodiversity loss utilizing climate change refugia. This is apparent in the eastern United States, where the Appalachian Ecoregion naturally form a refugium compared to the surrounding landscape for many taxa and rare ecosystems. Particularly of interest are the at-risk relict boreal ecosystems found at elevation, which are otherwise restricted to the northern US and Canada, and numerous endemic taxa found only in this biodiverse region.
Recent studies have focused either …
