Understanding Early Diagenetic Silicification: Petrographic Fabrics Within Proterozoic Microfossiliferous Chert, Jeremy Ian Dunham
Understanding Early Diagenetic Silicification: Petrographic Fabrics Within Proterozoic Microfossiliferous Chert, Jeremy Ian Dunham
Masters Theses
Early diagenetic chert is abundant in Proterozoic carbonate successions and provides a critical window into organic preservation; the depositional origin of this chert, however, remains uncertain. There have been relatively few detailed petrographic analyses of Proterozoic microfossiliferous chert, which limits our understanding of both primary depositional fabrics, and of petrographic change during post-depositional recrystallization. The ~1.1 Ga Angmaat Formation, northern Baffin Island, Canada, contains abundant early diagenetic chert that contains exquisitely preserved microbial assemblages. Petrographic analysis indicates that chert is composed of four primary phases: chalcedony spherules that replace the majority of primary microbial and sedimentary elements, equigranular microcrystalline quartz …
Cementum: Discovering A Methodology Through A Historical Lens, Kortney Dewayne Powell
Cementum: Discovering A Methodology Through A Historical Lens, Kortney Dewayne Powell
Masters Theses
This light and scanning electron microscopic research documents structure and measures change in cementum of several historic African American burial ground samples dating from approximately 1820-1920. The populations these samples represent are from the First African- American Baptist Church in Philadelphia (PA), the Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Texarkana (AR), and Providence Baptist Church, Memphis (TN).This research bears dental histological, forensic and historical significance. Of the dental tissues, cementum structure is the lesser known. Because of continual deposition, annuli have been utilized in age estimation. Cementum annuli is potentially a better age-estimation tissue due to its protected alveolar bone location and …
Remote Characterization Of Physical Surface Characteristics Of Mars Using Diurnal Variations In Apparent Thermal Inertia, Cameron Blake Mccarty
Remote Characterization Of Physical Surface Characteristics Of Mars Using Diurnal Variations In Apparent Thermal Inertia, Cameron Blake Mccarty
Masters Theses
Analysis of the Martian surface today can provide insight into the processes that may have affected it over its history. Information about the physical surface characterization of a region can help determine the degree of sorting it has experienced and/or its geologic maturity. Sub-resolved “checkerboard” mixtures of materials with different horizontal thermal inertia mixtures can lead to differences in the apparent thermal inertia values inferred from night and day radiance observations. Standard methods for deriving thermal inertia from orbit via the THermal EMission Imaging System (THEMIS) can give values for the same location that vary by as much as 20% …

Masters Theses
The utilization of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) alone or in mixtures with tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbyish) or bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers) in the Southeast U.S. must be assessed so better management recommendations can be given. The objective of this first study was to determine the cumulative capacity of alfalfa in monoculture (A) and mixtures with tall fescue (ATF) and bermudagrass (AB), and its indirect improvements on the nutritive (NV). Three species combinations were utilized (A, ATF and AB) and subjected to four harvest frequencies (21, 28, 35 and 42 days) throughout the 2016 and …
Gan-Based Point-Of-Load Converters For Data Center Applications, Douglas Wayne Bouler Iii
Gan-Based Point-Of-Load Converters For Data Center Applications, Douglas Wayne Bouler Iii
Masters Theses
The growth of the information technology sector has increased demand for high-density, high-efficiency point-of-load (POL) converters. As industry continues to demand an increase in server processing power, high-current operation presents challenges to designing high-efficiency POL converters. Increased conduction and overlap losses induce significant power losses in high-power modes. The introduction of Gallium-Nitride (GaN) switching devices and the implementation of zero-current-switching (ZCS) topologies for POL applications have the potential to improve converter efficiency while maintaining or surpassing the industrial power density standard. This thesis addresses the challenges presented by high-current operation by demonstrating an accurate power loss model of the quasi-resonant …

Role Of Organic Acids In Suppression Of Sclerotium Rolfsii During Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation (Asd), Keagan James Swilling
Masters Theses
Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) is a non-chemical method used for controlling soilborne plant pathogens. Individual elements of the ASD (also referred to as biological soil disinfestation or BSD) process, including application of organic amendments or soil saturation, have been studied for over 50 years for suppression of various soilborne plant pathogens. More recent research, primarily in the Netherlands, Japan, and the United States has been targeted at developing a soil disinfestation process based on anaerobic decomposition of labile soil amendments that can be integrated into modern horticultural production systems as a soil fumigant. The process leads to the creation of …
An Investigation Of The Effects Of Corrinoid Structure On The Methanogenesis Pathway In Methanosarcina Barkeri Strain Fusaro, Amanda Marie Kennedy
An Investigation Of The Effects Of Corrinoid Structure On The Methanogenesis Pathway In Methanosarcina Barkeri Strain Fusaro, Amanda Marie Kennedy
Masters Theses
Methane is responsible for at least 10% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States alone, and although not the most abundant, it is one of the most dangerously potent greenhouse gases. Methanogens are microbial organisms that require a corrinoid cofactor to synthesize methane.Previous work in bacteria has demonstrated that corrinoid mediated processes, such as methyl transfers, are directly influenced by the structure of the corrinoid cofactor1; 2; 3. Individual organisms show bias or preference for one structure over another, with the sole difference being the lower ligand attached to the corrin ring4. Most organisms have a "preferred" corrinoid structure, …
The Non-Linear Energy Sink Applied To Vertical Floor Vibration Mitigation, James Ridge Ramsey
The Non-Linear Energy Sink Applied To Vertical Floor Vibration Mitigation, James Ridge Ramsey
Masters Theses
This thesis investigates the non-linear energy sink (NES) and its application to floor vibration mitigation. The NES is a passive type mass damper comprised of an essentially non-linear stiffness component. This non-linear stiffness property allows the NES to interact with a wide variety of frequency regimes that can vary both widely and randomly throughout flooring systems. Flooring systems are regularly subjected to these changing inputs from general use and occupancy, as well as, human and mechanical induced loading. It is known that the NES has been successfully implemented for vibration mitigation in the horizontal direction. However, to achieve this non-linearity …
Tensor Based Monitoring Of Large-Scale Network Traffic, Gerald Liso
Tensor Based Monitoring Of Large-Scale Network Traffic, Gerald Liso
Masters Theses
Network monitoring systems are important for network operators to easily analyze behavioral trends in flow data. As networks become larger and more complex, the data becomes more complex with increased size and more variables. This increase in dimensionality lends itself to tensor-based analysis of network data as tensors are arbitrarily sized multi-dimensional objects. Tensor-based network monitoring methods have been explored in recent years through work at Carnegie Mellon University through their algorithm DenseAlert. DenseAlert identifies events anomalous events in tensors through quick detection of dense sub-tensors in positive-valued tensors. However, from experimentation, DenseAlert fails on larger datasets. Drawing from RED …

Effectiveness Of Aerial And Ground-Based Acoustic Bat Detection Technologies, Adrienne Michelle Dykstra
Masters Theses
Wildlife acoustic monitoring technologies have been advancing detection capabilities in many areas of species monitoring. Detection of species using remotely deployed technologies such as acoustic detectors provides population data with little effort, supplying critical information for many research analyses. Acoustic echolocation detectors have been used to detect and identify bats for several years, with constant improvements to the technologies utilized by these detectors. Because of the limitations associated with using a ground-based detection technology to monitor species flying at unknown altitudes, we designed and tested an Aerial Bat Detection Technology (ABDT) to monitor bats in flight at various altitudes (25m, …
Investigation Of Silver Nitrate–Impregnated Alumina As An Alternative Iodine Sorbent, Jacob A. Jordan
Investigation Of Silver Nitrate–Impregnated Alumina As An Alternative Iodine Sorbent, Jacob A. Jordan
Masters Theses
United States regulations on nuclear reprocessing would limit the release of certain radioactive volatile species, including 3H, 14C, 85Kr, and 129I. Conservative analyses indicate that >99.9% of the iodine contained in used nuclear fuel could require capture. Solid sorbents for this application include silver mordenite (AgZ) and silver nitrate–impregnated alumina (AgA). AgA has been studied previously under simulated possible reprocessing conditions to assess its effectiveness as an iodine sorbent, and those results have been compared with well-characterized AgZ.To date, AgZ and AgA have been investigated for use in iodine capture from off-gas generated by aqueous fuel …

Heat Flux Model Validation Utilizing Convolutional Neural Networks And Sub-Surface Thermocouples For Nstx-U, Thomas Patrick Looby
Masters Theses
A proof of concept convolutional neural network (CNN) has been developed to assist in operating tokamaks outside of existing empirical scalings for the heat flux width, λq [lambda-q]. NSTX-U has designed new plasma facing components (PFCs) to withstand increased halo current forces as well as elevated heat fluxes driven by increased poloidal field and neutral beam power compared to NSTX. Larger graphite tiles are castellated to 2.5 cm [centimenter] x 2.5 cm [centimeter] to reduce bending stresses. Maintaining PFCs below engineering limits will be an important consideration for operation of NSTX-U. Sub-surface thermocouples will be utilized to demonstrate validation …

Me, Meat, And Mo'town: A Multisensory Ethnography Of Morristown, Tennessee, Caitlin Mize
Masters Theses
The 20th century was a time of substantial change in American farming communities. Researchers have documented the environmental and community impacts of corporate-controlled food crop production and corporate-controlled beef and pork production and processing. Far less research focuses on either corporate-controlled poultry production or processing. This project aims at those gaps in the literature with an exploratory case study of the former family farming community of Morristown, Tennessee. After analyzing literature on the characteristics that most distinguish family farming communities from corporate farming communities, I drew insights from the literature on sense of place and deployed the multisensory ethnography method. In …
Capacity Design Methods For Strongback Braced Frames, Peter C. Talley
Capacity Design Methods For Strongback Braced Frames, Peter C. Talley
Masters Theses
When subjected to strong earthquake ground motions, conventional steel braced frames are vulnerable to soft-story mechanisms, whereby the weakest story accumulates more damage relative to the rest of the structure. This reduces the overall strength of the structure, increases the cost of repairs, and can cause issues during the design process due to the reduced redundancy of the system. One method for mitigating this behavior is the use of an elastic spine frame. These frames combine a stiff vertical “spine”, such as a truss or shear wall, with a more ductile, energy-dissipating system. The spine typically spans the height of the …

Detailed Geologic Mapping Of The Parksville 7.5-Minute Quadrangle And The Kinematics Of Emplacement Of Large Horses Along The Great Smoky Fault, Southeastern Tennessee, Trenton Joel Walker
Masters Theses
The Great Smoky fault is a major Alleghanian thrust fault in the southern Appalachians that separates the highly deformed and metamorphosed Blue Ridge to the east from the less deformed and unmetamorphosed Valley and Ridge to the west. The trace of the frontal Blue Ridge, as defined by the Great Smoky fault, displays a change in strike from ~010° to ~045° in or near the Parksville 7.5-minute quadrangle in southeastern Tennessee. This change in strike defines the southern arc of the Tennessee salient, which is a convex-to-the-foreland curve in the structural front of the southern Appalachians. Along the Great Smoky …
Prisoners Present Arms: Sectarian Christians And The American Carceral State During The First World War, Joshua Ward Jeffery
Prisoners Present Arms: Sectarian Christians And The American Carceral State During The First World War, Joshua Ward Jeffery
Masters Theses
This thesis investigates the prison experiences of Arthur Dunham, Harold Gray, Evan Thomas, and other conscientious objectors to the First World War. It demonstrates that the Federal government of the United States used scientific management techniques, including the initiation of a discourse of 100% Americanism, the use of propaganda to spread this discourse, and the use of this discourse to encourage Americans to keep their friends, neighbors, and relatives under surveillance. These techniques were used together in order to create an American "carceral state" that allowed the government to surveil and discipline its population in such a way as to …
Microbial Memory Response: Observing History-Dependent Adaptation To Repeated Exposures Of Emulsified Vegetable Oil In A Contaminated Aquifer, Kathryn R. Mcbride
Microbial Memory Response: Observing History-Dependent Adaptation To Repeated Exposures Of Emulsified Vegetable Oil In A Contaminated Aquifer, Kathryn R. Mcbride
Masters Theses
The utilization of native microbial communities to remediate and immobilize hazardous contaminants has been a common practice for decades. One technique commonly employed to enhance this process is biostimulation, where limiting nutrients are added to a contaminated system in order to stimulate favorable reducing conditions for specialized microorganisms. Many biostimulation applications have been conducted using emulsified vegetable oil (EVO), which stimulates growth of indigenous microbial communities and favorable reducing conditions. However, this practice is sometimes known to cause a lag phase before degradation can occur, lessening the overall efficiency of this practice. The studies described herein aim to reduce the …

Aphid (Hemiptera: Aphididae) feeding may cause substantial loss of yield and grain quality by transmitting barley yellow dwarf (BYD) in wheat, Triticum aestivum L. Neonicotinoid seed treatments and foliar-applied insecticides are the two most common methods to manage aphid infestations and BYD. The overall goal for my research was to refine recommendations on the management of aphids in wheat to provide a consistent return on investment. An analysis was done across 33 insecticide efficacy trials in west Tennessee during the last eleven years to determine how neonicotinoid seed treatments and a late-winter foliar insecticide application affected aphid populations, incidence of …
Positive Identification Via Frontal Sinus Morphology: A Geographic Information Systems (Gis) Approach, Jenna Mackenzie Watson
Positive Identification Via Frontal Sinus Morphology: A Geographic Information Systems (Gis) Approach, Jenna Mackenzie Watson
Masters Theses
Frontal sinus radiographs are frequently used to identify human remains. However, the method of visually comparing antemortem (AM) to postmortem (PM) cranial radiographs has been critiqued for its lack of sufficient error rates and the potential of practitioner training, experience, and education to influence results (Page, et al. 2011). In an effort to provide a more quantifiable method of frontal sinus identification, this thesis explored the use of the ArcGIS mapping software, ArcMap, and its spatial analyst tool, Similarity Search, for identifying frontal sinus matches. AM and PM cranial radiographs for 100 donors from the William M. Bass Donated Skeletal …

An Investigation Into The Use Of A Mis-Tuned Rotor For Measurement Of Pressure Distortion During Wind Tunnel Inlet Integration Tests, Stephen Andrew Arnold
Masters Theses
During the development of modern aircraft, testing of sub scale models of the airframe is often done in wind tunnels to evaluate the effect that the aircraft inlet can have on the propulsion system. During these inlet integration test, special test equipment is required to vary the airflow through subscale inlet to represent an engine that varies from low to high thrust levels. A forty pressure probe array is also frequently used to characterize potential pressure defects in terms of extent (angular range of low pressure defect) and intensity. This thesis explores using a rotor with blades of different modal …

The Indianerfilme: Detailing East Germany's Reactionary Construction Of National Identity Through Propaganda Films, Joseph Karl Robinson
Masters Theses
This thesis examines the role that the Indianerfilme played in the construction of the East German national identity, explains their usefulness as an illustration of the state’s propaganda narrative, and analyzes what the films indicate about racism, masculinity, international relations, and the legacy of National Socialism in East Germany. Contextualizing the Indianerfilme within East Germany’s socioeconomic and geopolitical realities and analyzing the themes and tropes within the films reveals the Socialist Unity Party’s (SED) reactionary and contradictory characteristics. These films exemplify how the SED used the state-owned film studio, Deutsche Film-Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA), to reeducate East Germans, propagate its anti-capitalist and …
Automatic Error Detection And Correction In Laser Metal Wire Deposition - An Additive Manufacturing Technology, Adeola Idowu Adediran
Automatic Error Detection And Correction In Laser Metal Wire Deposition - An Additive Manufacturing Technology, Adeola Idowu Adediran
Masters Theses
Additive manufacturing (AM) technology involves building three-dimensional objects by adding material layer-upon-layer under computer control. Metal additive manufacturing offers new possibilities, not only in design, but also in the choice of materials. However, the additive process remains at a lower maturity level compared to the conventional subtractive processes such as milling, drilling and machining among others. Scientifically, there is a safety concern relating to the accuracy of the AM process, how printed products will perform over time and the consistency of their quality. Process accuracy and eventual part quality is compromised due to errors introduced by each of the building …
Performance Of Hagrid Array In Beta Delayed Neutron Emission Measurements, Thomas Tobias King
Performance Of Hagrid Array In Beta Delayed Neutron Emission Measurements, Thomas Tobias King
Masters Theses
One of the most prevalent decay modes of unstable nuclei is β[beta] decay. For nuclei far from stability these decays can be followed by the emission of a neutron. The Versatile Array of Neutron Detectors at Low Energy (VANDLE) is a proven detection system for measuring the energies of delayed neutrons. VANDLE has been upgraded to include high-efficiency scintillators for gamma-ray detection. This increases the sensitivity for the γ[gamma]-rays that can follow the neutron emission. These scintillator components form an array of large volume NaI detectors and the Hybrid Array of Gamma-Ray Detectors (HAGRiD), which is an array of LaBr …
