Understanding Early Diagenetic Silicification: Petrographic Fabrics Within Proterozoic Microfossiliferous Chert, Jeremy Ian Dunham Dec 2018

Understanding Early Diagenetic Silicification: Petrographic Fabrics Within Proterozoic Microfossiliferous Chert, Jeremy Ian Dunham

Masters Theses

Early diagenetic chert is abundant in Proterozoic carbonate successions and provides a critical window into organic preservation; the depositional origin of this chert, however, remains uncertain. There have been relatively few detailed petrographic analyses of Proterozoic microfossiliferous chert, which limits our understanding of both primary depositional fabrics, and of petrographic change during post-depositional recrystallization. The ~1.1 Ga Angmaat Formation, northern Baffin Island, Canada, contains abundant early diagenetic chert that contains exquisitely preserved microbial assemblages. Petrographic analysis indicates that chert is composed of four primary phases: chalcedony spherules that replace the majority of primary microbial and sedimentary elements, equigranular microcrystalline quartz …

Cementum: Discovering A Methodology Through A Historical Lens, Kortney Dewayne Powell Dec 2018

Cementum: Discovering A Methodology Through A Historical Lens, Kortney Dewayne Powell

Masters Theses

This light and scanning electron microscopic research documents structure and measures change in cementum of several historic African American burial ground samples dating from approximately 1820-1920. The populations these samples represent are from the First African- American Baptist Church in Philadelphia (PA), the Cedar Grove Baptist Church, Texarkana (AR), and Providence Baptist Church, Memphis (TN).This research bears dental histological, forensic and historical significance. Of the dental tissues, cementum structure is the lesser known. Because of continual deposition, annuli have been utilized in age estimation. Cementum annuli is potentially a better age-estimation tissue due to its protected alveolar bone location and …

Two Essays On Beef: Restaurants’ Preferences For Tennessee Certified Beef And Cattle Producers’ Preferences For Horn Fly (Haematobia Irritans (L.)) Resistant Cattle, Lettie Collett Mckay

Masters Theses

Beef cattle producers are constantly faced with decisions that will affect the profitability of their operations. Marketing avenues, product differentiation, inputs, efficiency of production, and many other factors can impact profitability. This research analyzes two aspects of the beef industry: restaurant preferences for Tennessee Certified Beef (TCB) and cattle producer preferences for horn fly (Haematobia irritans (L.)) resistant (HFR) cattle. Two surveys were developed using the contingent valuation method to estimate willingness to pay (WTP) for TCB products and HFR bulls. Previous studies have shown consumer and producer interest for TCB; however, this study of restaurant WTP provides further …

Remote Characterization Of Physical Surface Characteristics Of Mars Using Diurnal Variations In Apparent Thermal Inertia, Cameron Blake Mccarty Dec 2018

Remote Characterization Of Physical Surface Characteristics Of Mars Using Diurnal Variations In Apparent Thermal Inertia, Cameron Blake Mccarty

Masters Theses

Analysis of the Martian surface today can provide insight into the processes that may have affected it over its history. Information about the physical surface characterization of a region can help determine the degree of sorting it has experienced and/or its geologic maturity. Sub-resolved “checkerboard” mixtures of materials with different horizontal thermal inertia mixtures can lead to differences in the apparent thermal inertia values inferred from night and day radiance observations. Standard methods for deriving thermal inertia from orbit via the THermal EMission Imaging System (THEMIS) can give values for the same location that vary by as much as 20% …

Minority Stress And Lgbq College Students' Depression: Roles Of Peer Group And Involvement, Danielle Leigh Bissonette Dec 2018

Minority Stress And Lgbq College Students' Depression: Roles Of Peer Group And Involvement, Danielle Leigh Bissonette

Masters Theses

In this study, we examined the relations between LGBQ microaggressions and internalized heterosexism and depression among 568 LGBQ college students who completed an online survey. We also considered the moderating/buffering roles of positive peer group relations and involvement in LGBQ campus activities in these links. Results showed that LGBQ microaggressions and internalized heterosexism were positively related to depression at the bivariate level. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis showed that positive peer group relations moderated the relation between internalized heterosexism and depression. Internalized heterosexism predicted depression for students with low levels of positive peer group relations, but not for those with moderate …

Survival And Conflict Behavior Of American Black Bears After Release From Appalachian Bear Rescue, Coy Dale Blair Dec 2018

Survival And Conflict Behavior Of American Black Bears After Release From Appalachian Bear Rescue, Coy Dale Blair

Masters Theses

Wildlife agencies are forced to deal with difficult situations when orphaned or injured American black bear (Ursus americanus) cubs (<12 months old) or yearlings (>12 and <24 months old) are captured. However, bears have strong public support and interest and simply euthanizing orphaned animals would be opposed by much of the public. One option is bear rehabilitation. Unfortunately, the survival and movements of bears released from rehabilitation facilities are rarely documented. My goal was to assess survival and post-release conflict of orphaned bear cubs and yearlings following rehabilitation and release from a rehabilitation facility, Appalachian Bear Rescue (ABR), in Townsend, Tennessee, USA. My specific objectives were to (1) estimate first-year survival, (2) identify key variables affecting survival, (3) determine cause-specific mortality, and (4) assess conflict behavior of bears released from ABR. I hypothesized that rehabilitated bears would survive at similar rates, die from similar causes, and engage in similar conflict behavior to wild conspecifics. I equipped 42 black bear cubs and yearlings from ABR with Global Positioning System (GPS) wildlife tracking collars during 2015 and 2016 and released them in either Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) or Cherokee National Forest (CNF). I estimated survival using known-fate methods in Program MARK. Wildlife agencies provided reports of released bears in conflict situations. I estimated survival by treating lost telemetry signals as collar failure on a living bear (optimistic estimate) or as collar destruction related to mortality (pessimistic estimate). Pessimistic and optimistic estimates of overall annual survival of bears was 0.88 (SE = 0.07) and 0.93 (SE = 0.06), respectively. Survival for bears released as cubs (0.64, SE = 0.14, n = 13) was lower than for bears released as yearlings (1.00, SE = 0.00, n = 29), and the major cause of mortality was vehicular-collisions. Three of 42 bears (7.1%) released from ABR engaged in conflict up to 1 year post-release. Survival, cause-specific mortality, and engagement in post-release conflict of my study bears was similar to or higher than published reports for wild conspecifics. Bear rehabilitation should be considered a viable option for orphaned or …

Capacity Design Methods For Strongback Braced Frames, Peter C. Talley Dec 2018

Capacity Design Methods For Strongback Braced Frames, Peter C. Talley

Masters Theses

When subjected to strong earthquake ground motions, conventional steel braced frames are vulnerable to soft-story mechanisms, whereby the weakest story accumulates more damage relative to the rest of the structure. This reduces the overall strength of the structure, increases the cost of repairs, and can cause issues during the design process due to the reduced redundancy of the system. One method for mitigating this behavior is the use of an elastic spine frame. These frames combine a stiff vertical “spine”, such as a truss or shear wall, with a more ductile, energy-dissipating system. The spine typically spans the height of the …

Forage Mass, Nutritive Value And Persistence Of Alfalfa And Alfalfa Mixtures As Influenced By Forage Management, Marcia Pereira Da Silva

Masters Theses

The utilization of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) alone or in mixtures with tall fescue (Lolium arundinaceum (Schreb.) Darbyish) or bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers) in the Southeast U.S. must be assessed so better management recommendations can be given. The objective of this first study was to determine the cumulative capacity of alfalfa in monoculture (A) and mixtures with tall fescue (ATF) and bermudagrass (AB), and its indirect improvements on the nutritive (NV). Three species combinations were utilized (A, ATF and AB) and subjected to four harvest frequencies (21, 28, 35 and 42 days) throughout the 2016 and …

Prisoners Present Arms: Sectarian Christians And The American Carceral State During The First World War, Joshua Ward Jeffery Dec 2018

Prisoners Present Arms: Sectarian Christians And The American Carceral State During The First World War, Joshua Ward Jeffery

Masters Theses

This thesis investigates the prison experiences of Arthur Dunham, Harold Gray, Evan Thomas, and other conscientious objectors to the First World War. It demonstrates that the Federal government of the United States used scientific management techniques, including the initiation of a discourse of 100% Americanism, the use of propaganda to spread this discourse, and the use of this discourse to encourage Americans to keep their friends, neighbors, and relatives under surveillance. These techniques were used together in order to create an American "carceral state" that allowed the government to surveil and discipline its population in such a way as to …

Gan-Based Point-Of-Load Converters For Data Center Applications, Douglas Wayne Bouler Iii Dec 2018

Gan-Based Point-Of-Load Converters For Data Center Applications, Douglas Wayne Bouler Iii

Masters Theses

The growth of the information technology sector has increased demand for high-density, high-efficiency point-of-load (POL) converters. As industry continues to demand an increase in server processing power, high-current operation presents challenges to designing high-efficiency POL converters. Increased conduction and overlap losses induce significant power losses in high-power modes. The introduction of Gallium-Nitride (GaN) switching devices and the implementation of zero-current-switching (ZCS) topologies for POL applications have the potential to improve converter efficiency while maintaining or surpassing the industrial power density standard. This thesis addresses the challenges presented by high-current operation by demonstrating an accurate power loss model of the quasi-resonant …

Role Of Organic Acids In Suppression Of Sclerotium Rolfsii During Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation (Asd), Keagan James Swilling

Masters Theses

Anaerobic soil disinfestation (ASD) is a non-chemical method used for controlling soilborne plant pathogens. Individual elements of the ASD (also referred to as biological soil disinfestation or BSD) process, including application of organic amendments or soil saturation, have been studied for over 50 years for suppression of various soilborne plant pathogens. More recent research, primarily in the Netherlands, Japan, and the United States has been targeted at developing a soil disinfestation process based on anaerobic decomposition of labile soil amendments that can be integrated into modern horticultural production systems as a soil fumigant. The process leads to the creation of …

Positive Identification Via Frontal Sinus Morphology: A Geographic Information Systems (Gis) Approach, Jenna Mackenzie Watson Dec 2018

Positive Identification Via Frontal Sinus Morphology: A Geographic Information Systems (Gis) Approach, Jenna Mackenzie Watson

Masters Theses

Frontal sinus radiographs are frequently used to identify human remains. However, the method of visually comparing antemortem (AM) to postmortem (PM) cranial radiographs has been critiqued for its lack of sufficient error rates and the potential of practitioner training, experience, and education to influence results (Page, et al. 2011). In an effort to provide a more quantifiable method of frontal sinus identification, this thesis explored the use of the ArcGIS mapping software, ArcMap, and its spatial analyst tool, Similarity Search, for identifying frontal sinus matches. AM and PM cranial radiographs for 100 donors from the William M. Bass Donated Skeletal …

An Investigation Into The Use Of A Mis-Tuned Rotor For Measurement Of Pressure Distortion During Wind Tunnel Inlet Integration Tests, Stephen Andrew Arnold

Masters Theses

During the development of modern aircraft, testing of sub scale models of the airframe is often done in wind tunnels to evaluate the effect that the aircraft inlet can have on the propulsion system. During these inlet integration test, special test equipment is required to vary the airflow through subscale inlet to represent an engine that varies from low to high thrust levels. A forty pressure probe array is also frequently used to characterize potential pressure defects in terms of extent (angular range of low pressure defect) and intensity. This thesis explores using a rotor with blades of different modal …

I Am Because You Are: Other Group Members' Attachment Avoidance And Individual Experiences Of Negative Affect In Intergroup Dialogue, Elliott Nolan Devore Dec 2018

I Am Because You Are: Other Group Members' Attachment Avoidance And Individual Experiences Of Negative Affect In Intergroup Dialogue, Elliott Nolan Devore

Masters Theses

We investigated the relationships between attachment style and session-level process and outcome variables (i.e., group members’ perceptions of group climate, session depth and smoothness, and positive and negative affect) among 94 participants in 17 intergroup dialogues (IGD). Each participant completed an measure of adult attachment style prior to the first IGD, and measures of group climate, session depth and smoothness, and positive and negative affect following each session. We used the actor-partner interdependence model (Kenny, Mannetti, Pierro, Livi & Kashy, 2002) to examine relationships between actor (i.e., an individual group member’s attachment) and partner (i.e., the attachment scores for the …

Automatic Error Detection And Correction In Laser Metal Wire Deposition - An Additive Manufacturing Technology, Adeola Idowu Adediran Dec 2018

Automatic Error Detection And Correction In Laser Metal Wire Deposition - An Additive Manufacturing Technology, Adeola Idowu Adediran

Masters Theses

Additive manufacturing (AM) technology involves building three-dimensional objects by adding material layer-upon-layer under computer control. Metal additive manufacturing offers new possibilities, not only in design, but also in the choice of materials. However, the additive process remains at a lower maturity level compared to the conventional subtractive processes such as milling, drilling and machining among others. Scientifically, there is a safety concern relating to the accuracy of the AM process, how printed products will perform over time and the consistency of their quality. Process accuracy and eventual part quality is compromised due to errors introduced by each of the building …

Considering the negative health outcomes associated with food insecurity, and its …

The Impact Of Shared Attention On Multiple Object Tracking In Competitive And Cooperative Settings, Sydney Blaine Michelson Dec 2018

The Impact Of Shared Attention On Multiple Object Tracking In Competitive And Cooperative Settings, Sydney Blaine Michelson

Masters Theses

Shared attention theory postulates that when simultaneously co-attending to a stimulus with a similar other, cognitive prioritization occurs that has both psychological and behavioral impact, with the ultimate goal of generating collective knowledge. A cooperative scenario occurs when a group’s goal is linked such that one person’s success is also another’s. By contrast, a competitive scenario occurs when a group’s goal is linked such that if one person succeeds, the other fails. The purpose of this thesis was to understand the effect of cooperative and competitive settings on shared attention in a performance domain. I hypothesized that cooperation would moderate …

Mercury Mobilization From Contaminated Creek Bank Soils And Stabilization Using Engineered Sorbents, Leroy Goñez Rodríguez

Masters Theses

As a global environmental pollutant, mercury (Hg), threatens our water resources and presents a substantial risk to human health. The goal of this research project was to evaluate the immobilization of Hg on sorbents to reduce ambient Hg concentrations in water leaching from contaminated East Fork Poplar Creek (EFPC) (Oak Ridge, TN, USA) soils. Using flow-through columns, we determined the potential of different kinds of engineered sorbents (i.e., ThiolSAMMS®, biochar, SediMiteTM, OrganoclayTM PM199) to reduce mercury fluxes from contaminated EFPC soils. The effectiveness of the sorbents in this experiment was determined based on the rate of Hg sorbed and the …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Corrinoid Structure On The Methanogenesis Pathway In Methanosarcina Barkeri Strain Fusaro, Amanda Marie Kennedy Dec 2018

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Corrinoid Structure On The Methanogenesis Pathway In Methanosarcina Barkeri Strain Fusaro, Amanda Marie Kennedy

Masters Theses

Methane is responsible for at least 10% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States alone, and although not the most abundant, it is one of the most dangerously potent greenhouse gases. Methanogens are microbial organisms that require a corrinoid cofactor to synthesize methane.Previous work in bacteria has demonstrated that corrinoid mediated processes, such as methyl transfers, are directly influenced by the structure of the corrinoid cofactor1; 2; 3. Individual organisms show bias or preference for one structure over another, with the sole difference being the lower ligand attached to the corrin ring4. Most organisms have a "preferred" corrinoid structure, …

Low-Overhead Migration Of Read-Only And Read-Mostly Data For Adapting Applications To Hybrid Memory Systems, Joseph Townley Teague

Masters Theses

Memory systems containing different types of memory with varying capacity, latency, and bandwidth are rapidly becoming mainstream. Conventional memory management techniques do not suffice for these systems; they require alternative strategies to appropriately and effectively adapt application memory placement to these heterogeneous memory tiers. Software-based placement and movement strategies are the most desirable due to their flexibility and ease of adoption by end-users. However, there are substantial sources of overhead present when synchronizing low-level data movement with the operating system and running applications. This thesis proposes a novel method of reducing these memory movement overheads on hybrid memory systems. Many data …

The Non-Linear Energy Sink Applied To Vertical Floor Vibration Mitigation, James Ridge Ramsey Dec 2018

The Non-Linear Energy Sink Applied To Vertical Floor Vibration Mitigation, James Ridge Ramsey

Masters Theses

This thesis investigates the non-linear energy sink (NES) and its application to floor vibration mitigation. The NES is a passive type mass damper comprised of an essentially non-linear stiffness component. This non-linear stiffness property allows the NES to interact with a wide variety of frequency regimes that can vary both widely and randomly throughout flooring systems. Flooring systems are regularly subjected to these changing inputs from general use and occupancy, as well as, human and mechanical induced loading. It is known that the NES has been successfully implemented for vibration mitigation in the horizontal direction. However, to achieve this non-linearity …

Approach To Qualification For Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion In Ti-6al-4v, Sean Lucas Yoder Dec 2018

Approach To Qualification For Electron Beam Powder Bed Fusion In Ti-6al-4v, Sean Lucas Yoder

Masters Theses

Recent developments in additive manufacturing (AM) show promise for using AM manufactured components in a production setting. However, a crucial step for mass producing AM components is to certify these parts for use. One common method for certifying parts is to manufacture tensile coupons alongside any parts. These coupons are characterized and the results are related to the parts. This causes many researchers to focus on the process-material interactions while neglecting build setup. Another issue related to certification of AM parts is the lack of knowledge in the software calculations for a given process. Original equipment manufacturers (OEM), such as …
